Hi all my name is Tam, I'm 34 and my gastric bypass surgery is booked for the 23 Jan.... I'm excited but very nervous and scared about the what ifs etc.... I know I need this to be 100% happy with myself but I don't have very much support just a family member.... I kinda stressed myself out reading all the side effects of the surgery and almost want to cancel it...... I'd be so greatful to have a buddy or mentor or both... I'm from Australia but anywhere in the world would be fine... Just be good to have someone ease my mind Thanks in advance ☺

Can anything be done after gastric bypass
deannaculp posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Do any of you know if anything can be done after gastric bypass? I had gastric 10yrs ago and within the last year have put the weight back on after my grandma died. -
Hi everyone, I was sleeved November 2011, after having my first child 2 years ago I gained all my weight back. I was wondering if anyone has been sleeved twice? I'm contemplating the idea, but of course I will have to talk to my Dr about it. I've tried the 5 day pouch test and didn't work for me. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I was wondering if any of you who have been banded could tell me how soon afterwards you went back to work? I'm going to be banded late in November and asked at work today to book the day off - its a Friday so I'm thinking I can return to work on the Monday but now I'm wondering if I should have asked for Monday off as well. How did it work for any of you - and how did you handle the diet restrcitions the first few weeks at work? I'm still not comfortable telling ANYONE about it. Thanks!

Lap band revision before big weight gain
Matt Z replied to Snowgator's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was revised from Band to Bypass. Something to think about, if you've got GERD or other acid issues... the Sleeve is *NOT* going to be the option you want to go with. -
Shirley here, retired from Veterans Affairs. I had a stroke 2011 for which the total bill was over $27,000. My cost was only a few hundred, mostly for specialists fees. I do not remember any specific charge for drugs used during surgery. In November 2012, I had a partial knee replacement. The bill was over $40,000 for which again I only paid a few hundred. In February this year, I had some spinal reconstruction, for over %80,000 and once AGAIN, I only paid a few hundred. BCBS Federal is the most awesome insurance coverage I have ever had. So even if your bill itself is some crazy number, your out of pocket shouldn't be so bad.

My niece's sister-in-law had bypass surgery. She was 500+ lbs and the doctor required that she lose 75lbs before he would operate. But he did make it easier for her to do so, by putting her on a supervised liquid diet. She dropped the weight in record time too.

