It’s always best to refer to whatever literature your dr gave you but I was told that anything that I could fairly easily cut with the side of a fork was considered soft food. i was lucky and didn’t have any issues with intolerances but i did go real slow starting with eggs and fish. I stuck with stuff I know was fine from days before for breakfast and lunch and had one new food for dinner. That way if I did have any issue I was home and I knew the most likely culprit.

Already on Day 6 tomorrow. I’m on medimeal shakes for almost 3 weeks my date is Jan 23rd. 10am Breakfast shake 2pm Lunch shake 4pm 2 cups of shredded green pepper/ cabbage/ cucumber/ spinach/ cauliflower and broccoli with 1 tbsp of low calorie salad dressing. 6pm Dinner Shake 10pm snack shake During this time I realized how much food runs my life. Making food for the family I’m literally drooling (tear). Not about to cheat tho!!! I didn’t come this far to stay stuck 🙏❤️ -
I had lap band 21 years ago. Through the years I lost 120 lbs. 60 of those the last three years after I retired from teaching. My band has slipped and food is sitting in my esophagus. So it has stretched out, and my reflux is bad and I have to have the band removed. I am freaking out that I will gain the weight back. It has been part of me for so long that I feel funny having it removed. But I also don't want to have esophagus problems and can't keep getting up in the middle of the night with terrible reflux. Has anyone gone through this? Did you gain your weight back? Any hints and suggestions? Thanks. Deanna

There is no magic bullet here. In terms of protein density, you're just not going to beat whey or soy protein isolate. If you don't like them as shakes, you might try mixing with less water or milk into protein pudding? It may take some experimentation to find one you like the taste of that way. I've never tried them, but bariatric pal does sell some that are prepackaged and designed specifically for making pudding. If you want to go the whole food route, eggs and chicken breast probably come in next in terms of protein density.

When to stop drinking protein shakes?
NickelChip replied to AnV1986's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Generally, the closer you can get to a natural, whole food diet, the better. The goal is to get your protein from real food and to learn recipes and choices that will work for you forever. Having said this, it all depends what you like and what you can tolerate. Personally, I hated protein drinks but I did find a powdered one I liked and ended up having one per day at breakfast until I hit about 8 months post-op, but that was because I pre-bought a ton of the stuff on a big sale and wanted to use it up instead of wasting it. Once you can manage a Greek yogurt, a couple eggs, and 3-6 oz of meat over the course of a day, you probably don't need protein supplements. -
August Surgery buddies
Chatterboxdea replied to Averdra's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There were definitely days during Christmas time when I was eating close or at 1500, mostly because all the food was more high caloric than what I normally eat. It’s not an always thing for me but it happens on hungry days for me. -
Thank you for your concern, I actually am set with vitamin for the next 6 months, so I will plan their budget when I start running out on the supply, I unfortunately have seen the affects of not taking vitamins has done to people so I don't want to let it get to that point. I will use this weekend to work on my budget again, if I don't rely on the protein drinks, then I can use the money from the drinks to buy more slid foods, I may need to rework my schedule too, get up 30 mins earlier if it means getting a solid breakfast perhaps, I will probably take a hot minute before I can get a new routine, but I will try to make it work

Having second thoughts
Smanky replied to monikapaintsstuff's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Definitely don't proceed if you're having doubts. My surgeon advised against the sleeve because of my pre-existing GERD, and I got the Omega Loop/Mini bypass instead. While my GERD thankfully didn't get worse, it still happens every so often so I'm still on Pantoprazole daily (which also stops stomach ulcers which I'm prone to). For what it's worth, I also have ADHD and take an antidepressant for chronic vestibular migraines. I make sure I take them after food and ease off water for a bit so they don't go down too fast, and don't really have any issues. I can't take any slow-release meds though, so Vyvanse and extended release Ritalin are out. I take Ritalin 10, which works fine. -
Ok on Ok on the pamphlet she gave me it says chew for 22. It doesn't mention anything else like whether it means chew for 22 seconds or 22 bites it just says chew for 22. Your 1 minute seems a little excessive so I might just go for 22 bites which should last for longer than 22 seconds anyway. 22 bites should take 35-40 seconds which should completely puree the food. One thing that I found helpful last night because my wife works and isn't always around to have a conversation with is turning on the TV and watching it while I'm eating. I know the doctors tell you not to do that but I find it REALLY helpful in eating slower because it's a distraction and it helps me eat slower and make my meals last longer. I tend to not eat more like most people do when watching TV so it really, really helps. My question is though when my meals are a lot smaller how am I possibly supposed to make them last for 20-30 minutes? I barely can make large meals last for 15-20 minutes. I did manage to eat a salad in 20 minutes yesterday while watching TV but it was a big snack sized salad. When my food is basically the size of a golf ball how the heck is that supposed to last for 20-30 minutes? Even with being distracted by talking or watching tv?

