Hi ArizonaGirl, Being a self-pay, you may be a bandster by the end of next week. A relative of mine went that fast, but she had a gastric bypass. Anyway, I'll bet there are as many different stories about how people fared as there are people who have had the band put on. It seems to be so individual, as you will read on this site. Personally, I have been very fortunate. I was banded July 3. I took pain medication for about 2 days, mostly because they stressed at the hospital to take it when the pain was mild so that it wouldn't get out of control. Most of the pain came from the gas going to my shoulders and back, but walking helped, along with the medication. After a couple of days, I was pretty comfortable, if a little less than energetic. It's not nice to sneeze or cough, but it won't kill you. I went through the two-week liquid only diet and was really bored with it by the time I "graduated" but again, it wasn't that bad. I'm on soft foods now, and that really is easy. I'm beginning to get at least half of my Protein (70 grams required) from food like baked salmon and cottage cheese, and the rest I still get from a shake made with powdered protein. I got my protein in a 6-lb bag at costco. ($39.95 for the bag of 72 servings = $.55 per serving, which is a lot cheaper than most protein drinks) Mixed in a blender with some Splenda and ice cubes, it's not bad. I'm not feeling any restriction when I eat, so I probably eat larger bites that I should; and probably eat faster. I will regret it after my first fill and I get some restriction. I'm trying to change my eating habits, but it takes Concentration! Even though I don't seem to have any restriction, I am not terribly hungry. Head hunger gets to me sometimes, but I try to ignore it. It was three weeks Thursday since I got the band and I felt ready to go back to exercising (aqua exercises) last Monday. The doctor had said o.k. at my 2 week check, so that's my exercise. Hope this gives you an idea of what to expect, but remember, everyone is different. I wish you the luck that I've had.

Out Patient or overnight stay?
Losing 2 replied to WDW Luver's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Before I made my choice, I called at 10-12 lapband offices / centers and each had different options from a couple of hours stay at a surgical center, to an overnight stay in the hospital. I had an overnight stay at a hospital - glad to have had the overnight option; however, I could see how I could easily have gone home in a few hours and rested very well for several days. Best of Luck! -
Day Prior to surgery...
frenchvanilla replied to MyMeshelle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was only allowed to eat breakfast the day before surgery the rest of the day was clear liquid , you better check with your surgeon first ,as far as hunger well thats somethin you might wanna start gettin used to, i have been on clear liquids and protein shakes since my surgery on June 26th, the hunger part does get better..good luck & congrats! -
I'm on the 15th... Thinking-I'm on day 4 of my liquid diet and just realized I was supposed to be drinking Low Sugar stuff too.. Not that i was adding sugars, just drinking juice with my Protein drinks... .OOPPSS I've already messed up... Maybe not too bad... I'll get it right starting tomorrow. I hope that it doesn't matter that much. I have been eating 750-100 cal, low fat, not too high carb. DOING- working my hiney off getting everything at work and with the kids lined up for next week when I'm out of town. Also packing my bags, getting all my stuff that I need together for when I get back home, Reading, reading, reading... about what to eat when I get home, what to do when I get home, etc... And I'm exhausted from all the running around. feeling- nervous- Nervous that I wont lose weight after going thru all of this more than anything. I don't lose weight well at all. I can follow a healthy diet and exercise and only lose minimal weight. I just don't want this to be another failure. I know everyone has told me that I WILL lose, but I still worry about it. A little sad that my relationship with my "friend food" is changing.. forever. BUT Excited- about what the future brings-- I am focusing on the WHY I am doing this... For my kids, for my health. AND, excited that I am going to be able to cross my legs again, that my knees will feel better, that I will be able to buy clothes in a regular store, that I will feel better, that I will be healthier... HOW BOUT YOU???

Okay, I have a question. My surgery is the 8th of December and I'm on my pre-diet. I'm doing great but I have a question about eating on T-giving. My diet now consists of : Per day 3 Protein shakes 1 lean cuisine with <300 calories,<45 carbs, >14 Protein 5 ounces of lean protein 2 cups of salad 2 tbsp. dressing 1/2 cup green veggies Okay, my question is do you think instead of the lean cuisine, I could just substitute turkey and a salad? I would think it would be okay but I don't want to do anything that could jeopardize my surgery and my Nutritionist is off today. Help please.

Any one else surgery schedule for end on month?
Joycey replied to Crissy A's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My procedure is set for Sept 3 but I start the shakes on the 13th as well. I don't plan to go crazy this weekend though. I think I will try to ingest the most protein and vegetables I can though to get some nutrients in before I can't. -

@Isubabe33 losing 69lbs in 9 months is great! How much more do you have to lose? Weight loss can take up to 18-24 months. Are you getting enough protein? How many calories?

