kooterpooters posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
SEEMS like on the message boards i go to for vsg info, HERE,OH,and Thinner times, seems like BCBS is starting to come to there senses.Seems like alot of approvals here lately..Hope thats the case.:001_smile: -
yes, be careful of the kid issue, here in Scottsdale a mother starved her kids because she didn't want them to be overweight and one died ( drastic vegan diet) it was horrifying!!!!! Kids should be loved, cherished, and nurtured!! and for the love of Pete, FED!!!!!!!! (I'm a big proponent of nursing, believe in it wholeheartedly, but not to the point of harming my child!!!! Who ARE these people?!?!?!!!!! anyway..... (my 2 cents)

Regret Telling Friends ...
RavenClaw779 replied to KimDB's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hear you! I am very lucky in that I volunteer in the nutrition center of my local hospital so the RD's are behind me all the way. My husband on the other hand while not unsupportive is of the "if you just tried harder..." school of thought(he doesn't have a weight problem and hasn't battled it for 20+ years). I was going to keep my surgery to myself as we live in a small town with a big gossip problem, but I felt that I probably should tell the family. BIG mistake - and one you'd think I'd have foreseen considering my sister-in-law has blabbed every confidence any friend has told her. I didn't even get to inform my mother-in-law before blabber-mouth called to tell her. Now everyone knows and feels compelled to ask the What? Why? and recount the "OMG I Heard...Horror Story". And the diet sabotage has begun...last week it was a family birthday dinner at the Outback that I just HAD to go to(per my s-i-l) - didn't. Today it's a phone message from the monster-in-law..."Family dinner tomorrow night...I know you're on your little diet, but maybe you can bring your special food..." - NOT! I'm sending the hubs and renting a movie - saving myself from an evening of BS Q&A! Like most women I do most things for others i.e. the family - But this journey I'm doing for me:thumbup: -

SATIETY 101: Satiety & The Restriction Myth
Jean McMillan replied to Jean McMillan's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Oh, I know so well the feeling that I must eat plenty now in anticipation of future famine. In one sense, it's ridiculous. I'm a middle-aged, middle-class, well-fed woman living in an over-fed nation. On the other hand, every living creature is hard-wired to fear famine. If we don't eat, eventually we die. It's a very tough nut to crack, but if we don't try, we die anyway, sooner or later. -
I have Bc/Bs of NJ, Medallion, I think it's a PPO, I got a response very fast, about 10 days. Everything was covered except the anesthesia. (I think they have fixed the anesthesia part by now.)

How Is It Possible to Lose This Quickly?
IsB replied to Mason's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've often wondered the same thing. I tracked my caloric intake for years and was never near what the charts told me I needed to maintain my heavier weight. Doctors would tell me that the diabetes medication I took was part of it. I think that those BMR numbers are BS. They may work in a general sense but each person is individual enough to see differing results. -
Hang on u may not like me after this LOL... Pros: my clothes are cheaper bc I can shop in the kids aisle. I sit better in chairs My feet no longer have plantar fascitis Goodbye insulin shots My feet shrank from a 8.5 to 7 Guys notice me now which is honestly annoying Ppl who don't know think I've been like this my whole life lol Ppl who do know me from school that bullied me were preppy are now my use to be size lol I can booty dance to the floor Lmao The final last precious one..my kids can wrap their arms around me. Cons: (potential could apply to u) You develop complications which require several surgeries You need blood-from a total stranger You can't sleep bc ur bones hurt against the mattress Ur hair falls out U stay lethargic U vomit..sometimes a lot U catch more colds U constantly freeze Ur body hurts everywhere bc its use to carrying loads of weight. U may continue to keep a few co morbidities U stay scared bc at anytime a food can cause dumping U get sad bc now u don't know how to cope like u use too. Alone u wonder why did I do this Intimately you feel ugly and unwanted bc your stomach is full of scars U don't tell anyone bc u don't want to hear how cruel and harsh ppl can be even if u are a size 4. What I've learned in this is u can 300lbs or 100lbs either way somebody somewhere is out there ready to berate u. One thing I urge u to do. Come to honest grips as to why and how u became obese. Lots of luck and love on ur journey.

Your doing great and actually u have lost a lot for a short time. U don't want it much faster BC then comes loose skin. Make sure if doc approved to use weights.

How many calories a day at 3 months?
CrissyRing77 replied to CrissyRing77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was released to all food at 8 weeks and have been eating all meats even had steak on that first day! The only thing that gives me issues is shredded beef from a Mexican restaurant no matter how long I chewed it wouldn't digest!! . I may try to kick the cheese :/ tho it's gonna be hard! I haven't started exercising at the gym yet bc I had/have an enlarged spleen so they won't release me yet. But I'm active with two small boys and walk when i can. I seem to be right in the middle or only slightly lower than most.... -
I've had trouble getting a practitioner to insert an IUD. I think it's because of my age (I won't need bBC for 10 more years). First I went to the NP and she didn't want to insert it because I wasn't menstruating also she would only insert the mirena and I was looking for a the non-hormonal paragard. So I made an appointment at PP and specifically asked if I needed to be menstruating. I'm told no,make an appointment, wait in their waiting room for 2 hors, pay a $30 copay, only to be told that she wants me to either take cytotec and come back or come back when I'm on my period. Argh. So I let myself be talked into the nuvaring but it didn't agree with me (see earlier post). And the copay for that was $25, so I paid $55 for no viable BC! Truly, I think I'm going to wing it. At my age there is less that a 1% chance of me getting pregnant and an even lower chance of me having a viable pregnancy. Maybe I should leave it in God's hands. Doubt I'll do that but I am frustrated Thanks for listening ladies.

