    December 2019 Sleeves

Officially 6 weeks out today and I’m able to return to “regular foods” lol. Not that I have much of an appetite and I get full after I few bites. I had 1/4 of an omelette for breakfast (so good) hope it reheats well. Triple zero Greek yogurt for snack, a 2oz chicken breast for lunch with some roasted cauliflower (didn’t finish but yummy). Got home and my husband bought me a hot pickle (my fave). I haven’t had one since before surgery. I had 2 thin slices...so good. Had leftover chicken breast for dinner with 1/4 baked sweet potato. Although I’m not finishing my plates I’m so excited to be enjoying dinner with my family again! I bought a food scale so I can measure out my meats, more yogurts and protein granola, string cheese, whole grain crackers, mini baby bell cheese and more fairlife protein shakes to make it through my first “normal” week!

You don't have to be keto girlfriend! Nor that restrictive. Just maybe think about for now filling your tum with super FILLING high fiber stuff that isn't calorically dense nor sweet/a bunch of high glycemic carbs that break down to sugar. (i.e. More salads - lots of them! Instead of oatmeal, do a chocolate chia and hemp heart warm pudding with some blueberries (frozen) on them, only 1/2ounce and a dollop of vanilla Greek yogurt, plain sweetened with a drop or two of stevia.) Those sorts of swaps. Right? Instead of popcorn, do pork rinds and a yogurt Ranch dip or yogurt onion dip...that sort of thign.

  4. If you are drinking full sugar versions of these, here is most likely your culprit. Ditch the sugary drinks. Drink as little artificially sweetened drinks as you can. And get your water in. Eat your protein first. You should be on softs now? So do soft dense lean protein first. And after have a bite or two of well cooked low glycemic veg and only a tiny bit of fat. Limit cheese and only do plain Greek nonfat yogurt or 2% cottage cheese and you can mix it with fruit flavored protein powders for sweetness.
  5. My husband has an eating disorder that basically keeps him from eating or even touching vegetables and fruit. In his previous relationship, he did everything (including cooking and packing lunches), so my two step children (8 and 6) never really knew what healthy foods looked like before I came into the picture. Breakfast was always some sugary cereal. Their lunches were made up of primarily a couple pieces of rye bread with butter and lunch meat on it. A typical dinner would be frikadeller (meatballs) and brown sauce. It could have been worse, but still -- that wasn't going to cut it for me. These children are my responsibility now, too, and I won't let my kids grow up like this.. like me. I remember my husband telling me a story about his neighbor trying to help him with his condition by making lasagna (with carrots in it) and having him and the kids try it. The kids were eating it up, but once they saw that their dad couldn't handle it, they stopped eating it too. Roughly 2 years ago is when I came into their lives. I am the parent who takes care of the food, from meal plans to getting it on the table. I started making dishes where the kids could choose at least one healthy thing to go into it, while my husband could eat it plain. They fought with me at first, told me they didn't like x, y, z, but I was persistent. I also started making food that would just normally include vegetables, like chicken stir-fry, or tuna & broccoli casserole, which only had minor nitpicking in response. I started putting mixed vegetables or just a specific vegetable as a side and they were told to eat them first. They do this without any complaints now. I don't even have to ask them to eat it first because I know they will finish it. These days, my daughter begs for me to make asparagus for both dinner and to take to school for her lunches & my son is always picking out fruit in the grocery store. 👍 For breakfast, we've ditched the sugary cereal and have started going with whole-grain, if we don't have time to sit down for a real meal. My husband put sugar in their cereal one morning and received complaints from the kids that it was too sweet for them. On days where we all have our **** together on time, we will usually have eggs, bacon, and fruit, or a whole-grain bagel with low-fat cream cheese and fruit on the side. Lunch boxes rarely come back with anything left in them. Unless we have leftovers that are wanted for lunch, the rye bread remains, but I've added oranges, grapes, apples, carrots, etc. Snacks usually consist low-fat yogurt or whole-grain crackers/pretzels. This was all done while their dad sat at the table and didn't participate in adding vegetables to his diet and sometimes even needed a completely separate meal made for him. It wasn't easy to get the kids to this point, but that felt like it was more because they had formed a habit of not eating properly and didn't want to change it, rather than being worried about what dad was eating. Either way, I think leading by example is a good way to teach children anything. I see so much of myself in these kids that aren't even biologically mine and it's because they mimic almost everything I do. 😅 Even though you won't be on the liquid diet for long, I think you should explain why you are having to eat that way and why they should be eating the way you are presenting food to them. If quick foods are a necessity, I'd recommend some kind of meal prepping once a week so that the kids and you will have something healthy and easy to grab and go with.

