  1. I’m having my lap-band removed and a bypass done. My surgery is scheduled for April 2nd! Nervous but excited!

    revised DS ?

i know people who've had revisions if they've lost too much. If you don't lose enough some have had their sleeves re-trimmed.

    Conversion's A-Comin'

I was approved for band removal, denied the revision due to BMI not being high enough. Trying to figure out how to appeal it. Not sure where to start but I can't believe that's the answer.

    pain when walking...

Well, the juice to ceviche is a citrus brine mixture and I can see where it could cause diahrrea for sure. Dumping syndrome is worse. A friend who had gastric bypass describe it to me when I asked her, back when I was considering GB surgery for myself. She said that sweets are a likely trigger for dumping and what happened to her was she ate a piece of birthday cake (with all that gooey butter cream frosting) and in a very little while had to rush to the bathroom and literally everything in her digestive tract came out. Undigested food, partially digested food, stuff in her colon, everything. She gave a more graphic description but let me just say "gross". Lower left side of your belly area? Not much there to hurt (appendix, gallbladder, etc are on the right side), so I'll ask, "how long since you were banded?" I'm nearly 3 months out and I still have periodic tenderness around my port area. Could that be the pain? Could it be ovulation pain? A lot of women are never aware of when they ovulate and then one month, they feel it. The source of the pain is something you do need to discuss with your doctor. Good luck!

    7 months now

I have exactly the same issues. I am 5 months out and have played with the same 4-5 pounds for over a month now. I upped my intake of liquid protein and that seems to help some, but still haven't gotten down beyond those same 4-5 pounds. I'll lose a couple, then gain them back, then lose them, then gain them. Some days I can eat anything and other days everything is a chore and I throw up. It's a roller coaster, but I am not discouraged! I'm still learning to respect the band and let it be the tool it's supposed to be. It will never be easy for me, but will be worthwhile. One other thing I might add. My support group consists of all gastric sleeve or bypass patients. I am the only bander. While their weight loss is fast and furious, I refuse to let that deter me. Even the nurse who leads the group does not advocate the band. I talked with my doc about it, and his feeling is that slow and steady will win the race. 2-3 years out, my weight loss will be comparable to others who have had other procedures. We have to look at the goal and walk toward it, never giving up!
  6. Hi everyone my name is Nancy just wanted to give an update I had gastric bypass on 6/24/15 of this year and as of today down 105 lbs. Best decision ever. Still have more to go but I'm enjoying the journey...below are some pics before and now......

    Work after Surgery

If you were doing a gastric band then yes but bypass is a bit more involved. I would check with your doctor but I know my surgeon restricts driving until the first follow up is completed.
  8. I started on this journey about 7 years ago. Then what stopped me was the cost of the procedure, the fact that it would have been banding or bypass. And lack of encouragement from a then husband. Fast forward 7 year. Ex husband. My very supportive family, changing jobs and having great insurance. Me wanting to have a life that I don't complain of knee pain and a lot of other ailments. I'm only 42 but feel 82. So I have done the informational meeting, did the first intake meeting with the dietician and the nurse. Next is shrink, dietician and meet with the doc. Starting to question the what ifs.... will I only be able to eat Protein the rest of my life? Can I take I bite of my dad's birth cake with out getting sick? I only have 2 weeks of sick time built up. Will it be enough time off from work? I want to be healthy. Just very scared of the journey to get there. I'm in central Minnesota and If there are any locals I would love to have a mentor and coach to call on for encouragement

Dr. Thomas Bass - No Problems

I was recently revised to a sleeve so just go with an open mind in what surgery you want! I had to get rid of the band!

    My F'n Band Slipped.

If your stomach is in good enough shape at the time of removal (if your insurance will pay for removal and your surgeon is willing), you might be able to do it all in one surgery and have the band removed and change to another procedure with only paying your surgeon for the revision to the other procedure. The insurance company pays for the OR and band removal part, you pay for the sleeve or RNY. I've heard of it being done in the past. Might be worth asking the question, if you are interested in another procedure. My PCP also told me that depending on the way they write it up you can sometimes get switched to a new procedure even if the insurance company says one per customer. They are taking the band out due to complications, not due to you not following the rules. There is a difference. Medical need, all that. But we know how much insurance companies love to say no.
  11. What surgery ate you having? I found the sleeve to just be the simplest compared to bypass. For my sleeve, they made 5 small horizontal incisions, only one was even close to an inch. The only thing bad, is done pain you get with the largest incision, which should last a week. No pain from my stomach. Sent from my XT1609 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Thoughts on revision?

