It varies Marsha. I paid $17000 for my sleeve in Northern CA (an expensive part of the country). In Mexico, it typically costs around $10,000. There are surgeons in the US who do it cheaper, but I wasn't interested in them for various reasons. However, that's for a virgin sleeve. A revision is going to cost more.

Hi all, I was originally told by my surgeon's office that the insurance "approved" the band-to-bypass revision, but unfortunately there were some miscommunications on their end and the insurance company actually denied (they are saying that it's not sufficient enough to approve this surgery because the band is still technically in place and hasn't "failed" even though medically it has failed in terms of WL success and more than occasional vomiting). Talk about a roller-coaster - - excitement and hope followed by sadness and dispare... but I want this badly (and NEED it), so I'm about to draft an appeal letter. Do any of you have advice on what I should state in the appeal letter? Any other suggestions? Thanks, ~Micheal

I will be having sleeve to bypass on April 10 due to excessive acid reflux. Of course, I am going for the trifecta because I had a band to begin with and have already been revised once. Insurance has already approved me, but info on this is so hard to find regarding changes and weight loss expectations

@CurvyCakes you will be a day after me on this revision. I am glad that your doctor gave you some idea of what to expect weight loss wise and that eases my mind a bit. I have at MAX 20lbs to lose before I start looking sickly. Keep in touch on how you are feeling with your journey!

Hi there! I'm being revised from sleeve to RNY 4/11 due to severe GERD. From what my surgeon explained revision to RNY lose about 50% of their excess weight on average. That number could be more or less based on the individual. We are expected to lose at a slower rate than with our original surgery. There are some revision folks that loss quicker than their initial surgery but again we are all different. Pre-op and post-op diets also vary surgeon to surgeon. I have to do a 1 week liquid diet prior to my revision yet another person I follow on a different site only have to do liquids for 2 days prior to surgery. Wishing everyone much success on their upcoming WLS journey be it your initial surgery or a revision.

I have read many posts on here about slowly losing weight after revision, if we work harder at gym and stay on track for diet, is it possible to lose more weight faster? I’m scheduled for June 9th revision surgery, and hope to lose weight as well as fixing GERD and hiatal hernia. I also have gained some weight back since I was sleeved. Thanks In advance for your thoughts and opinions.

Boy----lot's of prayers tonight for my Jersey Girls!!! Michaele---will be praying hard for good news for you, I know you are scared, and you can come here and unload anytime. I know when you get news like that, all sorts of emotions rear their heads! When I got my bad news, I was scared, and yet mad as hell, at EVERYONE!!! And no one had given me cancer, but I was still mad, I wanted to scream and cry, and I also wanted to hide and pretend I had never been told, so I would not have to deal with it. Last Fall I had a scare with my thyroid, I thought it too was cancerous, and I used these wonderful women to moan and cry to, and complain about my fears-----they did not let me down! They won't you either! Hang in there, many, MANY times those tests are just shadows and nothing is wrong, and that is what we are hoping for for you!!! Sherry----follow those rules girlie! Did they not mention any sort of surgery to reset the band so to say, it just has to come out? That sounds so bizarre!!! Have you thought about any sort of revision surgery? I have heard that the sleeve is having issues with reflux as well, because I thought that would be ideal if anything ever happened, but now I am guessing not!! Betty, hope you are hanging (nope no more hanging for you!!!) make that---hope you are feeling good!!! Hugs to all of you. I am exhausted, I hauled wood with my Dad today, and cleaned my house----all on about 4 hours sleep, so I am off to bed. ((((((HUGS))))))) Kat

Hi all; I had my band out last wednesday. Before the band removal, my doc said that in 1-2 months after the band removal that we could do the sleeve revision. I went back in for a post-op check up today, and now he is talking 2 months! He didnt give any emperical evidence about why we need to wait 2 months, he just said that this was just a post-op visit, and that we needed to start the bariatric surgery back from the beginning about getting me qualified, etc. I brought out the big guns and told him my company was talking about layoffs(what else is new, right?, but they really ar), the time frame is may-june, and that since I know I have coverage with my current insurance, I wanted to make sure it was done before that happened. He didnt appear particularly moved with my argument. I am BUMMED. I was hoping to come away with a date today since we both went in knowing I was getting the revision and not just the band removed. Sigh.... Another trip back to him on Monday with the packet for the bariatric work up. I was hoping to finish the summer with most of my weight gone, not sure where it stands now. blech Lisa