I am really just focusing on getting all my fluids in. I do a lot of crystal light with water. I have been struggling with the protein piece of it. The premier protein shakes make me sick to my stomach. I try to get 1 shake in and make up the rest of the protein with Greek yogurt. As far as exercise I am not doing anything more than walking my dog in our neighborhood. I wouldn’t stress about being stuck I’ve heard that the 3-week stall is very common.

  9. You say you have to eat sweet and sugary food! Really, why? The thing to realise here is that surgery is only a tool. It doesn’t choose what you put in your mouth and doesn’t make unhealthy choices. You do. You buy the food and you eat it, not your sleeve and not your bypass. The only person that can make this work or not is you. You need to remember why you had these surgeries , what you hoped to achieve and refocus. Go back to basics. Use a small plate, eat protein first then healthy veg. No grazing. If you want something sweet have a small piece of fruit or yogurt with stevia and cinnamon or a cracker with low sugar jam etc. Track your food, including any sweets. Go and see a psychologist, get help. But above all refocus, take responsibility and take charge. You can do this

I eat from side plates and small tapas bowls. I use splades a lot - I think you call them sporks? Fork spoon combo? I like eating yogurt with a teaspoon too @catwoman7. Sometimes I just dip the spoon in not scoop it. I cut my meat into small pieces before I put it on my plate. Helps to eat slowly & keep each bite small. Snack size ziplock bags (15x10cm - 5x3in) for freezing leftovers & batch cooking - perfect serving size. I eyeball when I’m out - anything that would fit in my cupped palm is about the right amount of food (but I do have smallish hands).

I still use my baby spoons at almost five years out. Not for any particular reason other than I like them. I usually remember to pack one when I travel, too. Eating things like yogurt doesn't seem the same without it!

I like to make smoothies for breakfast. Either frozen fruit or ice cubes with spinach almond milk and protein powder. For breakfast also a fan of- egg white omelettes, Fat free cottage cheese with sugar free jam, and occasionally oatmeal. Lunch is usually grilled chicken or fish with some kind of vegetable and occasionally potatoes. Dinner is usually the same as lunch but also soup, shredded beef from pot roasts, and more vegetables. My go-to snacks are unsweetened applesauce mixed with unflavored protein powder and cinnamon, Greek yogurt, fat free cottage cheese, and light string cheese. I'm dying for a salad and can’t wait to have cucumbers and celery again!
  14. I just had my one month w/my surgeon, and dietician. I am cleared to go to the gym and eat solids but I feel I’m not there yet, food-wise, just by listening to my body. I’m stilll doing protein shakes, yogurts and some Bariatric broths to be sure I get all my protein. I can still only eat a small amount in a sitting!! Bit feeling good 💪🏼💪🏼

Hello All. I am scheduled for sleeve on January 30 with Dr. Udelhofen at Journeylite in Cincinnati, Oh. I am currently on a 21 day "liver shrinking diet" of lots of liquid proteins, no vegetables or fruits. I have completed all the pre op testing and paperwork, the only thing I don't have is a surgery time. I will only be staying at the surgery center for about four hours after the surgery- they make you walk, drink, and pee, then they cut you loose to a hotel for the night (because I live more than 1 1/2 hours from the center). If I have no questions or issues the next morning I am free to return home. The first two days of the diet were the worst, I was not tolerating the quantities of protein powder in the packets, so on day four I called them and they now allow me to have a few other things such as lowfat yogurt, cottage cheese, or a small portion of grilled chicken in place of a couple packets a day. I am currently experiencing a few days of extreme irritability. I don't know if it's the diet, the nerves, the fact that I am not sleeping well, or what. My questions right now are about Lovenox injections I have to take for 14 days after the procedure. Has anyone else had to do that and how difficult was it to inject yourself? I am slightly freaked out over that. Also, how soon have people been getting back to work? I feel like pain and healing wise I will be good to go after a week but I'm worried about throwing up at work when I am starting back on puree food.