One Week Ago Today & So far So Good
miss_malis posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hey everyone I just wanted to share that I had the gastric bypass one week ago today and so far so good! I think the preop diet really helped me to prepare for this. The surgery went very well and I didn't need much pain meds in the hospital. I made myself get up and walk and was released the next morning. I had bloating and gas as expected but not too bad. I really want to thank the Methodist Hospital Bariatric Program (Sacramento, CA) and my surgeon Ruby Gatschet for such a smooth process. I referred to my postop eating booklet once I got home and have lost 4lbs so far. I am looking forward to progressing in the booklet and changing my life to better my health. -
Where is the strangest place/person you discussed your lapband?
NJChick replied to maryb's topic in The Lounge
Not a strange place but the other day I went out for dinner with a gastric bypass friend. It was a little bar & grill and we were the only ones there (until 8 pm when the local's came in) so the cook/owner came out to see if everything was okay. We said the food was yummy, which it was but there was so much left on our plates that the cook kinda went "eh" So we both explained that we had stomach surgery and couldn't eat it all....she was like ohhhhhhhhhhhh and you saw a sign of relief in her face LOL, guess she felt we didn't like the food. It make me feel awkward but people have been pretty good about it. I don't tell anyone about my surgery but in a case like that, I felt bad and had to tell the cook LOL. -
My psychiatrist strongly discouraged me from bypass due to drug malabsorption issues. So now I'm leaning towards VSG. I have GERD which is fairly well controlled by taking a PPI and an acid reducer. Is there any way to predict if the sleeve will make my GERD unmanageable? I guess now my choices are sleeve or no surgery at all, and frankly for other health reasons, and being 110 lbs overweight, I need to have surgery!! Thanks! Submitted to Aetna Ins for Revision Surgery
Emilee68 replied to PSUCookie's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi there! I am waiting to hear from Aetna on my sleeve to bypass revision. I called today and they said it's in review as of the 26th. Said it could take 7-10 days. Just curious...were you approved? How long did it take to hear back for a final decision? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using the BariatricPal App -
Considering the sleeve, suggestions?
smg replied to rgme1983's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a little over a month post-op (sleeve) and I agree with some of the above comments I no longer crave most of the foods I craved before surgery. I am very happy that I decided on the sleeve as it was the best choice for me. About which you should go with I would say it has to be a choice made ultimately by you with input and recommendations by your surgeon. I will say that if you intend on making your decision based solely or partially on which one you can eat "bad" foods easier on, you will be setting yourself up to fail before you even begin. Regardless of the surgery, you need to commit to lifestyle changes that include (perhaps most importantly) making better food choices than what you've done that's led you to where you are. Something as sugary as sweet tea is most likely a no-no regardless of the surgery you choose, especially since it's a liquid. With the sleeve, liquids drain through your new baby stomach very fast and if it's full of sugar, it's going to wreak havoc on your duodenum and blood-sugar levels. You may even experience symptoms equivalent to that of a bypass patients "dumping syndrome". It's difficult to think about giving up things that have been so much a part of our lives for so long, but it's the commitment you have to make in order to be successful long-term. Think of this as a reboot, and try to purge all of that bad stuff from memory. A few weeks or a month without it, and you most likely won't even miss it. The other thing to consider is that your tastes may change after surgery. Mine certainly did. Things that I ate or drank before surgery that never stood out to me as "too salty" or "too sweet" now come across as so salty and/or sweet that I have absolutely no interest in them. Best of luck to you whichever choice you make! -
Bypass w/ minor issues
kassandrafernandez@ymail.com posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hey everyone, I had my surgery on 12/15/16 & I am having a very hard time with drinking water and experiencing a lot of dry heaving. I went to the hospital last night they said everything looked normal no strictures. Also I'm having a real hard time catching my breath, I catch myself becoming very much out of breath with small things I do. Like dressing myself. I need help figuring this out Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
My band being removed. I'm trying to decide.. Sleeve or Bypass?
cinward2001 replied to pickel1972's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was told by my surgeon that IF you were successful with the band, the sleeve will work for you, too. But if you tend to want to eat a lot of sweets and things that were NOT stopped by the band, then maybe bypass would be better (for the dumping and the fact that you won't absorb everything you eat). I chose the sleeve because I did get to my goal weight with the sleeve. Plus, I'd like to minimize changes to my "innards" as much as possible. I'm already minus a gall bladder, appendix, and now part of my stomach! LOL! -
Gastroparesis and Bariatric Surgery
gobeit posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I got the results from my EGD and some additional testing they did as a result (Gastric Emptying) and I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis though I'm not 'presenting' with the more severe symptoms... (Yet?) I was originally slated for the sleeve. My doctor said he is still leaning towards the sleeve but it's important that I understand that if the portion of my stomach that is left is not functioning properly I would have to then have the sleeve converted to a bypass, probably within weeks of the initial surgery. Scared. Worried. Feeling like my shot at a real life change just got really complicated if not shut down... Anyone else hit this particular hurdle? -
Hello there, Longtime lurker, first time poster here!🖐️ I had my stomach stapled (vbg) in 2003. Went from 320 lbs to 189, I don't remember in how long. But I was never comfortable eating, threw up most of the time(due to in part no education pre-op whatsoever back then, but also as it turns out a stricture). could not tolerate meats of any kind and soon after realizing how easy it was for me to tolerate "sliders", I started gaining weight. So over 15 years I gained back up to 276 lbs. I started being ok with myself, started buying cute clothes( well as much as I could) and stopped dieting. Over the years I developed fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis, osteoarthritis and a few other choice chronic conditions, so I decided it's time for me to get serious about my health(without dieting) and my biggest concern at the time was the ridiculous acid reflux, that would sometimes wake me up by rushing into my nose!! And I had started developing more severe symptoms that resembled gastritis . Anyways, a year ago I started seeing a gastroenterologist, who after further exploration discovered the stricture and budding gastritis. He told me right then that the position of my stricture is not going to be helped by dilatation, and my only way is a revision. Of course, 1- I did not think insurance would pay for it, so out of the question. 2- I did not want to have any more "elective" surgeries. 3- I had just started being ok with myself and advocating for big people, remember? So, I chose to do a dilatation and my doctor was willing to try. Did NOT work! Big surprise! My doctor made an appointment with a revision bariatric surgeon, without consulting me. Gotta love how things work out! Anyways, long story short...er😉, here I am jumping through insurance hoops to get approved for a revision to rny bypass. My question is, in people's experience, did the fibro pain get any better after weight loss? Thanks for bearing with me through the long post and thank you, all for the vast wealth of information on this website!

