How long after gastric sleeve are you at risk of getting Dumping Syndrome ?

I was told no caffeine. I do drink a decaf coffee with my protein shake chocolate, vanilla or strawberry, plus a few pumps of sugar free calorie free syrup. -
So how much can you really eat??? 1 hear from now
SarahMan80 replied to Supafly82's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m just over a year out and eat 3-5 small meals a day. They consist of about 2.5 to 4 ounces protein and .2 to 1 cup vegetables. Now, I will say that the consistency of the meal changes things a lot. If it is a grilled meat or something with little to no sauce I can’t eat that much…but if is ground meat or something with a good sauce I can eat a lot more. I also find that eating bread-y stuff can be touchy….some days I can eat more than others. Overall, my meals are 1/3 to 1/2 of a regular person’s portion. My daily calorie intake is usually between 1100 and 1500. -
Trying to get out of my head....

My nutritionist is kinda trash. But my surgeon and the nurse practitioner are fantastic, and they said not to count calories at all. Just watch the protein, carbs, and fats. So that's what I do. I may need to try that fitness app. I just worry because I can look at what I'm eating, and how much, and I know I'm not getting enough in. But my mind just has such a hold on me right now that I literally can't force myself to eat more. Even when I know I need to. I'm hungry, I'm under what I should be eating, but it's like I won't allow it. I need to figure out how to break that. I wonder if I keep hitting stalls because I'm not eating enough......is that a thing?? -
Are you on full liquids? I was curious how many calories people are getting. I seem to be at 350 - 375
-
Exactly! I'll start feeling on top of the world, making moves I haven't made in years, then come crashing down. But no surprise on 500 calories a day. We'll both get there and be better than ever. I can't wait.

I peeked at your surgery date on your profile and it said you had your surgery in May of 2022. Every plan is different and if you are comfortable with your nutritionist ? Follow their advice. I am the opposite of you (my hunger hormone never came back- I am a year and a half from surgery). I do the same thing with “I don’t want to gain weight back” so I monitor my weight by stepping on the scale once a week. I found that if I did it multiple times a week I would start to obsess so I only do it once a week. calorie tracking is another good tool. My nutritionist is constantly on my back to track my calories (I am kind of terrible at it….. 😅 it’s okay when I have my set schedule during the school year but during summer my schedule is less defined and my meals end up sparse or nonexistent just because I’m not hungry) -

I actually thought butter was a little higher in calories than that. It’s been so long since I have bought real butter. I did find a recipe online that is surprisingly good that is doctored up margarine basically. The red wine vinegar and red onion is another good suggestion though. I will definitely use it as my husband insists that we have surf and turf for every holiday. Guess there are worse things. Lol. -

Obviously, butter/clarified butter would be my first choice, but of you are looking to watch calories, how about a nice mignonette (if you like vinegar, that is). Its basically red wine vinegar (or whatever vinegar u have on hand), and shallots (or red onions). Goes great with shellfish. Or maybe some dry white wine and lemon juice? P.S. depending on what ur personal calorie limits are, a tbsp of butter is only 100 cals…which is more than enough for dipping say a good sized lobster tail. The trick is to have it on the side vs. pouring it all over. Good Luck! ❤️ -
Okay so I just made the sauce and it’s not bad at all. I tried it with steamed veggies cause my hubby is still working on the rest of dinner on the grill. I have to confess I didn’t measure anything because I only needed a smaller portion and didn’t want to bother with the math but now I wish I had so I can replicate it. I do know that I used more garlic and onion than called for but that’s always a matter of taste. Anyways, It’s not drawn butter type of good, of course, but it’s much better than just the melted fake butter I had last time right out of the tub and adding the chicken stock (diluting the margarin) decreases the calories so win-win. My husband likes it a lot. He already asked if I can make it again when we have salmon. If you like garlic and onion flavors i’d say it’s definitely worth trying. I’m sure it would be even better with fresh garlic.

Trying to get out of my head....

