    Scared I will fail

Yeah, it makes me so mad that people criticize us for being overweight, then shame us for getting surgery! That's why I'm gonna wear any loose skin I have with pride until I decide to fix it or not. You can't win with some people! Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Scared I will fail

I can relate to most of your fears. I was 54 when I had my surgery. I also worried that the surgery would not work for me, that I'd fail, that it would end up just like every other attempt to lose weight. But my outcome was a happy surprise. Regarding cravings, the surgery did not eliminate, but seriously dampened the intensity of my cravings. It's much easier to tell myself "no". Actually since I am in maintenance now, it's more like "not right now". Because I do indulge in a treat now and then, since I'm no longer actively trying to lose. I know the surgery doesn't have that effect on everyone, but it did for me. Surgery also completely defanged my hunger. Yeah, I do get hungry if I go too long without eating, but it's not that raging, insatiable hunger I had before surgery. I'm just aware that I need to eat, but I can delay it if I have to. It's a really different experience. When it comes to loose skin, I have a LOT. I'm scheduled for plastic surgery this summer to have a tummy tuck since that's where most of my extra skin is. Here's a recent picture of me - when clothed, the loose skin is not noticeable. But there's enough of it that I have to buy a whole size bigger to accommodate the stomach! Obviously, there's some stuff I don't wear, but any 56 year-old can say that, LOL. Honestly, I do look a little older since losing all the weight (my neck especially) but I wouldn't go back to being 250 pounds for anything. Only you can decide if surgery is right for you, but hopefully, our experiences will help.
  3. Thank you for sharing. It is reassuring to know I can hide the loose skin. People criticize overweight people, then criticize their decision to do something about it! Then criticize their bodies afterwards. It is all so sad. Sent from my SM-G781U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Scared I will fail

If I could figure out how to get my pics to post on here I'd show you a pick of me in clothes. Just like Catwoman, you can't really notice it when I'm in clothes. Sure, it will be visible when I wear a swimming suit, but I don't care. I'm going to Florida June 5th and I'm gonna be prancing around confidently in my swimming suit, loose skin and all, with confidence. I don't care what anyone thinks. The loose skin just shows how hard I have worked and it's not longer filled with fat! Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Scared I will fail

I agree with all the others. I wish I hadn't been so scared of the surgery and had it 10 or 20 years before I actually did. I felt like I was just existing rather than fully living for all those years. I would do this again in a heartbeat. In fact, I'd do it every year if I had to. There are a lot of food restrictions early out, but after that first year, no. I can eat most of the same things I did before, I just eat a lot less of them now. And we're not talking a couple of tablespoons (although that's the case the first month or so after surgery) - now I eat like a lot of my never-been-obese women friends do. For example, when I go out, I'll have an appetizer - or I'll order an entree and take half of it home. Honestly, a lot of never-been-fat people eat that way, especially women. Watch some of them sometime. you can always work with a therapist on your sugar addiction if you think that would help. A lot of WLS patients work with therapists on their food issues and have found it helpful. finally, I lost over 200 lbs and had a TON of loose skin. However, it was very easy to hide in clothes. No one knew it was there except for me (well, and my husband and doctor, of course). I've since had it removed, but here is a picture of me BEFORE I had plastic surgery. See the loose skin? Trust me, it's there. Especially my gut. Like someone else said, I would take the loose skin any day over weighing 373 lbs again. ANY DAY!! oh - and you're not too old at all for WLS. Lots of us have it in our 50s and 60s - and a few even in our 70s. I had it at 55. I'm probably 58 in this picture.

    Scared I will fail

Hi, I completely understand how you feel. I recently got approved last Thursday and have had several thoughts to myself wondering if I can do it? Is it realistic of me to continue this lifestyle after the surgery? Then I get a little nervous because technically they give you these therapy sessions to help you discuss these types of fears and anxiety yet, I'm too afraid to talk to them and have them think I'm not ready for this new journey. I can also relate to the saggy skin! However, would I prefer saggy skin instead of knee pain, avoiding social places, not having clothes that fit, and not being able to keep up with my 4-year-old son when he wants to play. All in all, I think it's normal for us to be worried but I'm also trying to believe in myself that I CAN DO THIS! We're only human so we have temptations and may even give in but I think the first step is believing that we can do this and that we deserve to finally live a happy and healthy life. You got this!