Interestingly enough some people never seem to lose that feeling of hunger. Nobody will ever know if these patients never lost physical hunger at least temporarily in the first place or if they're confusing "head hunger" with "physical hunger". There is no test that can differentiate between the two. Acid reflux is the devil. Bile reflux is the devil's big fat mother. I got two revisions because of these issues, both times associated with hiatoplastic because of hiatus hernia. My second revision was on 26th February and this time eating is more "problematic" so to say. The MGB seems to be more "forgiving" than the long limb RNY in some way. Or maybe I just don't remember several issue I had in the first months after MGB, not sure. In general dense foods tend to give me stomach ache and sometimes sit in the stomach like a brick and I hate this feeling so I understand not wanting to eat heavy/dense foods. It's always hard to tell via internet. Regarding the vomiting after dense food it might be that you're eating too fast or too much or don't chew well enough or a combination of this. However, this is something only you can tell. Maybe you could try a denser food, chew the heck out of it, stop after a few bites or set a timer to e. g. 20 min and take your time. Regarding the reflux you could play around with different foods. I'm sensitive to e. g. dairy, dry red wine and in general very fatty foods, with nuts and nut based foods being an exception. The combination of high protein and fat is the worst regarding my stomach issues. It also can help having a time span of about 2 h between last meal and going to bed. However, if your reflux is that bad you might consider revision to RNY anyway regardless of weight.

    NBC: Dateline Obese Special Report

Teresa, your idea of writing to them was a great one. Here's the letter I just sent: I was very disheartened to watch Al Roker's piece on bypass surgery last Friday. There was no discussion whatsoever of other types of bariatric surgery--irresponsibly so in light of the fact that more and more people, including teenagers, are taking this very serious step. Someone watching your show could easily conclude that there is only one type of surgical procedure available to people suffering from severe obesity. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is profoundly safer than bypass and equally effective in improving the health of people suffering from weight-related problems. Weight loss is moderated and, as with RNY/bypass, requires that the patient make substantial changes in his or her life. Perhaps you avoided discussions of banding because as yet, only one manufacturer distributes the band in the U.S. But at the very least it would have been appropriate and helpful to say that there ARE other surgical options available, and that people doing research should be sure to inquire about them. The goal of any weight-loss surgery is to improve the life and health of the patient, and there is no question that banding can help that happen with exponentially fewer risks to the patient. Dr. Christine Ren is one of the most respected band doctors in the country. Since it's inconceivable that she did not bring this procedure to the attention of Mr. Roker or your producers, the obvious conclusion is that it was excluded for some reason. I am very concerned--as you should be too--that some members of your audience will make an unnecessarily risky decision because of your editorial choice.

Looking for Lap Band to Sleeve Buddy

I also had my band removed, and had to wait 3 months. I was told is due to the scar tissue and it needed to heal before they do the sleeve, also insurance and you need to do some test over. I was sleeved on 8/10 and have lost 18 so far, I'm glad I did the revision, the band started giving me so much trouble and it begin to hurt. There is a 1500 calorie diet you can follow to help you maintain and not gain any weight, it was very hard for me and I found myself eating more, and more, I pray you can get it done soon, blessings to you all.
  15. I had an appointment to try to get approval for a sleeve to bypass revision, but I canceled it. This thread, and some other stuff I heard about gastric bypass, was freaking me out.
  16. Losingit2018 - How hard has your recovery been since the sleeve to bypass revision? How long were you out of commission before returning to your daily routine? For me, it isn't about how much I lose at this point, it is about not becoming diabetic again, and being taken away from my nephew as everyone else in my family has. At this point, I am the sole survivor at 45.

Sad but true - friends that are jealous!

It is a sad but real thing that happens as we lose weight. Friends tend to become very jealous and try to sabotage our efforts. I was banded on 1/30/08 and sad to say but I have lost my best friend over it. I never thought I would have lost her over this, but I did have to say good-bye to the friendship. My health and well being are more important to me than an angry bitter friend. She had gastric bypass in 2004 and lost 145 lbs. She didn't take care of herself and has since regained all the weight. She ate fast food daily and never made the commitment to overcome food. So when I decided to get the lap-band she made fun of me and basically said I would fail. Well since I have done extremely well she became really nasty to me. So I have prepared myself to get rid of any nasty negative people in my life who cannot be supportive. I need to be healthy for myself and my family. Good luck to all of you:biggrin2:

Sad but true - friends that are jealous!

