    Help! VSG or Bypass

Not sure if this helps but I had VSG in Feb 2020 and never had any problems with GERD prior to surgery. Since my surgery I have terrible GERD and am now getting ready to have a revision to a bypass. Also, I only lost 40 lbs after my VSG. Wish I had just had the bypass to start with!
  2. Often people have to change some meds they’re on because your bypass may affect the absorption of the medication. Often these are slow release meds. BUT they don’t take you completely off the tablets. (Except may blood pressure meds.) I agree with the others in that being taken of your meds cold turkey is contributing a lot to what you are experiencing. It can be dangerous to cut anti depressant meds. And yes, definitely contact your prescribing doctor. You don’t have to rely solely on shakes. (I found them awful too.) Try bone broths, wonton soup or pho broths (just strain out the wontons, vegetables, noodles, etc.) soups, yoghurt smoothies (thin yoghurt with milk). Many UK surgeons recommend drinking milk you enrich by adding milk powder. At three weeks we’ve often moved to purées. But of course all plans are different. I gave up shakes I suffered through at the beginning of week three. When do you start purées? Please take care of yourself.
  3. I have been denied coverage from BCBS insurance company for requesting lapband to bypass revision. Because they can find nothing wrong with my band, they won’t do the surgery. Even though the band is okay, I’m not. It has caused esophageal dilation and dysmotility. I lost weight with the band but I was vomiting a lot at night. Id wake up from a dead sleep vomiting out of my nose and mouth at least three nights a week. Very scary due to possibly getting that into my lungs. Has anyone else filed an appeal that was accepted by insurance?

    Really this many pills!?

That's pretty similar to what I take. I had gastric bypass, but my program has the same guidelines for bypass and sleeve. I use an app called Medisafe for tracking and reminders, but at almost 2 years post-op, I have a pretty good routine and don't really need reminders. The app is really good for keeping track of how many of each I have left, though. A few tips to make it easier: If you're not taking a bariatric multivitamin, you might be able to switch to one that will just be one pill per day instead of two (I use BariatriPal Multivitamin One with an annual subscription because it's the best price I've found for bariatric multivitamins). D3 comes in various dosages, so try finding one that has the same amount in one pill. I take a chewable one that's strawberry flavored, so it's almost like candy. Try calcium chews (I LOVE BariatricPal Belgian chocolate caramel and French vanilla caramel -- they are so delicious that I actually look forward to taking them).
  5. I am 3 weeks after surgery. Been fat always. Had the sleeve in 2016 and did well for a few years. The plan was to convert then to the bypass once my BMI was down but then the insurance company decided not to pay and it was a battle til now. I had it 3 weeks ago. And this is so much worse than I could have ever imagined. I realise now that they put me on anti nausea meds and took me off my antidepressants that I’d been on for about 8 years. Cold turkey. I am now a bitch who yells and snaps or cries. That’s it. I had a lot of pain post surgery and was in hospital 6 days not 3 - as with probably lots of us, I’m tolerant to pain meds so I am only now managing with plain paracetamol. But I feel nauseous all the time. OK.. so it’s piteous.. but I really think that I’d be ok if I could stomach any protein powder at all. I just can’t. It’s all completely disgusting. I’m in Europe not the US but I ordered over €200 of different products. All made me vomit. No taste ones, flavoured ones, ones in soups etc. all the same! I sit here with no energy and frankly no will to live. I have a bucketload of pills that I could take but I have kids so I just can’t do that. Somehow this has to turn around. But how? Has anyone been through this? I wanted to move to the country and grow delicious wonderful food and have a few hens, not bankrupt us on buying disgusting “shakes” and being bloody miserable. I don’t weigh. I don’t have scales. I just know that my body is eating itself and I’m not giving it enough protein because I just vomit it back, even the mini-sips. And how miserable is it to be only about to drink 50ml in an hour and have to fill it with sips of stuff that makes you want to vomit… then you do vomit!! Google anything about protein shakes that are any good and of course, they all come up. Can someone actually tell me if they have been in this situation and if they have found any protein that works? What a baby I am but I am at the end of my rope. I appreciate any ideas, especially from people in Europe. My “bariatric team” are useless. Just useless.

