Protein help!
BlondePatriotInCDA replied to lp1266's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I told my dietician I was eating cream of wheat she said its technically a "wasted calorie" food "very little protein (even tho it suggests it in the post op manual they gave me) ...she said add protein powder to it to help.. Perhaps that can work for you? I've been adding protein powder to everything that passes my lips to get me to the required 80 grams they want me at..now the liquids that's a different story 😕 -
60 lbs in 5 months is amazing though. I hope you can continue to lose and improve your health OP. It does require a bit of jiggling of protein/carb ratio though as we progress. Hopefully your team can help you with that. What's your current weight? Think your profile is stuck at your August stats. I wish you the best of luck.

Great advice above. I had a sleeve so my experience might be different from yours OP. My full on hunger returned about 7 or 8 months out. Sorry yours has come back so soon - it is sooo variable. I have religiously stuck to the protein first mantra ever since. I find if I eat an ounce or two of deli meat, yes it might be more calorific than veg or fruit, but it kept me full for MUCH longer. Plus gets me to protein goal. I say experiment and find what works for you. Absolutely echo what @Arabesque says about head vs real hunger - if you're craving something particular then it might be worth trying to distract yourself/defer eating. If you're properly hungry then go for a small amount of protein and re-evaluate half an hour later.

Thank you! Do you have a brand of protein powder you like? I have some "unflavored" left, but I can still taste it.

Protein shake recipes
New To This23 replied to LindsayT's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I put sugar-free coffee syrups in mine. I like the taste of coffee so sometimes I add dehydrated decaf coffee to my chocolate shake powder. I really like to make this shake, 1 cup almond milk, 1 scope chocolate protein powder, a few shakes of dehydrated decaf, shake it up, then add using your intuition as a guide coconut syrup, amaretto syrup, hazelnut syrup, chocolate syrup (smaller amount on this one because it will make it taste very sweet) and heavy on cinnamon syrup and toasted marshmallow syrup. I also make a lot of other drink variations with those syrups as well with and without the dehydrated coffee, If you can have salt, then 1 cup of almond milk, one scoop of vanilla protein powder, caramel syrup to taste, and a dash of kosher salt, is pretty good. If you like peanut butter, consider adding peanut butter powder to your shake as well as chocolate syrup and maybe some bananas. Unflavored protein is great too, but if you have vanilla and adding fruits and/or veggies tends to cancel out the vanilla taste. -
Unfortunately, yes your hunger comes back as do all your cravings, old bad habits, etc. it can be difficult at first to discern between real hunger & head hunger. Real hunger feels different. I feel restless as if something is wrong. There is always a logical reason I feel hungry (haven’t eaten, missed a meal, didn’t eat much,). If there isn’t a reason to feel hungry or if I crave a specific food, flavour or texture I know it’s head hunger. Head hunger often passes real hunger doesn’t. If you are still producing too much stomach acid you may have hunger pangs. Hunger pangs & your tummy rumbling usually isn’t a sign of hunger as we were always told - it’s just either too much acid (try taking a ppi or antacid) or your digestive system working properly. Distractions can help. Go for a walk, craft, read, clean out a cupboard or drawer, ring a friend, check this forum, play a game. Even set a time - I’ll have something to eat in half an hour & then chose a nutrient dense low calorie option. Sipping a warm drink can help too. Many find counselling very helpful to understand your relationship with food & what drives you to eat (your cravings, emotions, habits, etc.). They’ll also help you work out ways to manage these when they feel like they’re taking over. You won’t stop the but you’ll better identify why you want to eat & work out ways to take away some of their power.

I've really been enjoying drinking bone broth (not to be confused with stock or regular broth). The bone broth I buy is 10 grams of protein per cup. It goes down easy.

JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES
MissyMissfire replied to Mira88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh man, I've been experiencing that right now too! I noticed it started a few days ago and chalked it up to my cycle, but this is definitely new. I'm going to increase my calorie intake a little but also I picked up some rooibos tea from the natural foods store. I've used it in the past as a mild appetite suppressant. This will help me stick to my schedule more and resist the urge to snack or the need to eat between meals. But um....has anyone else been majorly losing their hair? The past month and a half my hair has just been coming out by the handfuls. I have naturally thick hair (overly) and always shed a lot but this is INSANE. I'm at about 50% my normal hair thickness. I'm definitely getting all of my daily protein and then a bit extra for good measure. I'm... adequately hydrated... that's still an area I'm struggling with, but I'm working hard at it. And I do know I'm slacking on my vitamins because I REALLY don't like taking them so my ADHD brain conveniently forgets about them. (They get stuck in my esophagus and sit there and it feels awful for forever. And the chewables are vile) I am going to talk to my doctor in a few days about the patch to see if she thinks that would be a good idea for me (less absorption is better than zero absorption...right?) -
When my hunger came back I had to really focus on lower calorie foods so I ate baby carrots or broccoli for snacks if I couldn't wait for my next meal. Carrots did not work for my stomach at 1st though so be careful with them if you haven't tried them yet. I also live on low fat string cheese and grapes. I try to stick to just 3 meals a day but I have never had a strong restriction. Many people eat 5 or 6 small meals if they can't eat very much at any one time. Just make sure to hit your protein goals because that will help you feel fuller longer and drink enough water too. My office recommends staying around 1000 calories at 4 months so I would eat more often if needed but just made sure I didn't eat too many calories. It was a very frustrating time to feel hungry but unable to actually eat very much. My hunger did settle back down again after a few months though so hopefully yours will too. Good luck!

I have finally hit the end of my rope with protein supplements. Every thing about them makes me want to [emoji2961] I'm not a food for breakfast eater, I like to drink my breakfast because that's when I take a bulk of my medications. I need good bariatric friendly protein shake/smoothie recipes. I'm willing to put powders or premade shakes in as long as I CANNOT taste it. If you have a good website or cookbook with recipes in it, that'd be nice too. Thanks, everyone!

Good luck on a swift approval!! I bought some sipping broths and some protein soup broths so I'd have plenty of variety. I don't want to have to rush and order things afterwards. Propel powder is probably good to have on hand for hydration. I have some of the ArmorLyte drinks too, you can order them on Amazon and they are pretty tasty. We were also told we can strain any of the Campbell's heart healthy soups, so I may get a few of those eventually. I've made a grocery shopping cart for the pureed stage on Amazon so my partner can either order it for delivery or use it as a shopping list for going to the store, since I don't expect to feel like walking around getting groceries. Luckily we don't have kids, just cats who act like kids. LOL -

Ohhh, I don't have any suggestions for a water bottle, but hopefully someone else will! I've just been using insulated cups with tops that you sip out of instead of using a straw. I have a belly band but I can't recall where I got it from... I got it for my hysterectomy, it was great. My surgeon says I don't need one for this surgery but I'll probably still try it. The key is to not cinch it too tightly, you want to be able to breathe and move freely! Mine looks kind of like this: https://www.amazon.com/ORTONYX-Breathable-Abdominal-Postpartum-Postoperative/dp/B07CW2TFRQ/ But it isn't that one so I can't recommend it! Still, you want one that is long enough to cover a plus size abdomen. Be sure to wear a layer of clothing under it so nothing sticks to your incisions. I wore post partum underwear underneath mine, they come all the way up to my boobs! They are non restricting so didn't press on any of the incisions, I'll probably wear them again since I have them. As for the hospital bag, I think I'm taking comfy, non-binding clothes, slip on shoes that I can wear socks with to walk the halls since they'll have me in compression socks, chapstick is one thing EVERYONE says to have! I'm supposed to take some clear protein waters. Electrolyte powders so I don't get leg cramps. I have a binder with all my surgery stuff in it I'll take, it has sheets for logging fluid intake. A long cardigan that will serve as a bathrobe because I'm always cold. A little pill crusher in case I can't get my pills down whole. Cell phone charger, phone, maybe my ipad in case I'm in there longer than a day. A little pillow for my tummy. That's about it, I aim to pack light! Oh a toothbrush, obviously. LOL -

My surgeon recommended Unjury and gave me two flavors to try but said continuing Premier Protein is fine as well. -

That 100% sounds like a ploy. Complete nonsense. You can get the whey protein without it being theirs. Just shop around and compare ingredients and prices. -

The title of this post made me laugh. Go with your gut oh SpacePossumSupreme ( love that name ) Some people cannot tolerate whey protein and it is very hard to disguise the taste. A mix of whey protein and collagen protein is recommended. I love Tasteless Protein Powder. I can put that in shakes, drinks, jellies, soups and most things that you can think of. This one is collagen based and is great for our inflammatory system and bones. Live long and proper. -
Comparison food numbers 4 months out
Possum220 replied to pamelacoa@yahoo.com's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I was consuming about the same amount as you at that stage and continue doing the same 17 months out. Stalls will happen. Drink your fluids and exercising helps. Our bodies can be quite tricky in how they manage our food intake. If you are continuing to eat the same foods then try changing what you are eating. Change the proteins for other protein. Change up your snacks. It really is a huge mental game from here on out. Reward yourself for the changes that you have already made. Start a new hobby to keep your brain and hands busy. -