Sticking to post-op plan working 80 hour weeks?
SpartanMaker replied to Chrys Kiy's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I don't have experience with that personally, but I'd suggest talking to your dietitian about it. Coming up with meal plans for diverse patients is literally a big part of what they do. As I think through possible issues, a couple of things come to mind that you should discuss with them: What can you eat to meet your nutritional needs that don't require a lot of meal prep? Obviously there are protein shakes and meal replacement shakes, but as much as possible, it would be good to eat more real food. Are your caloric or macronutrient needs different due to the long work hours? The kind of work you do will probably dictate this to a large extent, as a physically demanding job like construction would be really different than what you'd need to power through long hours in front of a computer where mental acuity is important. Best of luck. -
Hey everyone! I'm about a year out from surgery. The past year has been a pretty steady increase in my capacity for food. I know that that's normal, you're stretching your pouch out. For the past year, I'd joke with my husband that my capacity was "enough to eat until I felt like I could explode, but I could still send a meal back in a restaurant under the pretense of not liking it"* The past month or so, I feel like I've reached a slightly larger portion size. I always measure my food out before the meal and lately I feel like I'm able to eat more off my plate. I went from being full after half of a small chicken breast to being able to do the full 4oz and then some of my sides. I'm curious how far out from your surgery you are, and how much you can eat now. Care to share? *For the record, I'd never do that! I just had to frequently explain to waitstaff that I didn't eat much when they commented on how little I ate

I went away for a long time, got diagnosed with ADHD (suddenly my life makes so much sense...), and over the last five months I began to lose my grip on my diet and regain. My lowest was 65kg, my "happy place" was 67kg, and I regained back into the 70s at 73kg. The culprit? I allowed sugar back into my life. Never let sugar back in! It has no manners, touches your stuff and doesn't want to leave. Problem is, thanks in great part to my ADHD, I get addicted easily and tend to eat the same thing every day. When that thing is chocolate, I have a problem. I also have impulse control problems and when the food noise is raging, that's bad news. Solution: GLP1s or Contrave. I have a great GP who understands me and didn't reject my request for help to get back to my "happy place" 67kg. We decided against GLP1s and went with Contave instead, which works on countering addiction. The food noise that was driving me crazy has stopped, I quit sugar week 1 and am back in control. I'm nearing the end of month 2 (of 4) and am just over 1kg away from being back to where I need to be. I've stopped being hard on myself for needing help, because even if I could control my impulses there's nothing wrong with medication that's designed to help. Oh and the other thing that's been a game-changer for me: my partner got me a Fitbit. I realise I'm so behind on this it's like screaming "cars have computers?!?!" at a dealership, but being able to track my calories and see the deficit has made a huge difference. So if you're neurodivergent and regaining, hopefully my experience with Contrave can help a little.

Cross-addiction after bariatric surgery is something I didn’t expect, but it hit hard. I swapped food for alcohol and didn’t even notice at first. Therapy helped, but I also needed structure and support from people who understood. I’ve heard that abbeycare group's clinics offer solid programs for addiction recovery, including for those of us dealing with post-surgery struggles. Finding the right help makes a huge difference in breaking the cycle.

Unfortunately so many are struggling financially these days all over the world. Cost of living is skyrocketing everywhere & we have to do what we can to survive. I swear I go backwards every week. I am with @SpartanMaker in regards to meal prepping ahead. I love my freezer & my microwave. My freezer is filled with food I have cooked and frozen in single serve portions. I did this from early out from surgery. At most all I have to do is reheat the meal and zap some vegetables or make a quick salad. I can have a nutritiously cooked meal in 5 minutes or so. Easy peasy. As most workplaces have a microwave, grab a meal from the freezer & reheat it at work for lunch. For example pre cook some chicken tenders and freeze, then in the morning grab the chicken tender and pop it in a container with a few cherry tomatoes, some lettuce leaves, a few slices of cucumber, … done. I loved mince dishes because you can add lots of vegetables: meat balls, savoury mince, taco filling, etc. so you can eat as a complete meal or add to a taco shell or wrap if you want/can. And soup is great too for the same reason (protein & vegetables in one). And yes home cooked foods are often less expensive. For example I made pea & ham soup last weekend. I made around 18 portions (I wasn’t interning to make that much but 🤷🏻♀️) and it cost me $18.80 Aust (split peas, frozen peas, pearl barley, an onion and a ham hock) so about a $1 a serve.

So I follow the food before and after thread and I’m always amazed by all the yummy looking things they come up with but I am more of the five ingredients or less kind of cook so I lurke and admire but rarely post anything. I really struggle with variety and I am always looking for new ideas. Today I bought lean beef, mahi mahi and chicken breasts and now I’m sitting here trying to think of what to make for dinner but nothing sounds good. Does anyone have any tasty, yet somewhat easy, recipes or suggestions. I am trying to start eating close to how I will be eventually eating post revision surgery that is scheduled for early august. What your plan for dinner tonight??

