    September 2023 Surgery buddies

    Hi All, My surgery was on 9/28. I’m 27 years old and I am struggling mentally. I finished my first week of fluids and was not great with protein. My follow up is on 10/12 and I’m nervous. I’m 26 pounds down. I really am just trying to stay positive but I honestly just am regretting it because I’m not fully in control of my life right now. Can’t wait for 12/1 for real food.

    CartyGirl98 you're not doing anything wrong. I just saw my surgeons PA yesterday and was told that in the first 2 weeks you will lose from 7-15 pounds. Sounds like you are right on track. I am just finishing up my last day of pureed foods. At the beginning of starting it, I gained 2 pounds. I am down a total of 13 pounds since surgery on 9/22/23. Hang in there. When is your follow up?

    Already discouraged. I had bypass on 9/26/23 and even after 10 days of nothing but fluids and now on pureed and barely eating a teaspoon of each food allowed (LF cottage cheese, LF no sugar added yogurt, mashed potatoes) 3x/day and getting through my 4oz protein shake 3x day... I've only lost 7 pounds. I feel like I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what. Annoyed, and disappointed in myself.

    4 week Post-op feeling down

    We all have the regrets at some point, its a whole new world. You need to give yourself a pat on the back for getting to a month out. I promise it will get better very soon. I did not appreciate how big a surgery it was TBH. It is a massive learning curve. Use your team when you need to, that's what they are there for. As we all have been given different regimes we do not know what yours entails Lots of us can not make the liquid or protein goals. As soon as you can, you will feel so much better. Try your hardest to get the liquid in. Hot, cold or frozen. It doesn't matter which, just sip all day long. Lots of us still take drinks to bed too. One day you will be able to drink easier. Your internal stitch line will calm down and the swelling will dissipate. Then you can take bigger mouthfuls. Lots of liquid without food will made you nauseous too. Apparently we have the same amount of stomach acid as pre surgery and this rises [GERD] when we sleep lying flat. If this is a problem, try propping yourself on pillows, a bed wedge helped me. I had to drop the iron in my vitamins, it made me super nauseous. Don't be afraid to go back a step if the next step is too far for you at the moment. I never did puree, just looking at it made me heave. You are not alone on this site, We will help you all we can

    Excess Saliva (sliming?)

    I had my surgery non june 21st and for the last two months and have been salivating so much it causes me to throw up any and everything i eat its so bad that anyone me i put food in my mouth i gag is this normal at all never heard anything like this grom anyone else

I’m getting to the 1 year post operative point and just to slow my weight loss my minimum calorie intake was set to 2300 calories, very hard to do and follow my desire to only eat whole non processed food, so they have asked me to stop exercising until I can get 2300 a day and stay at a steady weight. It’s actually really hard to consume that whole foods to hit that 2300 calorie goal. Anyone else have similar problems?

    Hi there, Generally doing okay but have had a couple of bad days where I’ve struggled with cramps and bloating. Drinking water going well but some foods still upset my tummy. Weight loss has been steady. Lost 26kg ( 57.2 lbs) since my surgery on the 17th of July. Have my 3 month check up soon.

    Hi, yes I too had a dreadful week last week of impending doom and what have I done. It was a horrid feeling and I just couldn't see how I would ever feel 'normal' again. I was desperate about eating the wrong stuff, eating too much, never being able to eat again etc. Just starting puree today so maybe I'll feel a bit more positive this week. Good luck to you on the beginning of your journey to better health

