  1. If someone has severe GERD and/or Barrett's esophagus, needs to take NSAIDS for a medical condition - these can all be reasons to recommend the by pass over the sleeve. How do you revise from the sleeve to a mini bypass?
  2. I revised to the sleeve and it has never worked for me at all, I however had great success with the band. I'm now seeing a lot of information that says because of the damage the band can do to the stomach and because a lot of band patients are already adapted to reduced calorie lifestyles that the mini gastric bypass may be a better option. I'm considering revising to this myself. I'm reading great things about it!
  3. My surgeon (one of the top) recommended the sleeve for me. Brief story : I was banded in 2007 and very successful 100% loss of excessive weight. 8 years and 2 kids later the band no longer working and hard to adjust, esophagus mildly enlarged but returns to normal with unfill. I love the sound of the sleeve but worry when I read that bypass is a better revision from band. Do not want to make the wrong choice! I trust my surgeon who knows my history. What do you all think? Also important- I regained most of the weight!

    EDG Experience

So strange that you weren’t put out! I’ve had two endoscopies since gastric bypass and was put out the whole time. I can’t imagine being awake or even under twilight.
  5. I remember on the morning of my surgery saying to my partner "Do you think I can just lose the weight and keep it off on my own and not do the surgery?" That was obviously nerves talking, but his answer made perfect sense. He said, "If you could, you would have by now". Bariatric surgery is NOT a failure. It's still hard work after surgery to lose and maintain for the rest of your life. It's about using a tool to make the best choices for your health. You'll still have to eat properly and exercise, but WLS is the tool that will help you to learn how to change not only your weight, but your mindset. Since my bypass 11 months ago I have become intolerant of a good few foods - not a bad thing when they include sugary foods, fatty foods and absolutely intolerant of anything chocolate. It's not easy but it's your health you need to consider.
  6. Please bear in mind that I am a very happy and very successful bandit now 9 years post-op. I do not regret my band, would do it all over again and if I ever have to have it removed, I would hope to have a replacement. When I was banded in 2006, it was a miracle surgery. And for some people, who accept that they will still have to work hard, it is just that. It was and still is for me. But over the years it has become clear that serious complications necessitating further surgery are much more common than originally thought, some of these are avoidable by careful eating and by not keeping the band tight; unfortunately others are beyond our control. We used to be warned about band slips, leaks and about ( very rare) erosion into the stomach tissue but it turns out that a build up of scar tissue round the band (causing it to tighten) is quite common. It can be very difficult to get the right level of restriction and some people are tempted to keep it tight enough to physically limit food, in fact it was once thought this was how it should be. But this causes food to back up into the oesophagus and that risks problems such as oesophageal dysmotility which may be irreversible. It can also damage the vagus nerve. Quite a number of doctors have stopped implanting bands as they found the removal rate was unacceptably high and it was too easy not to lose enough weight. Revision from band to sleeve is not uncommon! We still need lots of will power. The band makes it easier by dimming hunger, but it does nothing for head hunger and, contrary to popular opinion, it does not and should not physically stop us eating. If it does it is too tight! Having said all that, I love my band, I know many successful long term bandits in real life. My own experience has been good and so has that of almost all those I actually know and have met. But don't rule out bypass. For many people the element of malabsorption is a key factor.
  7. I am having some of the same issues as the other posters. The first 80 pounds flew off with hardly any help from me. I was losing extremely fast. Then since November 07, I have only lost 27 pounds. I also see the same thing on my scale as far as being low one day and then next time looking like I gain 10 pounds....the next few days are back down to the low number again. I cycle 130 miles a week, averaging 16-19 mph, so I am buring mega calories.... I have less than 30 pounds to go to reach my personal goal(less than 50 to reach doctors), and it just is hard. But, as long as I don't gain the weight back I guess I will take it. Good luck to you!!!

Dumping Syndrome is "a good thing"!

i just got back from lunch with my friend that had bypass surgery...i don't know what she ate that triggered her to dump...but i didn't see anything good about it...pretty scary that ur body reacts that way if u eat the wrong thing....
  9. So yesterday I had to leave work early because I almost blacked out. I felt weak, faint, a little dizzy, and just plain bad. I was so afraid of going back to the hospital that I left work early and just went home to lay down. This happened after lunch and I thought it was the Soup I ate (maybe it had too much fat or oil or something) anyway I go to work today and after I came back from break I started to have the same symptoms again! I was freaking out thinking this was way serious and ended up calling on of the surgeons on call. The guy I spoke with wasn't my surgeon but I gave him a run down of everything and he said since I didn't have a fever, abdominal pain, or diarrhea it was nothing to come to the ER for. He then suggested that because this has been happening after I ate at work and then resumed standing up(for the rest of my shift) he said either my blood sugar is very low or you may be dehydrated(But he ruled out dehydration because I had gotten in all my fluids). He suggested I drink a couple of ounces of apple juice which I promptly did and I felt a little better but the symptoms returned! I drank a little more and low and behold, my symptoms were gone and I felt good as new! I really hated this happening at work though, because my boss(the assistant manager, anyway) wanted to know my business(Only my manager knew I was out for surgery). She then commented on my weight loss and asked me if I had gastric bypass! Luckily someone else was there in the room and immediately shut them down. (It's none of their business, the point was I don't feel well and I wanted to call my doctor). I was thankful for the other woman thinking it would be completely ridiculous(Word at my job spreads like wildfire, they thrive on rumors). I then gave some BS VAGUE story about my esophagus and how I can only eat certain things so as not to irritate it. After about an hour and a half I was able to resume my work shift! I have never in my life had issues with my blood sugar. I wasn't even "pre-diabetic" pre-op. So just be careful fellow sleevers!