Gastric RNY 1/27...This is exactly what I am going thru right now itching all over my body. I have broken out on my arms, legs, face, back and it’s nonstop itchy! I took benedryl and been through two tubes of cortisone 10. I just emailed my doctor told her we have to figure something out bc now I can’t sleep..I’ve been reading up on this and it’s stating it’s common due to allergic reaction to the surgical glue. I went and got some 100% aloe to help give little relief any suggestions? Do you think I should ask for prednisone bc I’ve seen others say that’s what’s helped with this same issue?? Anyone else out there with any suggestions??

My family is trying to talk me out of it!
pumpkin07 replied to pattimomof3nj's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband was born in Mexico and we used to go a lot. We will not travel there now. It is really dangerous. Last time we went we were stopped twice by cops for no reason except to give them money. as an american/blonde blue eyes I was treated very weirdly in our 4star hotel which was a Mex American hotel in Monterrey. Bit took me by surprise bc I have even traveled w GF in Mexico and always was treated so nicely. One night was especially frightening as i truly sensed a man who delivered food to my room was contemplating attacking me. I thought fast and tricked him out of my room and called front desk as he was pounding on my door. So recently we needed to return for wedding and we chickened out and lost 600.00. While there for wedding 1friend was pulled over and held at gunpoint by drug person. It was mistaken identity and finally they let him go. I bow we all want to lose our weight but it is my opinion that we should pay bigger prices and stay home. Risk of leak and murder/kidnapping too great for me. -

Pregnant During VSG surgery/??
FuriosMommy replied to ChrissyKat29's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
Wow, that is interesting. I was wondering about this very thing myself the other day since DH and I aren't using any formal BC methods and I'm getting my requirements together for surgery. Either way, congratulations on the baby and the surgery. Sounds like you have a pretty stubborn little bean in there to make it through the surgery. Sounds like a blessing in disguise to me. Congrats! -
This is major surgery and the normal post surgery conditions will apply. Gas, sore throat, incision pain and stomach distress. I was very fatigued for several weeks as a result of the surgery and decreased caloric intake. Many people refuse pain medication but not me. I took it as directed and stayed agead of the pain and experienced very little discomfort. Your stomach will be very swollen for several weeks and uncomfortable. Sip very very slowly and wait between sips. You may feel some pain in your chest when you drink. Wait for it to pass. I found warm chicken broth the easiest to tolerate that first week. I did not stress out about meeting the fluid and protein requirements and just did the best I could. Three months out I still don't meet the recommended fluids but get close. The first week I was hormonal and doubted my decision but that passed in several days. I'm not going to lie. The 1st month is tough. Three months out I am 52 lbs down and feel great. A stall will happen but stay on course bc it will pass. It is all normal. The weight will not magically fall off 48 hrs after surgery. At this point I lose about half a lb daily and weigh twice a week. I am 67 yrs old and this surgery will extend my life. That was my purpose. Relax and just ride it out. The journey is worth it. Best of luck.

My doc told me yesterday about the ups nd downs of all 3. Gave stats for all 3. Stated that altho he thinks the gbs is better than the other two, its all what the patient makes of them, bc all they do is provide the surgery, we still have to work at it. He said, he gives me the facts nd its up to me to put the rest of the work in by makn life long changes. I knew I wanted the sleeve and told him so. And no matter my question, he provided answers for all 3 procedures. It was a gr8 first visit nd like the postops say, its a tool nd u have to b committed to the changes. I can't wait to be on the same road to being healthy nd lookn even more fab, just less of me:) gla!!
-
Yes, my preop surgeons visit, I asked that question of weight gain w the sleeve bc I'd seen a lady who had gbs n gained it all bck n then some...he said yes, w any1 of the surgeries mentioned, u can gain it all nd more bck IF U CHOOSE to make the SAME BAD CHOICES AS PREOP, the surgeries are all tools, aides, to help us succeed, NOT MAKE US SUCCEED, it is still going to b up to the patient to make the tool work w u, not for you:) hope that helps nd makes sense to u. If u think its going to stop you from making bad choices, u shud rethink ur decision, the only thing that can do that is wiring ur mouth shut, then ud prolly die:/ start learning all u need to know about how to use the new tool, sleeve, prior to getting it. I mean, u can't know how to build a house just bc som1 handed u a hammer, it won't build itself, right? And u can't build a better more healthier you wo knowing how to work w ur sleeve. So gl to us all:))

A similar thing happened to me. I would get my period every 2 weeks. 14 days on/ 14 days off. Miserable... I went to my ob/gyn and he just said "that's pcos" and I told him that not for me, bc I normally never got it. He was hoping that I would start to ovulate...but no dice. I just started taking birth control, which usually helps me lose weight bc it regulates my hormones. I am hoping to have our first round of IVF this coming fall.

