    Looking for a Twin (03/07)

I have about 40 I need to lose. I gained a bit between all my complications and breaking my foot over the summer. I am more excited for the damn heartburn to stop. I keep reading all the stories where heartburn is completely gone right after surgery! I can't wait
  2. Yesterday I found out that my sleeve surgery date is Friday, July 29, 2011.....only a week and a half away. I am so excited and SOO nervous!!! I am ready to be on the other side already. If only there were a way to go to sleep then wake up and it's over. OH WAIT......that's called surgery. Well I'll just say this....I'M READY! I'm most nervous about complications and the what-if's AND the cost of the what if's. I'm a cash patient so if ANYTHING happens as a result of the surgery, I'm up a creek....or might even be 6' under. See, my insurance won't cover the surgery or any medical complications resulting from the surgery. Well that stinks. Looks like my Dr better be on his game that day. No jacking around inside my belly mister! I hope I'm one of the 'good' statistics. I guess I should start praying now. I'm nervous about throwing up, being nauseous, not losing weight, hair falling out, saggy 'girls', mushy stomach....I could go on but I think you get the picture. I begin my pre-op diet this Friday, one week from my surgery. I've already warned folks that it would be best to not talk to me next week.....I might be SLIGHTLY on edge. Hey, it's fair to warn them. If they cross my threshold, whether at work or at home, it's at their own risk. Heck, they might even get eaten. I'm trying to decide what I want my 'last meal' to be - I love Mexican, Italian, American, Chinese.....do I need to go on? NO!!!!! That's why I got here! Oh well, whatever it is I KNOW it will be AWESOME! That leads me to where I am today.......WAITING!!! Excited and Nervous! I am so thankful that my family is supporting me. My confidence is growing with their words of encouragement. I must go for now...I just wanted to share my thoughts and feelings. Thanks in advance to all of you on this site. It has REALLY helped me - it helped with my decision, learning do's and don't's, what to take to the hospital, what to purchase for after the surgery, etc. I have been a reading-fool on this site. LOVE IT!
  3. I had the sleeve because I didn't want to risk complications that can happen with the bypass. My surgery was October 17th. I never experienced gerd before but did have it rather severely for the first 2 weeks and strangely it was worse when drinking water. That has thankfully passed. I have a high BMI but I'm ok with not losing quite as fast as with bypass. Maybe it will help with lose skin. I am determined to lose all my excess weight, not the 65-70% average predicted.
  4. Oh my goodness. Im so sorry that happened to you. Im sure everyone thinks of the risks but rupturing your esophogus certainly wasnt one that I thought of. Hope you heal quickly and get past all this and onto your new life very soon with no further complications.

    The Decision: Gastric Plication

I am a 44 yo registered nurse who is a Director of Quality in a small hospital in NWO. I have researched all my options. Orginally I wanted the VSG but now I really feel that the gastric plication is the tool I need to increase my chance of losing weight and keeping it off. I like that it is revisable and is not associated with malabsorption . I made my decision after two years of lurking on weight loss sites and trying various diets, personal training and pills. I would lose 15 and gain 20. I have watched my ability to snorkel and walk on vacation turn into shortness of breath and fatigue. I walk up the stairs to beat of 132 pulse. This has improved with cardio at the gym (120's ) I have beat myself up. Refused to go out with my husbands friends because they are thin and I am embarassed for my husband. Really I have spent my time making other people happy and not myself necessarily. Weight loss will not make me beautiful ( It is what is inside that counts). It will not make me successful as I feel that I am succesful professionally regardless of my weight. Weight loss will increase my energy and my overall health. My fears are complications related to the surgery. I am having my consultation appointment by phone with Dr. Brad Watkins from Cincinnati Weight Loss on Sept 7, 2011. I am 5 ft 3 inches and 216.5 today. This is a 38.4 BMI . So far I dont have high blood pressure or diabetes. I dont want them either. I will keep you posted:)
  6. I have been feeling funny in my tummy for the past 24 hours. Just wondering what this is. If you don't know me, I was banded on Sept 30th, so I am 3.5 weeks post op. I had complications after surgery and ended up in the hospital for a week (possible reaction to the band, possible infection). I have been doing fine since then and I am now on mushies. Since my surgery I have lost 28 lbs. I am on CPAP and I noticed that my stomach was filling with air while I sleep, so I turned down the pressure...All better now, but it worried me that I was stretching out my stomach. I hadn't really been hungry, but yesterday I felt like my stomach was growling all day. Even after eating I felt this weird "bubble-like/rumbling" feeling in my stomach. I took some lortab elixer and it seemed to help. My surgeon's office told me that they would give me a fill when ever I felt like I needed it, but I thought I would put it off as long as I could since I was loosing weight and since I had complications(wanted to let everything heal good). Is this spasms or is it hunger? Should I get a fill?
  7. This is off the Tylenol topic but I had my gastric bypass on 12/11. I read your story and you are amazing for hanging in there so long. I am so surprised at all the stories of the 1 or 2 day stays and a little tylenol here and there. I had complications so was in ICU for 5 days for closer monitoring but went home after 8days. Now just trying to get all the water weight I came home with. I gained about 20# in the hospital. Very discouraging! All is a process and just akes time. I keep trying to remind myself that. Hope you are doing well now.