I'm looking into therapists. Not sure if it's a food issue or a trauma issue since I had a horrific childhood. My surgeon's office said not to worry about calories, also. They said to do 60-80g of protein, less than 50 carbs per day, and less than 50 fats per day. I'm more obsessive with the labels now than I was when I was on keto. It's also frustrating because in the 9 months I was on keto, I lost 100 pounds with only 1 short stall about 3 months in. It was so much easier to lose the weight back then than it is now. I'm fighting tooth and nail for every pound and hitting stall after stall. I worked out then and I work out now. But since it's such a struggle now, I'm finding I get panicky and start REALLY restricting what I eat. I've upped my work outs in both length and intensity, I religiously watch the labels and count every carb and fat in everything that goes in my mouth, and I not only don't eat junk but I don't think I even eat enough PERIOD. Yet here I am, day 4 of the same weight again. No matter what I do, I lose 5-7 pounds, then sit at a weight for a week, then lose 3 or 4, then sit another week, then lose 2 or 3 and the sit again. I have no issue with doing the work, but somehow I thought it would come a bit easier with only 20% of my stomach. It's harder to lose weight now than it was before the surgery!!!! Just freaks me out and my mind goes to not so good places. -
Was it good? I melted the butter and dipped my fork tines in the butter to get the taste, but not too many calories. I’ve made sauces with olive oil or grape seed oil, or cook with the oils in spray can form from Trader Joe’s to keep amounts low. Sometimes I heat up a low calorie salad dressing for a dip, it brings out delicious flavors warmed up. I went out last fall with friends and ate my lobster with just the lemon. It was still tasty!

that's going to vary a lot for people depending on several factors (how active you are, your metabolic rate, how much weight you're trying to maintain (you'll have to eat quite a bit less to maintain 120 lbs than you will 160 lbs)), etc. but in any event, no - you won't be eating 4 oz for life. NO ONE would be able to tell I've had surgery at this point - and it's been a few years since that might have been obvious. If they notice at all, they'd assume I'm a light or careful eater, like many of my women friends who have never been obese. I eat around 1700 calories to maintain - I can go higher if I'm exercising a lot (but again, calories will vary depending on those factors I mentioned. Some women here on BP can maintain on 2000 calories - others can only eat 1200). When I go out to eat, I'll usually order an appetizer. Or I'll order an entree and take half of it home - pretty much the same as a lot of my female friends. an example I often use is pizza. Before surgery, my husband and I would order a large pizza, and we'd each eat half of it. Now I can only eat 1-2 pieces before my stomach tells me it's time to stop. anyway, hope that gives you an idea.. -
no, you won't - not with that large calorie deficit. As others have said, you'll hit stalls along the way and your weight may fluctuate occasionally by a pound or two, but if you stick to your clinic's plan, your trend will be down. I didn't start regaining until I hit my lowest weight (in the 130s), but it's VERY common to gain 10-20 lbs after hitting your lowest weight (the rebound gain is usually in year 2 or 3). But while you're in the losing phase, as long as you're sticking to your plan, no. You'll continue to lose.

Okay so I have been searching since I posted this and haven’t really found anything better than this recipe so far. I realized that I don’t have any fresh garlic anyways so I am just going to try it with rehydrated “garlic garlic” seasoning and see how it goes. With this one modification it’s pretty low calorie so I am hoping I like it. https://www.wctv.tv/2021/12/20/healthy-chef-ashleys-low-calorie-garlic-butter-sauce/

i try to stay away from olive oil because of the calories but I will have to try the cold sauce another day. I am out of yogurt and don’t like Mayo. But it sounds good, thanks. I did find a recipe online that sorta jazzes up the fake butter I may try for tonight since I have the ingredients. -

It’s like we share a brain, I swear. I went over 600 calories yesterday and the mental beat down I gave myself was horrible. Even though I burned 400 calories with exercise that same day. 🤦♀️ I had the sleeve first in 2017 and truthfully should have been diagnosed with some sort of restrictive eating disorder. I’m trying to be better about it this time with my revision but old habits have emerged. My nutritionist says calories for the day are not important, that I need to only stay around 60g protein, under 35 carb, and under 30 fat amounts. I am trying to get on board with her way of thinking. I personally benefit from a therapist because my issue is with control because of trauma background. Not a Bariatric therapist, just A therapist. Because it’s not about the food. It’s about my control and fear issues. I am practicing intuitive eating, but I don’t know if it would help you since I think you’ve said you feel hunger quite often. I don’t, so eating when I feel hungry has helped me since my body doesn’t usually talk to me unless it needs something 🤷🏼♀️ I’ve also spoke with my team’s psychologist a few times. If your team has one that could work. Wish I could be more help. But I’m afraid all I’ve offered is a “you are NOT alone” vibe. -
Meal ideas for all stages after surgery?
LookingForward22 replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use the bubly drops in my plain Water without issue. I’m sure that’s not how they intended it to be used but gives the water a nice subtle flavor when I want a little change from plain water. I like that it’s zero carbs and zero calories, and I have a sensitivity (digestive) to some artificial sweeteners so crystal light and things like that aren’t an option for me - but this keeps me for reaching for juice or other calorie drinks when I want something different. -