    Best way to get protein

    I get mine from real food. Haven’t touched a protein shake or protein powder since my purée stage began. They were disgusting & I didn’t want to spend my life drinking any of my meals. Of course it’s easier to meet your protein goals as you progress & your meal size increases & additional protein via a shake may be needed (I ate a yoghurt with 20g to boost mine & often still do). I breakfast on oats with seeds & blueberries made on milk. Lunch is often mostly protein like prawns, calamari, yoghurt with seeds, savoury egg muffins, (gone off chicken tenders & omelettes at the moment). Dinner is meat & vegetables. My snacks can be any combination of cheese, multi grain crackers with liverwurst or labneh, peanut paste, nuts, jerky & I have a protein bar most nights to top up my protein. I used to make a chia pudding as a night time top up but wanted a change (mmm, I might make some today). I often add barley, chickpeas or lentils to any soups, stews or mince based dishes I make for extra protein too.
  11. What about adding a higher calorie shake like the Ensure Complete Nutrition, which has 350 calories in a 10 oz serving? It's generally considered too high in calories for using if you're trying to lose weight, but if you had three of those per day, you'd be getting 1050 calories and 90g protein right there before even having soft foods. You should be able to manage that amount capacity-wise with no problem. They have 8g fat and 15g added sugar, which might cause some risk of dumping, but I would think it would be worth a try. It seems like you'll need to hit about 1400 calories per day minimum to stop losing weight, whereas in the early days the guidelines you get from the doctor that are intended for weight loss may put you well under 1000.

    Best way to get protein

    At almost 2 years out I can almost eat anything. Some meals are always the same. Breakfast is always Greek yogurt and berries. My lunch is usually a bit like pick and mix - a bit of a few things, Which could be a selection of these, Smoked salmon, deli meats, burrata, cashew nuts, walnuts, blue stinky cheese, any fruit, tuna, boiled egg or any left over from a previous meal. The evening meal is usually food cooked from scratch for the family with carbs that I can not fit in my stomach yet, casseroles, roasts, pies, stews. I eat what I can. Later in the day I either eat my meals, left overs or have a protein bar or a protein yogurt. My protein is about 80 grams a day now and my calories are between 1200 and 1500

    Yes!! I tend to stick to the same foods. I'm not sure (for me anyway) is: 1. Fear of food effects 2. Not losing the weight 3. My hatred of cooking 4. I just know I like what I'm eating or 5 A combo of all of them! Of course I'm only 6 weeks out sooo we shall see, but, to be honest I've always been a picky eater (I almost died as a toddler because I was picky) - I just know what I like!

    Best way to get protein

    I live on low fat string cheese and oikos triple zero yogurt. I have it for breakfast every day and sometimes lunch too. I don't know why I haven't gotten tired of them after a year but I still look forward to my cheese and yogurt lol. Do you find that you eat a lot of the same food now? I used to get bored with foods and change often but after the surgery I eat the same foods happily and don't want to change. It's a weird side effect of the surgery for me at least. Grapes are my other food I live on but that's not the protein food you were looking for.

    I use a pure isolate whey protein powder. I add it to my cooking. Bulksupplements.com has an excellent one with no flavor!
  17. In the early stages after bypass, there is a higher risk of dumping. I think that's why we're told to steer clear of the carby foods (aside from the weight loss aspect of things). I'm with @Arabesque, it's important that you consume highly-nutritious foods right now, while you're restricted. Perhaps adding fat will help? Again, with the risk of dumping, there may be some trial and error to work through. But fat is calorie-dense. Can you tolerate protein shakes? Adding a few of those each day might be a good way to boost your calories. Also, excess protein is stored as fat - that might be helpful for you.

    4 weeks post op! Eating less??

    Great to hear you're feeling well. I too had surgery and am now 2 weeks PO. I've managed ok I reckon on the liquid stage and ready to move to puree tomorrow. I am however feeling quite a bit of pain in my right side. Like stabbing pain sometimes when I stand up or move. I unfortunately took a really bad cold after surgery and was sneezing and coughing so I was tender anyway but just wondered if this pain is normal and will it ease 🤔

    I had surgery on 19th sept. Just about to start puree stage. I'm still having pain on my right side around my scar area but it feels more muscle/internal pain sometimes shooting/stabbing pain. Is this normal and will it ease with time?

