  1. Hello all, New member here! I decided I needed to make a lifestyle change and investigate all my options to improve my health/lose weight. As a Veteran I use the VA for my care (have BCBS insurance as well) and scheduled a PCP appointment before my initial consultation for surgery. While I got some really good advice and support in checking out my options for weight loss (including surgery), they were not too supportive of gastric surgery as an option although encouraged me to explore it. They also had focused on the negative and complications that could be associated with it and some general misinformation (i.e. have to lose 50 lbs before you are able to get the surgery and at that rate, you might as well keep going to lose more weight). The initial consultation with the surgeons office couldn't have been more polar opposite. Obviously supportive of surgery as an option, dismissed the prevalence of the complications that the PCP brought up (almost all the surgeries end up in perforations and leaks, a lot of people who get the surgery gain the weight back, etc). They answered every question I could think of and scheduled me for more appointments in the next month. I made sure to tell both the PCP and surgeon that i'm not rushing into something that is such a life changing decision. The surgeon mentioned with my age "low" BMI and metabolism it *should* be very effective. My body composition (for context): 33 years old, 260 lbs, 5'6, have sleep apnea and acid reflux that may be more related to weight and diet than GERD on its own. Other than sharing my experience, questions I have for everyone here is - If you have had a similar experience with your PCPs when discussing bariatric surgery? - Given my body composition, does bariatric surgery seem drastic? How many people between 35-40 BMI have had the surgery and do you think it was a good move? Thanks in advance for your input!

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I'm first day post op and I've been walking around fine. Even went outside to glimpse the racehorses over the road with hubby (in my nightgown, hehe!) I expect if you built up slowly you'd be fine--a walk to the letterbox turns into 15mins, 20mins, etc. (At least, that was my physio's advice this morning). Just so long as you don't have to carry any of the second graders and you're free of complications you'll be awesome =) Sent from my CPH1719 using BariatricPal mobile app

    February 2019 weight loss buds

My insurance company approved the surgery, and only one night in the hospital--although I hope they would approve more if there are complications and I need to stay longer.

    DS V RNY HELLLLPPPP

I think that's the safest option and will give me the malabsorption to help I'd much rather go with an operation that is more common in Australia less complications etc

    Do pregnancy symptoms change?

I'd definitely do a pregnancy test just to be sure - a dollar at Dollar Tree for peace of mind. Also maybe do an ovulation test, as it could be that? I'd make that a priority, as being pregnant with the Nexplanon implant still in your arm could cause complications. How long have you had the Nexplanon in? If it's longer than 3 years it might be time to change it out. But there are hormones from your body, hormones due to the surgery, hormones from your birth control... my uneducated guess would be hormones, LOL.

    Smooth Sailing for Anyone?

I had low BMI too, and just squeaked by the qualification through insurance with 36 and co-morbidities (cut off was 35 with co-morbidities, 40 with none). I'm also right at 5ft0. We'll lose slower than people with a higher BMI - we just have to realise that. Pain, bloating, gas, constipation, nausea - they're not really complications, just side effects of the surgery, and in the long term are pretty minor. I had a breast reduction too about 5 years ago. Best thing I had ever done until I did this, LOL. Went from a 44H to a 38B. I hope to get to a 36B by losing some back fat. I'm hoping my boobs won;t change too much with the surgery because all the fat was already removed (6 lbs), leaving just breast tissue.

    1st weigh in visit

I’m in Australia so things are a bit different here and I went to see my surgeon about the same weight as you but an inch taller 🤭 my surgeon refused to operate while I was a smoker. I wanted the op so badly I ditched my best friend of 33 years and was operated on day 72 smoke free. Please give up now. Just do it. It’s so much safer during surgery, less complications post op and healing also much better which you want so you can get off purées faster 😂

    February 2019 Sleevers?