    BCP after surgery

I haven't had my surgery yet, but I was told to stay on mine right through surgery, but use a back-up form of birth control for the first month or so post-op. I know birth control pills can be less effective in bypass patients, since bypass is a malabsorption procedure, but I hadn't heard of it being a concern with sleeve patients.
  11. Soooo...did more research and found that my surgeon participated in a bypass that caused a man to lose his legs...

    Can anyone help, or....

My cholesterol was oddly high at last check..... Doc said it was genetic/hereditary most likely and suggested whole 30. Ugh. My intake amount for solid foods has always felt abnormally small and I've tried, to no avail, to 'stretch' myself. Talk about pain! Maybe time for another swallow study. 1st go round was solely focused on the horrendous reflux issues..... Scared to death of another surgery at this point but I'm opening up to a bypass for quality of life reasons. Pot helps most everything
  13. You can do it! Just make a plan and stick to it. I'd like to lose another 20 before October 9th. I'm going to a concert and the last time I went to this venue was in November. I had to buy two tickets because I couldn't comfortably fit into one seat. I'm hoping this is a better experience.
  14. Sorry for hijacking the thread but this is for MadamPrincess24... It is hard - but it will be so worth it, trust me! You aren't lazy, you just had major surgery (am assuming you had sleeve or bypass)! Your hormones are also going a bit crazy as your body starts to release the fat and that can make you feel down... But don't give up, stick to what you have been told to drink at this stage. Sip, sip, sip! Your stomach is numb so you won't feel it if you are doing any damage by eating solid food. It's also trying to heal so give it a chance. And please cut yourself some slack. Do the best you can - and that means stick with the programme. Give this new life a try... Get up every hour and even if you just walk round and round the house it will help. Of course, it's different and the first few weeks are the worst but the rewards are huge, life changing. You miss food but eventually you will be eating again, just not as much. I am a year out and I make better food choices and eat less. I still enjoy eating and there's little I can't eat - I just choose not to. But I started out exactly where you are... Post when you are feeling down and there are lots of us who will give you support. We have all been where you are - and we survived! You will too, promise :-)))))
  15. My story us similar to yours. ..i lost 30kg in first 2 years and slowly gained it back. Next month i am having surgery revision to a mini gastric bypass. My very experienced weight loss surgeon said there is no point trying the sleeve. If the band gas failed the sleeve wont be right. Also the band has been eroding my stomach, caused a hernia and affected my esophagus. A dangerous and unsafe procedure in my opinion. I can never recomnend the band. ..ive spent so many nights in emergency!!! Cant wait for the bypass. Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App

    Biggest loser

I have never watched the how, but last night, I watched My 600lbs life on TLC. They were telling the story of a woman named Melissa who started at 651lbs. For 7 years cameras followed as she had gastric bypass and subsequent surgeries to remove excess skin. She eventually got down to about 150lbs, gained a bit back and eventually had a baby. I think she's in the 180 lbs range now but boy has she been through the ringer. It really makes me grateful for my own life and that I have been able to course correct.

    Common channel

I had a sleeve to single-anastomosis duodenal switch revision with a 300 cm common channel. I didn't have a DS or gastric bypass initially because the amount of malabsorption with a 100-150 cm common channel scares me. If this SA-DS had been around 3 years ago I might have gone for it.

2 surgeries in less than 2 weeks!

Hi everyone! Finally made it home today after being in the hospital for 4 days! Listen to your bodies! That's all I can say! For all of us who have undergone the bypass or the sleeve, no one knows the huge change we have endured! Everyone kept telling me it was gas when In fact I KNEW it was not! I knew something was wrong! Although I was upset about having to go through with another surgery, im in positive spirits and looking forward to recovering once again! Hugs and kisses to all of you that have reached out! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Lost, Stressed, :(

I'd do a lot more research before deciding to do a bypass. Too many public failures of the bypass. How many stars have we seen eat right through a bypass? I have a relative that used to weigh 400 lbs and got the bypass and got skinny, then turned around and gained it all back plus more. Stretched that puppy right out. From what I've learned, you can never stretch the sleeve to the size of your original stomach, or even close. Just sayin'... But yes. You need a doc that is FOR you.

    Post Op Complications

Thank you, I'm starting to think I should call as well. The only time one of his patients gets to see him is before the surgery and right after in the hospital. Everything else is done through the NP. : ( I'll give his office a call and then try to find the info of the doctor who did my recent procedure. I don't think I can wait until November to fix this.

    Reimbursement

Has anyone had any luck getting an insurance company to reimburse a self-pay? My insurance company (Aetna) had very restrictive guidelines for lapband so I wnet ahead and self-paid. Two day after my surgery, I recieved an approval for gastric-bypass from Aetna. Gastric bypass was not the right surgery from me so no great loss. I would like to get some reimbursement or at a minium coverage for fills, etc. What do you think?

    Needing Advice

What procedure are you considering? You will DEFINITELY lose weight with bypass and sleeve because those will permanently decrease the size of your stomach. The lap band is dependent on you getting the fills done when you need to. Now, with each of the procedures there is a post surgery diet that needs to be followed. No drinking while eating, also. may2018 bypass for pcos

I have PCOS (lifetime member). It was one of the reasons I had bypass. I'm loving it. Am losing steady but not like lightening. My A1c continues to improve as do other symptoms like BP. My insulin is still high, but I am still VLC (very low carb). So the combination is going to help really well.
