Post-op discomfort (poking sensation) and soft food phase
Arabesque replied to Lisa1313's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@ChunkCat is right. Eggs can be difficult for some. Also on purée try to keep your food still pretty runny - like at the very least ‘gloop’ of your spoon. You may need to make yours even runnier by adding additional stock, gravy, water, milk, etc. And yes, while healing you can have weird muscle spasms & strains. Remember your tummy is a muscle & it has to heal from being cut. Lots of nerves also were cut during your surgery & other abdominal organs are moved about while they operate too. So the spasms & other weird feelings are understandable. Someone posted recently that they’re surgeon told them it can take 8 weeks or more you heal from a sleeve. So you may continue to have these spasms & twinges for a while yet. But do check with your surgeon to be sure - better safe than sorry. -
5 months post op and can’t eat

Obviously, I'm not a medical professional so take anything I say with a grain of salt. Tbh, during this weight loss phase, I would try to stay focused on losing weight. Continue to monitor your eating challenges, but there will be time to sort that out after you've lost the weight. As long as you're getting sufficient nutrition and calories, you'll be fine for now. Do your best to meet the protein goal, but if you fall short, it's not the end of the world. Listen to your body, and feed it what it can handle. I'm 19 mo post-op, and even now, solid foods can be a challenge. I generally still eat a soft(ish) diet. It works for me. Obviously, if you are continually getting sick, feel bad, and/or are unable to eat enough to meet your needs, that's an urgent problem. But if you can handle it, give it time and stay focused. -
Hello. I had my sleeve gastrectomy on June 13. I lost 30 pounds prior to surgery and have since lost another 72 for a total of 102 pounds. I am ecstatic except I can barely eat anything. Initially, I figured my progress was just slow, so I didn’t rush the stages. Then it was discovered I had a stricture as I was throwing up any solid food. I’ve since had two endoscopy procedures, but things don’t seem much better. I am mostly on a soft diet as a lot of solid food, even if eaten in very small quantities and chewed very well, will cause me to throw up. Many foods cause diarrhea. In fact, I’ve had chronic diarrhea this entire time. My doctor says to wait another month before a third endoscopy. I am taking Imodium a couple of times a week to curb the diarrhea because it’s getting to be extremely irritating. I am barely eating because I can hardly tolerate anything, and I am having a very difficult time meeting my protein goal. Protein shakes cause extreme fullness and diarrhea and sometimes vomiting, so those are out. I do drink protein shots which go down well, and I pretty much live on fresh mozzarella cheese and yogurt. Even the thought of a lot of foods is a turn off because they aren’t appealing and make me gag or I’m afraid of how I’ll react and psych myself out. I am at a loss as to what to eat. Luckily, I am getting my water in, 64+ ounces per day, and I do eat Pedialyte popsicles to help with electrolyte loss which my providers are concerned about. I’ve researched and researched, but I’m finding nothing. Has anyone had this issue? How did you solve it?

Post-op discomfort (poking sensation) and soft food phase
ChunkCat replied to Lisa1313's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Egg is a food that not everyone does well with. So maybe skip it for a while? Have you tried anything else like meatballs cooked in a sauce, nice and tender? It takes a while to adjust to each food stage and every body has its own timing. I'd trust yours, hold off on eggs, and try something else in the soft food category like cheese or deli lunch meat. There is nothing wrong with keeping to a base of purees until you've tried enough soft foods to compose meals. Many people just try one new thing a day, so it might take a while to get to that point. If you find you can't progress at all, let your surgeon know. I feel my stomach straight down the center and a little to the left. There are stitches there so tightness and poking sensations are normal for a while, stitches dissolve in everyone at a different rate. If this continues to bother you though feel free to ask your surgeon! They can explain more about where your particular stitches are. Yes, sometimes my stomach flutters too. I think it is normal. Mine also does these spasms where it feels like it is doing cartwheels inside me, also normal. -
My water intake is good. I am not deficient as of my last visit less then a month ago. I contacted my dietician and she said I may be eating to fast or not chewing my food well enough. I agree on both. I notice some foods bother me more then others. I struggle with meat. And always if I eat or drink to fast. I just need to check myself and slow down.

Thank you all for the kudos. I'm wondering if my dramatic weight loss is partly due to malabsorption; I'm pretty vigilant about taking my supplements and focusing on protein. I'm going to go get tested for SIBO tomorrow- I had it before surgery and it was pretty awful. This time, it isn't quite as acute, but despite my care in diet, I find that food passes through. I did that crazy expensive anti-B the last time-- rifaximin-- not sure I want to spring for that again (cost is over 2k for a bottle of pills with a $700 co-pay-- the retail price for the drug outside of the States). Anyway, I should know the results quickly- the gastro I've been using is very good. And I cannot stress enough getting in some strength training, particularly if you are older. Even though I felt sort of lousy thing morning, working out made me feel better.

