  1. Hello I know everyone is different, but I would really appreciate any comments as to when you finally stopped losing weight after your surgery? I am nearly 8 months post gastric bypass, but have at least another 2st 8lbs to lose before I hit my goal (my goal is to be outside of the obese category for my BMI). Whilst I would love to lose more than this, as long as I lose another 2st 8lbs I will be happy as my reason for undergoing the surgery (other than for my own health) is because I want to undergo IVF. The further out of my surgery I get the more I am consciously limiting my calories and food, because I am just so scared of the weight loss stopping and I am finding it a struggle to shift 1lb a week. Which is making me worry that soon my weight loss will stop. I would say I am eating maximum of 800 - 1,000 calories a day. Any info would be much appreciated.
  2. Hello and welcome to the forum. This sounds like it could be dumping syndrome or foamies, I get them mixed up. It usually happens when we eat sugary, rich or fatty foods or just something that does not agree. I have just eaten too much mango and having a full out sweat session. I can not drink and am really thirsty. I will try a antacid lozenge and if that doesn't work I will make myself vomit.
  3. I came here last year posting about my frustrations. I'm now 222 pounds. Strictest diet of my life and the highest level of exercise I've ever done in the last two months and I have lost no weight at all. I was 150 a decade ago and even then I was struggling To maintain it. By the age of of 24 (2014) I had mysteriously gained 20 pounds in one year andbever since then I've just been gaining. Gaining, gaining. Going from a size 8 to now over a size 20. It's been unbelievable. I was tested for PCOS but nothing came back. Had cystic acne and grew a beard a few years ago but every test comes back normal. They haven't seen anything like this before. I have no food addiction. I have a small appetite personally but no one believes me when I tell them this. My daily breakfast just consists of a banana and nuts most days and I eat healthy lunches and nutritionally rich dinners. Yesterday I made myself a kale salad with mandarin oranges and tuna -- that's all I had for supper. Exactly what is it going to take for me to get WLS? I was refused Two years ago but them I was 209. I'm 5'7 and nearly 34. I can't keep gaining more weight. My insulin is now abnormal and doctors think I'm pre diabetic. I have not done anything wrong. I joined a gym in March, I eat extremely carefully. What else is there left to do but surgery? I'm in canada but am willing to travel to Mexico if necessary.

    Hi Mrs. Richards, I agree with you. It is difficult to do both the protein and water goals in the same 24 hours. I have to say I’m struggling with the foods we can eat. My surgery was 8/28. I have very bad gas all the time. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong. please share any suggestions.

    Don't you hate when your own words come back to get you?? LOL But I aim to take your advice and stay away from those foods as much as possible, as I have seen that creeping back into them really slows/stops people's weight loss or leads to regain. Just because you can eat a thing, doesn't mean you should I suppose... When I had to go gluten free for about 5 years I found that focusing on what I COULD have and what would nourish me was much wiser than focusing on all that I could NOT have. It became a game to see what new, interesting thing I could try to expand my palette. I discovered a lot of things that I wouldn't have ever tried in my old way of eating. Like charcuterie boards! OMG I love those things, so many little bits of things to try. I found that a few bites of a few things was much more satisfying than a large volume of one thing. I think remembering that post surgery will help a lot...

    Protein help!