    Scared I will fail

Oh, and yeah, I have loose skin. My stomach was really big at 393 pounds so I have it there and my thighs are pretty bad too. My arms have always been small for my size so they don't have much. My face got pretty huge at my high weight, but so far it's not looking too bad. I have some loose skin on my neck, and notice some lines around my eyes I didn't have before, but overall people still don't think I'm almost 50. And I will take ALL of this any day over the way I was before. I feel so much better and life is so much easier now it is worth any loose skin or looking a bit older than I did. And there's always plastic surgery if it really bothers me. Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Scared I will fail

I went partially through the approval process at 40 and then chickened out. I wish I wouldn’t have. My only regret is not having surgery sooner. I finally went through with it at 49. Yes, I ended up with loose skin. Plastic surgery took care of all of it (and oh man, do I love my perky boobs). I’m fit, healthy, and love how I look now. I enjoy eating thoroughly. Just smaller amounts. I also am a big sugar fan. That has lessened somewhat post op, but I still fit small treats in to my plan and am satisfied with much, much less. For example, a dark chocolate/caramel/sea salt bar that has eight segments lasts me eight days. I savor each one in the evening, letting it melt slowly in my mouth rather than chewing it with hardly tasting it. I truly feel like this surgery is my second chance, I’ll be around and be healthy to enjoy my kids and grand kids and fully participate in life. Best of luck to you!
  9. Hello. I went through the entire process and had a surgery date in 2016. I got scared and backed out. Now I am older, heavier and have the same fears. I am 48, have diabetes and had a hysterectomy. I am scared that I will fail. I am scared I will not lose weight because of my age and the hysterectomy. Scared of my sugar cravings. I am scared because of the diet. If I can't eat the right foods now, how will I be able to do it after the surgery? I beat myself up everyday because I give in to my sweet tooth. It is truly a sugar addiction and I don't know how to beat it. I am sad thinking that I won't be able to really enjoy eating ever again. I keep thinking, if I put my body through this, only to gain the weight back in 5 yrs, then I have all of my old issues with weight plus the stomach restriction. Deep down, I feel that when I lose weight and start exercising I will be proud and determined to never go back to my old ways. But my fears and anxiety are working against me. I am scared of loose skin, particularly a sagging face. I have managed to maintain a youthful complexion with minor aging, and being overweight, that is the one thing I feel good about myself with. I know that I would rather be healthy for my 9 yr old son than looking older, but I do not want to look 10 yrs older either! I hope I am exaggerating the severity of it. I would love some advice and words of encouragement. Thank you for listening to me.

    Lady parts/large mons

You will probably lose volume in that area (and all over) after WLS. That does unfortunately seem to always translate to some degree of loose skin. However a mons lift/reduction during plastics can fix it so don’t worry about it too much.

    Food Before and After Photos

I light candles when cooking fish. No odors after. I also like crispy fish skin if I scale it properly and on whole fish (head and all)
  12. I’m glad i’m not the only one who doesn’t notice any scallop smell!! I started thinking I had a nose disability or something. Scallops smell like nothing but DELICIOUS to me. But...i love fish skin...though only when its crispy/charred. I may be a real minority on this one. When I was still eating rice, salmon skin hand rolls was one of my faves to order at Japanese restaurants. Oh and did I mention fish skin chips? Yum. Sorry if this makes some of you gag. Lololozzzz.

    Lady parts/large mons

Hello, I am just starting this process and I’ve looked through a ton of pages (not all cause I just started) and haven’t seen this asked really so wanted to throw it out there right now my mons pubis is very large and protruding and heavy. I’ve never seen another body like mine even in all the BoPo movement and such on social. So I’m curious... has anyone had that before surgery and after is shrinks? I’m not worried about loose skin, I know I’ll need plastics after since I already have loose skin now at 300+. I’m just worried that I’ll lose weight and that it’ll stick out more and be more noticeable if it doesn’t lose weight too. like I already can’t wear leggings or tight jeans because it looks like I’m packing junk. My legs have always been athletic so I think that doesn’t help in making it more obvious. any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated!!!

I love scallops too but have never noticed any odour. Maybe I subconsciously block it cause I love them so much. 😆 All fish skin is awful to me. I’m always peeling it off before or after cooking. Congrats on the success of the salmon poaching @GreenTealael.

Depending on what you have done you will need stronger pain meds than Tylenol. I cannot take opioids for more than a day or two. I hate the feeling and it makes me itch constantly. Any muscle work will be more painful than just skin work. Do not let this deter you. Speak to a good surgeon. He will give you options.
  16. I had my RNY on April 8 and everything has been going well. The only thing I've dumped on was a little bit of a chicken skin (and I think I may have been eating too fast at that dinner, it was our first time hosting a dinner since my surgery and I was excited!). Anyways, in a week or two, my work is having a pizza party, and I was wondering when other people found they could tolerate pizza. I don't want to dump or have to leave work early because I ate something I shouldn't have, but I'd also love to have half a slice if it's not going to bother me too much. I'm also going to be sending my nutritionist this question, but I thought I'd check with some people's personal experience in this as well. (For the record, I am also absolutely fine bringing my lunch. I haven't had much in the way of cravings and don't feel the need to eat pizza if it won't sit well, it's more about participating in the group activity I think).

I have never poached salmon in milk (immediately added to list of things to try). This salmon was poached in dry white wine and lemon juice with capers and dill. I usually bake or cedar plank my salmon to avoid the lingering fish smell, but poaching is another good option. Husband no longer lets me sear scallops in the house because of the smell. I have to use the burner on the outdoor grill. P.S. I always have the skin removed prior to cooking to reduce the oil in the fish. Also, I hate the flavor of salmon skin.