    Let's Talk About Maintenance

    Transitioning to maintenance was both easy & challenging for me. Easy was that I had already made my choices about how/what I was going to eat & had been eating that way for most of my weight loss. What I found difficult was being able to eat portions large enough to stop the weight loss & work out how much I needed to consume to maintain. It’s why I kept losing for another 11 months. Though I also believe this was where my body wanted to be. Yes, I weigh myself regularly & yes I worry about what I weigh right down to the grams. While I don’t consistently weigh & track what I eat every meal I am conscious about portion sizes & the calorie content of foods even when I’m dining out or socialising at a friend’s. I do random checks & introduce new foods/recipes slowly & carefully. And yes, I still do protein first, then vegetables too & aim to stick to nutrient dense foods. This is the longest I’ve been able to maintain my weight ever in my 58 years. But I’m not on a diet to lose or maintain my weight. This is just how & what I eat. (The power of words.) I enjoy eating & food but it’s a different focus in my life - it’s more about what I need & less about what I want. Hell yeah, the old mindless eating habits are still just there sitting on my shoulder. (Can’t eradicate them though would be amazing if we could.) A bit like that angel on one shoulder & devil on the other. I try to keep the Angel of new habits I’ve established as the dominant thinking & actions. On the days the devil is stronger, I usually catch myself but … there are times. Though I try not to beat myself up if the devil wins.

    Calories at maintenance shock

    So, post-op he is definitely not advocating for a pound of veggies per day, at least no time soon. That goal is for a person who has not had surgery or is years out and has regained a pretty standard appetite. What he does suggest for bariatric patients is that for that honeymoon period of the first year or so, you focus on protein first. But as time goes on and your hunger returns and you have more capacity to add foods, you should increase the veggies you eat while keeping your protein and starch servings small by comparison. He likes to say veggies should be the star of your meal. In other words, instead of going from 3 oz of chicken to 6 oz so you can feel more full, you would eat your usual 3 oz of chicken and fill up the rest of the way on healthy veggies (but only to your personal capacity, whatever that is). Same with snacks. If you get hungry and need a snack, make it a healthy one with veggies instead of a junk food snack. From what I gather, the strategy is one that really helps to combat that weight gain in later years when it becomes a little too easy to eat a lot more like you used to (the way that got us all into trouble to begin with!)

    Let's Talk About Maintenance

    Trying very hard to maintain, but the hardest thing to get into that state is my BRAIN. I've not only spent the last 2 years meticulously monitoring every bite of food I put in my mouth (even though my doctor didn't insist upon it I've been counting calories since day 1), but I spent the last 20 YEARS in the mindset that if I wasn't actively trying to LOSE weight, I was going backward. So, at 41, I have to learn how to eat to maintain which for some reason is VERY hard for me. I can't get out of the "weight loss" mindset. I don't eat enough. I monitor and measure and check and re-check everything. I pour myself a bowl or plate of something and put half of it back. I just can't seem to accept that I am *done* losing weight.
  23. well, if it was me, I would be indulging in higher calorie foods but obviously don't overdo it. allow yourself a few little luxuries like pasta and bread if you can handle them.

    Let's Talk About Maintenance

    There was a very active maintenance thread a few years ago. I’m glad someone is starting the discussion again! I’m a few years into maintenance. I never forget that I had WLS but it’s really only in the forefront when I’m dealing with food. When I prep my meals I have full control and prefer it. If I’m eating out I scan the menu and immediately go to small plates or side orders. Very rarely will I get an entree because I’ll never finish it and I don’t really like leftovers (even though I take them). Otherwise this is my new normal. It doesn’t feel like a burden. I actually don’t even remember what it felt like before when I was obese. I feel like I was always this size (I think that must be a form of body dysmorphia). Sometimes I think I may not even notice if I gain/lose a substantial amount of weight. So I keep measurements and weigh often for peace of mind. So my lesson learned is to confront any WLS related issues very very quickly.

    I'll start with a question for my maintenance buddies: Do you ever "forget" you had surgery and it becomes a new normal? I think about my sleeve/food all the time... as much as I did when I was actively losing. I'm always aware that I've had surgery, and I'm always trying to figure out when and how to eat. It's not a bad thing.. just a thing.