Welcome!! You'll have to get really good at sipping on the road!! I'd be sure the doc gives you pain meds and nausea meds for the trip even if you don't think you'll need it. Grab a few insulated travel mugs (one for cold drinks and one for warm drinks) so you can decide what works best. A small pillow to put between your tummy and the seat belt so it doesn't press so hard on your incisions. Compression socks and frequent stops to walk around and prevent blood clots. And maybe a bag in case you throw up. Not everyone does but if you are stuck in a car it might be a reassuring precaution. And of course a few protein drinks and whatever you prefer to hydrate with so you don't have to shop for anything... When is your procedure?? Good luck!! -
Whole carbs or net carbs? How to break a stall?
Shanna NYC replied to Nyxienoodles's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Stalls are nearly a guarantee at some point. I wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage. Your body is just adjusting. I am currently 6 and a half months post op and had a few stalls last about a week or two and then a loss. I was the same weight for 2 weeks and then lost almost 5lbs, then stayed at that weight for 3 weeks and just lost 4lbs. Different things might affect it - could be as simple as sodium intake or not having a BM or your body just trying to adjust for the changes. Not too much you can really do to break a stall. Your body will move when it's ready. I do not specifically track carbs either, but I typically go by net carbs when I check stats. Honestly protein takes top priority and everything else just falls in line. I do track via Baritastic app so I have an idea about fat and carb intake, but I don't focus on those numbers. I am not of the mindset of all or nothing, so nothing is cut out completely, I just look for the healthiest alternatives and don't have them often because they aren't worth the precious space. A typical day lands around 50 or less net carbs. Let us know if the carb count change up helped for you. -
Some random post op thoughts....
RobertM2022 replied to RobertM2022's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks for the comments, stories and words of encouragement. As far as age goes, I'm only sorry I didn't do it much sooner (younger), but better late than never. I think for myself, there has always been this "fear" or mindset that surgery is/was the last option and if I had done it 10 years earlier and things didn't go well, I'd have to live the rest of my life dealing with the regret, frustration and failure. After the fact, I feel I have total control and have learned the life skills required to maintain this "new me" until I don't exist anymore. And as far as people-pleasing, I still aim to please, but I'm starting with myself!😜 -
Putting on weight even though I'm burning more than I eat?
NP_WIP replied to MaameWata's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Do not go by the fitbit, I used to have one and it counts your resting metabolic rate, meaning the 3k calories its showing you burned include your breathing and your bodily functions not your calories burned by exercise. It also will randomly record an exercise or activity if you move your hand too much etc. I was advised by my dietician to increase my carb and protein since I was doing HIIT or strength training 4-5 times a week, so now I try to do 80g of protein with a shake. I do for carbs sweet potato, quinoa, protein bread or wrap, oatmeal (fiber) and cream of wheat. I tend to weight more or less the same when I train hard since there is water retention for muscle repair, so make sure you are drinking above the recommended 64oz to avoid this. It also helps to look at your weight total per month, not by week or weigh in when you are training, and to start taking your measurements to help see how your body is changing. -

I had my DS SIPS surgery on 8/16/23. I’ve lost 38 LBS since surgery and 60 total LBS since starting the pre op diet. I agree that getting both water and protein in is a challenge. Hoping it gets easier. Good news I’m off my metformin for type 2 diabetes and have cut my blood pressure meds in half! Good luck and best wishes to all! -
My surgeon and dietitians say I can't have protein drinks that aren't theirs.
New To This23 replied to SpacePossumSupreme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just want to add in my binder from my surgeon's office they gave me a huge list of protein powders and pre-mixed shakes, and they also gave me a guideline regarding calories, sugars, and carbs for any protein source I find that is not on the list. I can share it with you if you are interested. -

same happened to me. i had to buy my supply of protein shakes from my surgeon's office. i was green and eager and didn't even question it. but yeah, looking back i realize they probably (at best) just wanted everyone doing the same thing, and (at worst) just wanted my money. i didnt end up buying more after surgery (because thier shakes were just too sweet for me post op) and also i smartened up a bit and read the label. i bought my own preferred brand after surgery (Isopure) and turned out just fine. -
