    Bypass Vs. Sleeve?

I chose the sleeve because I had a lower BMI and did not want the added risks of having my intestines rerouted. I am type 2 diabetic and I have had great success with my BS since surgery.
  3. I had regret right after. Mostly bc of the poor reaction I had with anesthesia. Then due to that poor reaction, I stayed 3 nights in the hospital. I'm 4 days out and feeling pretty decent today

Haha, yeah, I hear you. I told my surgeon (yes told, did not ask) that I was ending my post-op clear liquid BS after 10 days. He actually agreed and said it was fine. I think it was along the lines of I either end the diet or I end you.
  5. Hello!!! Next month marks my 2 year post op mark. I have done amazining well with the sleeve until this past 6months have caught up on me slowly! I actually hit my goal weight within 10mo post op and have maintained it well being able to enjoys foods I like and just staying in portions not over eating. Well for the past 6months I have found myself eating too much junk bc I think I got 'too comfortable! " I have slowing gained 12lbs! I am not terrified and feel disgusted. All my weight goes to my belly so its even worse. I have began today to start a 5 day re-set. But any advice from others that I have thru this or struggled is appreciated. I need to get these 12lbs off and stay on track.
  6. 6/5/17- I decided to start my own status update so I would have a journal of sorts to look back on when I am closer to my goal.

So I am three weeks post-op today. My journey thus far has been relatively easy with no major complications. I have been able to gradually increase my daily exercise and calorie intake with few problems. I am following my plan mostly, but have been combining weeks 3 & 4 because they are very similar with only the addition of a few items.  My constipation is over and my system has pretty much returned to normal. I have not vomited even once though I was nauseous the first day after surgery. I am feeling very blessed to have had this opportunity to improve my health at this point in my life. The driving force for me wanting to have this surgery was to give my body the best possible chance at putting my diabetes into remission, while also reaching and maintaining a healthy weight.

I have not needed to take any medications for my diabetes since the day before surgery. My 14 day bs average is 99. I check my bs twice a day, fasting and 2 hours after dinner or lunch. Thus far I have not had a reading over 110. I am very encouraged by these numbers. Prior to surgery I could not have obtained these numbers without my medication.

Last week I went back to work and I also starting exercising on my new elliptical machine.  Work went well, but it did tire me out the first couple of days. I added a healthy snack mid afternoon and that really helped get my energy level up to last the whole day. I am weighing and tracking my food in MFP. I want to be successful and I know my biggest problem has always been portion control. This will keep me accountable and also help me to see trends. So here are my weekly averages thus far .

    5/16-22/17 - 244

    5/23-29/17-  602

    5/30-6/4- 740

I am happy that I have been able to get my calories up fairly quickly. I definitely feel the restriction and I am able to eat only 2.5-3.5 oz  at a meal. My protein level has been between 60-65g. I  am shooting for 70-80 in the next week and I feel that should bring my calories up to 800. I am doing my best to listen to my body and eat only when I am hungry, so I am not going to stress out about exactly how many calories or grams of protein I eat as long as I feel good and they are not too low. Figuring out a sustainable healthy lifestyle is probably the hardest part of this journey. The debate on these forums is helpful, but sometimes it is hard to know what exactly is going to work for me until I try it.  I know being a type 2 diabetic that my body is very carb sensitive. Right now with my somewhat limited diet it has been easy as I am mainly eating protein and a few veggies. I guess I will see how things go as I move along and maybe try a few complex carbs as I have more room in my diet.

    my weight log

    5/18- 208

    5/24- 196

    5/29- 195

    6/5- 193.5

I am very happy with those numbers. I do not have any weekly or monthly weight loss goals. I am just going to follow my plan and let things fall where they may. Slow loss is just fine with me and NSV are abundant. I have dropped a size already and I am feeling great!

I think this is a good first update. It is long, but I had three weeks worth of thoughts to get logged. I want to thank this forum and its members for all of their support. Since I had my surgery in Mexico I don't have a local group to talk with. I have learned so much reading the threads here and have made some great online friends along the way.

I hope to add my thoughts and progress here at least once a week.

Great news, good for you! Keep up the good work!