My surgeon & dietician are fine with me not drinking protein shakes as the high protein yogurt drink I have as a snack has 22g per serve so similar to protein shakes as well as all the other sources I eat every day. My other afternoon snack option combinations give me 15-20g as well. I don’t track my intake everyday but do random checks especially when I change my diet. I seem to fluctuate between about 50 to 75grams of protein. Low on days when I’m not hungry & am forcing myself to eat to get in the nutrients.
  18. Hi everyone, I had my By Pass done on December 16th 2019 and for the first two weeks after the operation I lost 12 lbs in weight. Since then I have only lost 4 lbs in 3 weeks and I even make sure that I have (75g) 3 times a day 25g of protein shake that I make with half water and half milk in the glass totalling 200ml and I also drink plenty of water each day, and eat 1 or 2 low fat yogurts and a bowl of soup each day. I am in a wheelchair and I can’t exercise much due to a Stroke, but I try. So.... please if anyone might have an idea as to what it is I am doing wrong, I would be very grateful to hear from them as it is really starting to get me down now. I am now beginning to think it is maybe because I’m British 😜 as everyone else in the world seems to be having much better luck than me 😁. Thank you so much for your help and take care.

    V.A. Clinic Process

I feel pretty good. First thing after surgery in recovery room was a little rough, but nurses got my pain under control quickly. I think I got 3 or 4 doses of dilaudid via IV for pain the day of and day after surgery, but fter that I mainly used liquid tylenol to control pain. I did take a hit of liquid oxycodone at bedtime to help me sleep. But oral pain meds gave me nausea, but again nurses were quick with anti-nausea meds. Had surgery on Thursday morning and got discharged Saturday morning. I am on full iquid diet. Protein shakes, decaf coffee or tea, sugar free popsicles, smooth soups (no chunks, meat, nor pasta), skim milk, plain yogurt (can use artificial sweeteners in it), grits, runny oatmeal and sugar free pudding. I am on this for 2 weeks, then onto pureed foods where I can add low fat cottage & ricotta cheese, creamy soups, but no solids. Next 2 weeks is stage 3 soft foods progressing to regular foods. Then stage 4 to start integrating regular foods one at a time back into my diet. Right now I feel good. Sipping water to get my 64 oz in daily. I have zero hunger. Just a few little stomach cramps when I sip to fast, but again doctor prescribed levsin for cramps and it seems to be working. Haven't had to take anything for pain since I have been home. My incisions are pretty painless as well I only feel them if I really twist or bend to far. I guess am very lucky in that regard. My daily diet is one protein Shake first thing which takes me about 2 hours to sip down. Then I do sugar free pudding with protein powder added. Just add two scoops to the pudding mix and I mix with Fairlife fat free milk. That gives me about five 4 oz servings with about 15 grams of protein and 100 calories. I also do a protein water or fruit flavored protein mix in the afternoon to try and get 60 grams of protein each day.