I had my Surgery 1/21/19. I had anxiety like everyone else. It went smooth. My throat hurt a little after but it went away in a week. 3 weeks and 1 day out I am 28 LBS down. I feel great. My biggest fear was nausea and vomiting. Nothing. No complications at all. I have progressed to soft diet Eggs, thin deli meat etc without an issue. Just stick to the program. Take your time eating. And exercise!! Treadmill, Stationary bike. It will help. Good luck. You will do great!!
  11. So, stepping on the scale I was excited to think that I may have loss at least 10lbs. But as the story of my previous weight loss efforts, great try and effort but still short. It’s been 2 weeks - no complications, getting all my protein and liquids. .... So, 8 lbs sucks, but it’s better than gaining weight. So, I recommit to 64 oz of water (not counting protein shakes); hitting my protein mark, kicking the walking into high gear. Can’t wait to see what my three month visit has in store for me !!

    Smooth Sailing for Anyone?

I was sleeved 12/20 and have had no complications. The pain is common I wouldn't call it a complication. You just had the majority of your stomach removed you should expect to feel pain. Other then that and some queasiness day 1 I've been fine. I'm back to work with a weight restriction, my incisions healed nicely and I haven't had any problems with my gallbladder (since I still have mine) next month I go for blood work just to check my levels but the doctors don't have any concerns.

    Loosing too much weight

I’m 2 years out and haven’t had the complications u have had but I do what you do, i stabilised at 18 months at 8 half stone but then have started to fluctuate between that , I drop to 8 stone then slowly gain, then it happens again I can drop 7kg in 2 weeks then it goes back on, like you I eat whatever I want, even bad things just trying to maintain is the hardest part I drink gold top milk , each nutrient rich foods, meet my water goals and protein goals It’s like my body can’t decide if it wants to be 8 stone or 8 and. A half Lowest weight was 7 stone 8 pounds I agree those charts are rubbish My dietician has always been happy with my weight loss I’m just gonna have to get used to being called skinny

    It was NOT gas pain.

Wishing you a fast recovery. I went thru almost the same as you. After a couple of days of having the pain I drove my self to ER (pain and all) the Dr. in ER saw me that bad that she took me in right away and started pain killers, ultrasound, X-ray, and Ct scan. And found the PVT in the CT scan. I was hospitalized for 2 days and put on blood thinners it has helped. But now I have a menstrual cycle that is heavy and going on 4 weeks. Seeing my doctor this week and hematologists. Sleeve doctor says abnormal cycles are regular after surgery but the medicine they gave me also says to be cautious of abnormal cycles. And like you presurgery no health problems. My husband is hating this surgery. I’m just hopeful that I won’t have any other complications. So I won’t regret it. Weight loss wise I’ve lost about 22 lbs. I got surgery 1/7/19. And I think I’m ready for exercise but with this heavy menstrual idk. Best of luck to you.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I had my nutrition appt. today to discuss the first 2 weeks post op. One thing I didn't' know was they said to eat and drink sitting straight up vs reclining in the bed as it goes down easier. My surgery is next Monday. I am starting to freak out a little. I will have to go by myself since my husband has to get kids on the bus and I wont see him until I am out of recovery and back in my room. I am still having the what ifs in my head. Not just surgery issues but future complications etc. I think I will feel better a week form now when I have more control over my situation.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Hey all! So, I'll definitely reply to other stuff soon but I've got myself into a bit of a situation... I got 2 days 'till surgery and my back is freaking killing me. It started, I think, when I was lying funny in bed... and it's gotten worse over the past day or two. I'm nervous because I've experienced back pain before (sciatic nerve pain is a... well, you get the idea) but this is entirely different. It's more to the side, middle of my back (so, like, shooting pains whenever I roll over and tenderness right under where my stomach is) and of course my catastrophising lil brain is like "probably not musculature--you got pancreitis, or whatever that thing's called when your pancreas craps out). I mean, I've been on optifast for, like, a month, and the last week or so I've been really bad with the veges... either I won't eat them, or I'll eat them raw with soy sauce (no oil--which is supposed to help the pancreas). I really don't wanna go into surgery with a bad back, because It's gonna really complicate the feelings in that area... I'm not going to know what's back pain, what's stomach pain, what I should worry about, what I shouldn't... Gah!!! Anyway. So I have a physio appointment in about 4 hours. Hopefully they magically fit me and I've done all this worrying for nothing. Sent from my CPH1719 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Smooth Sailing for Anyone?

