    just banded

Hello All! I'm Nanster. I was banded by Dr. Spivak 6 days ago in Houston, TX. The surgery itself was not so bad, but I was unaware of how "SICK" I would feel as I "detox'd" from my old way of eating. I planned to be banded Friday and return to work Monday...they told me "no problem"....WRONG....I felt like CRAPOLA for several days.:sick Each day has gotten a little better, thank the Lord. I guess my body has just been "crashing" from the reduction in calories, the lack of caffeine, the fact that my tissues were healing, etc. etc. I just wish I had been more aware that this was going to occur, rather than expecting "no big deal" for an outpatient procedure as was projected to me by the doctor, the surgery center staff and other "losers" I've met. Perhaps it's all my fault for not having gone to a low-calorie, no-caffeine diet ahead of time, but I was primarily told to go off "whites"-flour, sugar, Pasta, rice, potatoes. I'm having difficulty getting enough calories in right now. I'm "full" before I even start!!! I don't have ANY desire to eat and feel full with an "empty" stomach. I have to push to drink Water, broth, soup. I tried some grits this morning...only ate about 4 tsps full, over the course of 1/2 an hour and they felt like a huge rock in my gut for 2-3 hours!!!! I finally laid down and they passed while I napped. The rest of today, I've been having only liquids...ensure, Boost, Atkins shake, water, tea, and a little no-sugar-added applesauce. I assume from the majority of posts that I'll actually be one of the "lucky" ones in the future, as I will be able to put off a fill for a while since I feel full ALL THE TIME! Is that a correct assumption? I have actually lost 8 pounds in 6 days, which I feel is TOO much - not that I don't like seeing it on the scale - for such a short time. I think that is a further indication that my body is really "crashing" and that's why I have felt so poor so far. Does anyone have any suggestions for a "newbie"???:biggrin1: I am taking tomorrow off work-make it an even week! I need to get my home back in order and try to catch up on my bills, etc. and used to functioning on all liquids. I still have shakes and sweat constantly....any idea on how long these things will last?????? Am I almost past the "detox" stage??? (I hope, I hope) Thanks for your replies!!! Nanster

    Frustration!

Seems to me that you are right on track.... Don't use the scale so much..It is your enemy. You are geared to lose weight so it will happen when your body allows it...Try to up the Protein a little more so that you won't have too bad of an issue with hair loss. The small amount of calories can and will make your body believe it is in distress and it will protect itself.
  3. I was banded on the same day as u and I've lost 19 since surg and 25 total! I think you are doing awsome, i wish I were 10 more lbs along! lol increase your calories, that helped me when I was at a stall! congrats on your awsome progress and keep up the good work! amy
  4. Thanks everyone for responding. I will start to track and increase my calories. I am always so worried that I am eating to much. I will give you guys an update soon. THANKS!!
  5. I really don't keep track of my calories. My doctor said I should focus on Protein 60g. However, I don't really keep in track of that either. Sometimes I take protein shots. I guess I will have to start tracking my calories as well. Thanks for you advice.

What's your diet like after your pouch heals?

I was 600-800 calories until I hit goal (just over 6 months). I'm still trying to figure out maintenance (almost 8 months) but right now 1100 calories has me holding at 120.25 pounds (5'3", age 61, moderately active). Daily menu through weight loss and now - I added more Protein via more Snacks to add calories: Breakfast: 1/4 C eggbeater plus 1/4 C cottage cheese plus chopped roasted tomatoes/chilis Lunch: 2 oz tuna plus pickles plus small amount of mayo with 1/2 C cottage cheese Dinner: 3 oz meat plus low-carb vegetables (whatever will fit) Snacks: (number depended on point I was at) Quest Sour Cream and Onion chips, low-fat cheese sticks, cheddar cheese, cottage cheese, Quest Protein Bars (basically a dessert for me now), almonds, deli turkey

What's your diet like after your pouch heals?

    1. Weight loss phase: I stayed under 800 calories for the first six months, then under 1100 calories from six months to goal. During weight loss, I was not permitted grains, starchy veggies, tropical fruits, sweets, or liquids with calories other than protein shakes. My meals were 3 small meals per day plus only protein shakes for snacks. A sample menu might be: breakfast: steak and pickle relish wrapped in romaine lettuce. Lunch: tuna salad and a couple of prunes. Dinner: scrambled egg with avocado and melted cheese. Snacks: 2-3 protein shakes. 2. Maintenance phase: I typically stay under 1600 calories. My meals are a little bigger and I do have "real" snacks. I also allow myself one serving of whole grains daily, but I still avoid starchy veggies, tropical fruits, sweets, and liquid calories -- except on very special occasions, such as Christmas. Then, all bets are off! Sample menu: breakfast: hot oat bran cereal with toasted almonds, almond butter, and cashew milk. Lunch: chicken breast and grilled asparagus salad with light champagne vinaigrette dressing. Dinner: baked salmon topped with an egg, roast cauliflower. Snacks: low cal hot cocoa, Greek yogurt, small apple, dried apricots, turkey jerky. I have lost over 200 lbs and am maintaining at a healthy weight. I continue to watch what I eat very carefully. PS this is just an aside and it is a small matter, but none of us sleevers have "pouches." That's what RNY people have. You can accurately call your stomach a stomach, or a sleeve, or a sleeved stomach, but not a pouch. Good luck to you!

