Had my sleeve surgery one week ago and have found it all easy except the first night with nausea. Never used pain meds and the nurses didn't believe me with I said I had no pain. They still kept me two nights instead of one. Completely off Diabeties medicines which completely blows my mind. The past three weeks of liquids has been ok, I guess. I'm getting ready to start the pureed food portion and really looking forward to it. I want to have the taste of some real food in my mouth and not just broth or Protein shakes. I went back to work on this past Wednesday (half days) and my husband had taken the week off so he drove me back and forth. I found I made it through the few hours, then came home and was exhausted. My office is very supportive and there were no issues there. Next week I'm going to try driving myself and do full days. 25 lbs down (17 pre-op, 8 in one week). I've decided to only weigh myself on Fridays. Some in my office have said they can see it already. Not sure I believe it, but nice of them to say none the less. Not going to see my family until Thanksgiving. Really hoping to be at least 60+ more lbs down by then. I think that is more than attainable. I hope others who are thinking about this investigate all your options, understand the risks and all possible side effects. I had and was prepared for the worst. My story so far has been smooth, but I won't forget all the things that can still happen. I already wish I had done this years ago.

I got a personal thank you note from Doctor Aceves
VSGbyACEVES posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
OK--I was already completely impressed by Doctor Aceves, but now I am over the Moon with his gracious way of being in the world. I got a personal thank you note for doing my surgery with him on May 2-2011. WOW-o-WOW So let me share a few things. I lost 25 lbs in 22 days--now I have plateaued for a couple of days. My incisions are sooooooo teeny weeny that I will be in a 2-piece bathing suit by the 4th of July. I heard that Doctor Aceves once considered being a plastic surgeon--which answer the question why HE is so good at making the incisions so small. Even the one where my stomach was pulled out--that one is smaller than the head of a fingernail clipper. I am now using Fougera Vitamin A & Vitamin D Ointment and wheat germ oil on the scars--I can barely see them. I first heard about a Vertical Gastric Sleeve from a woman from Morroco who had her surgery in France. She told me all about the surgery, different from my incisions, hers were huge and her scars looked bad. That is what I had prepared myself for because I felt it was worth the weightloss. OK-now don't I feel good that I found the right surgeon who has not only performed 3500 weight loss surgeries, has been a board certified surgeon for over 25 years, he also knows how to make his incisions so small that many would wish that they would have come to him. Now Doctor Aceves is also realistic. Before he takes you into surgery, you can expect a 30 minute lecture about what he is doing to help you, and then WHAT is your responsibility to get where you want to go with your long-term weightloss. SUCCESS depends on YOU. [more on this on another post]. I do read on this forum about acid reflux. Dr. A requires that his patients take Nexium for a minimum of 3-mo's. What has helped me to lose the 25 lbs so quickly is the quality and the amount of PROTEIN I am bringing into my body. Doctor A. does a great blood test before the surgery, and even though I thought I was doing alot of protein before the surgery, it was low quality protein. My bloodtest came back extremely low in my protein levels!! WOW--who knew? So finally I am hydrating my body with 64 oz of water daily and I went to GNC [not my normal place to shop] to pick up the ZERO carb Iso-pure drink [40 gm of protein per drink] and then I picked up the Vanilla IsoPure shakes, which is 50 gm of protein/shake. So one drink + one shake - I am getting 90 gm of protein/day and the minimum he feels we should have is 60 gm/day. It is important to get that protein into your body the first thing in the morning so I mix a 16 oz shake [two scoops] and put half of it in the fridge. Then throughout the day, I drink one zero-carb drink. My body is really responding well to THAT daily routine. Check me out on YouTubes! Search for: I left my stomach in Mexicali. -
Maybe a few years down the road, she'll be talking about your huge success to other patients. People repeat what they "know" (or, rather, what they think they know). Often, they are wrong. With your banding success, you will teach her the error of her ways  My PCP had no role in my banding--I didn't need his approval, and he wasn't part of the process. But he was mildly....not disapproving, but not particularly supportive. But when I saw him next 40 pounds down, he really was impressed. Turns out he has another banded patient who gained weight. After talking with me about what I eat, he talked with the other guy, and learned that, because he had difficulty with dense Proteins, he was taking in about 3000 calories of Ensure each day. We talked a lot about my doctor's aftercare, and diet recommendations, and I learned that the PCP's initial lack of enthusiasm was based on this other patient's experience. He now not only views it very differently, but is able to guide the other patient more effectively (including, if he wants, to MY surgeon's postop support group). So, people can and do sometimes change their opinions--after all, there are many paths to the same destination.

This is totally normal at this point. The weight will come off. Your job is to eat proteins and get all your fluids in. Make sure your hydrated because dehydration really sucks..... Sit back and watch the weight come off now. Work on new eating habits and exercise. This is such an awesome ride....