Report Your WINS ..What is your today's win??🥇
AmberFL replied to Mspretty86's topic in Rants & Raves
My win is getting back in the gym and back on track! I have been cleared to do lower body, biceps and triceps. I have been prioritizing cardio which is great but now that I am back in the gym I feel so much better! I cant wait to hit back and shoulders but all in due time. I have been tracking and making sure I am staying in my calorie deficit. I started to interment fast, not a crazy one just 12:12, but its helping the food noise and helping me be more structured. -
Stressing about eating too much
SpartanMaker replied to starryskies's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So this idea that you can stretch your pouch somehow and make it permanently bigger is mostly myth. First, right after surgery your stomach is swollen. Over time, the swelling goes down, thus you can accommodate more food. This is normal and to be expected. Second, your stomach is designed to stretch. This too is normal. Think of it like a balloon. With nothing in it, it's small. Fill it up and it gets bigger. Let out what you put in it and it goes back to its original shape. Third, while you can't really make your stomach any bigger, you can train it over time to handle more food. If anything, this is what's happening to people that think they "stretched out" their stomach after surgery. It's not really any bigger, but you have trained it to not "complain" as much when it is over full. There's certainly a limit here though to how much you can stuff in and I promise it's always going to be less than it was pre-surgery. I would caution you to be careful about frequent eating. If you're eating multiple times a day just to put something in your stomach, it is possible to outeat your smaller stomach. It's best at first to eat on a regular schedule because as you alluded to, it's hard to understand both hunger and fullness queues. -
I traveled 3 weeks post op, went to 3 different parks (walked a ton) and went on rollercoasters LOL. I had the energy and felt totally fine. Also, my husband did all the super crazy rollercoasters so that helped. If your surgeon is okay with it, see how you feel after surgery? I was totally okay a week post op and back to work even. Just make sure you go prepared with your snacks because I had to eat every 2 hours and you know how park food is, so that was a struggle.

It’s been 19 years me and my band have been together and I have lost over 200 pounds today. I weigh 239 pounds and that’s a far reach from 430. However, I recently learned that erosion is a medical term for hole in your stomach Caused by the band so it had to be removed. It’s been three weeks now and the pain, the discomfort, the inability to tolerate food as upon me again and it reminds me of the days when I first got home from surgery. I guess now I just need to learn to not eat for a while maybe I’ll lose another 20 pounds. Either way my band is gone. I’m alive and well healthy blessed and have much more life. God loves me. Louie

Hi My partner had a Allurion balloon fitted 4 days ago. She has been losing each day but today she has put on 3 lb. She has been stringent with her diet. Is this normal when starting to eat pureed food?

Pre-op diet and I’m starvinggg!!! Need surgery buddies Jan.2025
ShoppGirl replied to theVSGgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You just reminded me. I was allowed a couple free foods on my preop. The sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles and broth and lettuce, pickles and something else I didn’t like. The popsicles helped a lot. I got the tropical flavor ones. The pineapple was so good I have them in my freezer today and still Have them as a snack. I log All of my food even my calcium chews but I still don’t count them or dill pickle spears as free foods and do not log them. It sounds kind of crazy, but mentally it allows me to not feel like I’m starving because I can always have a pickle or a popsicle, no matter what else I had that day. For me more than half of this is a mental battle and I have to learn little ways to trick my brain into not wanting to overindulge. Just keep in mind with the popsicles that some doctors do not want you to have red or purple a couple days out from your surgery. Just double check your literature for something like that. I actually ate the red and orange ones first and save the pineapple ones for the couple days before surgery and that was my favorite two days because I love the pineapple. 😂 -

ShoppGirl replied to Mspretty86's topic in Rants & Raves
You know what. I was doing so well and feeling so good with my nutrition and exercise. Then Thanksgiving and some medical stuff happened and I have been allowing some bad foods to slip in and i Am starting to notice I’m waking up more at night and waking up feeling fatigued. It’s honestly not worth it. The food that nourishes your body is such a good way to think of it because bad food is like cheap gas it just doesn’t make our bodies run very well and can cause engine failure. Ha. I think I just thought of that. Or I heard it somewhere and just think I did. Anyways, good for you with your nutrition. It is pretty amazing to realize the difference between a lifelong diet and a lifestyle change -
Spicy Food - I Can't Stop
Lilia_90 replied to buchannon's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't for the life of me eat anything that doesn't have spice to it. I'm a spicy food lover since childhood. I was very worried that I won't be able to eat spice post sleeve (GERD) but thank goodness I eat spice the way I used to with no issues. If my food isn't spicy, I'm not eating it. -
Liver Shrinking & Liquid Diet ideas
ShoppGirl replied to Spnswthrt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a very specific diet. Like a list of foods that I was allowed and I was not allowed anything not on the list. It was basically high protein low carb but it was still very specific.
