I had the sleeve early 2017. Due to GERD and weight regain I also had revision surgery to gastric bypass. My bypass revision was in dec 2020 and since then I’m down 20kg. (44 pounds) so very happy with my revision. Wishing you All the best!

Hiatus Hernia - Did removal help prevent acid reflux with sleeve surgery?
Blueslily posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, I'm a newbie. I completed four months of the required weight management for my insurance to approve the surgery. I am scheduled for surgery in early April. I had the EGD a few weeks ago for my surgeon to look to see if there are any issues in my esophagus or stomach before surgery. I had already mentioned to him that one month prior, I had started burping and was worried that I was developing acid reflux. Since that was the only symptom, he said it could be anything and that his practice is to fix any hernias that they see during the same WLS to help prevent acid reflux later. He said that if I have acid reflux, he would be able to see it during the EGD. So, I did the EGD and he said he saw a small hiatus hernia. He said for me not to worry that he would fix it during the sleeve surgery and that will prevent acid reflux. I had asked him should I choose the bypass versus the sleeve due to the possible acid reflux. He said that since he is going to fix the hernia, I can still go with the sleeve if that is my preference. My question is to those who had a sleeve surgery and the hiatus hernia fixed at the time of the sleeve surgery, did that indeed prevent acid reflux for you? I really dont want to have a sleeve surgery now and end up with bad reflux and then need to do a revision. I was very direct with the surgeon about not wanting to have a revision later. Thanks! -

not many surgeons will place lapbands anymore - too many people have had complications with them years after surgery and had to revise to sleeve or bypass. So I agree revising to something else is a better option for you. -

I had my sleeve done Dec 2015 and am scheduled to have a bypass revision in. So 2021 my sleeve failed me as well I am nervous excited how about you -
Welcome! I'm sorry you have to have a revision but I wish you a great outcome. At least you've been through this before, so you know the drill (although it's a different procedure, I know).

VSG to RNY still have GERD
Tracyringo replied to Tracyringo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So I had same experience. I thought I was cured the fist month or so and then bam !! I think we were so swollen from the surgeries. We didnt feel it until healed, at least that is what I feel happened with me. What was your last EGD like before the revision? I read where the roux limb may be too short in an article online, but I have no idea and none of it makes sense. -
VSG to RNY still have GERD
Tracyringo replied to Tracyringo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I would still get the revision because I had erosive esophagitis D. It has gone down to an A, so I shouldnt have to worry about getting cancer. I take 60mg Dexilant everyday plus carafate -
VSG to RNY still have GERD
BabyNewYear replied to Tracyringo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hey All, Interesting thread. I have constant heartburn and had a VSG in 2016. If you had it to do over would you still get the RNY revision? I am wondering if its worth it if you get the heartburn anyway and are still constantly taking the PPI's? -
Sleeve to RNY
dorkyfaerie replied to Plutonium's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had revision from sleeve to rny in September 2020 and have had zero GERD symptoms since surgery. I do dump with some sugar substitutes, but so far it seems limited specifically to sugar alcohols (xylitol, erythritol, sorbitol, etc.). Splenda and Stevia have been fine so far. -

I had my revision on Dec 14th. At first I thought it had definitely worked but the past few weeks the reflux is back with a vengeance. I’m at a loss as to why it’s still happening too. 🙄 -
How much weight did you lose the first 90 days ?
mae7365 replied to Tim C's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm a sleeve to bypass revision and I've lost 40 pounds since my bypass surgery on 10/29/20 (17 weeks post-op). Since my surgery was for GERD and not officially bariatric, I didn't have as much to lose to get to my goal weight. But I want to lose a few pounds more just to give myself some "wiggle" room once I'm past the honeymoon period. I know that weight gain is possible, and very likely probable, after the 1st year. I wasn't really prepared for maintenance after my sleeve surgery in 2014 and gained almost 50 lbs. in the 6 years following surgery. I want to be better prepared to maintain a normal weight since I've been given a second chance to truly change my relationship with food! -
5 days post op and feeling scared about the future
catwoman7 replied to pompom83's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'd stay away from FB groups - there are a lot of toxic ones out there, from what I hear. I've never bothered with them - there are much better sites for information, like this one. complications aren't all that common. And most people do NOT have revisions (some do because of severe GERD, but they're in the minority. The majority of VSG patients don't develop GERD, and for those who do, a lot of cases can be managed through medication. Leaks and stomach blockages are pretty rare. You're probably hearing about this because people who have complications are more likely to post about them than are people who've never had any. They're looking for support or advice. People who are two or five or ten years out who've never had any issues would have no reason to post about them. -
5 days post op and feeling scared about the future
Arabesque replied to pompom83's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congrats on your surgery. I’m glad you’re doing well. I don’t know what it is about FB groups but from what people say they seem to have a lot of negativity, worst case scenarios & not always sensible advice. Such a shame. I’m not quite 2 years out & I had stress & diet induced reflux/gerd before my sleeve surgery but it was pretty mild. Do I have it now? Yes, but it’s different & manageable. I was experiencing burning in my throat at night. My doctor advised not me to eat protein, liquid protein excluded, 2 hours before bed. And it worked. No more burning. Are there people who’ve had revision surgery because of gerd, yes. But there are also people who haven’t. There’s no guarantee how your body will react to your surgery in the short or long term. There’s certainly no guarantee you will need a revision. Just like there’s no certainty you will develop gall stones & need your gall bladder removed, also a possible side effect. It doesn’t happen to everyone either. Honestly, I have a few issues post surgery (low blood pressure, occasional hyperglycaemia) but my three friends who’ve had the surgery too have had no issues at all. As with all things, it’s sensible to be aware of all possibilities but also not to expect they will all happen to you. Good luck in your journey. So happy I did it. -
5 days post op and feeling scared about the future
pompom83 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello everyone, I am now 5 days post op. Thankfully, I have not had any complications and am able to drink liquids with no issues so far. I have been giving things a lot of thoughts and although all is going well now, I fear of complications in the long term. It seems from posts I read on FB groups that almost everyone will have a revision surgery due to acid reflux. I've also read of other complications such as leaks years post op or stomach blockages. I did my research before surgery, but now that I actually went ahead and had surgery, I feel like I'm gonna be on edge knowing that something bad due to VSG can happen down the line. Anyone here years post op with no major issues? I just need some re-assurance all will be ok. 😣 -
I also had a revision from sleeve(early 2017) to bypass (dec 2020) due to GERD and some weight regain. Happy to say that I no longer have GERD. I’m just over 10 weeks post op and I’ve lost 20kg. May be ‘slower’ then some but I’m so so happy with this progress. Slow and steady :)

