  1. I also found several choices from the vegetarian section. Low sodium vegetable broth For some reason the vegetarian section in my store has low sodium, low fat chicken and beef broth (go figure?) but it seemed much healthier than the campbell's choices and was still packed full of Protein. And good too. Chinese food restaurants have great egg drop and hot and sour Soups, but they will be high in sodium. As a matter of fact, I think I had hot and sour Soup on my liquid diet and it was just too darn salty. Of course, pre-this whole experience, it would have been perfectly salted. =P Must have Crystal Light, I even buy the generic brand and it tastes just as delicious. Let's see........Oh, I found a dry packed just add Water enchillada soup, kind of like a tortilla soup. I was allowed to eat the ingredients though, but if you were desperate for flavors you could strain out the ingredients. When I buy a soup or something now I try to stay under 500mg of sodium, that in itself is still very high, so very few that I buy have THAT much. But if you don't read the labels you may very well end up with sodium as high as 900-1200mg per serving. Browse the dry packet soup section you may find something there to your liking. Good Luck!
  2. Hello all! Sorry to ask what is probably a totally rookie question, but here goes: I had my second fill on Monday. My doctor suggests liquids for 24 hours then mushies for 24 hours. I did that and everything was fine. Then this morning, I had oatmeal. That was at 8AM, and I still feel really full, except water passes through. I was having oatmeal for breakfast most days before, and didn't have an issue. It is possible the oatmeal is just to sticky for my newly restricted tiny tummy? I haven't thrown up, and cannot imagine eating anything for a long time. Is this just how the few days after the fill go for some people? Yesterday I ate eggs, refiried beans, and a little chicken just fine. Any ideas? Thanks for any help you might be able to give!

    too tight or wrong food?

Thanks to both of you... I do eat really slowly, but I think the tighter in the morning thing may be what's up with me. My dietitian finally got back to me and suggested liquids for a while, then do liquids in the morning and add food at night to see how that goes. I am defintely going to wait for the oatmeal for a while, but I love it so much, I am hoping I can have it again. I have a suspicion my band may be a tiny bit tight... they found a kink in the hose, and had a really hard time taking some saline out during that second fill when it was over-filled. Now the doctor who I have to see when I get fills is out of town, so I am going to stick with the liquids.

    Second Guessing Myself

The only way to kill the sweet craving is to kill the sweets. I was a major sweet eater pre-band and I knew post-band I'd have to get it under control. So, I really cut the sweets big time. If I ate sweet, I ate the real thing. I didn't eat the low-fat, no sugar, fake sugar thing. If I had ONE cookie, I ate a REAL cookie with the sugar in it. The REAL sugars were almost a shock to my system, cause I was so used to eating sugar-free. The odd thing is, REAL sugar is much more satisfying to me than fake. Fake sugars make me crave more and more and more. Real sugars.. I need just a bit. I still practice this principle. I have banned fake sugars from our household. We are primarily whole food, organic eating people. But if we eat sweet, we do it real. If we eat fat, we eat fat. We have whole milk, whole yogurt, etc. No one has gained weight, and I've steadily lost. So, that was basically a big tangent. The moral of the story is... cut the sweets till you get control of yourself and then you can slowly reintroduce. And FRUIT is highly underestimated... My favorite SWEET is an orange. Mmmm...
  5. I have to agree with the staff at your doctor's office. I just got a fill and when I eat too fast and swallow big pieces of meat, I get stuck. I am in so much pain I have to throw up to feel better (I know I should not be doing that, but it is the only way I feel better). I don't get acid reflux anymore at all. So try and slow down your eating and chew, chew and cut off very small pieces of food. I was told the size of an eraser. That seems to work for me. Good luck.
  6. I am 9 weeks out and have one fill of 3 ccs. I have dealt with acid reflux for years. It flares up from time to time. Prior to the band, I would eat things like red meat or chicken and I could feel it work its way through my digestive system until it eventually cleared. Severe indigestion. Now instead of passing, the indigestion is quite painful and I have to regurgitate. What I have found that I need to do, is take something soft or smooth, like yogurt, cottage cheese, skim milk, a protein drink to "soothe" the tract so that I cans wallow food. If I dont, I have a miseable eating day. A scrambled egg is impossible to get down, I sucked the juice out of a slice of grapefruit and thought I would die. Even swallowing when I brush upsets my stomach. Do the soothing technique and things are fine. Anyone else experience this or reflux? The staff at the doctor's office says that I am eating too fast and taking too big of bites. I think it is more serious than that. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Why would I want RNY Bypass??

At the end of the day, you have to make the decision that works best for you. But here are some of the things I thought about: Lap Band - reversible, no food was completely off limits (later learned that carbonation is bad), less invasive, less risky ( in terms of # of deaths per surgery) and adjustable. Bypass - not reversible, not adjustable, higher risk of death during surgery, food issues (dumping with sugar). Do what's right for you. Good luck.

    First Fill

My first fill went well too. The water gulping while he did the fill was unexpected. And, it felt weird when it got to the full point and backed up. I liked that way of doing it. It seems like it was just right. The Dr did the fill. An assistant found the port on the screen and cleaned the area and I think put the pain med in. After the Dr got the needle in the port, I stood up and started drinking while he inserted the saline. Now I stay on liquids today and mushy food tomorrow and hopefully have good restriction! He said to go back in 6-8 weeks. I made an app for 7 weeks. He said I will be down 10-12 pounds when I return. Isn't he the positive thinker!! I sure hope he's right. I'm going to do my part.