  7. I didn't have a ds, but I did have low bs the second night after my surgery. I was sleeping and they found it during a bs check. It was 49 and I drank some fruit juice to get it up. Mine never dropped that low again, but my fasting has been in the low 80's most of the time now without medication. i would keep checking and maybe get some glucose tabs just in case or fruit juice worked for me.
  8. How many days post-op are you? If you aren't meeting your protein and fluid goals you will feel weak. I think once I was able to consume at least 40g of protein my energy started to return. For me this was about 4 days post-op. I was walking 2 miles at 5 days. My bs went up the first night after surgery and has been normal without meds since then. Keep an eye on your bs if you are diabetic because it can dip low. Also if you are not used to normal bs 65-80 you may feel like you are having a low even when it is normal.
  9. BS been 98-106 for 2 days . Fidgety, no energy. Normal?
  10. This thread has been very educational for someone like me who is trying to figure out the best diet moving forward. I still check my bs at least twice a day and my numbers have been good. I haven't had a bs over 110 even 1 hour post meal so my numbers have been level with far fewer spikes. My fasting bs has been in the 80's. I am going to use this as my guide in adding complex carbs as I go along. Right now at about 3 weeks post-op I am usually pretty full after eating my protein, but I have been eating a few bites of veggies with my dinner each day. I envy those of you that don't have to consider the effects your carb consumption will have on your diabetes. Maybe my diabetes is in remission now and will only get better with time as I lose more weight.
  11. Bariatric advantage is my go to for multi vitamins and calcium, barimelts is my preference for the others as they melt in your mouth. Amazon is the best place for the barimelts. Also I buy children's omega-3 gummies bc I'm limited on what I can take for those. Personally I added Biotin as well!!!
  12. I have BCBS of Illinois. They took forever. I thought it would be quick because I didn't need 3 month diet supervision. Nope. They took full 15 business days for approval. That was for Pre-Determination. I was calling insurance every few days bc I started a new job and family was coming to town. When insurance said they sent it, I immediately called surgeon. Well, BCBS of IL mails it to surgeon. There went another several days. Ok. Great! My surgeon got the pre-determination. Let's schedule!! Nope. My surgeon's office then had to get Pre-Certification. Another 15 potential business days! All said and done, it took a month and a half to get all that and now I am finally scheduled for the end of June!! I hope your situation goes more quickly!!

    Surgery in a few hours

Don't stress the post op walking, the nurses and CNA that I had at St. Luke's (especially the ones at night) were super supportive and on the first night I was struggling bc of the meds and the can walked with me and was like a cheerleader the whole way around. The next morning i was like a brand new person and had to be told to stop walking and take a break! It's easier than it sounds!! Do you have a scheduled date yet?? I know you waiting on insurance but maybe a tentative date???
  14. So had my surgery RNY May 1st starting was 221 I have been sticking to what I was told. I been doing very well getting fluids and puréed foods that I got approved to start soft foods early. So, I was able to start soft foods I take it easy I know when to stop. So I don't over eat, I don't drink and eat. But I only weigh 202. Is this normal? I walk 4 miles a day with my dog she actually keeps me going. I created a monster if I don't wake up early enough for her she wakes me up to go walking. Which is great for me Bc she is holding me accountable to keep walking. But should I be doing something different? Or am I doing something wrong? I also do take my vitamins like I am told to as well. Advice? Help.

    Post op depression

It has been a month since my surgery and I feel the same. It's hard bc I live with my parents and they are always eating out or making unhealthy food that I can't even touch not only that, my bf always tells me I'm taking the easy way out and puts me down for ever getting the surgery. I feel so alone and when I get compliments my bf will not even let me except them he then takes it as an insult. What I find that helps me sometimes is writing in my journal and taking a walk and actually looking and taking time to enjoy the beauty Sent from my SM-G900T using BariatricPal mobile app

    What are you guys eating???