Revision completed
dorkyfaerie replied to Tracyringo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
No vomiting for me either. Made the mistake of overeating twice and will never do it again. I also dump from sugar substitutes like erythritol and most dairy/dairy substitutes. I've always had an issue with milk, but holy moly has it gotten exponentially worse. I've also had to take it super slow on a bunch of different foods and am just now adding more raw veggies/salads in (at 5 months out). BUT, I still haven't had any GERD, which is the primary reason I had revision, and I've lost about 65 lbs since the week prior to revision, so I'm pretty happy with the results! -
I had a revision in October 2020 for GERD. Unfortunately, I'm one of the people who "dumps". It's like clockwork - I eat something with high sugar (cake, cookies, candy) and 2-3 hours later I'm bloated, very gassy and the diarrhea starts. I've never experienced any dumping with artificial sweeteners. The good news is, I know what causes it, and it's all my fault! I shouldn't eat that stuff as it has no nutritional value. My surgeon told me that I should learn from my mistakes! Classic conditioning sort of thing...… you eat the wrong stuff, you end up dumping. I'm almost 4 months post op, and I'm trying to change my relationship with sweets so I can maintain my weight loss. The great news is that the GERD is GONE!!!!! I can actually sleep through the night, don't have to suck on a cough drop and eat handfuls of antacids every night and I feel wonderful.

Hi there! So obviously, I can't tell you what to do I was wondering, however: are you at a stable weight? Is your health declining, or has it been this way for a while? If you're gradually going up in weight and you're feeling the side effects of that escalating, I'd definitely consider the surgery if I were in your situation. In terms of how it works, it's pretty accepted now that the main effect from any WLS other than the lap-band is metabolic. That means it's not the restriction or the malabsorption or the combination that does most of the work. It's the change in our GI hormones. And speaking of those: I'd suggest you look into comorbidity resolution with the different procedures. It seems the resolution rates are higher for procedures that bypass some of your small intestine. Since you're self-paid anyway, have you considered the Mini Gastric Bypass? It's revisable and reversable and offers higher resolution of comorbidities than both the sleeve and RNY.

lots of people have revised, so some may chime in here. It usually does resolve GERD (although not always -- tracyringo, who's on here, hasn't seen any improvement yet, unfortunately) - but for most people, yes - it stops it. most RNY'ers don't dump (the statistic that gets thrown around a lot is 30% of us dump, although I don't know if there's any hardcore medical research behind that number. However, I've been on bariatric boards for the last six years, and I know a lot of us don't dump - so that number doesn't surprise me. And no - you don't dump on Splenda or other artificial sweeteners. Just sugar - and for some people, fats (although I should add that some artificial sweeteners, esp sugar alcohols, give some people G/I distress - but that's true of normal people, too - not just WLS patients). weight loss supposedly isn't as fast or easy with revisions as it is with virgin surgeries, but some people do manage to make their goal.

Hi all, I had the sleeve around 2 years ago and now, because of GERD, I need a revision and am scheduled for the 24th. I also gained back around half of the weight I lost. According to my doctor, (new surgeon) my former surgeon took about 50% of my stomach when the norm is about 70-90%. I never did reach my goal and was frustrated. I am curious if anyone has experienced anything similar and if they were able to reach their goal with revision. Also, with regards to dumping: does it also happen with Splenda and the like?

Which hurt more? First surgery or revision to sleeve?

I'm planning to get a revision from lap band to sleeve soon. How was the pain for the sleeve compared to the lap band? Do you think because you had experience that it made any difference? -