    Really this many pills!?

that's standard for bypass for sure. My clinic has the sleevers on the exact same vitamin regimen as the bypassers (so, this one, in other words), but some clinics don't have the sleevers taking quite as many. In the future as you get labs done, they may change some of this based on whatever your blood levels are.
  7. It's been a little over 7 months from my surgery (revision from sleeve to bypass) and this morning I stepped on the scale and saw I made it down to 1derland! This comes after a bit of a stall for a week or so, so I just wanted to share and encourage those who are either considering the surgery or are struggling to get through a stall that this does work and if you keep up with your tracking and weighing food and watching what you're putting in your body, it will work for you too!

WHAT does religion have to do with me having surgery??????

I was going to say the exact same thing as the others. Do they think having (heart) triple bypass surgery is a sin? Or removing some sort of cancer growth? Or how about tooth extraction? Sheesh. Find some new friends, I say!

    July 2022 surgery buddies

Lapband removal, Gastric bypass, and hernia repair scheduled for July 6th. I’m 4 days into my preop diet, which is 2 weeks of a shake for breakfast and lunch and a healthy choice steamer for dinner. I’ve been enhancing the healthy choice meal with extra steamed broccoli, which is helping. I think I’m beyond the worst hunger pains now.

    Unhappy

I am one month post op and I am unhappy with my decision to have bypass surgery. My family and friends continue to tell me I’ll feel happy later on when I loose all the weight and doctors keep telling me eventually I’ll feel normal again. But I feel like there is no end in sight. Im not happy, constantly in pain, hungry but i can’t eat, thirsty but i can’t drink. I was excited before the surgery and wish I was happy now. Did anyone else feel this way? I feel alone when I talk to the few people I know that have had this surgery because they’re all very happy with their weight loss.

It's similar to a gastric bypass but less invasive and reversible. Sleeve wasn't an option for me because of my acid reflux

    August Surgery Buddies!

I’ve had quite a journey already and I haven’t had surgery yet! I was suppose to have surgery in November. Then covid shut surgeries down at my hospital. I didn’t get another date until June 8th. That was rescheduled for June 22nd. So, the night before my surgery on June 21st the hospital called me at 10:16 at night to say that my surgery was canceled due to my surgeon getting covid! So, my new date is August 10th. Phew! My very first doctor appointment was June 3rd of LAST year! Haha! I’m having gastric bypass with hiatal hernia repair.
  15. As catwoman said, They only reverse a bypass for severe medical issues. When you say you want the stomach acid and nutrition back, can you explain this a little more. Do you have some type of absorption issue now that you are hoping to correct? I would think that converting to a DS may be an option for you to lose the weight regain but if you already have absorption issues with sleeve they could get even worse (I would talk to a surgeon about that).
  16. yes - you can reverse an RNY. However, they usually only do it for serious medical issues that can't be resolved any other way. I'm not sure why you'd want to go from RNY to sleeve, though, since RNY is a stronger surgery. Unless you don't really want to lose more weight (you said you've put on 60 lbs) and are more concerned about getting stomach acid back (not sure why you'd want this - plus GERD is a potential risk of sleeve). I've heard of people having RNY revised to DS, when they reverse the RNY, create a sleeve, and then do the intestinal bypass part of the DS - but very few surgeons are qualified to do this. I would probably consider some of those surgeons, though, since they'd have the most experience (even if you just want the sleeve part).
  17. Well... Technically gastric bypass is reversible. The sleeve is not. So technically they could put things back the way it was and do a sleeve tho you would have a much smaller pouch. But here is a article regarding that. You may have issues finding a surgeon to do it so i would at least start calling bariatric surgery centers and asking. https://www.bariatric-surgery-source.com/gastric-sleeve-after-failed-gastric-bypass.html

