Specialist: 4-5months stall. Explanations please!!
Ginnnnie replied to Ginnnnie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@BabySpoonsI track everything. I have a lot more protein than Carbs. Dietitians excuse is i am not having enough carbs to regulate my protein. But is when i introduced carbs into my meal that everything went belle up. I don't follow a very strict keto, as i tend to have carb substitutes or healthier carbs like shirataki and bulgur. I am doing everything right (and then some) Sadly, i cant get on Ozempic, cos it is not recommended for those who have parents or grandparents with medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) Food intake throughout the day as i measured is about 16- 18 oz on a very hungry day and it is spread across the day. predominantly protein cos those fill me up more and cos i work out quite often i am mostly always hungry but cant eat a lot as i get full easily when i have protein. I guess that is why i am also able to take a lot of water. Dietitan claim water can also be a culprit. At this point i am convinced no one knows anything and just grasping at thin air. So i am reverting back to just having full protein with a hint of carb sparingly. and see if that works. I should prob stick to what has worked for my body rather than..... It would be good to hear from someone who experience similar and know if they found the culprit -
Hey friends. I’m having an emotional time in my life right now and I’m having a hard time coping because I can’t run to food for comfort. What are some ways you guys cope now that food is no longer an option? I’m also working on setting up mental health appointments. But while I wait… I thought I’d ask just incase suggestions from others going through EXACTLY what I’m going thru will help me. Thank you in advance❤️

Torn between counting carbs or counting calories
Big Matty replied to KathyLev's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I count everything. I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2022 and was put on a sodium restriction. Just two months before my projected VSG surgery date my A1C was 9.6% and I was put on diabetic meds(Metformin and Semaglutide), given a blood sugar meter with instructions to check my blood sugar twice daily, and told to cut out all sugars in my diet. Around the same time as my Type-2 Diabetes diagnosis my Bariatric Surgeon had me go on a Keto/Atkins very low carb diet prior to the liver shrinking diet due to my extremely high 71.5 BMI. That was my first time on a 'low carb' diet since I tried South Beach in 2004, and I really liked it for how it made me feel and how much easier it has become to find low-carb substitutions for common foods. So I decided to stick with it post-surgery. I am two weeks out from my surgery and I am at the point where I can eat 800-1000 calories a day, where 50% is from protein, 40% fat, 10% Net Carb, and sodium between 1,500mg and 2,000mg. I track my Daily Food Intake in an Excel Spreadsheet, listing Calories, Total Fat, Protein, Net Carbs, Fiber, and Sodium of each. I also track my fluids, noting if the beverage has any sodium. I avoid sugars like the Plague, except when it comes to fruits. I will on occasion eat fresh strawberries, raspberries, or some honeydew melon. I don't feel the Keto diet is suitable for Post-op due to the high reliance on Fats. I like a more even distribution favoring protein over fat, but still keeping enough healthy fats in my system so entering Ketosis is a possibility. My carbs are always under 25g a day, most of the time between 15g and 20g. I was only in Ketosis once for a brief few days, and it was right after surgery. I check my ketone level regularly with those over the counter 'pee' strips. I like my method of tracking my nutrition manually instead of using an App or Website, although there is a lot more work looking up nutritional labels for everything I eat, or general nutritional information for those items without labels. The plus side of it is I am amassing a database of my frequently eaten food items so logging is becoming easier. I agree with the general consensus that 'Diet' is an ill-fitting word for what we are doing. I like the term 'Lifestyle Change' much better. A diet, to me, is finite in its duration. It has a beginning and an end. A Lifestyle Change goes on indefinitely. -

I am pre-op too. My surgery date is 9/26. I also bought the bottle carrier which holds my water bottle, phone, compact & lipstick. My husband says I am officially an old lady now (I'm 55)....lol. I am embracing the dorkiness 🤣 and love the hands-free option. I just tried it out on my trip to Washington and it was GREAT!! -

