    Sleeve to RNY

I had a revision in October 2020 for GERD. Unfortunately, I'm one of the people who "dumps". It's like clockwork - I eat something with high sugar (cake, cookies, candy) and 2-3 hours later I'm bloated, very gassy and the diarrhea starts. I've never experienced any dumping with artificial sweeteners. The good news is, I know what causes it, and it's all my fault! I shouldn't eat that stuff as it has no nutritional value. My surgeon told me that I should learn from my mistakes! Classic conditioning sort of thing...… you eat the wrong stuff, you end up dumping. I'm almost 4 months post op, and I'm trying to change my relationship with sweets so I can maintain my weight loss. The great news is that the GERD is GONE!!!!! I can actually sleep through the night, don't have to suck on a cough drop and eat handfuls of antacids every night and I feel wonderful.

    On the fence

Hi there! So obviously, I can't tell you what to do I was wondering, however: are you at a stable weight? Is your health declining, or has it been this way for a while? If you're gradually going up in weight and you're feeling the side effects of that escalating, I'd definitely consider the surgery if I were in your situation. In terms of how it works, it's pretty accepted now that the main effect from any WLS other than the lap-band is metabolic. That means it's not the restriction or the malabsorption or the combination that does most of the work. It's the change in our GI hormones. And speaking of those: I'd suggest you look into comorbidity resolution with the different procedures. It seems the resolution rates are higher for procedures that bypass some of your small intestine. Since you're self-paid anyway, have you considered the Mini Gastric Bypass? It's revisable and reversable and offers higher resolution of comorbidities than both the sleeve and RNY.

    Sleeve to RNY

lots of people have revised, so some may chime in here. It usually does resolve GERD (although not always -- tracyringo, who's on here, hasn't seen any improvement yet, unfortunately) - but for most people, yes - it stops it. most RNY'ers don't dump (the statistic that gets thrown around a lot is 30% of us dump, although I don't know if there's any hardcore medical research behind that number. However, I've been on bariatric boards for the last six years, and I know a lot of us don't dump - so that number doesn't surprise me. And no - you don't dump on Splenda or other artificial sweeteners. Just sugar - and for some people, fats (although I should add that some artificial sweeteners, esp sugar alcohols, give some people G/I distress - but that's true of normal people, too - not just WLS patients). weight loss supposedly isn't as fast or easy with revisions as it is with virgin surgeries, but some people do manage to make their goal.
  4. Hi all, I had the sleeve around 2 years ago and now, because of GERD, I need a revision and am scheduled for the 24th. I also gained back around half of the weight I lost. According to my doctor, (new surgeon) my former surgeon took about 50% of my stomach when the norm is about 70-90%. I never did reach my goal and was frustrated. I am curious if anyone has experienced anything similar and if they were able to reach their goal with revision. Also, with regards to dumping: does it also happen with Splenda and the like?
  5. I'm planning to get a revision from lap band to sleeve soon. How was the pain for the sleeve compared to the lap band? Do you think because you had experience that it made any difference?
  6. I am interested in revising to this from the sleeve too. Where are u having your surgery?

    Any Bypassers in their 20s?

Congrats on starting your journey. I am a sleeve to bypass revision. I had my sleeve originally in early 2017 and revision to bypass in December 2020. I’m currently 28 years old now. Since my revision in December I’ve lost lost 20 kg which I’m so happy about. I’m so looking forward to buying new clothes, being able to walk into any shop and know that I’ll be able to find my size, rather then sticking to plus size stores etc. also in regaining my confidence - which is increasing every day :) All the best for your journey. No regrets!

    Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?

    Acid reflux

Has your Gerd/Reflux cleared up? I had revision surgery in May and still have Gerd and am still on my PPI !!!
  10. I am 3.5 weeks out from a band to sleeve revision, and things have been going pretty typically up until now. I had GERD prior to this surgery, a fact I made abundantly clear to my surgeon, but at no time was I apprised that the sleeve would make it worse. And by worse, I mean that I cannot eat much of anything without it causing vomiting, and when my stomach is empty, it burns severely. I’m afraid I’ll be forced to eat Cream of Chicken soup for the rest of my life, because it’s all I can tolerate. The vitamins, proteins...everything that’s supposed to help with energy, is intolerable. I’m miserable, because I’m in agony, so not only does it seem that I have changed my entire lifestyle, but now I’m sick and have no energy all the time. There is no joy at all in the weight loss. I take 2 Prilosecs per day, and a handful of Tums, but there’s no relief. When I call the nurse at my surgeon’s office, it takes a day for her to get back to me, with no helpful suggestions. I am miserable and almost dysfunctional. Has anyone else had this dyspepsia this severe? What did you do?
  11. Can anyone tell me how much out-of-pocket they paid for a revision surgery with BCBS federal standard? I Just need to know how much the hospital stay cost you and the surgery itself not all the other appointments

    Sleeve vs bypass

So I had the sleeve first in 2013 and it worked well for me. I lost over 100 pounds but about 4-5 years post op I gained most of my weight back and started having significant GERD which I never had before. I recently had a revision to Gastric Bypass and my reflux is gone and I am losing weight again. From personal experience if you have any issues with reflux I would go with the By pass

    December 2020

Hi All, I am new to this thread and was glad to read everyone’s stories and victories. Congrats All. As for me, I got my bypass done on 12/23/20. It was a revision from sleeve which was done in 2017. Had to get bypass surgery for gerd as well as weight loss. In past 8 weeks now, my gerd is improved, but I have lost only 14lbs of weight. I wanted to ask if this is normal. Is there anything that I should be doing to increase my weight loss. Please advice. I am really disheartened at this stage.