    Wth?

Are you keeping an actual food journal to log the breakdown of your calories/fats/carbs/protein? Sounds like you are getting in an OK amount of Protein, but might need more. At 6 weeks you should be aiming to get 80-90g at a minimum. And it's good if you can get half of that in before mid-day, rather than lumping it all in the afternoon. If you can, mix up what you're eating rather than eating the same thing more than twice a day. Are you logging your fluids as well, 64oz or more per day? How much are you exercising? It might be time to bump it up a little, like 10% more. More than likely it's just a stall. The human body is not a perfectly tuned machine and can have it's quirks. Be patient, I'm sure it will break soon!!

Stall? Same weight down to the oz.

Welcome to the wonderful world of stalls. Like @@Tammylb said, they happen....regularly. Even when going through one, your body can change. I got stuck for almost three weeks at the same weight. During that time, my body shifted and I lost quite a few inches. Then one day, the scale started to move again and pounds started coming off. Just stick to your program and drink lots of water! Some people even suggest upping your calories so your body doesn't think it's starving. Good luck and best wishes!!!

    Restriction luck

Jenna, don't be hard on yourself!! For cripes sake, girl, you're only starting this mission. You haven't even gotten out of the gate and you're thinking you're a failure?!? No way, no how. If you want to do anything now, try just concentrating on eating the Protein first, and having it at every meal. That one little change will help you feel full longer for way fewer calories than Pasta and bread. You'll be amazed, it really does work. And once you have some restriction you'll have the help you need with portion control. Patience is called for here, not self-recrimination!

  12. Good morning! This is my first post here. Just a short background that might help you understand my predicament. I am 27 years old and currently weigh 339 lbs. I have Insulin Resistant PCOS but otherwise am fairly healthy besides my weight. I decided in May that I wanted to get banded. I went into my PCP to discuss it with her and she suggested I give weight loss one more hard shot before going under the knife. I agreed and gave myself 4 months to lose weight. I have lost 29 lbs since the end of May and reduced my BMI to 55.1. (I started at 368 with a BMI of 55.9) I have been seeing a dietician, cut out all soda and sugars and am trying to follow a diabetic diet (because of the PCOS). I just recently added 3 days a week at the gym with a personal trainer. The weight is coming off SLOW... but it is coming off. I still have a LONG way to go... I want to lose another 162lbs. So now my dilemma is, do I forget about the band because of my recent success? I still feel like it will help me, specially since I have SO much to lose. I have hunger issues throughout the night that I fight with Water or a small 100 calorie snack. I feel like the band would help reduce the between meal hunger.... problem is I am not sure if that reason is enough anymore? I also feel like the band will help get my PCOS in control, and eventually my husband and I could have a child. (previous attempts have failed due to the PCOS and weight) This is a HUGE reason for me. Also in the back of my mind I keep expecting myself to fail. I have never been this successful with weigh loss before. Usually I struggle to lose a few pounds and give up easily. I think this time it stuck a little better because I was determined to give it my all before surgery. So I am really not sure what to do. I have been thinking about WLS for a long time, when I heard about the band I knew this was my answer.... now I am not sure anymore. :straight Can anyone relate? Give me some advise? If anything I KNOW I can live the post-op life. I have been for 5 months. I went to an informational seminar required by my surgeon... but I doubt I will get an honest answer from them. They want to make $$ off of me so I know they will of course tell me I should have it. :straight

    Getting Sleeved with a baby...

I had a four months old at the time and she was fully breastfeeding. My husband fed her bottles while I was away and once I came home I continued breastfeeding her and all was/is fine. I have a very good supply of milk even with the few calories I consume. Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App

    Fills vs willpower?

How about Fill-power? I will remember to argue with my dr. if he refuses to give me a fill. Even with restriction, it takes will power to stay away from milk shakes, ice cream, etc. because they just feel so much better going down. I had to force myself to get into the mindset that the purpose of the band is to limit my intake of calories by providing restriction. Therfore, if I consume too many calories on soft mushies, I'm defeating the purpose of the band. My point is...it takes both fills and will power to make it through this journey.