Lying about not getting surgery is awful

I really think that it takes a lot of strength to go either way. I have mostly been straight with mine different groups and they have told me how wonderful it’s been for someone they know. I have had the unique experience of having renal cancer surgery to take out part of my kidney and then by bypass. With mental illness obesity and height -there is still shame and stigma. Anyone who says it a cheat or a quick fix -I immediately ask them how they came to that conclusion considering it makes life very different for the person who gets surgery, that their digestive system is rerouted and that success demands a significant change in lifestyle. I tell them I am very interested in knowing their why? Usually gets the point across. I learned a long time ago to just flat out lie about depression and anxiety because you would be treated more kindly if you said you had cancer, after having both simultaneously I can say this is true. I love when bigger people are happy in their own skin and it doesn’t cause them health issues or body image issues as long as we are not glorifying either extreme is what I’m after. How about we glorify normally average ?

Stats for petite people! I’m 5’0 with BMI 40

First of all welcome to the journey!! I had VSG. I am currently 4 weeks post op! I am 5’2 and started out also with a 40 BMI and at 231lbs. I am now currently 200. The 31lb weight loss is noticeable in my face and you can definitely tell with the way my shirts fit now. Everything is slimming in a downward motion - my face, neck and bust line were noticeably smaller in week 2. My torso is very short, so my stomach is slimmer, but the skin flap is still there. I’m just now returning to work this week and will also be hitting the gym as well. So I’m hoping to tighten up this skin. Im so excited for you! Good luck!!
  20. [emoji38] That is so funny! Just today I was thinking I wish they could take some fat and loose skin off my fingers. My ring size has gone from a 10 to a 7.5, but I've always had this fat pad right below my knuckle, so it's hard to get a ring over that spot, because it's bigger than the spot where my rings sit, if that makes any sense. I need finger loose skin removal! [emoji23] Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. Fat stores all over your body including your fingers so as you lose weight you’ll lose it from your hands & fingers too. I’ve either resized some of my rings (most was an O down to an L & it fell off my finger last week 🙁) or wear them on other fingers. I even have looshish skin on my fingers so they look wrinkly - didn’t expect that. I’ve slathered on many, many tubes of hand creams promising all sorts of things but the only change is softer hands. I wonder if there’s plastic surgery for fingers?? 😆

    Too old for plastics?

It's really not their decision or their body. Personally, I feel like if I don't get the skin removal etc. that I'll be perpetually wearing (or keeping around) the equivalent of my old, fat clothes like I'm just waiting for myself to fit into them again rather than throwing them out and committing to a more healthy lifestyle. I'll likely get my plastics around age 42.

    Negative reactions to getting plastics.

Many years ago, I lost 50+ lbs and had lots of extra skin. I took my husband to the drs consult so he could hear the benefits. The biggest benefit besides not having skin on top of skin was I wanted to feel better about my body. Sometimes we aren't selfish (not a bad word) for ourselves. I was so busy taking care of others, I wasn't focusing on me. I made a list of pros and cons and then had a very adult conversation with those that mattered as to the why. I had full support after doing this process. Interestingly enough, one of our closest friends followed me as well in having surgery and we became each others support buddy. Ask the dr if he has anyone considering similar surgery from WLS and give your information to him/her to give to the person. Also, ask on her for a support buddy. This site is great for assistance. Once I am 18 months out, I will be looking at plastic surgery again.
  24. Hello I am close to being 9 months post op. I recently began discussing getting plastic surgery with my husband, and parents. They are all trying to talk me out of it. They think it isn't necessary because they think I do not have enough extra skin, I am too old (52 this yr.), I will be in too much pain, etc. I am getting frustrated with them, and won't talk to them about it anymore. I know its my body, and I can do what I want, but it would be nice if I had the support from them. What, if anything can I do to gain their support? Have any of you dealt with this before?

    Too old for plastics?

I am 65 years old. I started my journey at 55 years old. I weighed 320 when I started pre surgery weight loss. I have lost 145 and maintained a weight loss of 100 pounds, then a couple years ago I got back my mojo and relost the 45. I am still overweight. But I am HEALTHY. I move. I work full time. I eat healthfully and yes... I DO have skin hanging in places, and my belly could sure use it. But no more surgeries that are not medically necessary for me. Yes, a personal choice. And yes, if I had my arms done, I would probably lose 5 lbs off of each one !!! But no. I have had a few major surgeries in addition to my VSG and surgery is too hard on my body. And it is not covered by my health insurance. Absolutely not in the budget, now or ever. And I am kinda proud of the jiggling - reminds me how far I have come. To those who decide they want to, and understand that there are risks involved in every major surgery, can afford the expense, time off, have post op care options and have made an informed decision - great ! But not for this "senior".