    Things have changed a whole lot since my surgery in 2010! The diet plan I had to follow was one Ensure Protein [and I am know it was not the 30gr/carton variety] and water. That was it. On the hour, 2 oz of protein then 2 oz of water every 15 minutes. I even bought a set of eight pretty 2 oz shot glasses that my husband would use for my meals. At the top of the hour, he brought me one with protein and three with water. Start over at the top of the hour and continue until you went to bed. Slider foods, those that are pureed like mashed potatoes, canned refried beans, tuna with mayo, hot cereals, etc were for weeks 4-6 back then. Of course every practice has their own requirements and so much has changed. To up your protein, add some to your cereals or your yogurt. They make flavorless proteins. Find the protein that you can tolerate. Also, you can look into the clear liquid proteins that are out there. Many companies make them. Stalls are your body's way of trying to figure out just what you are trying to do to it. It naturally does not want you to starve to death so it will hold onto those pounds for as long as it can. Then, you will suddenly lose two pounds overnight, lose for a while and then begin another stall. This is the first of many stalls - just keep doing what you are supposed to be doing and don't let that stall get to you. Yes, that is hard, the "not letting it get to you" part. Remember that your surgery is just another tool in your toolbox and not a magic bullet. For the constipation, which is really common after this surgery because of the high protein intake, I would add Miralax to your water or any liquid or hot cereal. One capful mixed in 8 oz of water, for example. You won't know it is there. I now mix one capful of Miralax with my morning decaf coffee. You could also add stool softener as well. If after adding those, and not getting relief, absolutely speak with your surgeon. There are prescription meds out there that can help.

    Oddly enough, I find it easier to eat grains than protein. There are low-carb cereals available on the internet, as well as some health foods supermarkets. There are also recipes for low-carb cereal. Don’t be afraid to try it.

    Your title may be laugh too. Thought you were going to talk about the awful constipation &/or diarrhoea. LOL! Corn is one of those foods that can be difficult to digest & therefore pass. It can cause gas & bloating too - it’s the cellulose in it. It is also high in natural sugars (especially sweet corn) so it’s often not included in some diets like keto & in many of our plans for a while. Yes, the mayo, cheese or even the chilli could be causing your body to go nope not for us too. Not sure how far a long you are but maybe give it a break for a while & then see how you go. If you aren’t that far out, your tummy may still be a little fussy & sensitive.

    Surgery was 8/25 I’ve lost 34.4lbs - and last week finally got to see a 1 on the scale for the first number instead of a 2! Weighing in at 198.0 exactly! I’m either doing good on my water, or good on my protein - it’s really a struggle for me to do both in the same day. Unfortunately personal issues have come up and I haven’t been as active as I’ve wanted to be, but hope that changes in the next week or so. It’s cooling down in Florida, too, so hopefully I can get outside more! I am scared to try new foods - I’ve done relatively well, but the thought of adding grains in, or anything not protein freaks me out. I know it won’t derail me, but I feel like it’s a slippery slope and I would hate to slide backwards at all - would feel like such a failure.

    Hello everyone, my weight loss is steady, down 52lbs. I’m also back to coffee. No food intolerance, ( iceberg lettuce gave me gas ) walking 1.5 miles every morning. Wife and family are supportive. Mainly eating salads and chicken. Good work everyone. You got this!

My first one at the clinic (I had 12 prior as an insurance requirement) was just myself and the Dietician he asked me how I was currently eating, and told me he was glad my insurance required 12 prior visits with a dietician before getting to him, then he went over what eating after surgery would be like, showed me a portion size shot glass. Told me about vitamins, and recommended I try different kinds of protein shakes, so I would know what I liked when I got to the 2-week full liquid pre-op. He explained the order to eat my foods in, and to try and get a little of each, after the healing period, during the healing period he said it was more important to focus on protein. lasted about an hour My second visit was virtual, went over the full liquid pre-op diet and was given my start date. My clinic gives you a book on your very first visit that has all of the information, so I was reminded what page the 2-week full liquid pre-op diet was on. lasted about 30 min My third visit was virtual and in a group, we again went over the 2-week full liquid pre-op and over the 2-week post-op at which point there is an in-person visit, where we are evaluated and will be told how to proceed next with our diet. Again we were told what pages to refer in our book. lasted 1.5 hours
  14. im 5 years post. at this point i eat what i feel for, when i feel for it. i don't avoid anything except large amounts of sugar in one sitting (or on an empty stomach cuz im a dumper) everything else is fair game. yes i eat chips and chocolate and hot dogs (with buns!) and all sorts of deep fried stuff and drink alcohol along with my salads and roasted veggies and sashimi and grilled chicken breasts. normally (not right now cuz im super sick), i eat about 1800-ish cals a day without gaining or losing any unintended weight, and can consume roughly 1 cup-ish of food "material" in volume in one sitting. more if its salad, less if its dense meat or fluffy bread. give me a couple hours and i can down another cup of food. so long as my cals stay around 1800 a day, it doesn't matter whats its made up of...at least from a weight gain/loss perspective. from a health-wise perspective, well that is likely another story...cuz im sure 1800 cals of chicken breast is better for my body than 1800 cals of buttered popcorn. so far so good as my last labs (this time last year) were a-ok. we'll see what this years labs say when i get them done at end of month. i realize i haven't really answered either of ur questions. for the latter, i can't really comment, but for the former, below is a screenshot of what i ate when i was 8 months post op (trusty ol MFP!) note i had already reached goal and was in the process of upping my calories to settle into maintenance at this time. it took me another 2-3 months and another 10+ lbs lost before i figured out what my maintenance calories were. (sorry this was so long!)