Post-op discomfort (poking sensation) and soft food phase
Lisa1313 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello - I had my my VSG about 20 days ago. I was cleared for the soft food phase but it takes me 2 hours to finish ONE egg and the food makes me feel like something is stuck in my throat. I decided to stay on purées because of it. Is that normal? How long does it last? Second question…. Where they heck is our stomach? Any discomfort I feel is only on my left side. When I feel the food “drop” it’s always there. I also feel a tightness and poking sensation on that side. Sometimes it feels like baby flutters too… Is that normal? Any advice would help. Thanks!! -
Help, ive been stuck for 3+ weeks

Also don't forget possible "excess weight" from any loose skin and also fluid retention from certain foods, but also from building muscle during your workouts. You can continue to burn fat, which is the weight loss you want, but may add pounds on the scale since muscle weights roughly 1.5x that of fat. That's why the NSV's become more important towards the end. You may not be the goal weight number, but your BMI may already be there. -

Weight gain 3 weeks after surgery
New To This23 replied to heather26's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@The Greater Fool Thank you for this, I am currently trying to figure this out, even though I am on the puree stage AND I never feel hungry either. My Dr. told me feeling full now is going to be different than before and I am still early out from surgery, but I am starting to get it. -

Yeah, I tried not to go overboard the week before. But the first 3 days were definitely the hardest for sure! And that's what everyone said when I started. Now I'm just 3 days away from surgery! So close! But then still weeks of recovery before real food again. But just reminding myself of the goal. -
Weight gain 3 weeks after surgery
heather26 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Im getting a little discouraged,Ive read about the 3 week stall but im having the 3 week gain. I had gastric bypass 10/18 I also had my gallbladder removed. The first 2 weeks I lost 18 pounds.I was happy and then i go to my clinic for a class with people who had surgery the same day or around the same time.We were there to go over the next phase of eating .Everyone was discussing there weigh loss (30lbs and up) and what they've been eating.I thought to myself im eating far less than most of them why am I only down 18 and there 30+ At the time I was having 8oz of pureed soup,a protein shake or two,and 32oz of water.Im having trouble getting in 64oz of water.I thought maybe Im not eating enough so I started getting in 3 meals a day and now they are allowing us to eat solids at our own pace. I went to the store and bought full grain bread, avacodo, and sliced cheese. First thing in the morning Ive been having 1/2 of one slice of bread with avacodo or a slice of cheese. For lunch I'll have the other half of slice of bread with avacodo, and dinner I'll have pureed soup 4oz. I dont stop eating because Im full,I stop eating because Im afraid of eating to much and getting sick. I've been eating far less than I have ever eaten in my life and now everytime I step on the scale for the past couple of weeks i've been gaining weight everyday!! I dont get it.Why would I be gaining weight when Im eating healthy and Im not going over 4oz each time I eat. Ive gained 3 lbs so far. -
What are some quintessentially Irish/Scottish/Welsh/English soft foods?
summerseeker replied to Wildflower Bohême's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Definitely either a Shepherds pie, its made with beef mince or a cottage pie if its made with minced lamb. You can add grated cheese to the mash to make it even more yummy. They are very portable. Fish pie is a similar thing. Its usually white fish and a few prawns in a white or cheese sauce with mashed potato on top. Any stew, with or without dumplings. Here in the north of UK, its all long , slow cooked cheaper cuts of meat that we love like oxtail or neck of lamb [ scrag end ] The bones make yummy gravy Scotch Broth is a thick soup with barley [spelt] and vegetables with almost any meat and can be carried in a flask. Rice pudding with lots of nutmeg and vanilla is still a recipe that has passed the test of time, we love the stuff. Anything with custard like the Christmas fav of Trifle. Curry is the No. 1 favourite food in the UK, so we can steal that too. There are lots of Keema ones made with minced meat. I make a lot of Tarka dhal with red lentils Have a great time -

Any, can I ask what hospital and who your doctor was for the prep and surgery? I was surprised to hear you say you didn't have a pre-op diet - so no liquid diet for a week or 2 before your surgery? A lil FYI: beware, this site is super pricey for the items you mentioned. Try WalMart online....same stuff for way cheaper!!! A 12-pack of Premier shakes is $25 compared to here at almost $40. Walmart also has a nice organic chicken bone brone broth, Pacific Foods. Important to follow pre and post surgery guidelines but we still need to watch our spending power too. I hope you are doing better. -
Foamies can be unpleasant if you eat too fast or too much or something that is too dry or too coarse. I find it can happen if it’s something my tummy decides it doesn’t like (like it recently decided it didn’t like eggs anymore though I’d been eating them without issue for 4 years). But I wonder if it may be dumping because of the nausea & tiredness which you don’t get with the foamies. While generally caused by fats & sugars, other things can set it off too like starch heavy foods & even dairy in some. But yes certainly needs a visit with your surgeon to see what’s going on.