Brunch with my BF 2 eggs w/ potatoes, crimini mushrooms, zucchini, shallots, red peppers, baby spinach, melted mozzarella, herbed goat cheese whole abs whole grain toast. Coming in at a whopping 1310 cals. I estimate I had about 300 cals worth. I’m sure the majority of the hidden cals were from butter or oil while cooking. I can’t help but think of I made this at home it would be 1/4 the calories. But this will be either two or three more meals depending on who finishes it. -
I already posted this question on another thread but really need a response for tonight so I will post here too. I used to eat my shellfish with drawn butter but of course that’s out nowadays and last time I had it with melted I can’t believe it’s not butter but it’s just not the same. I am wondering if anyone has a lower calorie buttery seafood sauce that is good on lobster and snow crab legs?? So far I found one online that used I can’t believe it’s not butter, onion, roasted garlic, chicken stock, lemon and seasonings which sounded promising but they roasted the garlic in olive oil which I try to stay away from just cause of the calories. Can I just roast the garlic with some Pam spray maybe?? How do you guys eat seafood post surgery?

Meal ideas for all stages after surgery?
ShoppGirl replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pre surgery I drank a 12 pack of Coke Zero a day. Now, 16 months out I have not had a single one. My team said I am medically cleared to have it but it is associated with weight gain. They still don’t know exactly why the zero calorie beverage causes it but study after study shows the association and that’s enough to have kept me off of it. I like the crystal light. I use two packets to mix it by the gallon at home and have a ziplock bag full of them at all times in my purse. I like that I can switch up the flavors. A newer option is cirkul. Its a drink bottle that they sell flavored cartridges for. My aunt swears the flavors are even better than crystal light. They have their own website or you can get the starter pack at bed bath and beyond. She likes that you can adjust the intensity of the flavor because she likes them with more water. I suppose you can play around with the amount of water you add to crystal light and achieve the same thing though. I also like to mix two flavors together when I mix a gallon to create new flavors. -

Confession: i love going to over-priced gourmet grocery stores and buying fancy stuff to try (or just look at, lol) A sample of this morning’s haul: fancy crackers and a couple teaspoons of this foie gras and pork terrine/spread. Its like dessert and a meal in one. 218 calories. Ate it all. Im also hopped up on 2 iced americanos i drank while people watching on a patio. Had them black so i didn’t bother logging them. -
I have had a rough ride with nausea and vomiting from day 1. My food and calorie intake was really poor. At about 4 months out my calories were about 350 to 500 a day. I just could not meet my protein target. I just stopped loosing weight. It took me another 6 weeks of really hard work, sourcing different foods and trying to up my intake of protein. When I got to around 800 calories a day, my weight began to drop again. I felt so much better and stronger. I have just had a hotel holiday abroad and I have really struggled with the food. My Cal count went back down to 500. I didn't loose any weight once again. Despite all the walking, swimming and dancing I have done.

You will likely soon hit the "three week stall" (do a search for it here) where your loss will slow or stop and possibly even increase a bit. This is entirely normal and totally unrelated to what food phase you are in (people who are still on liquids as well as those who have been on soft foods since the start go through it.) It has to do with the matter that initially you are losing a big chunk of water weight associated with your glycogen stores (basically stored carbohydrate) being depleted due to your low calorie intake. Once that is depleted, your body shifts gears to burn your stored fat, which burns more slowly, so the weight loss slows a bit, too. Entirely normal. In our program they specifically tell us that their patients tend to do better as they move into real food - not strictly from a loss rate perspective, but for the sake of feeling better and more energetic, which leads to being more active and helping to maintain a more sustainable loss over the long haul. I was starting to nibble at the gym again after a couple of weeks, not for the sake of boosting loss rate (it didn't need it...) but for maintaining the habit (and not allowing my wife to use me as an excuse for not going!) I was certainly not burning any more calories there than at home, but more just starting to get a bit more variety in activities.

Even at 800-1000 calories your body will still be in a pretty significant calorie deficit and you will lose. The higher the calories the slower of course. Some programs have calories Even higher than that a little further out. My team didn’t really give a calorie goal. Best to just go by your teams plan for you though. It’s hard but trust the process. It works.