Students sent home from school for wearing American flag t-shirts on May 5
loserbob replied to ariscus99's topic in Rants & Raves
More politically correct bs. Fine them for taking our flag down, not disrupting a class. The problem here is, that is why they where fined(putting their flag up)but the police know they cant say its the reason because the ACLU will be all over it. Then we'll have 5 rich hispanics living "todays version" of the American dream, SUE everyone! Im not racist, I just dont think you need to be here if your not a citizen, Or legally here. Theres no other "modern" country in the world you can live in without being a legalized citizen, why should we start the trend? -
I am new, just joined today, although I pop on and read some of your posts now and then. I have a great doctor who just moved from the east coast and he is waiting for his privileges to practice. Hence, my surgery is about 2 weeks out. I will find out the date this week. And Monday I am planning to start the two week preop diet. Originally wanted the lap band, found out I wasn't a good candidate then decided on the sleeve until I changed my mind and wanted the Duodenal Switch. Chickened out of that one, and feel like a flake now. Back to the Sleeve now, and I think I am settled on it for sure. My story is probably the same as hundreds of you all's...Was thin my entire life, (born a premie at 4#) and started gaining at 19 with the birth control pill, and subsequent pregnancies. Yo yo dieting, start/stop smoking, rich foods, lack of exercise...the usual stuff-- brought me to 350 today. I have recently lost 30 (since March) but am trying so hard to not gain any of it back before the surgery, although it fluctuates daily, mostly in the right direction. I have been researching wt loss surgery and discussing it with my dear sweet husband (#2) for a couple years. And now, while I am between jobs (got laid off in March) no insurance hoops to jump through since I lost my insurance with the job, the timing is perfect. financing out of pocket so I will take any money saving tips you all can give me. :001_tongue: I am wondering if anyone actually loses 200 on a sleeve? I am 5'10 large frame and large muscles under a whole lot of fat tissue. If I get down to 150 I am probably looking at being a size 14. Not the 2-8's I see here, but I won't be discouraged. I am afraid of plateauing out. Still, even when I get to 200, I will feel like I have a new lease on life. Co-morbidities...how much time do you have? Severe sleep apnea (diagnosed a year ago) Pre-diabetic with a long family hx of it Neuropathy in arms and legs B/P creeping upwards GERD & Hiatal Hernia I left some things off, but you get the idea. A ticking time bomb just the same. I used to love cooking, but now I just dread it. And my husband loves eating. He is 6'2 250# could stand to lose about 30 so he has recently been trying to eat better while I am on my better eating habits. I have two major goals 1.) to be and feel healthier 2.) I know I might be too sensitive, but I am so tired of the cruelty and want it to go away with the weight. I don't know what possesses people to think they can treat obese folks like we're not human, but I am fed up. And after tolerating abuse my entire adult life (even from my first husband) I am so not looking forward to being abused for my decision to do something about it and take radical action. I have heard horror stories of the cruelty for making this decision. Anyone care to share their thoughts on that with me? So I am reluctant to tell many people I am doing this. Ok, enough of my random thoughts...I'd love to hear from you all. Anxious to start melting (and scared to death), ~GeorgieGirl1957

About to give up...
mominkansas replied to Dawnana's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Though your doc can request you pay for the COPY fee for your records, they have to give them to you. I would find a new doc. Don't burn any bridges till you find a new doc, but I think the new port thing is BS. What happens if you have an emergency? Are you going to wait in his office for 2 hours for him to see you? I had a prolapse and my tech lecctured me on why I waited so long to call him. You need to find someone that takes your band seriously so you can feel better! -
10 days post op?
BandedBettyBoop replied to RichGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc is opposed to snacking between meals unless it's sf popsicles or Jello. I would suggest trying to eat your breakfast and drink your lunch to see if that makes a difference? If it works for your schedule. I did that today and I noticed a huge diff. Probably bc it takes so much longer to drink a Protein shake? Idk... Richgirl don't feel bad about not losing. My scale hasnt moved much in the last few days. But we are still healing, so its okay! Give it some time. I have a holiday meeting/lunch with my job Thursday. It will be my 2 wk mark. Trying to figure out how to work my way through that. I'm so afraid to eat without a scale! Lol I can't quite eyeball 3 oz for some reason. I think it would be weird to bring a protein shake to a resturant! We will see.... -
Plain LOL What Canada are you referring to. We have an Ultra Conservative government in and the only socialist province (NDP) is Manitoba last I heard. In BC we have far right liberals. No, I just think the Canadians respect the needs of all, eh! Doddie

You know how you and the rest of the libs blast anything quoted by fox news? The dailykos is pretty much the biggest left wing hack, bs, super liberal, no news site on the internet. So I'll stick with the CBS poll for now. Thanks