i'm pre-op, for the second time

I'm curious about revisions. What are the criteria for qualifications for such? Do you still have to be a 40 BMI or just have a complication from original WLS?

It all comes to personal choice. I would strongly suggest doing your homework before making a decision. Both procedures have their pros and cons, and unfortunately both procedures have their myths too. Research the actual medical facts, not just anecdotal evidence here. They did a very large study, over 4000 Lap Band patients, and found that about 8% suffer complications. It's also very important to take in account the number of people with slips, complications, and needing removal because they abused their band. Unfortunately that number is scary high. It seems either surgeons aren't educating their patients enough or people are foolishly ignoring their instructions, but whatever the case I've seen more cases of complications because of patient negligence than I can count. How much you lose with the band is entirely up to you. Whether or not you keep that weight off is also up to you. The band is just a tool, not a magic fix for fat, and to be successful with it requires you to change your eating habits for a lifetime. Best wishes with whichever you decide!
  10. I assume you want to have your band with you for life, but is this realistic?; I mean if there are no complications how long can the band be intact inside your body? are there studies about this?

i'm pre-op, for the second time

From what I gather, for most insurance companies, it just needs to be complications from the first surgery. I'm not even in the obese category. Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app

    How Many Pounds?

My wife got an RNY 10 years ago and loss less than half of her excess weight. The is no guarantee that an RNY will loose more than a sleeve. For me the sleeve offered fewer complications and a more normal lifestyle. I am 5 weeks out and 50 lbs off my Pre-op-diet weight. I will easily loose 80 to 100 in 6 months. Sent from my iPad using VST
  13. I'm on pre op diet, 2 days left, damn it feels good to say that! My pre op started pretty bad, cravings, mind telling me things would taste amazing. I kept looking back on my life. Did I really enjoy that? Did I need that? Did I NEED that? Nope. Not at all. Determination is where it's at, get your mind in the right spot. Remember everything that's hard right now, and then imagine a world you live in where things aren't so complicated. America has become such a foody type nation, everything we do revolves around food, so much that it's killing our children and loved ones. I got tired of living to eat instead of eating to live.
  14. I've had complications too (covered by insurance) and in my opinion a self-pay needs to consider not whether you can afford to pay for ONE operation out of pocket, but whether you can afford to pay for TWO operations. If it's going to put you on the street, then it's a much tougher decision. But if you want this and you can afford to pay if complications arise, I say go for it. I would absolutely get my band again, and even with my complications I don't regret it at all. Good luck with your decision!

    Surgery Envy?