I had my sleeve on 12/31/18 and other than occasional constipation (because I don’t take in enough water when I’m working) I haven’t had any complications. It’s been 6 weeks today and I’ve lost 26 pounds. Not the most but very respectable. I was 231 on surgery date and I’m an even 5’0 short. I believe my future is good!
  19. Just curious, I have seen some periodic posts about people going from sleeve to full bypass. Anyone one know the main reasons? Complications? No weight loss with the sleeve? I'm converting from the lap band to sleeve. I'm hoping this is it for me, no more surgeries.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

As many surgeries that I have had. This is the one that freaked me out the most. The last surgery I had was a tad bit lower than this one and and the one before that was a tad bit lower than the previous one. Surgery is scary either way it goes. I had a complication but not related to the surgery. It was related to an allergic reaction that I had the night before surgery. Everything will be fine and you will know it is fine right after you wake up from the Anesthesia. .

    gerd/vomiting and bypass

I also have severe cyclical vomiting syndrome post sleeve surgery. My biggest complication is that I'm a chronic pain patient and I'm constantly going in and out of withdrawal symptoms because I cant keep my meds down. I cant find any information about this anywhere I'm in starting to get very freaked out.

nutritionist FINALLY agreed to see me.

I only see my nutritionist cuz she facilitates our support meetings each month. It's not one-on-one stuff. I got all my nutrition classes pre-op + the book bible. The other stuff I learned here. You're at 4 weeks. You had the typical 3 week stall most likely. Also you had complications and probably medications that have thrown you behind the curve a little. You've lost almost half your weight. Congrats! Seems like you are doing pretty good! Why not list some of what you are eating and your daily calories/macros? We can probably give you a pretty good idea. Also, list what stage you're eating at now per your doc.

    Starting the process

Congratulations on your decision to start this journey. Have you checked with your health insurance carrier to determine which bariatric benefits are available? Many require 6 months of medically supervised weight loss prior to surgery. Also, have you decided which surgery you're going to have? I have the sleeve 8 weeks ago and it's FANTASTIC! I had no pain, no problems, no complications and am slowly but surely losing weight and feeling better already. The sooner you can start eating like a post-op person like you'll be eating after the surgery for the rest of your life, the better. You can practice it now. Good luck!

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Hi, EmzBee. I don't think it is inevitable, but complications are my greatest fear about this surgery (and why I waited three years to do it). If something went wrong, i would always think that I did this to myself voluntarily. I'm 59, and there is probably a greater chance of complications for me than for younger people. Still, knowing all that, I'm going through with it for the chance of a better life on the other side!
  25. My surgeon's office has two nutritionists. Except mine has been out on maternity leave since my surgery so I have not seen a nutritionist at all since then. They decided that the priority was on pre-op patients. The program was I would see one 1 month, 3 month, 6 month, and 12 months out to make sure I know WTF I am doing, but they cancelled ALL post-op patient appointments so this one girl can get through all the pre-ops. Well I haven't lost weight in 4 weeks now and after plenty of badgering I FINALLY scored an appointment for next Wednesday. JEEBUS. I get the point that they want to get new patients through, but it is equally as important to ensure your post-ops aren't effing up! She's responded to my messages, but has never been able to actually look at what I am eating over any length of time or see any food logs or really go into depth (since it's all via messaging). I am friggin' thankful I finally get to see a dietitian. I mean I've been following the book as best I've been able to given complications, etc, but I really, really need that one-on-one guidance and support. I'm basically just winging it, it feels like. I am really disappointed in my office for not bringing someone else on temporarily or giving referrals or SOMETHING. I'm going to bring all this up next week. Not trying to keep taking advice from internet randos - would really like to see an RD! I know my other post says I lost 5lbs in January, but that is all back. What the heck.