    Is duodenal switch too drastic?

I just had the SADI-s (single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy) done a week ago. This is the revised version of the traditional DS. I did so much research and chose this over the RNY (my surgeon didn't even suggest this for me) and the VSG. I am starting at a very high weight (420 at my pre-op appointmnent with the surgeon and 412 at day of surgery which was 2 weeks later). In addition to my high weight and BMI (I hate using BMI because it's not a good indicator of healthy weight AT ALL) I have PCOS, sleep apnea, and hypertension. Knowing that this procedure will basically reverse all of my comorbidities AND help me lose a higher percentage of excess weight AND keep it off is why I chose the SADI-s. I could have just chosen the VSG first and see how I did with that surgery, but I don't see the point in that. There's a higher chance I could just regain the weight I lost and need the revision surgery anyways. I'd much rather just get the surgery that I know will provide me better results the first go round. I'm hoping to see some serious transformation in the next 18 months. I'm really looking forward to getting more mobility back and having more energy. It's the little things I'm excited for....being able to take a bath because I fit comfortably in the tub and can get out easily...taking my dogs for longer walks...being able to bend down and tie my shoes easily...going to a concert and being able to stand and dance for hours without pain or needing to sit down...not having to deal with the anxiety of flying and needing an extra seat....not using a seatbelt extender...sitting in booths at restaurants...having more clothing options... Long story short...do the research, listen to your surgeon's advice, and make the best decision for yourself when considering the long term.

VSG to RNY still have GERD

Did you revise to RNY because of the GERD ?

    Hypothyroidism and gastric bypass surgery

Well, mine’s been complicated. My revision (8/2020) was mostly for the hiatal hernia of almost my entire sleeve that gave me constant hiccups. Then I had an internal hernia repair 11/2020 and then a small bowel resection 12/26/2020. But since my revision I’ve gone from 212 to my goal of 155. Mostly because hernia repair and bowel resection recovery follow the same diet as post op WLS- liquids to soft then solids as tolerated. I just had an EGD today to make sure everything looked good and I’m cleared for whatever I can tolerate as long as I chew well.
  17. So it been almost 9 months since my revision to RNY from VSG. I had erosive esophagitis D and as of this past Dec it has gone down to an A. I still take Dexilant 60 mg and as I sit here typing I am on fire !!! Just wondering if anyone else is still going through this after being revised. I take the strongest PPI available that I am aware of but I shouldnt have to be on this PPI after the revision but here I am !
  18. Starwarsandcupcakes, my med bottle says the same. How has you weight loss been since your revision? @maven, have you had your surgery already very? All of our stories are similar in ways!

    Hypothyroidism and gastric bypass surgery

It’s not just calcium and iron you need to watch for with the 4hr window. You also need to watch out for acid reducing medicine as well or at least that’s what my prescription bottle of levo says. I was sleeved 12/17/19 and then revised 8/11/20 for gerd. In the time between I did stall for almost 6 weeks which was frustrating but I eventually started losing again. Also, the closer I got to my goal weight the slower I lost.
  20. I just had be revision this morning ing from Sleeve to RYNbypass. He also fixed a hiatal hernia. I am walking amd sitting in chair, no drain but omg the headache I would when I got out of Anesthesia wasddeadle, started in neck and took over full head. They have only given me Tylenol and to radial for ( like super inprofen) pain since I woke up from surgery. It has been 4.5 hours now amd I am worried that pain will hit me and I will not be prepared, they said they will give me morphine pill if pain gets bad. What should I do?? Headache is killing me. They did give me zophrane for naseau so I am goood there. They said I will be discharge at 11am unless something occurs. Oh and they just took my blood sugars and it is 179 so they have to give me insulin but I am not a diabetic???? So confused???? HW 324 Lowest 159 Current 229 Goal 154

    Regain 2 years out

  23. Anyone know of a reputable surgeon in the Raleigh area. Original surgery was completed in NJ in 2014
  24. Please bear with me while I ramble and get something off my chest. I started this journey with a gastric sleeve surgery July 2019 things went bad quickly I was vommitting uncontrollably and very rapid weight loss I started losing my mind and had little to no muscle control by September. After a severe fall I was put into a rehab hospital and they decided to change the sleeve to a bypass. The revision was done 2/2020. After the revision I was discharged to my home. I’ve started regaining memories and muscle control. By June 2020 I was able to walk independently (with a walker for balance) by September I was able to forgo the walker unless it was long distances. Even with this crazy pandemic I’ve been pretty upbeat and happy I am literally half the size I was when I started this weight loss journey. Yesterday I went to my obgyn appointment they were complimentary and saying how I don’t even look like the same person. Then I got my after office report. I always read over them in case there is something I forgot or missed. The first line goes this is an obese female.... damn I’ve seen that word with ever dr appointment for more than 30 years but it has never bothered me like it is this time. I mean I’m literally half the person I was before and almost died to get to where I am now what else do I have to do to get rid of that word?