    Weight gain & Health Issues

As @catwoman7 said some of those changes you mentioned are just temporary. Like hair loss usually persists for about 3 months & your hormones settle once you’ve lost most of your weight (oestrogen is stored in fat so as you lose all the excess oestrogen is released into blood stream). Large weight regain can occur because of complacency & people slipping back into old eating habits. It can occur because how they were eating wasn’t sustainable &/or was too restrictive. It didn’t allow them to live their life as they wanted & hindered them doing what they enjoyed. Or they didn’t do the head work to understand & learn to manage their old eating behaviours & what drove them to eat. All things the surgery doesn’t do anything about. But it does give you the time to explore these factors. Also remember the average weight loss at about the three year mark is 60% of the weight that had to be lost. This can include the bounce back ‘resettling’ weight gain, complacency & adjusting to a more flexible eating plan. Or it could just be the weight your body is happier at. Sure there is always a chance to develop an issue that has to be monitored but it’s rare. Comparatively, there are very few complications from weight loss surgery. Some of the issues may not have anything to do with the surgery. I have a protein malabsorption issue. Not from my 3 yr old sleeve but from my gall being removed last year. (Malabsorption issues are very rare with sleeve.) I have low BP. I had a genetic predisposition before surgery now it’s all the time because of my lower weight not the surgery. Gerd is probably the highest risk after sleeve - about 15-20% I believe. But it can be managed or treated by a revision to bypass. Some issues may be revealed because you likely are being monitored medically more closely now then before or your weight & associated comorbidities may have been masking what were pre existing conditions. You’ll likely read & hear about people with problems because they they post to seek help & support. They don’t often post about what the cause was or the remedy. In comparison, people tend not to post or talk about their successes. I know many people who’ve had the surgery. No one has experienced long term or developed new issues because of the surgery. A couple regained most of their weight because they went back to their old eating habits. Certainly the benefits far outweigh any temporary side effects or the very rare problem.

If you want to share and had your surgery feb 2022, show me some before and afters! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    No fluid issues?

Congrats on your bypass! No worries - thin liquids will pass easily through your pouch. I was able to drink pretty large swallows a day or 2 after surgery. Once you transition to soft foods, you WILL feel the restriction!
  22. Hi everyone! I am 8 days post op gastric bypass. I think I’m doing pretty well. However, I had a few friends tell me that drinking fluids would be difficult. They said I’d probably only be able to take small sips for the rest of my life. But, I can get fluids down really easily. I don’t gulp or chug, but I can take pretty large sips and I have no discomfort or pain… does this mean something is wrong with my pouch?

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi Rachel and Jen!! My mini gastric bypass was 4/14. I have lost less than you both. I have not been able to get anywhere near my protein and water intake, I have a HUGE aversion to protein since week 6. I did my surgery in Mexico so I don't have any local support at this point but my surgeon advises he thinks I'm very dehydrated causing my inability to handle eating. I went and got a Myers IV bag last week and i feel like it has helped a bit, My starting weight was 242 and hit onederland Monday!!! I only weigh once a week and was at 199.8 this past Monday. You both are doing so amazing!!! I have fibromyalgia and this has helped with my brain fog and exhaustion for sure. I am not working out yet at direction from my surgeon until my fluids and protein are under control. I still get very light headed and dizzy everyday.
  24. Ugggg, I forgot how much the preop diet sucks. I'm being revised from a lapband to gastric bypass on July 6. My band has been unfilled since December, so I've been able to eat normally since then. My current surgeon has me doing two weeks of shake for breakfast, shake for lunch, healthy choice steamer for dinner. Last time I did all liquids, staying under 20 grams of carbs, but it was only for a week. From what I remember, the first days of the preop diet are the worst and then I kinda got numb and it wasn't so bad. But I'm in the thick of it now. And staring down two full week of this is daunting. I made it last time, I'll make it this time, but just uggg.
  25. At Renew Bariatrics they do bypass and gastric and some ball one...🤔 and the band. Most ppl get gastric (they even have mini gastric) or sleeve. Renew is right across the boarder too. Literally a 7 min drive once through the boarder. I was anti Mexico but omg these guys are AMAZING! Can't express that enough. Best decision ever. Anyway. Gotta go weigh myself 🥳🙏
