Hormonal or medical setbacks?
NothingUpMySleeve posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today is my one-month surgiversary and I've lost only 5 lb. I did a 10 day pre-op diet and did not lose weight, but my liver looked great, so that was enough for me. I lost 5 lb the first week or so, then 2 the following week. I gained the 2 lb back shortly after, and have lost nothing since then. I eat 600-700 calories a day, and try to stay high Protein, low carb and minimal processed food. I don't even have the desire to cheat and have only felt intense hunger once. I walk my dog on a two mile route each day, and just started adding the elliptical in for 30 minutes. My clothes are slightly looser, in the mild way you'd expect after losing 5 lb. I believe I must have some hormonal condition or something impeding my progress. Did anyone experience this? If so, what medications or dietary changes made the difference for you? I can't see a dr until March, but I want to go armed with some knowledge. Some background info: I'm not diabetic and don't have PCOS. Not menopausal. Thyroid levels were normal as of 18 months ago, not sure now. -
My first day of the liquid diet we have a work function at a Mexican food place. And I drove 2 others or I would have just gone home & skipped the dinner. It smells so good! But I am sitting here being good & drinking my water. 1 more protein shake to go when I get home. :-/

over eating 3 wks out
Nel replied to brandnewme2013's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay, here is where someone has to say "measure your food" and then also say, there is a difference in soft food and dense food. I can eat 2.5-3 oz of dense food. For example: roast beef or chicken with cheese. That's it. If I eat more, I'm sure I'd throw up. I can eat an entire 5 oz container of yogurt though. With no feelings of discomfort. I've eaten more than that in yogurt. I had a 6 oz container one day. Why? It's soft and like liquid, it moves quickly through my pouch with no worries. So, the "soft" food...like Soup or liquefied stuff or potatoes...it's not dense food so you can eat more without discomfort. I felt "really full" from a few bites when I first started eating. So I'm not sure you're actually overeating. It's not like you just ate 4 oz of dense Protein and I don't worry about finishing off a container of yogurt. If it's a solid food, I measure and don't eat over the amount. -
@wnusrt1 hey bud the answer to your question is yes!!! the most common reason for conversion is terrible/unbearable heartburn😣 you didn't mention if you have that problem? not pointing fingers, but have you totally been eating correctly? Portions esp. the sleeve only works with you, if you work with it. (saying this, and below with TLC) if you are getting the GB, thinking you might loose weight and keep it off/problem solved? not necessarily true you will loose the weight initially- but If you don't change your eating habits, you might gain again. eeeek Try and give the sleeve another chance - you might not have that much restriction now, but if you follow the rules of protein, water etc. you can't help but loose weight.☺️ do a liquid diet/protein shakes for awhile, this will give you a jump start in loosing more weight gradually go to soft - etc. i emphasize watch your portion sizes. i know my portion sizes were through the roof before sleeve (7+ years ago) lets meet for drinks, info - conversation, i'm buying, water of course😁 good luck☺️ kathy

Thank you for all of your encouragement. I am thrilled about my weight loss. The weight seems to just be melting away. I am loosing about 2-4lbs. a day. I have even begun exercising which I haven't physically been able to do for a long time. I am tempted at times to get off track but my mom is supporting me 100% and she won't let me. She's like a drill Sargent. My dad is a little concerned that I may be losing too much weight but I am following the diet my nutritionist gave me which is 4 Protein shakes per day, Water and broth. I am also a little worried but as I see the numbers on the scale drop I feel so good. This morning my scale read 298.:biggrin2:

Hi White! I wasn't banded on Oct 12, but I was banded on Oct 26 so we're pretty close. I'm sorry to hear about your frustrations with being hungry...can you get another fill earlier? I also have a 4 cc band and I am filled to 2.1 cc and I still haven't found the perfect restriction yet. Sometimes it takes a few fills to hit your sweet spot. As far as menus...try to eat your Protein first, veggies second and then carbs if you have room. Of course I'm not perfect with eating either...it takes a lot of work and there have been a couple of weeks where I have gained. I live alone so I usually don't cook big meals, but I eat a lot of chilli, tuna, egg salad, hamburger, and shredded chicken for protein. I also eat a lot of salad with chicken, hard boiled eggs, bacon. There is also a food thread with lots of suggestions. I find I have to make an effort to prepare my food a little bit more, but that way I make better choices. There is also a thread for people who were banded in October and it's great to be able to talk to others who are going through similar issues. Here's the link http://www.lapbandtalk.com/october-bandsters-t23737p95.html I hope this helps!! Good luck.

What do I wear POST OP(Wks 1-6)
BLERDgirl replied to theatrejo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wore baggy sweats for the first two weeks and after that I wore regular clothes. What ever you get just don't get a lot since they will quickly become too big. If you have a good thrift or second hand store nearby that may be a good option. -
Stomach Size 1 Year Out..
Georgia replied to Dizzle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm with M2G. I'm 22 mos out and today I had a half In N Out Burger (my 1st!!!) with one bun removed and a very few fries for lunch. I can eat much more (and did for a few weeks) of slider food- cookies, crackers, candy etc. which is where you REALLY have to practice self control but to this day can still only eat a very small amt of dense protein (chicken, beef, etc). So you must eat good food first. The restriction is still there and with your guidelines WORKS! But it IS only a tool and once you get to goal and maintain you still have choices that must be up to you. I've gone back to watching carbs closely and don't intend to regain! -
Can you do this all organic?
itstimealready replied to itstimealready's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The organic protein powders/shakes I've seen were so high in carbs though I guess I'll have to wait for maintenance. -

I'm allergic to it. It's in the ragweed family and triggers severe hives. Here's another resource for Protein powders. Bob's Red Mill -
I use one 8 oz glass of skim with a protein shake every day. When you say 3 X a day do you mean glasses? with even low fat milk that could be over 300 calories. I don't eat cereal because it doesn't stick with me. I do have oatmeal mixed with a fat free yogurt most mornings.