Diagnosed wih Gluten intolerance/Celiac Isease
Baba Wawa replied to coley1221's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It's unlikely your gluten intolerance was caused by your band. I do want to add that you CAN follow a band compliant diet and eat many foods with gluten, since its hidden in many condiments and used in a variety of foods. Here's a list: The following items may or may not contain gluten depending on where and how they are made, and it is sometimes necessary to check with the manufacturer to find out: Artificial Color4 Baking Powder4 Caramel Color1, 3 Caramel Flavoring1, 3 Clarifying Agents4 Coloring4 Dextrins1,7 Dextrimaltose1,7 Dry Roasted Nuts4 Emulsifiers4 enzymes4 Fat Replacer4 Flavoring6 food Starch1, 4 Food Starch Modified1, 4 Glucose Syrup4 Gravy Cubes4 Ground Spices4 HPP4 HVP4 Hydrolyzed Plant Protein4 Hydrolyzed Protein4 Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein4 Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate4 Hydroxypropylated Starch4 Maltose4 Miso4 Mixed Tocopherols4 Modified Food Starch1, 4 Modified Starch1, 4 Natural Flavoring6 Natural Flavors6 Natural Juices4 Non-dairy Creamer4 Pregelatinized Starch4 Protein Hydrolysates4 Seafood Analogs4 Seasonings4 Sirimi4 Smoke Flavoring4 Soba Noodles4 Soy Sauce4 Soy Sauce Solids4 Sphingolipids4 Stabilizers4 Starch1, 4 Stock Cubes4 Suet4 Tocopherols4 Vegetable Broth4 Vegetable Gum4 Vegetable Protein4 Vegetable Starch4 Vitamins4 Wheat Starch5 -
Soft, mushy ones. I wasn't allowed to eat any veggies for 8 weeks. Once I could eat them again, they had to be pretty soft - well cooked broccoli was good. Canned pumpkin/yams another good one. I like to make pumpkin custard, using more eggs than normal pumpkin pie to up the protein. I use a little Monkfruit sweetener and bake without a crust. It's a great way to get in an orange veggie + protein. Canned beets, well cooked green beans, turnip all good. You can put green leafies in the blender for smoothies. 6 months out and I am just able to eat raw veggies. They have to be chewed to mush and swallowed very carefully in tiny bits. More often than not, I make a veggie soup with shredded carrot, cabbage, onion, shredded broccoli stems. Made with bone broth as stock, it has protein and is a good filler if I get the "hungries."

3 wks post op...stall
superchica879 replied to NicoleLpn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too have stalled from week 3-4, I am praying that it starts up again soon. I've heard others say if you don't get in enough calories also, like around 700-900 a day that our bodies will think there starving and just hold onto the weight. So we need to look at protein and calorie intake when we eat and of course our water! -
Post Surgery gastric bypass
jrmoseley replied to KathyHayles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It takes some time to meet those protein and liquid goals. Every day will be a little easier than the day before. Then one day you'll wake up in the morning and realize nothing hurts! Later that same day, you'll drink too fast and invent a new swear word! But each day it will get easier, and you'll start seeing the results you want. Hang in there! 6g of protein is too small if the doctor wants you at 60-70g of protein each day. Sounds like a hot day treat thrist quencher.

2018: Study suggests that type of weight loss surgery matters
MargoCL replied to Born in Missouri's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@FluffyChix, I agree all the research I've done this past year showed the same thing. Hence why I chose the sleeve over the other options. -
I’m 3 weeks post op gastric bypass and these past couple of days I have been extremely nauseous. Zofran isnt helping not are those nausea patches they gave me. How did you guys treat nausea post op. Before the operation I’d have ginger ale, and saltines. But obviously those aren’t an option now. i only started the purée food diet a week ago and have actually put myself back on the liquid diet until my appt on the 27th because I keep having complications (inability to tolerate most foods (severe cramping, vomiting and diarrhea). But now with this nausea I’m struggling to even get in a protein drink or my daily liquid intake. Yesterday I had 20 oz liquid. It’s Sunday so my dr isn’t even in the office.

Still Remaining Strong On This Pre-Op Liquid Diet!!
donna12 replied to shrcumm's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Through Christ all things are possible! Congrats on your 9 lbs lost. Can I ask what brand Protein shakes you are drinking? I'm shopping around now and trying them to see what I can tolerate. I tried EAS Advatage and it was nasty and litteraly almost puked it up, couldn'd finish it. Of course I'm not on the pre-op diet yet but supplementing a meal with a shake at this point to try them out. I wish you the best of luck, I know you will do great. Donna -
If you live in the Dallas Ft Worth area and are willing to pick this stuff up in North Oak Cliff, I have a bag full of goodies that I couldn't use. It includes 2 Tubs of nectar Protein (one has 1 serving missing), 2 bottles of the Bariatric Advantage Vitamin crystals (I might have used 2 servings out of one bottle); some Bariatric Advantage chocolate Protein Bars, A few single serving Bariatric Advantage shakes, a chewable multi vitamin, and a few other odds and ends that I was supposed to use post op, but couldn't. I hate to just throw the stuff out, so I am hoping someone can use it! Message me.

