I'm in beginning stage of band over bypass surgery and was wondering how long after can I fly
  2. I am new to joining but have been keeping tabs everyday on here for the last 3 months, so I went to my Dr. and explained to her taht I was interested in getting the lap band surgery. I have a friend who just got the lap band about 4 months ago and he loves it. So I told her the Dr. I was interested in using, she told me since I have HMO I will have to see one of the Dr.'s in Straubs network first then can be referred out since the dr. I am interested in is in a different network. So I go and see a nutritionist and it comes to be that this whole appt. is about seeing a surgeon for the gastric bypass surgery what i specifically said I did not want. So I had to pary the $85 for her and a $15 co pay to see the s,urgeon who does'nt even perform the surgery nor does any dr in my network...Im so frustrated, then I recieved a letter from Straub saying that the reason for the denial os because "SERVICES AVAILABLE THROUGH THE STRAUB HEALTH CENTER NETWORK" but in the letter it also says Service: Pending Authorization. So I am so lost..Please help:help:
  3. Dr. Jaime Ponce de Leon, in Tijuana, Mexico! His Patient Coordinator is Trish. She and he are the super team :-). Dr. Ponce is renowned in Mexico, and taught a lot of the other doctors mentioned. Trish was the main factor to build the trust. You won't regret this choice. Dr. Ponce is $5500. ($500 more for very high BMI or Lapland revision.) I'm Day 4 Post OP, feel great! I posted more detail at www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/57620-looking-to-do-the-sleeve-in-Mexico/page__gopid__550636#entry550636 Trish's info: www.WLS4betterLife.com
  4. I had gastric band in December 12 years ago, and a revision surgery one year later. I just had my bypass last week just in time for holidays. Will I miss turkey this year? Probably.but I will be with my family for the first time in a year. Also ironically I’ve always had a sweet tooth, but since my surgery, I can barely tolerate sweet tasting anything. Even if it is sugar free. You’ll do well. my way of expressing myself was to do a sketchbook for the Brooklyn art library sketchbook project. That’s been a great outlet for me. best of luck and positive thoughts to you! 🥰

    Still No Fill

Operation date was April 24,2012 in sac , it's almost been 4mos sense I've gotten this . I started at 300lbs. Now am 262 lbs, which I have been foe 3 weeks now, I'm still waiting to get a fill. They said they could get me a app, for sept the 7th and that doesn't mean I'll get a fill then , they will just talk to me about it, they (Ucdavis) doesn't belive in giving fills unless that really have too, that's what they told me . And I'm really believing that they will not ever going to get a fill,, keep getting the run around, bin really wondering now why I had this thing put on me, I m hungry all the time and can eat like I always have, I'm so dis appointed , I wish to god that I gotten the gastric bypass, I'm not a happy camper at all, I'm on disability so I receive Medicare, I'm thinking that I'm going to try and find a diff doctor and praying that he will give me fills , or will take it out and give me the gastric bypass, but not to sure how Medicare feels about that? I feel like the year of jumping thur hoops and all the test to have this operation was a waste of time, I want so very much for this to work, I read all your guys good reports and wieght loss, which is wonderful, but I'm really starting to feel like giving up all hope, I just don't understand . Countingtcalories and doing it all like a good girl and I'm starving and still not losing wieght, I have 1000 cal. A day like the doc said , I have my protien drink, I walk 2 hours a day, what did I do to my self? I'm going to look for another doc and talk to him about every thing and take it from there, I'll touch back in with everyone to update on what's happening with me, and congrad. To all the wonderful ones that are trying and the one that r losing wieght , that's fantastic! I don't know how ur doing it , but congrats . I'll try to make my next post more if a possitive one, sorry I just needed to talk to someone , thanks

    Questions

So, is it info on the surgeon or info on the procedure? I have never heard of this doc, but I would try googling him. Go to healthgrades.com and look him up. Do searches for his name in this forum but also at obesity help and the gastricsleeve forum (google them for the link). Is he one of the Mexican surgeons or is he in the USA? There is a whole forum dedicated to surgery in Mexico - poke around there to see what you can find out. this is just me, but I would surely pick Dr Aceves if I went to Mexico - that guy has done alot of sleeves, alot of revisions and seems to have a great reputation. Not to say there aren't others that are good too! Good luck!