Getting Banded April 16th, Any Tips or Advice?
jenhrvy20 replied to WishUponABand's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Steph! Don't be nervous at all. You will not remember a thing. It goes very smoothly and you will do great! The pain is bearable. Not fun, but a lil pain meds will do you just fine. I was actually just banded on 4/7/09. I have already lost 19 lbs. YAY! I take in about 800-1000 calories a day, but that is different for everyone I'm sure. I was directed to take in about 60g of protein a day. Take a good multivitamin and maybe a calcium supplement as well. Your doctor may have already told you this. I like the protein shakes called EAS: Advantage Chocolate Fudge. They taste good and they have 17g of protein with only 110 calories. I am so excited for you!!! I am still learning how to use my band. It is definately a learning process. Good luck and I wish you all the best  -
2weeks sleeved and still no energy. Is this normal?
Mama Spike replied to nana2mo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 3 weeks out and exhausted. Just followed up with my surgeon. He said I will be tired for a month and just make sure to get in all my protein, which I am. Hang in there! -
Almost 6 weeks post op. I am so tired from about noonish until 5pm. It's not that mid day tiredness. But sheer exhaustion. I did return to work this past week and I guess I can contribute it to that?? But I'm getting plenty of sleep and all my supplements, protein and water. At what point do I think it's anemia or something else?

I was never lactose intolerant until protein shakes, but now have problems if I don't take lactaide before drinking.. It seems to work like a charm so I guess i am lactose intolerant. I also use lactade milk or soy milk. Good luck

I'm almost 6.5 months out and I'm still not eating what I'm "supposed" to be eating, in terms of the amounts. I'm supposed to be able to eat half a cup of food, perhaps 1/4 cup if it's meat or something dense. I'm at maybe half that. At my 6 month checkup a couple weeks ago, my surgeon did not seem concerned, mainly because I don't have any pain or vomiting, which would be an indication of serious problems. She just said to continue measuring and tracking everything, and if it takes me three small meals to finish a half cup of food, then do it. I also supplement with a shake a day, sometimes two if my stomach is being particularly bitchy. If you're not feeling any pain or vomiting and you're getting in your Water and Protein, I wouldn't worry about it. It takes a lot of time to heal and adjust. How is your water and protein intake, btw? Are you able to get in what you need, or at least close to it?

6 Wks Post Op...i Eat Btw 800 To 1100 Cal A Day....is This Ok?
sylviau replied to f1stborn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i eat about the same range of calories as you. i went to my nutricionist last friday and she said thats fine and that when i get a fill (my first fill is this friday), i might be eating around 800-900, which is fine. as long as you're getting the nutrients. i try to stay within 20-30 fat grams a day, 30-50 g carbs and at least 70 g protein (i usually have 90-100). -
This question has been known to incite riots on some boards! There are vastly different opinions among both bandsters and doctors regarding protein drinks. Some say that they are merely liquid calories with no purpose in our diets. Others swear that they keep them feeling full for hours and are a godsend for those who cannot eat when they first wake up! Personally, I do not use them because I have been able to consume protein in solid form since about 4 wks post-op. I say discuss this question with your doctor and explain to him why YOU feel you can benefit from them. Everyone is so different and you must do what works for you. Good luck!

I would go with what your nut or dr say. I bought at Target pure protein vanilla and the frosty chocolate and they are both quite tasty. And for 20.00 a pop 140 cal, 2.5g of fat, 2g sugar and 25p you cannot beat that. Sometimes these places just want you to fork out 50 bucks for a protein and they do not even know what RNY patients need. By the way thank u Dlcoggin for the recomendation!

There are a number of very good products on the market that contain protein blends. I have no idea why anyone would be against whey protein but that said, whey, soy and milk proteins are all excellent and all have the highest possible 1.0 PDCAAS digestability score. Casein protein is also very high quality but not recommended for bypass patients because it's a "slow release" protein - exactly the opposite of what you want following gastric bypass. Stay away from collagen (aka "gelatin") protein. PDCAAS score is 0.08 which makes it pretty much worthless. You'll often find collagen protein in the products marketed as "shots" or "bullets". Very high protein numbers but it's useless if you can't digest it. If you can get the product name that the guy is recommending and post it here, it should be easy to get the nutrition information and the type of protein it contains. Some suggest that there is a limit to the amount of protein that your body can absorb from one "meal" - usually stating 30g to 40g but I have yet to find a reputable source to confirm that. Virtually all doctors recommend high protein intake for bypass patients so I wouldn't worry too much about your body not being able to utilize it.

Preop Diet Starts Mon
droppingitlikeitshot75 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Received my protein diet kit today from my surgeon's office. Have to eat or drink 4 of these shakes, soups or bars a day for 14 days. Also can have one meal consisting of 4oz of lean meat and unlimited amount of green nonstarchy veggies, unlimited amount of sf jello or sf koolaid, crystal light etc. This is coming faster than I thought. -
I actually found my Pure Protein shakes at same club so I'm going to start having them for breakfast and lunch...this weekend is just weird and boring and all I can do is sit around hating myself... Because really I have. Nothing else to do.LOL

I hate putting powdered protein in the blender because it gets so FROTHY!!! I HATE IT!!! I typically use premixed shakes in my blender when I am adding fruit or other things, but they are so expensive. Any suggestions?
