I had my third fill last Tuesday. Since then I haven't been able to eat much other than liquids and creamed soups, and most of the time I can only eat a few bites of yogurt or creamed soup. Today I got real thirsty and drank a bunch of liquids not all at once, but I sipped on it over about 30 minutes. Since then I've had a small supper that went down without any problems, and even had a couple of bites of a breadstick (which I haven't had any bread until now it wouldn't have ever went down) anyways I'm worried why all of a sudden can I eat regular food without anything getting stuck? I know it's not good to get things stuck, but I'm worried becouse nearly everything since last Tuesday has gotten stuck causing me to only do liquids and yogurt, and craeam soup why now can I eat regular food. Is something wrong with my band?

I was banded 10 days ago and am allowed soft mushie food. I am definately not over eating as am having really small amounts but after a few bites and chewing really slowly, making a 'soupy mush' in my mouth, I get a stabbing achy pain in my back, right between my shoulder blades. This has happened three times now. Either I've pulled a muscle (but as a massage therapist, it just doesn't feel like I have....) or it's my bodies way of saying "ok, enough food now. Stop." I hope it's the latter as this comes within 5-10 mins of eating. I'm only eating around half- two thirds of an egg type amount. Does anyone else get this? Perhaps I've just hurt my back and it's still stiff after being in hospital (but I don't feel stiff!) Lost 10lbs in a week, but no more for the last 4 days. Hope this is normal too! Happy Banding :blushing: Gill :scared2:

I am fairly new to the idea that the lap band
Neeley replied to Scottay5150's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have to jump in here wasn't going to but feel I have knowledge to share. Let's talk about Weight Watchers. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it ususually is a duck. So if you felt the reason she backed out was a cope out....it was. I have never once been pressured to buy anything at Weight Watchers. It is a wonderful program and I was very successful on it. Did I buy their snack bars-yes I did they tasted decent and I used them in my daily diet. Did I buy the measuring spoons, yes I did and guess what, they come in real handy now. Lap band surgery has to be her choice, and any other program has to be her choice. food is an addicition, and addicitions can not be broken with out that person giving in and admitting that they will control the addiction not the addiction controlling them. Understand that someone has to be there in their mind for this to work as well. The band is a tool. If she is not commited to changing her life style she will fail with the band as well and she will be miserable. You can't just "quit" the band, it is there you are stuck with it. Your support is admirable, but please don't push her, you may gently nudge but do not push it has to be something she commits to and wants. -

Ghost, Too funny about the shirts! Now they say "one size fits most". I ask "most of who"??? I would have thought everyone that gets a band knows a lot about dieting, food etc and that they have tried everything, but then I see somebody ask " what are proteins"? or what are "good carbs"? and think.... WHAT? Shrug! Scottay: Seems like your wife still enjoys being active and athletic, so that's a key thing to remember. Maybe you could starting walking together at night after dinner. When we get better at one aspect in our life, we sometimes get on the right track with other issues. If she feels better about herself because of exercise, perhaps she will feel stronger to take on the demands of Weight loss surgery. The demands of WLS include shopping for the right foods, cooking the right foods, portion control, Dr. appts. etc. It's work! Getting her physical activity up could help her feel like she can take control of what needs to be done. You'll find lots of info on the forum about insurance issues, suggestions on Dr's near you, what to expect after surgery etc. If you need to be pointed in the right direction on the forum for other specific questions, let us know. -
I get a LOT of recipes from Pinterest. Type in the phase # or name ie:mushy or pureed or even bariatric diet and it will pull up plenty. Just be careful I always seem to fall down wormholes when I visit that site.

Was there something you "had" to have pre-surgery?
STLMom2006 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi. I'm being banded on July 10th and I am super excited. However, I can not help the urge to go to the all you can eat crab leg and filet buffet with my family before surgery. Was there a restraunt, food type or specific food you just had to have before surgery in case you couldn't tolerate it after? Share! P.S I know this isn't a good way to think or do, please try not to flame me. I'm just curious what everyone wanted as their "last meal" -
I have a question regarding fills. I have had 2 since my banding on July 31, 2009. I felt no restriction with the first and little with the second. I am trying to decide if it is time to get another fill, and this is the question. In the mornings, my first meal of the day is difficult to get down unless it is cereal or other soft food. The rest of the day I can eat anything I want to with little restriction. Does this mean I am ready for another fill?