    2.5 Weeks Out

I stalled for 2 weeks, and then lost 6 lbs since then. Stalls happen for all of us. Just stick to your plan. It is practically impossible to gain weight on the amount of calories we are eating.
  16. I have tried every weight loss method, diet, plan, doctor....anything to lose weight. I am a 32 year old female and I have been over 200 lbs since middle school. I have been banded for 2 weeks and am patiently waiting on my first fill (my doctor won't fill for the first 4 weeks for healing). I am hungry, but I can already see the tremendous difference in my ability to discern the right portion sizes. I am calorie counting so that I don't over eat with an unfilled band. I welcome any suggestions for the future, any success stories, any information at all!

Determined to Lose Weight on Vacation

Well, I'm 3 days in to my vacation, and so far I'm doing well. I have no idea what the scale says, but I'm eating right. We are getting a lot of exercise in with all the walking and swimming, and I'm drinking a ton of Water to stay hydrated. So far, I've stayed around 1100 calories a day. The "provisions" I brought have been a life saver, along with my Protein bullets. I did have three small bites of carrot cake, but that's as bad as I've been. I should be on track for my 2 pounds lost by the end of my vacation if I keep it up. And if I haven't lost 2 pounds, I don't even care...I'm just proud of myself for sticking with the plan so far. Kiki, good luck on vacation. If I can stick to it, so can you! Thanks for your encouraging words NukeChik!

    Protein bullets?? Help

Have you tried Isopure? It comes in 20 oz bottles (in the health food seciton of grocery stores) but packs a whopping 40 grams of protein with zero calories. I drink one a day on the way home from work and it really helps me. Good luck.

Determined to Lose Weight on Vacation

I think you have a great attitude auntlucy! Its great to see a bandster like you :tongue_smilie:. I recently went on vacation, I wasn't quite as good as I had hope to be, but still pretty good. I did eat a little too many sweets, but did much better on the exercise and drinking of "empty calories" (i.e. frozen drinks!!! :tt1:)

5Th Weigh In And App To Try-

I weighed in 2 days ago and Im at a high 237.8. Just barely made it to 237. I really need to get better at changing my portion size. Ive even experianced some stuck food several times and it hasnt stopped me from changing my portion size. I will say, though, that I found this app where you take a picture of your food and it logs it for you so that you can be realistic about what and how much you eat. Its called the Slow Carb Diet app and its available for Android and Iphones. You can type in a description as well. Its not magically going to calculate calories, carbs or portion size, so you have to be honest in the description box. Its easy for me because I do carry my phone everywhere I go and It has helped me be honest with what ive been eating. I noticed it has helped me cut out my snacking (almonds) especially at work. Im struggling to make it to 2lbs a week. I have a fill appointment next Tuesday and Im hoping to jump off from that fill again. I would love to see 230 by Labor Day! Also bought a kettleball to work out with and I am AMAZED at the heart rate you get going when swinging that around! I still have the pain in my calf from my Zumba debacle. It was a little stronger yesterday for some weird reason. I start a new shift for the next 6 months on September 6th. Its still 4 10 hour shifts, my days off are different and I will be starting work 1 hour later and leaving later. The good news is that it will allow me to have more time to take classes before work without taking time away from my family. Already scheduling those days. Stay motivated- see you soon!!!

    Popcorn!

I can't believe it...Yesterday I had popcorn for the second time and it acted like a slider food to me....I could have eaten it for hours.....Yes I suppose it has Fiber and low in calories....But dang.....It just did not fill me up!!! Anyone else find this to be a slider food?
  22. Your body has reached its new set point. Losing more weight will be as difficult as losing weight preop, and as difficult to maintain that loss. Others have discovered that (for example), to maintain 130lbs, they had to eat 1100 calories a day. To maintain 150lbs, they could eat 1800-2000 (they were also exercising). So, you need to decide how important those last 20lbs are to you. You'll have to restrict your calories and exercise more to burn them off, then figure out how to eat/exercise to maintain.

    trying to do right!

I am very healthy and I eat right, I kind of trust my nut and that is why I am wondering what an average intake would be if I can't get 90, it isn't so much the weight loss as it is the feeling I have during the days when I get the protein. I am in my 8th week and I do not want to lose any muscle. I am a elementary teacher and I have an active life style, less since surgery because my nut said since I am only getting 600-800 calories I shouldn't burn more then 250-300. I want to get there but if I can't how much until I am totally unhealthy?
  24. ReadyforChangeChan

10 months out and stalled for first time.

I see alot of people say that if you work out alot you need to up your calories-sorry I cant be much help as im just getting started.
  25. I can't blame you for being frustrated! I agree with the other posters that you should food journal and see if you can get an accurate picture of how many calories you are taking in. Start there and see if there is anything that can be changed there. Also, have you ever considered using a bodybugg? I have one and am loving it. It tracks how many calories I burn and I journal everything so I can always make sure I have a calorie deficit. Best wishes to you.... I hope the scale starts moving for you soon.