@Jonathan Carlson she said i am doing fine with my caloric intake. she did recommend more carbs as it will regulate the protein (she says) not sure what my muscle mass is to be honest. Dont have a baseline nor know how to measure. but will an increase in muscle mass cause the body to not loose weight for that lengthy period of time ? dont get me wrong i am all for very toned no loose skin body and if that is the case yippiiee!! @NCL04321 and @LindsayT I have scheduled an appointment with another Dietitian. Lets hear what they say. my other dietitian said to limit my fruit intake. ( I keep having tummy ache when i take things with some degree of sugar in it. the higher the amount the more painful) I take some veggies like spinach, kale, lettuce (okro not sure if it is a veggie) alergy to banana ( tummy hurts even before surgery) but i will be honest it is not part of my daily meal cept for peppers that is part of my daily protein meal. and i usually have proteins most> for carbs i take shirataki noodles and bulgur wheat mostly. Potatoes are once a month meal. i will be honest i dont have a vast variety to my meals cept for the protein which are lean meat, turkey, fish, lobster, kidneys, shrimps, prawns, seafood, chicken, eggs which is the predominant variety of meal i have. then have lettuce with them sometimes i eyeball my meals but i decided to weigh it and noticed in an entire day my meal is prob a total of 18oz spread across the day but take a lot of protein water to help me. I am hungry often but i cant seem to go more than that as it is mostly protein i eat and it fills me quite quickly. my idea of indulging is having So much rice i can throw up (hahahahhah) and maybe a coconut biscuit..... which i have thought i should indulge in yesterday and today. will look into a prebiotic it is healthy from what i gather. I have already gone past 2liters of liquid today and it is 14:14 here now. as i mentioned i workout often so take a lot of liquid more water than coffee or lactose free milk on the days i work out. the other 2-3 days i probably manage 1.8liters ( that is my 2 liter botte is not completely empty) @LindsayT yea my thyroids were checked and elevated parathyroid was discovered even though Vitamin D level and Calcium levels were normal. So i have been referred to an endocrin department -
I had my surgery January 18 this year and everything went great up until about the end of March where I just stopped losing. Like anything at all! My heaviest weight was 240 lbs before surgery, 229 lbs day of surgery. My weight at the end of March-beginning of April was 189lbs. Sounds great right? That was 51 lbs down total, 40 since surgery! The inches that I lost were even more impressive and both my surgeon and dietitian were happy about my progress. But here we are in September already, I’m almost 8 months post-op and guess what? My weight is 190 lbs average since then! It varies between 185-193 lbs and hasn’t shown any sign of changing. I’ve had several ‘extra’ appointments with both surgeon and dietitian and have followed ALL recommendations given with no changes. I’m SO frustrated and not sure what else to do. I mean…this can’t be it, can it? I didn’t have major surgery to just be where I’m at right now. My surgeon has mentioned that if my stall continues I may be a candidate for medical weight loss options like medications etc. and I’ve also had some recent testing to check things out. I’m now waiting on results from an upper GI series where at that time, the doctor doing the testing said he thinks he saw a hiatal hernia but wanted to look at everything slowed down on his other screens to be sure before doing his report. The thing that doesn’t make sense about that is my surgeon repaired a hiatal hernia I had for YEARS when he did my bypass surgery so I am really not sure what could be happening there! Does anyone have a similar situation and any success knocking your body the heck out of a very long stall? Please, PLEASE tell me all of your secrets! Quote Edit Reply to this topic...

Thank you. Everything went well. Surgery was at 7:30 and I was in my hospital room by 1:30. Sipping water as I can and dipped my spoon in the various protein drinks from room service. Gas pain was not too bad, thankfully, but I’ve been walking the hall as I can. I dozed off most of the day on and off. -