    Questions

My coordinator has scheduled my dtr's revision from band to sleeve with a Dr Juan Arellano. We are having issues trying to find/get info on this surgeon. We would feel much better if we had info that would allow us to make a more informed decision. We would greatly appreciate anything any of you could tell us. This is too serious not to go into the surgery informed. Thank you so much. A concerned/nervous mom & dtr.
  8. I just came across an article that said that restrictions after bypass was walking only for 30 days. Then maybe add swimming but no weight lifting/strength training for 4 months and no high impact for a year. That seemed conservative so I wanted to see what others were told. I have not had the final meeting with my surgeon so I don't have his specific recommendations.
  9. Hi all! I was banded back in 2003, and it took me 2 years to reach my goal weight. Then came the great lap band slippage of 2005. I went for the corrective procedure and was told all was well, since then I have had nothing but trouble - I've regained 60lbs and can't seem to loose any of it. It's as though EVERYTHING I eat causes me to gain weight - even though my diet consists mostly of veggie Soup (cause its about all I can keep down) and I wake every night choking on reflux, not to mention the constant pain at the port site. So today i went back to my surgeon and as suspected, the band has slipped again. I've discussed my options with Dr.D and have decided the best plan for me is to remove the band and have the revision to a sleeve. Dr.D tells me that I have to remove the band, wait 3 months for my stomach to relax then have the sleeve done. I've tried to argue with him re; the 3 month rest period but considering he is the surgeon, and I have no idea about surgical matters, I didn't get very far in my attempts to get him to do the removal and sleeve in one surgery. Has anyone had the same experience - Band out, few months wait then sleeved? I'm so worried about the weight gain in those 3 months - can anyone share their story? Did you gain weight? How rapidly? Or how did you maintain your weight loss over that time? I'm not going to lie, this is terrifying me - so I thought I'd reach out to fellow banders for support!

So... what does Dumping Syndrome actually FEEL like?

Nope, this isn’t dumping. ‘Liquid fecal urgency’ (or, as we call in in New Zealand, a fart with follow-through 😁 is really common until our tummies work out their new rhythm. A few people have it forever, but overwhelmingly it settles in the first few days, of as eating returns to solids. I am 7 months post op bypass - I get this occasionally (I just don’t let out a quiet gentle fart any more - too risky!) still. Dunping - hot sweats, nausea but for me no vomiting, yawning, liquid fecal urgency, fatigue - feels like nasty food poisoning and suddenly 30-40 minutes later it stops. It has successfully put me off eating sweet stuff!
  11. Update : Had surgery on 9/24/09 lost 25 lbs went for my first fill to find out port is tilted had a revision done on 1/14/10. On date of surgery was 230 lbs now weighing 222 lbs. Feeling ok but kind of scared again I do not want to go through another revision. Does anyone have any suggestions of light exercises that I can do or should I wait until after my visit on 1/22/10?

    Calling all October Sleevers

Hi all. I had my revision sleeve on 10/16 from a band. I was only in the hospital 1 night, and it was very restless with the nurses pushing me to get up and move when I just wanted to sleep lol. My doc says clear liquids for the first week, then I can move on to protein shakes, milk, and cream soups. I am excited for that day! I had a hiatal hernia, which was the only complication, and made surgery take 3 hours. No reflux, but I have crazy gas pain in my shoulders. I can drink normally, it took a few days, but I am getting my 64 ozs in. I can walk easily now that I got some rest, it was hard in the hospital because I was just tired, but I can walk the kids to school and back, go around the block, even took a few trips to the grocery store. I lost about 10 lbs on the clear liquid preop diet, and about another 5 postop. I won't see my WLS until 4 weeks postop, so I'm hoping all continues to go well.
  13. I'm new to this too and I'm so glad you asked this question...I bought a multi-vitamin made by opurity that's labeled bypass and sleeve optimized multivitamin, I wonder if I'm gonna need other supplements too. Susan

    Hi All you Boston People!!

Hi I'm going to be having my VSG surgery at Newton Wellesley. So far I'm thrilled with their WLS program. We are targeting surgery for the first week in April. I'll find out definitely at my next appt. Newton Wellesly does more Gastric Bypasses than VSG - so I'm a little nervous about that, but like I said, so far I'm really impressed. Anybody have any experience with Newton Wellesley?
  15. When I started researching on why I might be having problems with my band I came across Dr. R.'s site and it listed hundreds of issues that people had with the band so it made me feel like maybe I screwed up because I got the band. Now I realize he was just trying to sell himself. I then found this forum and have learned that a lot of it has to do with my restriction and what I'm eating/not eating etc... So I'm happy I got the band because I still think the other is more drastic and scary to me even though my 19 year old is having gastric bypass surgery next month. Of course I worry like hell for her but it's her decision and she's researched it and seems to be happy with her choice and her surgeon. So all we do is support each other.:smile2:
  16. On 1/28 I had revision surgery going from VSG to a bypass due to feeling like I did not reach the goal that I wanted and was actually starting to regain. I am 13 days post op and feel no restriction. I mean none. When I first had the vsg surgery I felt restriction immediately even during the liquid phase but now it’s so different. I’ve even tried some solids maybe to see if I’m over reacting but still nothing. Anyone else has been through this ? I’m starting to worry.