  21. Good morning everyone, I had my sleeve December 2, 2019 (8 weeks) and have had tremendous success so far. Here is the thing...I really have trouble eating/wanting to eat. Has anyone experienced this? I have this aversion to chewing in general and am swinging between stage 2 and 3. I know everyone is different, but there are times when I am chewing and I have this feeling like 'okay swallow that and it is coming back up.' I have had intermittent problems with keeping foods down, but have found a happy medium with the softest foods possible. No matter how soft i make the chicken - and I am talking slow cooked dark meat - I cant eat it. The only thing I can eat is ground meat, like meatloaf. I am sick of the pureed soups and I am struggling to find agreeable foods. Any suggestions would be helpful. I have my second post-op appointment tomorrow and surprisingly, I have already lost over 60 lbs and gone down 3 pants sizes. That is great and all but the body needs fuel. I rely on protein shakes to meet my protein quota. Before surgery I could guzzle water and now I am struggling to meet my daily goals. I think I average about 32 oz. The irony is I want to eat EVERYTHING, you know the total see-food diet. I am not hungry but I am struggling with the loss of the ability to eat anything and everything. I feel a sense of grief and honestly, I know I want the magic pill that makes me skinny and able to eat whatever. I have a therapist and psychologist to deal with the underlying issues. Its just the day to day is the worse. My diet right now is protein shakes, yogurt, tuna (a little), low fat cheddar cheese, meat loaf, creamed soups, mashed potatoes (sometimes), and when desperation strikes spaghettios (and yes they are as gross as they sound). I eat those when days have passed and I cant meet my real food requirements. There is no chewing and 2-3 oz and I'm full, so gross, unhealthy, but sort of perfect. I used to love scrambled eggs and now I cannot stand the taste. I can manage boiled eggs and today I am going to try egg salad again. I do not eat any breads, pastas (besides the canned fake stuff), rice, or crackers. I want to plan my meals but I never know what to plan because I smell food and it makes me gag. I know my sleeve is small because I get that feeling like it never really left my esophagus. Any tips and ideas are welcome! E-
  22. Help me!!!!! Surgery date was 11/25/2019 and obviously I was hurting my first week or so but after that, I felt invincible. I had low sugar yogurt, I was happy, losing weight, eating mashed potato. I even made jokes if I had surgery at all because I was hungry most of the time. I am now almost 2 months out and I am so sensitive to food now, I am guessing it’s because I was safe in a bubble of soft foods and now I’m back to work. I had a piece of chicken with some queso (huge mistake, lots of fat in the queso) I was vomiting for 3 hours small amounts of queso (sorry for the nasty detail) next day I had to go to school and I don’t like eating in the morning but I had early class and we can’t eat during because it’s in a lab and I had small bite of a softer granola, no peanuts nothing and I had to leave class because I was vomiting the morning and that night, I took a Bariatric multivitamin which are swallowable because chews make me feel bad and I hadn’t eaten much because of the morning pain and I woke up throwing up at 4 am. I throw up a lot if something doesn’t feel right even if it’s small where I use to never throw up. I know I’m still finding my way and I tell everyone, no pre op diet will prepare you for this journey. I need help with foods and what I can enjoy because I’m starting to get a bit sad where I was once super motivated. I don’t like to be sick but everything kinda hurts. I had soup with an egg which felt great and protein water for now... Day of surgery: 256 lbs Today: 217 lbs
  23. Things are going fairly well for the most part. My RNY surgery was on 12/09/19 and I have lost 30 pounds since the surgery. I have lost a total of 115 pounds total since starting this journey to a healthier me on 05/07/19, when I started my six month doctor supervised weight loss for the insurance clearance process. I was on a complete liquid diet for the first 28 days. I am on soft foods now since 01/07/2020 and have been having issues with nausea. I have asked my team about this and they think that it may still be swelling or my body may just take a little longer transitioning to the next stage. Said that if I am still have this issue in 3 weeks that they will perform another endoscopy to check and make sure there isn’t something else causing the issue. I also am having issues with constipation. I’m currently two teaspoons of Benefiber every day and this week I started taking Colace. I have been taking Milk of Magnesia 1 – 2 times a week. I also try to make sure I eat at least one container of yogurt every day. I think that it may be from not getting enough water each day. Most days I usually get around 60 to 70 ounces of fluids but prior to the surgery I was drinking 90 ounces plus a day. I do not regret having the surgery. I feel so much better. My back, knee and ankle pain is almost nonexistent now. I have gone from taking nine medications a day to taking four medications.

    Cold 🥶 Feet 😬

🙂hi. No worries. I'm so happy to be speaking to people about this as I've never done it before and always kept it to myself. But its nice to share how I'm feeling and listening to how other people feel too. My surgery is booked for 6th April. Didnt you say yours is 7th? How does it work in the USA? Like, I'm able to get mine done on the NHS, which is free and luckily i dont have to pay, if I did, then it could cost me £10-£15k which is ridiculous, especially if someone wants to better their lives. We get it free in the uk as the cost of the op in beneficial and outweighs the costs when older and overweight etc... I wish I had the same meal plan as you, mine has put me on a liquid diet to shrink my liver for a whole 2 weeks before. He basically said I need to live off water milk and yogurt for the 2 weeks previously tho. Fingers crosses for you, I dont think your boyfriend recognises how hard it is trying to lose the weight and keep it off. For some people it's impossible x
  25. Take spoon or two of yogurt, and walk around. It can linger, but will subside after some time. When you do it with food - it will have to come back up, and sometimes you have to lie down for an hour. You learn not to do this.... take a couple times, but eating really slowly and really well chewed small bites is the key to figuring it out.