Wow Ladies... I am feeling so blessed right now. I have a very good friend at work who has done the bypass, and her husband is recently bypassed. She has just gotten back on the stick, so to speak, and lost another 15 pounds (her total loss is something over 100). Her hubby has lost nearly 65 by now and is doing very well. She's been so supportive of my decision to have WLS, and we talked endlessly about both options. I decided on the band, and she's been 100% supportive. I do have another "friend" (in quotes because she is sometimey) who I KNOW will not be happy about the surgery. She struggles with her weight as well, but since she's 6' 3" tall, it doesn't show as much on her! I just know that when I'm doing well, she's not as happy for me as I think she should be. She's happiest when she's doing 'better' in our internal competition. I don't understand it at all - why would you NOT be happy for a friend that was getting healthier, especially when you KNOW they've been struggling? I hope I don't have to deal with that...since I don't have a LOT of close friends, I would hate to lose any of them...not everyone earns the title of Friend with me - most people are 'friendly acquaintances' and I leave them where they are. My 17 year old has a favorite song, part of the lyrics are "You see me...Hi Hater!" Jill Scott also has an awesome song titled "Hate on me Hater" that fits the situation perfectly. Hang in there ladies!

    Gastric Bypass VRS. Lap Band

hi i just wanted to give some info my mother had the GB done about 5 years ago and she is still thin she had a very hard time and she has to take b12 shots every month along with other vits. as we all should be with GB you have to because your body is not asorbing all the nut. she has said she wish she would have had the band because it is ajustable but it takes alot more will power and drive as we all know. my mother lost lots of weight fast and got to me grossly thin now she looks great. my doctor told me at my first consult that GB can mess with hormones and was true for my mom. so i guess the thing you have to do is look at the whole picture everyone is different my uncle is extermely over weight and myself having teh lapband and my mom having the bypass i know he needs the bypass he is way to large and has no idea of healthy eating or self control, he would not be able to do the liquid dites after a fill not and expecially before and after the surgery and he would not be able to own the fact that if you eat bad stuff you will not lose weight it would always be someone elses fault not his. i dont mean to sound mean but i am being honest so i hope he dont let his fear of the GB stop him becaues he is going to die if he dont do something.

    The three week stall

I was sleeved 22/12/16, lost 19 pounds and been stalled for about a week. Getting discouraged because I am following my plan and getting my Protein and Water. Hope it kicks back in soon. Starting to wonder if I should have done bypass instead. HW 280 SW 257 CW 239 sleeve surgery 12/12/16

    Denied with UHC?

I was denied twice through UHC. I hired Lindstrom Obesity Advocacy in May. FINALLY AFTER MANY MONTHS MY REVISION SURGERY HAS BEEN APPROVED!!!!! THANK YOU WALTER & KELLEY LINDSTROM, Lindstrom Obesity Advocacy, FOR NOT GIVING UP AND FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN! I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. 2016 is going to be a year of wonderful changes in my life!

    Almost there!

Not sure if it is different for DS but I had RNY bypass and no drains, staples (only glue) and no binder. Protein was tough first few weeks but gets much easier after that.

    slippage

Ok this is the story, I am three years out and I have lost 80lbs.I have had one fill six weeks after surgery and a complete unfill two months ago. My current weight is 155. I have a slipped band and I will require surgery soon. I am a self pay and I have not even paid off my last surgery yet. My husband will probably divorce me because we can’t afford another surgery. My band was completely fool proof until three months ago. I loved it, after four or five ounces of food I felt like I had eaten a thanksgiving dinner. Occasionally, I would overeat, eat to fast or be too hungry, the result was vomiting. People call it purbing, “productive burping.” Perbing is the dirty little secret of having a Lap-band. Perbing is vomiting and ultimately it can cause a prolapsed stomach. After a bout of what I thought was stomach flu, I vomited more than usual. The symptoms were the onset of reflux, stomach pain and more vomiting. The night time reflux became so bad that I aspirated and contracted pneumonia. I have been on anti-biotics, Nexium and Carafate. I now have ulcers and my barium upper GI showed that I am damaging my esophageal sphincter. I had an endoscope under fluoroscope and the bottom line is I have to have surgery and have my band fixed, revised or removed. I have an appointment with my original surgeon on Friday. I am not sure how this will all turn out but I want others to be aware that you can slip your band years later, after no problems and a good weight loss. I you eat until you vomit, you are eating too fast or too much. I have pretty good insurance, but they will not cover the Lap-band. If I have any more complications with my second surgery I will be bankrupt. I never considered these possibilities when I had my initial surgery. Would I have the LAP-BAND surgery knowing what I know now? Yes, absolutely I would have the surgery again. I love the result, losing this much weight has changed my life. I will figure it out, I will figure out how to pay for it, my husband will not divorce me. I will keep you all posted…….Jennifer