I am new to the site. My Dr just recommended the band to me and I have not yet attended any preliminary meetings or seminars to find out more about it. I haven't seen anything on the web regarding post-op recovery time? Also, what is the postop diet and how long before one can return to "normal" foods (albeit in smaller amounts). Thanks for your time

First off, like others have mentioed, please follow your pre-op diet. It is not a diet, it is about preparing yourself for surgery, and life after surgery. If you stick to the diet, you should be in ketosis and that helps with the cravings and hunger. If you cheat, you wont be in ketosis & be miserable for the duration of the pre-op. If you are having trouble with the pre-op, you better try to get things sorted out because cheating on you post op can have even more serious consequences. I know the pre-op can be hard, but remember that it is for your safety. One thing that helped bet me through my 3 weeks pre-op was dill pickles. Look for some that have as few calories & carbs as possible and munch on those. The crispyness made me feel like they are real food and the salt helped with the flavour. Andrew

Hi - Any other AZ surgeries scheduled this month? (AUG)

You two are doing great. I have had my first fill and did okay with it but I am noticing my food choices aren't the best. I have been lucky no slimin or PB'in so I am reluctant to fill again. I've lost 4 pounds in 5 weeks since the fill. I've got 4.6 in the band. Most of the time if I eat real slow I notice the difference. I just started back swiming and am trying to do it everyday. I've been a slug after work lately. Good luck on your jouneys, you both are doing great!!!!It needed to be said again we tend to be hard on ourselves. -
Just personally, I dont think holidays etc ought to set the parameters for your fills. You need a fill when you need it and I would rather go on holiday well restricted, just to a good level, not tight, but I try to no longer think of holidays in terms of eating binges, lol. I'm having this argument with DH. He's put off his second fill (and he's not losing that well on the first) till after a business dinner on the 25th. I'm like WTF? Its a set menu, its only food, it wont be that darn good and nobody cares what you eat anyway. Why on earth wait? But he's paranoid about disgracing himself, lol. He's not used to banded life yet. I'd get a fill now if I were you, but there's also valid reasons for not, as others will probably point out.

I have the same experience. Detoxing and listening to my stomach made me give up foods that I can no longer digest. I crave that delicious steak but can’t diges it for days. With my post op I’m trying to follow a diet of protein and fiber, in various forms, liquids or solids. And natural remedies for my skin coupled with supplements .. hopefully someone can inspire some more solutions, it’s only day 5

Hi, I am having my surgery on the 6th of June and if you have been reading the latest threads, I am very much struggling with this right now. For starters, there is a ton of things going on in my life (not bad things, but overeaters turn to food for good things or bad things) As we begin our relationship,I will explain more - I am just not about having all my information out there-- if you know what I mean... I am from Louisiana, having my surgery in New Orleans. I am 32 years old, married and have an adopted daughter that is 4. I am not sure what else to put here, but if you have time to lend an ear, or email-- or some great advice or just the notion that it will be OK - I think right now I could use you on my side... Jess

i think it's because the actual size of the pouch is 1/4 c. but while you're eating some of the food goes through the stoma allowing you to eat more than the size of the pouch. i think the card just says that to avoid litigation for stretched pouches, slips etc. if someone eats more than they should.

doing fairly well. Discomfort is minimal but I'm missing food. Not a hungry feeling more like I want to eat. I have been drinking the protein shakes and was surprised that I can take all 8 ozs with no trouble. I do get a full feeling but that's it. Is this normal?

Hi to the great 60's. I have been in the 50's group until I realized there was a 60's. I had my band on August 26, 2008. Did and doing great. I have lost 42lbs to date. I weighed in at 284. The questions and answers here are just a wealth of information. I have a home near Spokane WA, but in Palm Desert, CA for a few months of the winter. Can anyone tell me what a typical day of eating is for you at this stage. I have two of the energy drinks and one meal with no more than a cup of food at that meal. It is sometimes hard for me to figure out what to eat.

This is kind of gross, sorry.... Yes, and as Jack said, you got off easy! Mine combine a PB and a slime and you'll find me hunched over the sink with slime coming out faster than I can spit it (and I can't swallow it because I'm blocked and it won't go down) There is intense pain, I can't talk or function - all I can do is concentrate on getting the pain to go away. Finally I feel a retching kind of feeling (not like vomiting, much less intense) and the food finally comes out in a projectile PB, all slimy and it sometimes takes me three tries to get it unstuck. Attractive, huh? SOOOOOOO not fun~ and not something you want to happen outside the privacy of your own home! It always happens when I eat something dry and especially if I eat cake...good reason not to eat cake! (but I seem to keep trying)

the band is helping me eat less its up to me (as my dr told me) to eat better food and live the band rules you gotta want it and adhere to the lifestyle or your will be on here saying why isnt it working?

