    GERD before surgery advice

@AlwaysCruising You might want to give it some time. My GERD got much better after a year. I still get a "flare-up" once in a while, but honestly, the only reason I went to a GI doctor was because I wanted to discuss long term options. I was feeling good but was concerned about long-term PPIs and I was not interested in revision. #1-I didn't feel my condition was severe enough to consider that. #2-If I wanted the bypass, I would have gone for it the 1st time around. My GI doctor offered me the LINX procedure or the STRETTA procedure. The LINX is a ring of metal/magnetic beads that they install at the place where your stomach and esophagus meet. The magnets keep it closed so that the acid doesn't keep going up into your esophagus. The STRETTA procedure thickens the lower esophageal sphincter with radiofrequency waves. Same principle as the LINX, it helps close off the sphincter so acid doesn't wash into the esophagus. I was NOT interested in having more hardware installed in my body and I have seen the good things that radiofrequency can do for other conditions, so I chose STRETTA. Unfortunately, my insurance plan doesn't agree and I'm facing paying for it out of pocket. That's what we had planned before COVID hit. I'm not having any problems that would warrant anything urgent, so I wait. Advice for you or anyone with GERD: do your research. There are a lot of lifestyle changes you can make and supplements you can take to help them. God knows I've tried most of them and spent lots of $$ on so-called GERD cures/treatments. So far, what works best for me is sleeping on a wedge and NEVER eating within 3 hours of bedtime. I actually have 2 wedges and if I feel that it's bad, I will sleep on 2 of them (not fun, but it helps) to reach about a 45° angle. I make sure I get plenty of fluids. AND, for the game-changer: DIGESTIVE ENZYMES. I started taking digestive enzymes with my dinner and my reflux got lots better. I read an article that theorizes that a lot of GERD is caused by undigested food in the stomach when you go to bed (hence, no eating within 3 hours of bedtime). I must have slow digestion or something because as soon as I started taking the digestive enzymes, I noticed a big difference. No bloating. No rock-gut. Significantly reduced reflux.

    ❤My Revision Story❤

I don't know if a revision (of any kind) will help or further complicate IBS, (I didn't experience it and have no input, apologies) but you definitely need to see your Surgeon/Team and ask for diagnostic testing. They are the gatekeepers and truthfully only your Surgeon can move the process forward. IMHO: While you are waiting, take a critical look at your diet and log everything. This can help pinpoint what if anything is the inflammatory culprit or caloric overload. That's something you can start immediately to see if you experience any positive change.

    ❤My Revision Story❤

I had a revision to bypass. Lost weight but dialted my stomach which caused me to eat regular meals as with my same stomach. Got my revision today. Feels great and hoping to see great results. Best of luck. But highly recommending you to get a revision. Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    ❤My Revision Story❤

I had the gastric sleeve July 15 2019. I only lost 52 lbs and have gain 20lbs back. I had IBS real bad. After the surgery that issue is gone. The sleeve surgery did not work for me. My appetite has increased. Question wonder if I need a revision for bypass. Just wanting your thoughts.
  5. I org had rny 1999 gained back weight 6 weeks out of revision and weight loss stalled what can I do
  6. How are you doing so far after the revision? Any reflux or heartburn? I just got all of my tests results back and definitely need to have the revision due to severe GERD, hiatal hernia, and really bad esophagitis. I am very nervous because I feel like nothing will ever get rid of my heartburn. I guess I’ve had the hiatal hernia and heartburn for so long that I don’t know what it’s like not to suffer from it.
  7. Aside from possible low revision weight loss the ESG is likely to hold its restriction for the short to medium term only, you'd be better off considering a bypass or other surgical options. https://bmiclinic.com.au/endoscopic-sleeve-gastroplasty-faq/
  8. Considering the endoscopic sleeve revision. Has anyone ever had it done post sleeve?
  9. So, I have been on a Liquid diet for two weeks now really going on three I had a revision Tuesday on the 11th at first I had a problem keeping down things now they are more tolerable I found myself eating chicken noodle soup today because I was so craving it I did consume it and did well with it but if I would’ve just did a liquid I would have vomited back up Has anyone experienced these issues a revision vomiting
  10. I apologize in advance, and I thank those who post to avoid discussing my food choices, since I have exhausted that topic with severe dietary modification over the last five years, though I welcome any feedback on food choices you made and your results.... I am considering a sleeve to MBP revision, and I have questions about gas. Since I was sleeved, I have struggled with gas terribly, explosive when I lay down, but not overly offensive. I am concerned about any increase in this symptom, and I wonder if some members might share their experience. How often does this happen? Is it daily? What length of bypass (cm) did you receive in your surgery? My specific question is whether a decreased length of biliopancreatic limb bypass provides any relief. I only have 40 pounds more to lose, but I have a congenital form of arthritis that encourages me to lose it permanently. With this goal in mind, I am considering requesting a shorter length of bypass. Thank you for the collective wisdom on this.