Gastric bypass revision. Am I the only one?
Idramafree35 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi! I'm new, this is my first post. I had gastric bypass surgery in 2005. I lost about 100 lbs and have since gained it back plus a couple extra. Last year I made the decision to have a revision surgery. I have been having the hardest time finding people who have had revision to their gastric bypass surgery. I have questions and can't find answers. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction? -

Gastric bypass revision. Am I the only one?

It'd be helpful if you outlined what type of revision are you having, along with what tests were run that concluded that you needed a revision? And how has your diet been? Did you main a Protein forward diet, not drink with meals, etc? -
I had my surgery with Dr. Ortiz on April 16th 2012 and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have EVER made!!! I am down 142 lbs and I feel amazing!! I am actually on his before and after section of his website and I have a featured youtube clip. I am an advocate as Dr. Ortiz has changed my life. He and his staff took such great care of me! I have posted several times about my experience so if you search under my posts you should find more info. One of his coordinators, Lori Wrights had her band to sleeve revision the same day as me.. We call each other "sleeve sisters"!!! LOL I also use his Enspira vitamins.. I have never taken the recommended dosage (4 per day) but I try and get at least one down a day. I also take an additional B12 not because I have too... I just believe in B12 so much for overall wellness. Haven't been sick a day since my surgery. I have pictures posted of the facility and of my surgery day if you are interested in looking.... As always... I am here for support as well... So, if any of you have any questions or concerns please let me know.. I am glad to help! Best of Luck!!! Emily

Looking for suggestions - Need to decide to resleeve or bypass

If you have GERD, RNY gastric bypass is the preferred revision. It usually cures GERD. -
Looking for suggestions - Need to decide to resleeve or bypass
Tufflaw posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my original sleeve done in 2016, went from 290 pre-surgery to 195, felt fantastic, no problems at all, they even invited me to have my picture taken for the doctor's advertising! Then I had some personal and professional problems and managed to gain EVERYTHING back. I met with my doctor and he recommended revision, which I am scheduled for some time in November, currently getting my clearances. He said after my endoscopy we'd discuss whether to re-sleeve or convert to bypass. He said if my sleeve was still intact it would have to be a bypass, but if it was dilated I could choose. I had my endoscopy last week and the sleeve is indeed dilated so now I have to make a decision. Another factor is I've had GERD for over 10 years and take esomeprazole daily which helps a lot but I've heard it's not great to take that forever either. I've also heard that bypass usually cures GERD, so that's another consideration. I'd love to hear thoughts from anyone who has either been re-sleeved or converted to bypass so I can have a better understanding of both options before I meet with my doctor again, Thanks! -
Another newbie with many, many questions!

Welcome! I too had a band and was miserable with it. After 3 years and 1 day, I revised to a sleeve and got the band out. Although I followed all the rules, the band never worked for me and the acid reflux was horrible. With a sleeve, it works right away. You have no appointments to fill it and then unfill it, etc. There is no foreign device inside you squeezing your upper stomach and the weight loss is proven to be faster and in a higher percentage than with the band. Some MDs say 6 months and some use a year as a guideline for getting pregnant so ask your OB/GYN. As for recovery, the sleeve was a much easier recovery than the band was. I went back to work as an RN and did two 13 hours shifts one week post-op. -
As in he would gain their weight back and got a gastric bypass revision?