Wow, that's very true!! Thanks for the comments. I don't think I'm eating enough.. Which doesn't help getting all the Protein that I need. I will admit I'm ADDICTED to sunflower seeds and sweet tea. When I get hungry or want a snack I eat sunflower seeds instead of chips etc.

female only Alternative Healing/Meditation/Positive Thinking
natalie_christin posted a topic in The Gals' Room
I don't know if anyone is interested in any of this, but I thought I would throw it out there. One of the things that I am planning on working on or I am trying to work on I should say is meditating and trying to raise my energy level up. I don't know if it will help or make a difference, But, there is a lots of information showing that an individual state of mind and mindset really affects their ability to rebound from surgeries. I believe in the possibilities of alternative healing. So, my goal is to try to meditate every day if it all possible and to really try to work on my attitude and things that nature. I am unfortunately one of those individuals that always has the side effects from his surgery or I'm always in that 1% of individuals that experience something that is not the norm. I found out earlier this year that I have severe rheumatoid arthritis and it helps to explain why my immune system is not always that great… So, it may be not helpful or it may not do anything but, I figured taking this road as an option doesn't hurt. I have gone through so much medically and Honestly I am scared to death of having another surgery just because of everything I've gone through. I'm willing to do it because I see a light at the end of the tunnel but I'm just hoping that the light is extremely bright and not filled with a bunch of problems. So like I said, I don't know if anyone is interested or is of the mindset that changing our energy or where we are throughout this process, makes a difference, but I thought that I would least throw it out there and see if anyone is interested in discussing it. -

I am 2.5 weeks post-op and feeling better compared to the last 2 weeks. I'm starting to feel guilty that I'm not doing more around the house my kitchen is a disaster my husband works long hours and then he comes home and takes care of my daughter and I. Am I not getting in enough protein? Or is my body still recovering from major surgery?

Protein shakes
aquitenonnymouse replied to glitta114's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used Now brand (they make vitamins, cooking oil, and whey protein) protein powder because I liked it before surgery, but after surgery, I didn't like it anymore. I then tried Unjury, which my hospital recommended, but I hadn't tried because of cost. It is SO worth the cost. I thought Now was okay, because it wasn't repulsive. After trying Unjury- WOAH I didn't realize that protein powder could taste GOOD. For me, it's worth it- tasty, mixes smoothly, etc. It's a little more than $1 per serving, but it gets a bit cheaper if you subscribe. -
I was using premium protein liquid until the last month. Now I am using powder Cytosport from Costco. The only way I can use the powered shakes is with my immersion blender. I have texture issues and my immersion blender takes care of this. I also add things to the shakes... cold decaf coffee or banana to the chocolate and frozen berries to the vanilla. I drink a shake with 54 grams of protein every morning.

HELP! Surgery is 3/13...
RestlessMonkey replied to JennyLee9881's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok. With the caveat that they are both good options... I have the lap band and I am glad I do. It comes in sizes and so my doc was able to fit me during surgery with the one that was the least traumatic to my stomach. I have the AP Large. I like the fact that I have 14 ccs to "play" with. I like the construction. The port is larger than the one with the realize band (I think) but as my surgeon said, in obese people, finding the port is a challenge (at the start, before we lose) and he said when I lost he'd cheerfully put in a low profile port for me...no big deal. I also don't like the thought of the port being clamped to my abdominal wall, and that's how the realize band's port is placed (I think). Lastly my surgeon uses the lap band because it's been in the USA the longest and it's the one he's familiar with. Having said all that, people who have the realize band also lose weight and thrive. I think it's like MP3 players...many different brands with small differences but they all play music! -
Pre-Op All Liquid Too Much Protein?
laurenlee posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on day #5 of my pre-op liquid protein diet. I am keeping a log of what I am drinking, grams of protein, fat, carbs and sugars. Yesterday, I had 198 grams of protein! i think what did it was the physician's weight loss center nuritional supplements that i sip throughout the day that total 36 grams of protein in 24oz. imagine if crystal light had 12 grams of protein in every 8oz. what happens when we consume too much protein? -
Anyone travel for a living?
wsw27 replied to ReadyInCT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi. First of all -good luck to you. I do not travel as much as you do, but I did have two back to back business trips about 10 days post-op. I tried to have as much soup as possible (technically, I was supposed to be on mushies during my first trip). I was not a fish eater pre-op, but I am now! I tried to order fish whenever possible. For sides, mashed or baked potato (no skin). I did just fine. I also found a small portable battery operated drink mixer. I packed it in my suitcase along with Opti-fast powder and Unjury single serve packets. I transfer the shakes to a throw away water bottle and sipped during the day. If anyone asked, I just said it was a protein shake. Very few questions. Hope this helps. -
Questions for nutritionist...
bxlisa replied to laurenwhite82's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Here are some questions: How much follow-up care do I get from you (nutritionist)? What foods should I avoid? Which are the best healthy Protein options? How many calories does one need daily? how many grams of Fiber do we need daily? What type of blood work I need? Does drinking fruit juice count as a serving of fruit? How much alcoholic consumed is the limit? What do you think are the keys to long-term success for the lap-band? -

If you need protein, try this 1 scoop of whey protein 28 gr , 1 cup milk, frozen fruit. Put all in a blender, I would drink that even if i didn't need too. -