    GERD before surgery advice

I really struggled with what surgery to get, because I have pretty severe NEED, although it's controlled with Nexium. I was self pay, so I knew there is no chance for me to get a revision. My starting BMI was 69 and my surgeon recommended Loop DS to me. He never seemed too concerned about the GERD. I didn't want to spend so much money and not be able to keep the weight off, and since he said Loop DS has less chance of weight regain, I chose it. I was willing to take the risk of my GERD worsening. I'm a little over 3 weeks post op and I haven't had any issues with GERD so far. I hope I don't have any! 12. I had the sleeve nearly 10 years ago. I gained a lot of weight since then and am blessed with the possibility of a do-over. I had a consultation today to start the process for a revision. An EGD will help the surgeon determine which surgery is best for me--the DS or the RNY, but he suggested I research to get an idea of what I might prefer. Per my reading, the DS is for people with severe morbid obesity (BMI >50), which I do not have. Also, there's supposedly a greater risk of complications from this surgery. However, I read it provides higher weight loss than the RNY. I read about possible ulcers, bowel obstruction, etc and I'm afraid. Is there any way to prevent these issues, or are they just inevitable with any type of bypass surgery? (I know this is a question for my doctor, and I do plan to ask.) Ultimately, like anyone, I just want help to get thin and healthy. I don't want to be sickly or have life-threatening complications as result of weight loss surgery. I want to take full advantage of this 2nd chance, lose all the weight I didn't lose the first time around, and KEEP IT OFF. If my surgeon does not have a firm opinion on which surgery I should get and he leaves the option to me, then I'm not sure whether I would get the DS or the RNY. Do you guys have any information or experience that might help?

    Reached intermediate WL goal!

Hi! Congratulations!!! I had a gastric sleeve about 6 years ago and slowly gained back 50 pounds now weigh 200 lbs. Now I am looking at a revision to A Sadi or MGB. Leaning more towards the Sadi. When they do a revision is the pouch also addressed? Any advice on the Sadi is appreciated. What about the bathroom issues? I’ve read so much but no one really explains the impact on daily life. Thanks🙏🏽

    Sleeve revision (re-sleeving)

Does it really resolve IBS? I wasn't in the market for revision, but this would be worth it! Is there research on how it improves IBS? What is the recovery period? I had vsg in 2012, need to lose 80lbs to get back to goal...which I'm committed to seeing this through, but I'm just off of an IBS flare up, and it's horrible.
  15. I had a sleeve 7 years ago and lost 85 pounds over 6 months. I had no loose skin whatsoever, but I have regained the weight and I'm due to have a revision to a Mini Gastric Bypass in a few weeks. I'm curious to know if you are more likely to have loose skin after a revision for weight gain? I am also now 7 years older 🙂