    13 Days post op

I had a revision due to gerd and during the liquid and puree phase, I did not feel any restriction. Once I entered solid foods, I absolutely did and still do. I can not eat more than 2 ounces of protein at a time and a little veggies/fruit, and it keeps me full for about 3-4 hours. I am a little over 6 months. I'm close to goal and the weight loss has been steady. It is a definite learning curve though. My "I'm satisfied" flag does not come up till 30 to 40 min later so I've learned to always measure my food beforehand to avoid anything uncomfortable later and to chew a lot.

    2nd slippage, considering bypass

I've slipped again--it's the second time. Going in for revision Thursday. I don't want it removed, I want him to fix it or put in a bigger band. Ugh!

    Reflux Question

I know a couple of people who had the gastric bypass due to them having reflux problem. And they said it went away. Some people actually do have reflux issues after having the sleeve. Just my experience.
  20. I am almost in my 6th month of post surgery for the bypass. I have noticed that my bowel movements have changed a lot since before the surgery. I used to be constipated all the time. Now I barely eat anything, and I have to go. Sometimes even in the morning when I haven't eaten anything I have to go. Has this happened to anyone? It is to the point where I can't even leave my house, because I am afraid I am going to have an accident.

    Confused

My best friend, who had the original bypass surgery years ago, told me that she knew of 2 individuals who had been banded, and both of them had over time opted to have their bands removed...she did not know why, but she told me because she wanted me to be aware...I thanked her, continued to do my research and decided that the band would be the only type of WLS I would feel comfortable with. I've never regretted my decision, and I've never looked back. You also should do your own research, ask questions, attend an information session at a local clinic, and make your own informed decision based on what you believe to be the best choice for you. As you have no doubt read...this band highly self empowering weight loss tool...you will determine your level of success with your weight loss by the decisions and choices you make every day to comply with your diet and to adopt a healthier lifestyle which includes healthy eating and exercise. You likely won't be able to reach your goal weight without making the effort get there. Friends mean well...but they are not you. They can't see the "world view" that you do...and experiences that you have. You likely also are aware of the high risks for the negative effects of not loosing your excess weight. I encourage you to do your "homework", ask questions, and you will know what the right choice will be when you are ready to move forward. It needs to be your decision... Best wishes as you consider your options...
  22. Hi! About 12 years ago I had the lap band. I started at about 280 lbs and got down to 200 lbs but now I’m back to about 240 lbs (I should be around 140 lbs). I have terrible reflux, morning bile in my throat, and vomiting multiple times a week. I found a great revision doctor and he has approved me for revision to gastric bypass. I’m going in on 4/23 to make sure my band has slipped so that insurance pays. But regardless (I will self pay at this point- even if I have to sell plasma), I’m having the bypass and I’m so excited. Any one out there that can give me some good advice? What to expect? I appreciate any guidance!! Thank you so much! 💜

    Decrease Med Doses??

Actually the absorption rate isn't quicker because the food still travels the exact same path through the stomach and intestines as it did before surgery. It's Gastric Bypass patients that have the absorption issues because the intestines have been re-routed. Not Lap-Band patients.

    Thread Removed? Re:septic

Yes, the scar tissue heals over the staples and becomes a sealed unit again. The vertical sleeve gastrectomy, as I understand, doesn't even HAVE ten year stats as a stand alone procedure, so maybe this was referring to something else? Besides....worst case scenario, something happens to your sleeve, or God forbid you get stomach cancer, or whatever, whatever.....they convert you to a bypass.

    Being Bad

I was bad with my dinner last night. But I loved every bit of it. Today is another day and I will be better. I did not over eat, I just ate the wrong things. I had 3 coconut shrimp, great bread dunked in oil and cheese pizza. The local restaurant has a great football special when the N.E. Patriots play. Yes they won!!! On one of my other WLS groups one person spoke of her friend and by pass. The woman had by pass about 10 years ago and was doing great for a while. She is now in the hospital for revision. She stretched out her pouch and when the doctor went to sew her insides it was like cotton candy, her words not mine. The woman is on ice chips for a few days and in the hospital for at least 10 days. If that doesn't scare the S**T out of you, nothing will. I never was a drinker. In fact the last frozen Girl Scout cookie I had I broke out into hives and never had a drink since. That was over 15 years ago. So drinking was never anything I was going to miss with my journey. I never liked fast foods and yet I was and am obese. Fast food was always a comfort food but not for me. Give me bread and more bread, ice cream. I now have bread in restaurants and maybe once or twice a month in my own house. I think we all went into this new journey to get healthy, be thinner and move our bodies that were just sitting around. No one forced us but we need to be smarter with choices. Like CG always says, Listen to your doctor!! Listen to your dietitian and finally listen to your body. Have a great week. October is tomorrow and before you know it Halloween. I only buy candy I hate and I hate more candies than I like. I never had a problem with buying candy. Yes, I hate Snickers!! Arlene