Gastric bypass revision -
So, anyways, as much as I hate to admit it, I was just dying over waiting on my insurance, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, who I have through my husband's workplace. Well, all that is over now. Hurrah! I could hardly sleep over the fact that I spent 6 months going to Mayo out here, had a physcologist, worked out like crazy, etc. and it all would have been for not except for Blue Cross. Oh, I love them. And it wasn't that hard once I jumped through all the hoops at Mayo ( the craziness is, is that I did this for the bypass, and last month my surgeon said, "get the lap band" much less trama for your young body." ) And all these people said Blue Cross would never cover it, but they did! I guess they revised once in 2004, and then back again shorty after. Mayo wrote my letter, (and probably included the book's worth of info on me they collected in 6 months). After the secretary for my surgeon said they sent it to pre-authorization, I called them 2 days later and the gal there said,"I was very lucky to have Blue Cross/Shield, they are very good for approval and fast", they had it mailed, and exactly 12 days later ( including 4th of July) I and Mayo got the approval by mail. So anyways, for anyone out there like me, who was literally freakin' out, it was easy and painless with the insurance, the approval said "deemed medically necessary" . And also, Mayo in MN just started doing lap bands. Dr. Flo Que, she's great, and gets you in fast! Anyways, I didn't want to post this to gloat, just to let other worry-warts like me get some positive stuff, because I always loved the positive posts for insurance. Surgery 8-8-06

After I had my port revision I had pretty good restriction but I could take a bite or two and it would sort of hurt but then if I waited a few minutes I could go ahead with my meal and to me was eating too much so I decided to go and get another fill. Well when I did this he moved me up to 1.6 and the rest of that day and most of the next day I couldnt hardly even swallow liquid or even saliva was uncomfortable and I was burping up acid so by the next afternoon I decided to go and get some taken out. The medical assistant went in and tried to get it and she couldnt get it out so she called the nurse in and she tried and by then she could only get like less than one cc to come back out and now I have no restriction at all. My question is has anyone experienced this? I am scared that somehow the first girl somehow punctured the tubing or something and all my saline leaked out. I am scared now because I just recently had the port revision and I dont want to have to go back in now and have something else fixed. Can anyone advise? I cant get another appt with the dr until December 20th when he is back in town.

Both of my port revisions were paid for by insurance....they were "medically necessary"

Does excercise help with excess skin?
JamieLogical replied to Angie413's topic in Fitness & Exercise
One of the key factors those people are missing is time. As I said in a previous post, it can take time for the skin to catch up to the weight loss. That's not to say that all of their skin would have shrunk had they given it more time, but it may have improved somewhat. I don't want to sound like a hypocrite here though. Full disclosure: I lost 90 pounds back in 2010/2011 "on my own" and had an extended tummy tuck and breast lift afterward. And that was after having maintained my weight for almost a year. So clearly my skin didn't tighten back up to the point where I was happy with it. I do wish that I knew back then what I know now about steps I could have taken to reduce the loose skin issue WHILE losing weight. Once I am sleeved on September 1, I intend to be religious about hydration, moisturization, supplementation, and resistance training. Hopefully by doing that, I can reduce the likelihood of needing to have any revision to my tummy tuck or any additional skin removal surgery down the road. -
I have done TONS of research and been on these forums for months and I have't heard anything at all about VSG causing a build-up of scar tissue. I've heard a LOT of lap-band patients having trouble with scar tissue from their bands when revising to VSG. I don't think you'll have to be a "gym rat" to maintain your weight loss, but regular exercise is a requirement for maintained weight loss no matter how you lose the weight. I lost 90 pounds "on my own" a few years ago and stopping regular exercise contributed greatly to my regain. As for stretching the sleeve, it will relax and expand some by about a year out, but it can never be back to anything remotely resembling your old, full-sized stomach.

As I have posted last week, I do indeed have band slippage (by the way with no apparent symptoms except vomiting/spitting up nightly) and was able to eat normal, solid foods so I must say you can have slippage and still be able to eat and drink and food go down fine. Scary that there are no symptoms I know.... I am supposed to hear from my insurance today on approval for revision and surgery for fixing of the slipped band. Please pray they do cover. If so I am to be scheduled for surgery either tomorrow morning or Feb 14th. I will keep you posted. I have faith in God that he will help me on this... Thanks for your prayers and concerns....

Kansas city area sleevers?
mom2wils replied to laceygorrell's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey group! Just came across this thread - great to see you all doing so well! I am currently banded but in the process of going through all the hoops to get it revised to a sleeve. Thought it was going to be done this month but due to insurance stuff looks like it won't be until February or March. Minimally Invasive Surgical Hospital did my band in 2008 and will do my revision. So looking forward to getting on with the sleeve! And looking forward to hearing more about your journeys!!