    same. i've weighed myself every morning for the past 5 years (when i have access to a scale...sometimes i don't when im on vacay). and i still track what i eat daily (granted not as meticulously as before...i eyeball alot now vs busting out the scale and measuring cups every time. and i often use pre-set items in MFP vs listing out individual ingredients for foods now) its not for everyone, but it works for me as well. i credit this MO (along with regular-enough exercise) with how i have stayed below goal weight this entire time. Aside: granted im actually waay below goal weight at the moment due to a combination of quitting smoking, going on vacation and then currently being sick as a dog; but i know this is temporary. 🤞🏼

    if comparing pre-wls me vs post-wls me, today, (5 yrs post) im not sure if im more or less "hungry", because looking back, im convinced i wasn't actually as hungry as i said i was back then, i think i just wanted to eat. lots. i think i enjoyed or chased that "stuffed" feeling? i dunno. now, i HATE that stuffed feeling. so yeah, i do get hungry still, but i tend to not overfeed that hunger cuz i dont want to feel the icks. i do remember feeling ravenously hungry before. i haven't felt that since. however, if we are comparing 1st year post op me vs todays 5-yrs post op me, im definitely hungrier now that those first few months cuz i had food aversion for a while.

    I've always had this issue with corn. I expect it'll be the same post surgery. I think each of us has food that our bodies in particular don't digest well for whatever reason...
  18. Mine was a class with other people. Took about 90 minutes, went over pre-op diet, post surgery food stages, and long term diet. It was easygoing. The dietician asked if any of us felt we needed individualized help with diet planning and a few people asked for private sessions but I didn't. I am pretty knowledgeable about nutrition and understand the stages and such. I have another session right before surgery (if they ever get it scheduled) to go over the first few weeks of the diet. And then I have another class before we transition to soft foods... It seems this practice prefers classes for most of their nutrition info. Though I have the dietitian's email if I have any questions or need a private session, so that's nice. I have found most dietitians/nutritionists to be pretty business-like and a little abrupt in their manner, so your experience sounds pretty normal.
  19. I keep wondering why I always go back to foods that my body can't have. For example corn. I swear elote (mexican) is stuck on my mind. I can't find the authentic version and my butt is paying the price. I thought corn was okay for our system. Any suggestions? Thanks

    May 2023 surgeries

    Hello, still no real answers. I went today and had my TAC/Central removed, I am going to try and just fend for myself with nutrition and hydration.. ( i know it will be a fail, I still cant get in even 600 cals with real food, but I will try. So we will see. Still haven't had much for weight loss with being on TPN and Iv fluid. So hopefully that will start to happen. Happy to her you are doing so well.. Keep up the great job!

  25. this scares me but what scares me more is being so overweight never being able to there for my kids for anything. I have lost 100lbs gained it back, lost 40lbs gained it back, I have a very unhealthy relationship with food and self image. Now I am turning to surgery because I feel as tho is my last option to get my life under control. I am aware of the habits that I have will need to stop, the amount of food I eat needs to stop, the alcohol consumption will need to reduce. I am willing to this because this will help me in the long run. I am so sorry your going through this and this does make me more nervous about undergoing this surgery