I like all my food piping hot to the point it almost burns my mouth and fresh. I also don't eat microwaved food. I use my microwave for melting butter fast and that is about it. I feel like leftovers are punishments. I can't understand people who meal prep, they are just eating left overs all week. Why do people torture themselves like that?!?!? I end up getting boxes for my food at restaurants just to make other people comfortable, but I toss it in the dumpster when I get home and don't even bring it in. I'm not eating leftovers I cooked and for sure not eating restaurant leftovers, reheated restaurant food is the biggest fail of fails. I buy meat a pound at a time, rarely get frozen, only with grass fed beef because you just don't have any choice. I cook my steaks/pork chops and immediately eat them, so I cook like 4 times a day. I also work from home so I have that luxury. I had a job for a little while a few months ago, and almost starved because I didn't have a lot of options of places to eat around me and I hate taking a lunch to work. I also hate most carbs so I don't miss the stuff people are crying about all the time. I'm weird and I know it, lol.

    I'll ask my NUT but...

I second that you should get doctor approval for swimming.. Pack some stuff in a cooler too to keep yourself hydrated and fed. Take frequent breaks if you're doing any prolonged activity.

    June sleeve buddies?

You all should join the Facebook group June 2017 Sleevers (the one with more members bc theres 2 that show up). It would be a good way for all of us to share this journey together!
  20. I have to keep my carb count down because of diabetes. So my plan is to eat low carb, but not ultra low. I will base the level on my bs and go from there. So far my daily carbs have been coming in around 30-35 and my bs has been great.
  21. I hope that isn't the case! I had to show a three year history for BC Anthem and I have been steady 35 for two years. The first year I was lower.
  22. Hi Dave, Welcome to the forum. You are asking all of the right questions (not everyone does) and thinking about the small details and how it will impact your life. This is definitely something to go into with your eyes wide open. The better educated you are, the more successful you will be. I'm about 8 months out and I wholeheartedly recommend it. I wish I had done it years ago. I wasted so many years being overweight and waiting to do things until i was thinner. The surgery stopped my body from fighting me and allowed me to focus on changing my mental issues around food. It is much easier to adopt new mindsets when your stomach isn't screaming to be fed. There are foods I have given up permanently, but i don't miss them. I also don't miss overfilling myself. I am able to eat out in restaurants and no one has noticed i eat so much less than them. I eat slowly and put the fork down between bites, so I wind up finishing at the same time as everyone else. All in all, it has been a great experience. Best of luck and keep us updated.
  23. 5 months after my vsg surgery, I inadvertently became pregnant (Not really getting into the details here). First trimester I had horrible morning sickness and eventually got on Zofran. It helped a lot... for awhile. But now, I am getting into my 2nd trimester and everytime I eat, I vomit. It's not immediately like with the morning sickness-- but 10, 20, 30mins after eating. My ob says that it's my esophageal sphincter relaxing due to hormones (the acid coming up triggers my gag reflexes). He prescribed prilosec 2 times a day, which I was already on once daily bc of vsg. I'm eating smaller portions than before the pregnancy. Nothing has helped, and I'm so tired of vomit. Has anyone been through this? HELP!

    June sleeve buddies?

Thank you so much! My pre op diet isn't al liquid, its protein shake for breakfast and lunch, and then a Greek yogurt or protein bar for snack (twice a day) and then dinner is 6 ounces of meat, 1 cup cooked vegetables and 1/2 cup starch. So I'm on day 5 of my 2 weeks and I've already lost 6.6 pounds so I'm hoping it's working lol I'm terrified of that happening, bc I have had some slip ups to be honest. But I hope all goes well on surgery for you![emoji173]️

    VENTING - can vs should

. NOT EVERYONE HAS MENTAL ISSUES WITH FOOD THAT IS OVERWEIGHT OR UNDERWEIGHT OR IS INCAPABLE OF CHANGE OR INCAPABLE OF LEARNING WAYS TO COPE WITH FOOD ADDICTION. This is complete and utter BS. If you're having major surgery to lose weight (or keep it off), you've got issues with food. Also, this surgery won't magically make all of our psychological problems with food (or any others) go away. You can't expect to be cured with the surgery alone. Yes, people can develop coping mechanisms, but it takes work on their part and in some cases, professional help. The people we see asking questions about foods that are clearly not on their plan may not be quite ready for the commitment it takes to make the surgery successful in the long run. Some people feel they're doing a service to point that out. Me personally? I couldn't care less unless they are endangering themselves. It's not my job to define what their success looks like.