:nervous I attended my first WLS support group meeting last night at the Medical Center where I'll be having my surgery. All but one of the people who stood up to give their testimonials were RNY people. One lady, whom I had met at a seminar in Sept. '06 was there. She came over to tell me all about her surgery, which was 11/29/06, and her weight loss--over 80 lbs. so far!!! I got a little envious, and even started wondering if RNY would be better--they seem to lose weight so fast. This is ridiculous, I've been researching and considering lap band for over 3 years! Does anybody else get these doubts? I guess when I think about it, the whole reason I felt lap band was better for me all along was that the weight loss seems to be a little slower, and it seems that there are less complications. Plus, the mal-absorptive feature of RNY is sort of counter-intuitive in my mind (for me). I would never deign to tell somebody else what is right for them, but lap band always seemed right for me....still....that envy sure did creep up on me. Thanks, Carol Insurance approved 4/17/07, waiting on a surgery date--should be in May

    chronic cough at night

You may want to post this on the "lap band complications" thread too, OK? You'll get more "play" there. However, may I suggest you go to your regular doc to rule out allergies or infection or some other pulmonic issue? It may be your band, or it may not. How long have you had these issues? (You just say "recently") Have your regular doc rule out your lungs etc.
  17. From what I understand, bypass is the gold standard for bariatric surgery. To name a few; Gastric bypass patients lose between 60 to 80 percent of excess body weight in the first year. Gastric sleeve patients lose between 50 to 70 percent of excess body weight in two years. Bypassing the intestines produces a malabsorptive aspect (less time for your body to absorb calories since your intestinal tract is shorter) that effectively reduces calorie consumption. Gastric bypass surgery has been around longer. Its results and complications have been studied and its benefits proven. Gastric bypass is more complicated, has a slightly higher overall risk profile but it does produce more weight loss. I appreciate your posts, but seriously I will setup a consult with my surgeon to determine what is best for me. Just thought I would get a head start and receive feedback from individuals who may have decided to a bypass vs. a sleeve is all. -Thanks-
  18. Hello Everyone! Got a call from the surgeon's office yesterday, I'm approved! I'm happy to say I have a tenative surgery date of November 3rd. Why so late you may be asking, let me give you the reason why. While I was doing my 6 month pre-op I decided on breast reduction surgery. In late July I had around 7 lbs removed total. Unfortunately a small infection developed which caused stress on the already tight skin. The infection cleared up, but has left an open wound that a 4x4 gauze pad just covers.:tongue2: There is new skin growth starting to cover the area, :scared2: but it's very slow in getting better. ( 7 weeks tomorrow) It must heal completly before surgery. If it should somehow get better quickly, they will move my date up. If it doesn't I'll have to push the date even later. Here I thought I'd be having it done this month! I don't regret having the breast reduction, even with this huge open wound, it is great having all that weight removed and I no longer have to order a extended cup size that never really fit anyway. (40H to 40C) Plus,it was all covered by insurance where breast lifts are not. I am praying for this to heal quickly and without any more complications so that I may finally be an offical bandster!! Thanks for reading, sorry for such a long post.
  19. I know how frustrated you are Emily. It is really hard in the first stages of being banded especially when you read on here how fast the weight falls off of some people. First off you should be congratulated for your 10 pounds pre and 10 pounds post op.. maybe you need to remind yourself just how heavy that is and go and pick up a few bags of sugar!!..(you won't feel so down about it then).. I was BMI 41 when I was banded on June 18th. After one month I lost 18 pounds. I was very pleased BUT I had many complications along the way. I have lost 30 pounds to date but haven't lost anthing for the past three weeks. I think because I had infections and my eating was just way out of whack. I also haven't been getting enough Protein. I do think that maybe you should call your dietician, give them a weekly journal of your eating and exercise.. maybe you need to increase your calories a bit more!??.. I read on here earlier that one woman could get out of her plateau by upping her calories (we are talking a couple hundred not a big mac style increase!!)..and changing her exercise routine..that would trick her body into moving the weight again... I used to do this when I was on weight watchers and would see a good weight loss afterwards. I am going to try again once I ge my ankle out of its plaster cast and can start exercising again!. Good luck to you and KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.. you are doing an amazing job!!!... keep in touch it will be good to hear how you are getting on. kind regards Kizzie

    Pre-Ops Diets are evil!

