Vitamins not staying down...
onelessfatgirl replied to ..................'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take the chewable bariatric advantage multivitamin with the Vit D and B12. They were just making me queasy but last Friday I actually threw up. Since then I gave been breaking then in halves and quarters and only taking in more once the nausea subsides. Can you break your vitamin dosage up to see if that changes things? -
Just got approved by my insurance for this and wondering if the liquid Vitamins that Insure sends are all-encompassing or if you have to take additional Calcium, B-12 ,D, etc. I currently use Bariatric fusion chewables (2 in am, 2 in pm) that I buy from my surgeon, and I don't need any addiitonal calcium or other pills with those. Just wondering as there isn't much info about the liquid vitamins on Insure's site.

Able to Eat Almost Anything
Djmohr replied to Kathy L's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too have never had dumping and can literally eat anything I want. At first my bariatric team though I had not pushed the boundaries yet but I can assure you I have and although some things like ice cream make my yummy feel heavy and uncomfortable, I don't get sick. Here is the thing, your new stomach controls how much you can fit into it. You control what and how often you put something into it. This is why building good eating habits is critical to your success. Just because I can eat anything I want, does not mean that should. This is simply a tool to help you manage your hunger. You have to get to the point where you truly recognize real hunger and a whole new feeling of full. Full now does not mean stuffed to the point where you are uncomfortable. I used to do that all the time. Full now means satisfied and comfortable. This is exactly why having this surgery is very hard work. You have to manage your food, Water and activity every single minute of the day. If you do that, the rewards are incredible. Better health, massive weight loss and more energy than you can imagine. I consider myself very lucky to be able to eat what I want without getting sick. Good luck to you guys! -
@ To surfer girls point, if you choose a Bariatric center of excellence, your chances are better than your new insurance will cover you down the road. But I would definately get started because there is likely going to be a supervised diet of some sort that insurance or the center itself requires. Good luck to you!

Lit studies are some of the best groups! If you want to, once we get our stuff, we can do a little topic study each day, which will definitely attract others. I ordered the 12 OA Steps, the workbook, meditation and stdy book. That could keep us busy a while! I am so happy to be working a piece of this into my bariatric experience! I trust the Higher Power of my understanding and am alive so far...

Curve ball 101----big curve ball!!!!!!!!!
HeatherO replied to Don's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also think the band sounds better when you don't have too much to lose. I don't know how tall you are but I would imagine you have less than 100 pounds to lose to get to a normal BMI. It is so much less stress on the body. Another way to look at it is by reviewing your eating habits. If you are a chronic overeater at meal times, banding may be the best choice. If you are a sweetaholic or primarily eat junk food, then R&Y might have the added benefit of the "dumping" syndrome which might cause you to lose the desire to eat sweets if you get exceedingly sick when you do. Also keep in mind that doctors have their preferences as well. Some doctors favor one surgery over the other in most cases. Your doctor could be biased one way or the other and it is helpful to keep this in mind. Ask your doctor why they prefer one over the other in your particular case to see if it makes sense to you . . . after all, it is your ultimate decision. If you can get cardiac clearance and bariatric surgery would be considered relatively safe from your doctors perspective, I think you would still benefit from taking off the weight. Any excess weight is a strain on your heart. Weight loss with a healthy diet and doctor approved exercise may prolong and enhance your life considerably. -
Jillypie, My nutrtionalist said that if they deny you 2 times, appeal again and it goes to a Bariatric/Lap Band surgeon for a decision. and more than likely you will get approved. I hope this helps, and you are in my prayers!:crying:

Well that was new...I called UHC to check on the status of my paperwork and I was transfered to the bariatric resources department. I had to enroll in their program and set up an appointment for their nurse to call me next Monday at 1:00 to go over my paperwork. The surgery is approved on a case by case basis. Anyone else go through this?

I had a letter after four business days. I didn't even have to call. But I knew I had bariatrics covered on my plan. My surgeon and I scheduled my surgery date and everything prior to approval.