ChunkCat replied to Wildflower Bohême's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I think colcannon would be good with maybe baby spinach or a more tender cabbage! My first thought when I read your post is a shepherd's pie. The ground meat and tender veggies would be perfect for soft foods, it's on my list to make as soon as I hit that stage because I think it'll be perfect in little ramekins! Or a Guinness stew! ETA: My partner who is from New Zealand and has eaten a fair amount of that sort of food says black pudding if you want to be really authentic! LOL -

I'm in Florida, USA and will be going to a Renaissance Fest in December. The theme for that weekend is "Celtic Christmas." I'm in the soft foods stage, so I can't eat what they traditionally sell at these kinds of fairs: giant turkey legs, meat pies, pub food, and general fatty/sugary things. Thankfully, their website says that those with "medical dietary needs" can bring outside food. So I'm wondering what kind of traditional UK or Irish food I could make and bring with me? They wouldn't need to be "period appropriate" (I think historical accuracy isn't always a big concern with these fairs) but I would like to get into the feel of it! By that point I'll have been cleared to have ground beef, soft dark meat chicken or turkey, fruits, and small amounts of butter or oil, in addition to the usual soft stuff, including vegetables. I was thinking colcannon made with cauliflower instead of potatoes? Something with meat would be nice too! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! -
You need to go back to your team and get them to work it out. You should not be ill every time you eat. You will feel tired and yucky. You are getting no nutrients. I hope you get the answers you need What foods do you eat ? Are you sick if you have liquids ? Are your foods dry ? You are a little late for a stricture so that can not be the problem. I occasionally vomit [ the foamies] because of over eating or drinking too quickly after food. I still take anti nausea and Gerd medication.

Honestly, I have found hardly anyone else with as restrictive of a pre-op diet, though I'm already sort of getting used to it. Unbelievably, I woke up this morning hardly hungry at all! Throughout the day, I've had to force myself to drink the protein shakes. I definitely feel like there were plenty of times when I could have done without it and not been bothered. What a difference a day makes! The only time I've gotten really, reallllly hungry was when driving by my favorite Hibachi spot on my way to pick up a blender (I've decided to invest one solely for the purpose of turning ice into snow and giving myself SOMETHING to chew on/crunch). And oh my gosh, the YouTube ads for food have been downright taunting. 😩 It's kind of crazy how prevalent food encouragement is in our day-to-day, something I haven't noticed before now. Anyway, I'm hoping that our tummies can keep up the good work and that Day 20 will be as easy as Day 2. Thank you for the encouragement, sending best wishes right back at ya! -

My surgery went really well. Surgeon even got me in earlier than expected that day. I've been at home since yesterday. Been working on getting my water and food down. Haven't had any nausea or vomiting. Making sure to walk every hour or two. Getting easier for water just set a recurrent timer for 5 mins and have been taking sips every 5 mins. The gas in the shoulders feels like a pulled muscle pain to me. -

I’m going to have to get there mentally. That’s going to be the hard part for me. I was prepared for all the exercising portioning cutting food out but I don’t think I was totally ready for the mental load it puts on you. -
Great job! My doctors are very happy with where I am. I've regained about 10 pounds, which I'm not super happy about, but here we are. LOL! My personal weight goal is 150. My doctor's goal for me is 163. The lowest I got was 166. I'm struggling with food choices, right now. I'm eating too much protein. But proteins are easy, grab-and-go, fast to prepare, so they're what I tend to reach for. But, they also make you gain weight, if you eat too much of them. I'm trying to strike a balance. I've also developed hypoglycemia. So, I have to eat about every 2 hours. When I prep my food, I do better with my eating. Again, the grab-and-go thing really helps. And having veggies already washed and cut up, in the fridge, encourages me to eat less protein and more vegetables - which I really need to be doing. But, overall, I'm doing really well. I'm no longer diabetic. My cholesterol is normal. My blood pressure is actually on the low end. I'm off of all my obesity-related medications. I had my final visit with my therapist, on Tuesday. He thinks I'm in a really good place and don't need him anymore. Besides a couple of little speed bumps I've had along the way (an issue with my diaphragm and the hypoglycemia) this has been an amazing, wonderful, journey. I have no regrets.

Twisty stomach pains when eating/drinking
Arabesque replied to ChunkCat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@summerseeker is on the money. You’ve just had pretty major surgery & have lots of sutures & stables holding your new digestive system together. It is easy to forget when we can’t actually see the wound. You’ll probably experience cramps, spasms, discomfort for a while until you’re more fully healed. Though it will happen less frequently & less intensively as you recover. Don’t forget too your tummy can be pretty fussy/sensitive about certain foods & liquids for a while which can make finding what you can tolerate eating & drinking challenging at times. Lots of trial & error to begin but it really does get better & easier. I found warm drinks more soothing too (I even warmed some of my shakes) but yes some say the colder the better. I also used to dilute my shakes & soups at first to make them both thinner & make the flavour less intense. All the best.