3 Months Post-Op: 50 lbs dropped! But, I am Weak
Arabesque replied to Deep6's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You may not be eating enough given you are male & going to the gym. Have a chat with your dietician & review what & how much you’re eating & your current activity. Are you hitting your protein & fluid goals? I wasn’t eating much at three months & get only being able to eat what you can physically eat. But I’m female, way shorter & certainly wasn’t very active when losing so it wasn’t as much of an issue for me. I agree with adding an electrolyte drink to your fluid routine. The extra boost of energy was a blessing on busy/active days. PS. Give lamb a try & see how you go. It’s more tender than pork which can be dry & then difficult to eat. Also chicken thigh, which is more moist, tender & flavourful than chicken breast, maybe easier to tolerate. I ate a lot of minced meat dishes (meatballs, savoury mince, bolognese with zucchini noodles, etc.) in the first months so give that a try too. And congrats on your weight loss! -
3 Months Post-Op: 50 lbs dropped! But, I am Weak
Deep6 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Today was the 3 month anniversary of my bypass/hiatal hernia repair. I've done ok on the calorie restricted diet--still can't eat certain meats (I've stayed away from steak which I love, haven't eaten lamb and even a moist pork chop is a little tough for me- instead, I'm eating. lot of fish). My portions are small-- -protein say three tablespoons, veggies, two tablespoons, mashed or sweet potato- 1/2 a small sized one. Today I weighed myself- I went from over 271 to 221 which is kind of crazy! (I am around 6 feet, used to be taller but I'm a geezer so I'm shrinking). Hooked up at a new gym that I can walk to from my house, so I will go more frequently and won't need to spend money on ride shares (I prefer not driving in town). I was shocked at how weak I was--It is going to take some time to strengthen and I'm being very cautious about torquing my gut given the surgery (even though the surgeon cleared me for weight lifting). I'm doing my supplements. I guess this is a good news/bad news thing- not that I live by the scale but I was amazed at how much I've lost so quickly. And a little disappointed in how weak I am. My wife said, "dude, you went through major surgery, take your time." She's probably right. There is no question that the surgery + pretty strict adherence to the post-op diet does work. Now I just have to rebuild my strength over time. -
Hey everyone, I just wanted to take a moment to share my experience and vent a bit about the difficulties I've been facing after my gastric bypass surgery. It's been tough, and I could really use some support and understanding right now. Firstly, one of the biggest challenges I've encountered is the loss of taste. It's incredibly disheartening to try different food and drink options, only to find that nothing tastes good anymore. I've experimented with various yogurts, protein powders, shakes, and even crystal light flavors, but unfortunately, the enjoyment I used to get from eating has vanished. Even something as simple as finishing a bottle of water has become a struggle for me. To add to this frustrating situation, I've been dealing with a persistent metallic taste in my mouth. This unpleasant sensation affects how everything tastes, making it even more difficult to find pleasure in eating or drinking. Despite my efforts to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing my teeth four times a day, the taste persists, and it's incredibly discouraging. On top of these physical challenges, my energy levels have plummeted, leaving me feeling depleted and drained. It's hard to stay positive and motivated when you're constantly battling fatigue. Unfortunately, this has taken a toll on my mental health as well, and I find myself struggling with depression. It's a heavy emotional burden to carry, and I often find myself crying myself to sleep at night. I apologize if this post sounds like a downer, but I really needed to vent and share my experience with people who might understand. If any of you have gone through a similar situation, I would greatly appreciate any advice or encouragement you can offer. And to those who are willing, please keep me in your prayers. The support means the world to me during this challenging time. Thank you for taking the time to read my post and for being there for me when I needed to let it all out. Together, we can get through the tough times and find strength in each other.

LindsayT replied to Ginnnnie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I can only imagine how frustrating this could be. What does your surgeon say? Is your dietitian well versed in post WLS eating? I would maybe seek a second opinion. My mind went straight to hormones, but if all is well... I can't remember your post, have you had your thyroid checked? All I know is to stick to the basics: meet your protein and fluid requirements, get in your veggie fiber, and exercise. What kind of carbs did you introduce? Maybe potatoes, fruit, and/or whole grain would be best, if you're not already. -