Sounds like u could use a Buddy for accountablity? I dunno I'm still preop and NOT looking forward to the diet I have to do before surgery because i always eat when i am not really hungry and keep eating because it taste good(does that make me an addict)lol yet super excited to get the word I have a date! Maybe if u had someone u could talk to when I have there's struggles with food&stress? Just my 2 cents? :-) -
and I am having a really hard time wrapping my mind around it: I look like a normal average person. I dont look sloppy. I have no food stains on my shirt. I can get up early and make it through the day. I dont ache all over. I dont have to wear fat people clothes. I dont recognize myself in the mirror anymore. LOL. The moment came yesterday when I was standing outside in front of our big window and I caught my reflection and I had to blink, it was really me. that normal size person was me. I have been so focused on being so close to goal that I forgot to look at myself. I am not fat anymore and I can hardly believe it.

AHH! I have been doing so well with my diet! Not overeating, not eating the wrong food, but last weekend, I went up to North Carolina to help my Dad move. As you all know, moving is very stressful and you do not time to stop and think about what you are eating! You just grab something and keep going. So I ended up eating sugar and then I couldn't stop! After you introduce that back into your system its like something in you snaps! Anyway for the last few days I have been eating everything that I can get my hands on! It like I can't get satisfied. So I decided today to stop right now! I fell off the wagon, but im going to get back on! Im not going to set it on fire so that I have to build a whole new wagon! I just needed to put that out there. This is a journey, every once and I while you will have two steps forward and one step back, but you cant let that stop you, because although you take a step back, you have to remember that you are still 10 steps farther than where you started!!:rolleyes2:

I think I'm too tight right now, but I'm not sure if I should wait it out or go get a small unfill. I'm having a hard time eating solid foods and I'm PB'ing several times a day. After my 2nd fill (1.7) I had good restriction for a few days and then I was hungry again. I went in for a 3rd fill and they explained to me that as I lose weight the band will get looser and I will need adjustments. They were able to increase me to 2.2 and they even checked me with the fluoroscope. I was ok at first but now I'm having more trouble eating. I'm wondering if I should stick with the theory that as I lose weight the band will get looser on its own and it'll all work itself out. I've been too tight for a couple of weeks now. Has anyone else gone through this? What did you do? Also, I need to update my weight loss ticker. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

Ohhhhhhh. ogodawg - I feel so badly for you. I went through the same thing yesterday and I can so feel your pain. I can't really help you except to say, call your doctor and see what they recommend for tonight. Go and get an unfill tomorrow and give your stomach a chance to unswell and heal completely before getting a fill again. The patient facilitator at my doctors' office suggested a small sip of warm Water with a bit of meat tenderizer desolved in it. She said it MIGHT help as the stuck food particle is Protein. She also said that, being protein, the egg would begin to break down on it's own and eventually pass through the stoma. She said this at hour number 6 for me. I sooooooo feel your pain and I'm sorry for it. My doctor called me back last night to check on me to make sure water was able to pass through the band and, after lots of questions about the incident and determining that I was able to tolerate it, he put me on Clear Liquids yesterday, full liquids today and possibly tomorrow, and then moving on to super soft mushies on Thursday. He also said that I should drink LOTS of super cold water. He said it soothes and helps reduce any swelling. He also said I should take Malox Plus - the plus part is important four times a day and that the Malox Plus liquid should be kept in the refrigerator too. He warned me that Malox Plus might cause constipation. Scrambled eggs are from the devil. They are on my never ever ever ever again in my lifetime list. Having said that, I tolerate eggs over easy just fine - great in fact. Boiled eggs mashed with a bit of mayo - no problem. Just no scrambled eggs. The patient facilitator explained to me that the protein in eggs, when heated to a high temperature quickly, binds together into very dense, dry, solid blocks. All the classic ingredients for a PB. I'm sorry I couldn't help you more. Please come back on tomorrow and post so I'll know how you're doing. I'm waiting to hear from you. (The usual disclaimer goes here - I'm not a doctor and am not offering any medical advise. You should contact your doctor as soon as you can and find out what he/she recommends for you specifically.)

Any one Regret Doing the band
Dina69 replied to dales2's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
dales2, All you can do is go w/your gut, what does it tell you?? I made the decision almost 2 yrs ago and it took that long fighting w/the ins co, but I finally won! I was banded this past Monday 3/26 and do not regret it. I understand what you are saying about giving up certain foods, but you have to think, I want to be healthier, able to play w/the kids, ride on a plane w/o having to ask some 89pd flight attendant to get me a seatbelt extender!!!! This is a commitment, but if you really want it, you can do it. Best of luck!