  12. So I'm scheduled for my fill at 11:30 - what time should I have my last meal before they do the fill or doesn't it matter?
  13. Hi there...I can relate to your frustration. I was at the same point not too long ago. Please go look at my post "Not losing weight" on the June 2008 forum. Basically, I was told to up my calories and now I'm losing. I was getting somewhere between 800-1000 calories a day. I upped them one day to 1600 and then went back down to around 1200. Now I'm losing the weight again. I do realize that you have trouble counting calories via the online program. We eat a lot of Indian food. Sometimes I try to find just the single ingredients and add them up that way. Hope this helps some :w00t: Carrie

    What would you do?

    1. Those weird noises in my stomach, especially after drinking alot of water. Sounds like a drain. Not to mention the gurgling in my throat in the morning. 2. How my tastes changed. I no longer gravitate toward ice cream, or sweets. 3. How much of a non-issue the band is...I have had no problems with any type of food, no Pbing, sliming, etc. I'm very pleased!

Benefits Of A Post Workout Meal / Snack?

@ Nebula- Something rich in protein and low in carbs. Usually just a protein shake for most people. And the reason you want to take in the protein is so that your body can repair the damage that is done to your muscles and burn fat calories instead of taking those calories from muscle. Basically each time you work out with weights (and all of us should) and become sore the next day, you've made tiny tears in the muscle fibers. This is the only way that the muscle builds and gets stronger. Hence the reason for the protein. Protein is food for your muscles.

    First time for me...help needed

I find i can't eat solid food for Breakfast, so i will either have cottage cheese or oatmeal and coffee in the morning. My mom and I were both banded this last April so we have had each other to learn and support each other

    Observation

It seems like you all have had very sensible doctor advice. I think my doctor just can't get away from his GP success and he is big on his statistics. So if I 'fail' in his words, that makes him look bad. Screw him. This is my body and my life. I joined WW to get on a normal sort of eating pattern and get the guilt of eating real food out of my head. I'm having success so I'll stay there for now. I picked this surgeon because he was this best surgeon in the area. I had 13 previous operations on my abdomen and I had to pick an experienced doctor. Never thought the after care would be such a big deal. Thanks for your help... you have no idea how much it means to get this sort of feed back.

4th Fill tomorrow -- I have NO RESTRICTION

I'm not scheduled for surgery until October 28th but at the appointment with the surgeon (who everyone LOVES who have had him do the procedure) told me they (the two surgeons who do the band) are doing their fills differently now. After the healing time has passed I'll be given a minor fill and see how well I react. He said there are a few patients who don't need anymore but that most do. At the time of the second fill they will completely fill the band and leave the needle in while the patient swallows some water and then remove solution until that water flows through :rolleyes2:--- they stop the removal at that time and you're sent home to have a liquid diet for a few days and then see if a soft diet is tolerated for some days and, if so, move on to more solid foods. Needless to say, I'm a little affraid of going too fast with the fill process and am trying not to think that far ahead. I can only hope I'm one of the few who don't need a second fill --- I know, wishful thinking! Good luck to everyone whatever the process.

4th Fill tomorrow -- I have NO RESTRICTION

Sissy: I am in the same boat, inasmuch as I do not know what size band, the amt of cc's per fill, etc. (It is my own fault because I do not ask, but the fill visits are always rushed. They're extremely busy and they act like they are coralling cattle or something). I've had 3 fills and feel a LITTLE more restriction with each one, yet, I am still hungry, a LOT. The one thing I have learned, especially by reading this forum, is that we are all different. We lose at different paces, some of us need more fills than others, some of us have a harder time letting go of our comfort foods, and so on. Without the intention of lecturing, I will encourage you to talk to your doctor, be honest and ask questions...and trust me, next time I go for a fill, rushed or not, I will be taking my own advice. :rolleyes2:

    One Month Post Op

Yes I was on a preop diet and lost 15 pounds on the 2 week liquid diet. I also lost 14 pounds on my own when I was doing the 6 month evaluation that my insurance requirement. I have only lost 6 pounds since I was banded and recently the scale did not move an ounce.....it is starting to move slowly now that I am on solid foods. Congrats on your band. I look forward to seeing your successes!

    Getting tighter as time passes

Hi DoxieMom, I think there is a link that explains what all the bander terms are but Pb'ing is productive burping. This is all stuff that you need to know before hand. Regurgitating food was never an issue until I got banded (different then actually throwing up).

    why is this so hard

Bandster, keep your chin up! Everyone loses at different rates. I had to up my water intake and cut out sodium because the water weight was a drag. The scale showed a 5 lb weight gain just last week. But as soon as I made those changes, the scaled moved in the right direction. Make sure you are following the band recommended foods, drink plenty of water and get into an exercise routine that you can stick with. Start slow if you have to and increase it when you can. Just make sure it is something you can live with. Talk to your Dr. about your restriction level. Good luck!
  23. Well, everyone's different, that's the thing. The amount you should be ingesting may be different to the amount you CAN ingest. I think the thing is, you really have to eat according to what your body can handle, and whether you're hungry or not. I could probably only eat that much at that stage but over following weeks, I loosened up till at 12 weeks I could eat pretty normal amounts of food. So whilst nutrients may have been low there for a while, it evens out over time. And just FYI, there's no emphasis put on Protein at all as the one and only nutrient you need here in Australia, and we're not all keeling over . But the truth is, as a bandster, its probably going to be impossible to get the full amount of everything you need all the time, so supplements are a good idea. But really, its a lesser of two evils - you're far more likely to die from complications of being massively obese than you are from not getting quite enough Iron, protein or Vitamin whatever.
  24. My favorite meal is actually a cooking method, not a particular food -- my George Foreman Grill. Everything comes out crispy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. Some of my favorites are salmon, tilapia, cod, chicken, hamburgers, zucchini, broccoli, carrots. Nothing takes more than 10 minutes to cook. It's been a life-saver that's prevented more than one trip out for "fast-food" when I'm tired.