FORGIVE THE LENGTHY MESSAGE. NEED TO GIVE CONTEXT I am wondering if any one experienced this my starting weight was 139kg before surgery on the 15th of January 2023 on day of surgery it was 131kg 2 weeks post-op i was stalled for 8weeks which was not a bother to me at the time i healed quite quickly with no complications and was moved to solids within 3 weeks by the dietitian too. between January and April i lost some weight down to 111kg Since april i have not lost anything. I have gained and lost 3-4 kg since April till date which is September 6th 2023 I do everything many people say on every platform which had never been a challenge namely Monitor what i eat: I eat between 88 - 1200 calories I have more protein than anything eggs, lean meat, chicken, fish, shrimps carbs are mostly bulgur wheat. which i have sparingly 2ce a month. Plantain i have daily to balance my protein intake but not as much as protein. I prob have more grams of protein a day and that includes protein water. I work out 4-5 days a week for up to 1:30 - 2:00 hours each day In April i worked out more 4 days a week 2ce a day 2day time cardio 1:30 hours night time strength training. no weights heavier than 25kg i take my vitamins biotin and all recommended as well as powdered collagen Recent bloods shows everything within normal range. I am going into my 5th month and i am still 111kg Since April. My dietitian is numb on what is going on, the nurse recommended liquid collagen ( which makes no sense) and have said hormones.... but hormones cannot affect this 5months straight. I did bloods to check my thyroids and it showed elevated parathyroid (no idea what that means)..... not gotten an explanation as my vitamin levels and calcium levels are normal my nails are very soft and brittle and my hair falls like the weather ( only blessed to have a full head of hair but cant say it is helpful soon) No ...... the clothes i wore in April are still the same September. measurements are the same..... the only win i am getting from this is that my knee and ankle dont hurt as much when i workout. i dont burn out as i used to and i work out more than i used to before which was walking up to 50k-70ksteps a day. I have never been one who drank alcohol and havent started post surgery. I have never been one who ate junk food like crisps, tacos, burgers. I have not been diagnosed diabetic nor with PCOS i noticed when i had no carbs in my diet i lost fast but when i introduced carbs as suggested by the dietitian everything came on hold I NEED SOME SIGN THAT I AM NOT IN AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE OR A LONG DREAM!!! Cos it feels pointless having done the surgery not to be an effective tool Anyone in a similar predicament before -

So I do not have that insurance, but what I could find was that they do cover a variety of options here is a link. https://secure.compliance360.com/Common/ViewUploadedFile.aspx?PD=PbRt%2bA78MS7DkR7t3eswzx4PmIfqMh5Gvr16ARj2%2bYR%2fbM3Br19IKOL7BmMQvCh%2bObdTwt55hbmBERTk8pGaqPegW8FFx95O2WGDad%2fP32wtK%2fLy3eAuPemfjKVE4PNzPcJl4Diuz13mj3pVztiXT1jOk1QXXnxshbN53Oyornctpycy8rUdp6PO01yKHuAyjToezDSmtv7QFcCDCBNlPkza0BIOxIDU2F3sAcfC9iWbTygtlPuPosN%2b0KsA3MMUlStY4KrcPnrna%2fEhFWHpkpUaKhgyCBBOFWIbN6dlv9A%3d -
What exactly are your program guidelines? Do you meet with a dietician as part of your program? Can you reach out for some additional assistance? I know for my program, I am in the range of at least 70-80g of protein and soon enough 80-100g. There is no specific guide to carbs and fats allotment, only that protein is the priority and to limit carbs and fats. More so complex carbs and healthy fats. Sugar free as much as possible. It can feel weird at first, but it gets better with time. I mostly stick to a protein and a veg. I do happen to eat burgers with no bun. I can only really manage a whole chicken patty, but only half a turkey burger or beef burger. If i feel like I want to have more traditional way of eating it, I'll put the half on a Mission Carb Balance Whole Wheat street taco tortilla. I do use sugar free bbq sauce, maybe some pickle slices and tomatoes with a reduced fat slice of cheese. It's all I can manage and I am satisfied. I also make cottage cheese bowls - taco bowls are my fave. About 3oz of ground turkey or chicken taco meat and a couple tablespoons of cottage cheese. Toppings as you like - i can do a couple cherry tomatoes, some shredded lettuce, a sprinkle of light cheese and a little salsa. Sometimes I can eat it all, sometimes I have some left which I may or may not be able to eat a little later. I would also say, instead of thinking of doing all the work for just 3ozs, meal prep. Make several portions to have on hand. Freeze extras if you tire easily. One pound of ground meat can easily last me a week's worth of meals, but I freeze to not waste if i don't realistically think I can eat any one thing. (I'm only cooking for myself a majority of the time). I also follow on IG your.onderland which provides a lot of helpful reminders, tips and recipes for the bariatric journey. Hope this helps.