regaining and undoing their surgery
Recidivist replied to dal101's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I will add that my surgeon said that stretching the pouch after bypass is nearly impossible to do. You can, however, eat significantly more over time than you can during the first year, and as others have said, you can eat quite a bit of the wrong things once you are in maintenance. The surgery is a tool to lose weight, but it's a matter of discipline to shift to a healthy lifestyle and keep the weight off. -
Vegetarian Getting Gastic Sleeve
jennysayscheese replied to JenniferP1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am wondering.g the same! So far I haven't had any issues. Doc said to rely on dairy and beans, plus soy products, which was what I did before gastric bypass so no issues. I wish there was more info sites, recipes, etc out on the net, though. -
Are there any banded (or soon to be banded) quilters?
lindseyann2u replied to fluffyinks's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I've sewn for a long time -- in fact I have a BS in Home Ec. I started quilting in about 2000. I'm waiting for a surgery date. I've been getting through all the tests and pre-op stuff, and it's taken months. My date should be in late October, or early November, but I have to prove I've lost the 15 pounds first. I've got 13 down my first week of dieting, and two to go, but no weight loss this week. Sticking with it though. Boy, you have less than two weeks before the big day. Good luck! I think it's going to be life-changing, don't you? -
Setting HEALTHY & REALISTIC goals
Matt Z replied to AshMarie794's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Personally, I had several. I had some easy, more difficult, almost absurd, and dream. When I was 370, my goals were, 300 for the "easy", 275 for the "more difficult", 250 for the "almost absurd" and 200 for the "Dream". This was when I had the lapband installed. I hit 300. Then I couldn't go any farther, floated up and down from 300 - 320. The revision to the bypass helped me clear all the rest of my goals and now I'm a stones throw from 200. So, the take away, don't be afraid to dream big, just make sure you understand that dream goals might never happen. Set yourself a few goals, that way when you start ticking them off, you won't be frustrated trying to get to JUST that one, crazy, dream goal. And don't forget to celebrate each and every victory with the same level that you would beat yourself up for each failure, it's only fair to be equal! -
My gastric bypass was done Sept5, 2013. I'm seeing what others have lost around the same time. Jan 5 will be 4 months for me. I'm down 57lbs. I'm happy for the loss I just assumed it would be more by now but maybe not. Either way I'm happy for my decision. How's everyone else doing?! I wish everyone a fantastic new year with amazing results!! ????????

So I haven't been on here for a while but had to share with others my experiences with the gastric sleeve. I had my surgery on April 12, 2016 the first 6-8 weeks it was going great some vomiting here and there while getting used to the new ways of life. Then the now and then became more and more frequent til I was vomiting daily. I this was not right so I had a long talk with the doctor he told me he was thinking i had a kink in the sleeve and sent me to a gastroenterologist. This doctor was sure it was a kink and scheduled me for a Esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD on August 12, 2016. The EGD went well for about 2 weeks than slowly I started vomiting again more and more, back to the doctor then to get another EGD on October 20, 2016. This time it seemed to do the job by the end of January I was doing good than the beginning of February the vomiting started again back to the doctor and April 25, 2017 EGD #3. I knew it linked again by may but I was sick of it so I decided to stick it out, BAD MOVE on July 27, 2017 I was rushed to the emergency room with Severe dehydration because I couldn't keep anything even ice down. July 29,2017 EGD #4. After that one I could tell it wasn't going to be long be i was back there and i was right November 8, 2017 I went in for EGD #5. After that last one it was a 100% different feeling not for the good but I pushed through and waited it out. I went in for my 2 year post OP appointment on April 10, 2018 (2 days before my 2 year) and doc was not happy to hear I am scheduled for my 6th EGD on May 10, 2018 so after looking at my labs and my upper GI from January I was told that my body is basically like rejecting my sleeve and my new lifestyle I have to live. So now i am waiting for a call from the doctor to start my new journey of having a gastric bypass done on my sleeve (revision) before I could think of what I should say I started crying and repeating "Why on earth did I do this to myself. I regret ever having this damn surgery". She calmed me as much as she could and now I'm waiting for this all to begin. When I was 18 months post OP my OBGYN gave me the go ahead to try for a baby. We decided to wait a little longer because he was working out of state. Now that he's back and we want to start a family I am told that I can't for another couple years. My life is crumbling and I am so disappointed that I can't start the family my boyfriend wants I'm even considering telling him to leave me and find someone that isn't a broken mess.

Hi everyone! I am approximately 9 weeks pregnant and feel super bloated and have already gained a few pounds and it is making me extremely nervous.. I had wanted to talk to my surgeon about my constant stall no matter what I was doing and my terrible reflux to get revision surgery prior to me getting pregnant.. now, I am not due until November, and was wondering how long after I give birth should I approach the revision? I am not going to breast feed due to my line of work and would like to have the revision done while I’m on maternity leave so I don’t have to take additional time off from work. Anyone do this or have any pointers? I’m super stressed about the weight gain :(

If you already have GERD, then I'd say, no, do not have the sleeve, as there is a potential to make GERD worse with the sleve. Bypass can cure GERD, but I do not think you are a candidate for bypass either, with so little to lose. Maybe try a medically supervised diet and therapy...? Has WLS destroyed your marriage/relationship?
sophrosyne replied to sophrosyne's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It's good to hear that relationships can survive. I worry, because sometimes I catch myself thinking things like "after I lose weight, he'll have to be nice to me" and I wonder what'll happen if he isn't! LOL! I had a friend who had the bypass, and she lost a LOT of weight. She also started an affair with a married man and left her husband. So, it got me wondering...