I recieved it in the mail not to bad. 2 Protein shakes 1 1/2 pieces of fresh fruit. 4 oz turkey or lean meats 2 slices of lite whole grain bread. and 6 oz of lite yogurt. about 800 calories. this seems about the same or less than I will eat when I am on the full food stage. Oh well. I have to bear down and just do it. It starts 9/9 and then a battery of preop tests and nutrition classes on the 15th and surgery on the 23rd. It will be here before I know it. Greg

Thanks for the response. Well went to the dr for my followup and she suggested adding an additional scoop of Protein to my ready to drink. So I have doubled the amt of protein without having to increase volume. She said even though I am not having any trouble drinking she is still concerned with stressing the revision with all the complications.

yes I know how you feel, if I didn't have the option to add the sleeve, I would've just removed, just to get it out! take care of yourself

At 13 days post op and in the puréed phase I finally felt normal, I was able to get in a Protein shake for Breakfast, Greek yogurt for lunch, string cheese around three, and two bites of puréed chicken around 7. However, I woke up the next day and hurt with every sip I tried to take, this is so frustrating!!! I need to be back at work but do not have the energy and I know this is because I'm not getting enough food. Has this happened to anyone else? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Thanks, I sent my DH to the store for the Gas-X just in case. I appreciate the info. You got a fill in four weeks, that is pretty quick. How many lbs have you lost so far? Did you lose when the band was empty? I have been trying to get in the liquids so far I think I'm doing great on that. I did buy this stuff called Whey 42 which is 42 gms of protein. It tastes pretty good, it comes in like a plastic bullet (grape, orange, etc.) you take the top off and drink it. It's clear and not very much (thanks for that). But it gets me 42 gms of protein in easily.

Well its been a little over 3 months since I made the lifechanging trip to mexico and had surgery with Dr. Garcia. As of today I am down 41 lbs. I just wanted to say I am doing GREAT! At this point I can eat most anything without problem (although plain water still makes me sick) IF I wanted to I could easily eat quite a bit, HOWEVER having the surgery and seeing the weight loss has become an AMAZING motivation to stay on track. I now actually LOOK forward to exercising, it's become a time for quiet and to destress. I exercise at least 3x a week doing strength and cardio. As for food, I found myself eating too many carbs these past few weeks and decided it was time to go back to basics and focus on protein. I've been following the Atkins phase 1, BEFORE surgery giving up carbs would have been a nightmare and I would have been unsuccessful. NOW though I am half way through my first week on the low carb diet and feel fine, and havent had any struggle to do it or stick to it I wouldnt say the sleeve FORCES me to eat right, or exercise, or stay on track. It instead MOTIVATES me to do so and gives me that little extra push I need. The sleeve has been my catalyst to get my eating under control and live healthy. I am posting pics of my month progress (Please note the change in back fat. I was a low BMI to begin with, but decided on the surgery because I have scolisosis and have steel rods attached to my spine and the weight was causing me pain and discomfort. Now that I am carrying less weight my back feels SO much better) ETA: also notice the short changes in the pics, The shorts I wore in my pre op pics dont fit any more and I've had to wear the bra on a tighter link

Surgery scheduled for Oct. 6th and I'm on day 3 of my pre-op diet. Which consists of 3 boost high protein shake and 2 cups of vegetables a day. I know it's only the 3rd day but I haven't lost any weight since I started. Has this happened to anyone else? Am I doing something wrong?

Love the Premier Protein. Tastes like chocolate milk. -
Howdy neighbor! *waves* I'm in WV as well, my surgery is next month at WVU Hospital. I'm also opting for the sleeve, I think it will suit me better. I can't speak to quitting smoking except to say good luck, they say it's tough but so worth it in the end. The clearances and tests you'll go through usually depend on what your insurance requires and what's the "norm" for your surgical program; mine is 6 months of nutrition class, cardio testing, pulmonary testing, psych eval, letter from my PCP, and endoscopy. One more class to go! I'm relatively new to this forum as well but I've found it a wonderful source of information and support, and I think you will too. You can edit your profile from the main webpage, that's how I do it, I don't think there's an option for that on the app. And "stickies" are forum posts that are permanently set at the top of the page so they're easier to find, usually FAQs or necessary information. Hope that helps, and welcome!

I guess it comes down to weighing the pros and cons. It can be a scary choice just because it's such a HUGE choice. But you know what's right for you and how to get there. I was a major sweet-eater before the band. I was also afraid I wouldn't be able to kick that habit. But once you are properly restricted and you make sure to eat your regular balanced meals (Protein first, veggies next, then fruit or multi-grains), there really isn't room for much else! And really, because I've made myself stay away from sweet stuff for the most part, I can't handle sweet stuff as well as I used to. It makes me ill if I eat too much. The NP at my Dr's office also mentioned to me that as you lose a bunch of weight, your taste buds can change which can include making sweets taste TOO sweet. It's an adjustment, but you can do this. And you will be AMAZED at what you are capable of doing when you have such a powerful ally on your side!