August 2023 Surgery Buddies!
PennyinAL replied to kayhay0714's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not sure what you mean by gross ingredients? I mostly went with broths and some cream soups in the 3rd week of clear liquids, I'd mix one can broth to one can cream soup. My fourth week sent me into soft foods which was mostly eggs, ground sausage or beef and some fish. Week 5 I moved into chicken. Chicken being so very dry it seems harder to digest than anything else, ground beef was so much easier. I can't much do the protein shakes, the only way I've been able to choke them down is to literally put in a blender with some extra protein powder & yogurt and ice and make a smoothie/milkshake thing and top with keto whipped cream. I use it more as a dessert bc I can't drink all that sweet stuff in the early morning. Not much of a breakfast person but since this surgery I wake up famished but I guess 3-4 oz only takes so long to digest and if I eat at 7-9 pm by the time I get up at 9-10 am it has been a long time. I got the Walgreen's extra protein shakes, small town, limited choices around here. -
What was your “Moment” ?
Pines replied to GrannyMaggie's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have been large all my life, but always felt healthy and mostly able to do what I wanted. I gained about 40 pounds during Covid and after struggling to get it off and no longer feeling healthy, my doctor recommended seeing an endocrinologist who recommended WLS. I was not interested, at all, so decided to try Ozempic. I was on it for a year, lost my Covid weight and a bit more, and was really surprised how it changed my cravings and interest in food. After my health insurance stopped covering Ozempic, I started researching other options and realized that WLS would give me some of the same effects I appreciated from the medication. I am on a long journey though because my health insurance requires six months of nutrition counseling and that ends in a work window when I can't take time off, so I'm hoping for a March 2024 surgery date. It's giving me plenty of time to plan, research and prepare! 🙂 -
From what I understand, weight loss post revision is always slower than the rate at which you lost with your original surgery. Plus you’re losing from a lower weight (if I read correctly) so that will result in a slower rate. What does your team say? Are they concerned? When losing I only had one snack a day: a high protein yoghurt or yoghurt drink, or I had some fresh fruit. Check with your dietician for what’s best for you & your needs. I never exercised but I lost all my weight & more. Exercising only contributes to about 10% of the weight you have to lose. So in your case if you want to lose those 45lbs, exercising will only result in about 4.5lbs. Of course many other benefits to exercising especially for your family history. Maybe start with walking. You don’t have to go to a gym. All I do now is stretching & use resistance bands. Do about 4 sessions of 5-10 minutes of various activities. Mainly for my back & to remain limber. All the best.

Anyone else get sick from the protein shakes for the pre-op diet?
CNoelle89 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m having surgery in October but have been trying all different brands ahead of time to see which I like best. So far, I like the taste of Boost & Premier the best but shortly after drinking either of them, I get a bad stomach ache and have to run to the bathroom. I suspect that this is due a sensitivity I have to artificial sugars. The same thing happens if I try to eat sugar free jello or anything like that. I’m getting very nervous because I don’t want to be sick for 2 weeks and my dietician doesn’t have much of a solution for me. She told me to keep trying brands until one doesn’t make me sick but I have the same issue with Ensure and Glucerna. Anyone have a similar experience? -

New here and just had surgery
Chel1 replied to Anc85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@PrincessDes Boost Max & Premier Protein both have 30 g of protein per serving. This has been my life saver and many iothers to assist meeting protein goals. One good thing is that it is also 11 oz which per my nutritionist it counts as my fluid intake too. Unjury has a lot of flavors to mix in with your liquids with 20g protein per scoop. My go to is the chicken flavor and the no flavor. The no flavor ones I used in jello etc the chicken in soups mix in with any ground meats when you get to that stage. A lot of creative ways. -
4 Days Post Op - Revision Update
Chel1 replied to Chel1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
@RTL1234 I did not have swelling like this with the sleeve and I am assuming since the hernia repair as well is the reason for more incisions. On the positive side yesterday when I got on the scale I lost 5 of the 7lbs from surgery (fluids, air, swollen, etc). I know it's not actual weight. We will see how things go this week. Last night was the worse with itching! I found some Zyrtec dissolvable tabs in my cabinet which helped a lot! When I read up on it - it said it's a better choice than benadryl since the effects last longer (fingers crossed). Liquids - On for two weeks post op until my follow up appointment next week on the 12th. I will be completing my blood thinning ejections then as well. After I'll be on puree for 2 wks then soft foods for another 2 wks. I'll be glad to move forward just because I can add more variety to the previous weeks. This is definitely helping me re-familiarize myself with getting the right amount of protein and fluids in daily. I was told to wait to start my vitamins 1-2 wks after, I'll start those this week. I purchased the ones from Bariatric Pal (capsules), I can open them and mix the powder in when I make my protein shake. Yes! I did find a way to mix it up for this last week of fluids! Today will be cream of bacon made the same way I did my soup yesterday. Exciting right? LOL