Diabetes & insulin
girl4god77 replied to girl4god77's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's awesome miiasan! I know that you can't cure diabetes, but the bariatric program says that the rny can totally help put it in remission. I'm hopeful. I would love to get off of all meds eventually. I have high BP as well. I recently saw people on another forum talk about how after their surgery they're actually having issues with low BP. Pretty drastic the changes your body goes through. But I guess it's different for everyone. Best of luck on continued success. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Hello new friends!
Elvenprincess replied to SevenLeafClover's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all! I am new to the forum as well. I started my journey in July 2015. I had my sleep study done and signed up for a weight management class which is required by my insurance which is Kaiser. I had to wait until November to start because the classes fill up fast. It was an 8 week class. After that I attended the orientation on January 27th. Then I had to have a hour appointment with the nutritionist and social worker for the program. I had that appointment on 4/20 and had my blood work done. Now I am waiting for the bariatric team to review my chart on 5/4 and call to set a consult with the surgeon. I have lost 41lbs since starting my class in November. I am so excited to get the call for my next step! Thanks for reading this and I am so glad I found this forum! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Will see how it goes and report back. I'm anxious for some reason, to the point of getting heartburn. They said expect this first appt to be 2 1/2-3 hrs. I've done WW off and on for years...know how to track, now just need to learn how to change what I'm eating to be in-line with bariatric surgery. It will be eye opening in sure, as like many people out there, even eating healthy includes carbs like bread, fruit and yogurt. Wish me luck! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Calling insurance to check in on approval/receipt
Andi07 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have UHC. Went to the surgeon last Friday to submit to my insurance and I want to make sure they have received it. Should I call the prior authorization line, the regular number or my Bariatric nurse? All 3? LOL -
Pre-op...waiting to schedule consult
Elvenprincess posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone! I am new to this forum as well. I started my journey back in July 2015. I had my sleep study completed and then I had to register for a weight management class which is required by my insurance which is Kaiser. I had to wait until November to take the class because they fill up fast. The class lasted eight weeks and after the class I attended the orientation on January 27. My next step was to have an hour-long appointment with the nutritionist and social worker. I completed that on April 20 and also had my blood drawn the same day. Now I'm just waiting for the bariatric team to review my chart on May 4 and then call me to schedule a consultation with the surgeon. The process is so long but it is definitely well worth it. I'm so excited to get the call for my next step. I am so glad that I found this forum and glad that I have all of you for support. I would love to hear how your journeys are going and any advice that you have. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Is anyone else struggling with the Pre-Op Diet?
Dub replied to erinkath's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@erinkath you are certainly not alone in your dislike of the pre-op diet. I think that Kinda was spot on in his reply, too. I used pre-mixed shakes on work days.....just easier to handle and mixed my own using powder and Water on my days off. I had 3-4 a day. I did use unjury chicken Soup flavor powder some, too. When mixed with warm-hot water it was a nice savory change over the other shakes. Water....water....water. It was my friend. I did not go caffeine free on my plan....surgeon was okay with that. I was not allowed salad, milk or anything like that. I'm glad....as I'd have been chomping on stuff and surely add in items that I shouldn't have. One thought keep resonating around in my skull during the pre-op liquid diet......one main thought. It was a tremendous fear. It was the visions of watching the surgical videos from our seminars. Seeing the part of the surgery where the liver is lifted out of the way was scary. Both times I went through this seminar (two different bariatric programs prior to my surgery....as I switched surgeons....switched bariatric centers)....both times....the surgeons stopped the presentation with this image on the screen......they drove home the point about easily damaged the liver can be from raising it up and holding it there throughout the process. They emphasized how critical it is that we remain vigilant during our pre-op liquid diet in order to shrink the liver as much as possible. They each recounted having patients that they had to abort the surgery up getting to this point due to their assessment of the patient's liver at this time. I did not want to be that guy.....the one who wakes up in recovery to find that his surgery was aborted. Now....the above scenario was a worst case scenario that the surgeons portrayed.......but it hit me like a hammer. It was a singular reason to adhere to the liquid diet. It was enough. My pre-op liquid diet was 14 days. I lost 10 pounds during that time. This followed losing 45 pounds in the four months prior after starting my bariatric program. That is a big change in rate of loss and was a very pleasant byproduct of adhering to the diet. It had me rolling into my surgery with confidence and momentum. Please.....consider this your way to take action.....to own your safety.....to do your part to ensure a safe surgery. You will find the same liquid diet is a piece of cake to adhere to after surgery. So easy, in fact, that I stayed with it for 4 weeks vs the normal 2-3. I had no desire to do the puree phase as I was completely satisfied with the liquid and the rate of loss. I didn't then......nor do I now....have any type of hunger. None. If I get the urge...it is in my head and not real. I wish you the best and know for certain that you can do this. -
Having some trouble...
Montana Gal replied to Lizardlady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with @@VSGAnn2014, you are doing fine. My bariatric team told me that Isopure counted towards my Water intake, before and after surgery. Shows how different each clinic is with their guidelines. Your daily intake is very similar to what mine looked like pre and immediate post op. Hang in there, good luck with your surgery in May...keep us posted! -
Surgery date is May 26th. Yippee!!! I am six days in on my pre diet. It's not to bad but I am so tired. By dinner time I am ready for bed. Hope I get a little energy back I have a lots of things to get ready before Thursday. I haven't been to nervous yet but I am sure that will come. Thanks for being so supportive it is amazing how much bariatric pal helps. Just knowing others are going through the same thing helps.

Congrats! I'm excited for you! I was just told today by Aetna that my surgeon and affiliated hospital aren't one of their preferred IOQ facilities, even though they're in network. Otherwise I would've been approved. Apparently there's extra requirements for bariatric surgery under my plan. Smh So my appt with new surgeon is set for May 20th. Dawnie_doo

So I work in the medical community and I have an appointment with a bariatric surgeon on 07/21. In preparation for this I had consultations with a pulmonologist and a cardiologist. I have appointments already scheduled for after the appointment with a nutritionist, psychologist, and gastroenterologist. I have my stress echo scheduled (07/28) and my sleep apnea appointment tonight. I've read several books and done a bit of research to prepare. Is there anything else I should do in preparation? I work strange hours and cannot always say I'll be out by time X, Y, or Z but I have a flexible schedule for the next four weeks hence wanting to schedule my specialists and testing as much as possible.

Anybody using BMI Utah (Bariatric Medicine Institute)?
lovemybody replied to careya123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Standard Restaurant Supply off of 3500 South and West Temple has an entire wall of Syrups. They have tons of different flavors in large bottles for the same price you pay for small bottles at the grocery store. They have both regular and sugar free so be careful when reading the labels because the bottles look alike. They are open on Saturday's too. MD Diet 3655 South State has a small store inside their office building where you can buy bariatric supplies such as protein puddings, protein drinks, flavored fruit drinks with protein, soups and various powdered protein. They are typically open Monday-Friday 8-5 but I am not sure about Saturday's. As for calling about medical records I did the same thing. They kept saying that they faxed it but BMI never said if it had come in and the site didn't update that information. Finally they received them yesterday along with my labs so now its in the criteria review stage. I certainly understand the frustration to get moving on the paperwork. -