    Acid reflux and band fills

Yes I had that experience and had such a bad episode it sent me to ER , through CT it was discovered I had bad Esophagitis from the reflux and the band so I am getting a revision tomorrow to bypass ( with sleeve it can make reflux even worse)

    August surgery

August 13th revision lapband to bypass
  18. Woohoo!!! I’m doing a revision from band tomorrow to RNY , and I seriously can’t wait to be able to eat without that god awful stuck feeling or my reflux ! Cheers to everyone 🥳🥳🥳
  19. I don't think you'll be disappointed with your decision. I had the revision from the Band to MGB in Dec of last year and couldn't be happier. I had the band for 12 years and never lost any weight. Now, since having the MGB I've lost 83 lbs in 7 months. I always hated how the band felt when I ate, now I just feel full. It's not painful or aggravating like that band was. Good Luck to you!
  20. I think this has to be a personal decision, but I had a sleeve first then was advised to have a revision to MGB. Since I struggle with the worst reflux of my life. Dr's just referred me for a secondary revision to RNY and said that is what I should have done in the first place. After my sleeve, reflux was marginal, but after MGB its intolerable. I've had 5 EGD's and 2 Bravo tests and a countless number of different meds to get to the point they would refer me for the RNY and I've wasted years feeling horrible (mind you some of the problems I've experienced had more to do with the California health care system). So I know different things work for different people, but that was just my experience.

    GERD before surgery advice

My surgery has a sleeved stomach and while I don't have GERD I have EOS (a.k.a EOE: Eosinophilic Esophagitus) which causes acid issue at night. I used to have to take two acid reducers at night, but after my surgery I only need to take 1. I was surprised by that as I actually thought it'd get worse... So while acid issues do tend to get worse for most people who have VSG (or DS or Loop DS), I think there are also a rare few who it improves upon. At least that's what I've taken from my own experience. In the end it comes down to whether you're willing to take the risk that you may have to end up having to have a revision because it makes your GERD worse.
  22. I had a sleeve done in July 2019 couldn’t keep anything down due to newly developed gerd (never had an issue prior). Lost so much weight in the first 3 months (100+ lbs). Had to have a pic line put in to get my nutrition levels up to where it was safe to operate on me again). Had a revision to gastric bypass in February 2020. Since then I’ve had 3 instances of vomiting but the first was what I assume was leftover acid because that happened still in hospital after revision. The second and 3rd times were my own fault drinking to quickly after eating. I also had a hernia repair at the time of my revision. I originally wanted the bypass but my team talked me into doing the sleeve as my insurance requirements were easier to get approved with the sleeve. I will say I am very thankful I had the revision done and am feeling much happier and healthier now in the 13 months since my original surgery I’ve gone from 350+ to 175 and from 4x pants to a pair of large today. I worried after the horrible outcome from the original surgery that I might be making a mistake having the revision but today am very happy I did.

Revision due to Reflux and scared!!

Not a revision but had bypass and no complications at all 🤪
  24. I had a sleeve to RNY revision for GERD. I did not have reflux before my sleeve, developed it a couple of years later. I was on the maximum dosage of omeprazole (80mg) for a few years and still had breakthrough acid, which gave me an esophageal stricture. I regurgitated everything I swallowed. Still, I didn't want RNY, so I found a surgeon who was willing to explore alternative surgeries with me. However, after a bunch more testing that uncovered some previously unknown issues, I decided on RNY. Had the surgery on 6/29. I had one episode of reflux two days after surgery, I figured it was the last bits of acid in my stomach trying to make me miserable one last time. No acid since. No regurgitation. No vomiting. It has been a massive relief not to wake up in the middle of the night with acid in my mouth or throat. I am really pleased with the RNY so far.
  25. bypass has been around for a long time and there have been so many improvements on it over the years that it's really a safe surgery now - not much riskier than sleeve. I'm not a revision, but I had bypass because I have GERD prior to surgery. I'm very happy with it - no regrets at all (I'm over five years out)