I've seen others not have to diet. The theory is that a diet will reduce glycogen stores in the liver which effectively shrinks the liver. Smaller liver=less chance of complication. Some doctors don't think it's going to shrink the liver in any meaningful way, so they just skip the diet and give you something to clean you out either the day before or the day of.
  21. I was recently banded at Bajanor hospital on 033106. I have not had any complications from the surgery. I went done on Friday the 31st, early flight and had surgery that evening, stayed the night at the Lucerna on Saturday night and flew back Sunday to Texas. I went back to work on Tuesday. If you have any questions, just PM. Good Luck! sam
  22. I'm in puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Hopefully, and if everything goes well, in less that 12 hours I will have the VSG. I'm very nervous. It is a huge change. I'm afraid of dying, not for me, but for those I love. I would never want to make my mom or sister suffer, but I have deprived them of a life with me because I'm always depress in my house, or of feeling ashamed of my weight. I know recovery will be painful, but I hope and pray to God this goes well and I can handle everything with strength and peace. I know once I'm awake from surgery, it won't mean everything is perfect. I already had a few surgeries in the past and complications happened about 2 weeks after. So whomever is reading this and believe in the power of prayer, please send some this way. I will forever thank you. I'm having this surgery because I'm tired of seeing the best years of my life go by, and I don't do nothing about it. I'm tired of all the struggles, I'm afraid of my diabetics getting worse, I'm tired of being tired, feeling hopeless in a room isolating myself. I've suffer several emotional disorders due to my obesity and my fear of being seen like this. But is time to change my life and embrace this new opportunity. I've decided to do this journal to keep track of all the changes. I want this to be about me. I'm doing this for me but also for my family because I want to give them the best of me, and I never want to forget that they were my most important motivation. This is one of the hardes decisions I have made in my life, there is nothing easy about this surgery. I will have to find the strength to say goodbye forever to many foods that were nothing but addictive and unhealthy. I have to to this the right time this time.
  23. I know three people who have been to Bajanore since October '04 and they are all three doing great - they haven't reported any complications. I am scheduled for 8/25 - very nervous, but my best friend did it there - she is an RN at a hospital and was completely confident in the doctor, the facility, etc. We'll see! /chris

I was excited not I'm Scared!!

Hi Jeanette, Researching the good the bad and the ugly of any decisions is always a smart move. While yes these things can happen, they are complications that most of the time can be avoided by proper band practice! (pardon the pun) Following the rules that your surgeon gives you and practicing good eating mechanics and food choices will all help to prevent things like esophageal dilation, or pouch dilation. As you search for your "green zone" for optimal weight loss and satiety as you begin to have fills, making sure that you are never too tight, where you are having issues swallowing liquids or having reflux will also help to ensure that you do not experience band erosion. There is a down side to everything, but with proper usage, open honest communication between you and your surgeon, and adherence to guidelines provided to you the odds of you experiencing any of these complications is minimized. One step at a time. Keep a good outlook and don't let fear dictate your actions for you. Read, research, and then decide what is best for you. If you are having serious doubts, my advice is to schedule a session with your surgeon and compile a good list of questions and have them answered before your surgery date. Best of luck to you!
  25. I just had my surgery this Tuesday and despite doing the research on everything for the surgery prior to making a decision, I still had a major anxiety attack the day before my surgery and started reading more of the complications and really letting it get to me. I did get an actual anxiety prescription the day before just so I could be well rested and relaxed going in which really helped. What I can say is that I'm doing good, although I've picked up a cold and a bacteria infection unrelated to surgery so immune system is clearly lower the week of the surgery. Probably pushed too hard as I went back to work Thursday after a Tuesday surgery which was a mistake. My dad had the surgery 10yrs ago and has lost 150lbs and is likely only with us into his late 60s as a result of this surgery which prompted me as well. I don't feel very hungry, so unlike diets it's nicer. The stomach pain and nausea will be nice to recover from in a week or so, but I am feeling up beat and have dropped 10lbs just prepping for the surgery and since so there is early results. Good luck and stay calm!
