    New to Bloging!

I had my surgery on May 3, 2010 and I started this adventure a year earlier trying to convince my company that this was the right thing to do! I was pretty convincing and they aproved my surgery. On 4/19/2010 I weighed in at 345lbs with a BMI of 49.6. I currenty as of this date weigh 280lbs. I have lost more weight in the last 6 weeks than I had over the past 4 years. My wife said I am loosing it 2 fast but I feel good! This was not without some pain and frustration but that you probably know already. I felt like I had made the mistake of my life the day after surgery but I have since changed my mind. Had I not taken this step I probably would not be here in 3 to 5 years. My wife had a lap band done in 1996 and had great weight loss until 2005 when it broke and damaged her stomach. She had to have an emergency gastric bypass but has had some issues with this surgery. The picture above was from 2006 and I have not had a picture of me taken since. That will be changing! I am having some problems with eating 6 weeks after surgery and I am still having to puree all my food. I have tried multiple times to eat small amounts of food that is not ground up to a pulp and have had no success. I will be seeing my Dr. on Wednesday and this is one issue I want him to talk to me about. I also have a wierd experience when I eat with my nose starts running and I then have to sneeze for about 10 minutes. I thought maybe I had a a food alergie but it happens no matter what I eat. Is this a problem with anybody else? Let me know. I am walking 3.5 miles every day and today I pushed it to 5 miles with no side affects. I plan to step it up a mile a week until I get to the wall! In closing I want to hear from some of you about what issues you are having and maybe we can work together to help each other. Thanks for the support! Jim P.S. the 1SunMoney name is my Poker name.
  2. I had Bypass on 8/10, things were going well, into my second week I was involved in a serious car accident. I have not been following my schedule due to injuries. I have eaten Pasta, rice, fried chicken. Any suggestions!!! Should I start over with a liquid diet???? Help!!!

Hi Shortgal & Sharona, Thanks for your words of support. Shortgal, your weightloss is great! Anything "lost" is always a plus. It's the up and down that I couldn't take anymore. I had did Jenny Craig for about 2 months, but besides being expensive to stay on, when I stopped I gained all the weight back, and plus some!! That's when I started thinking that the smaller portions do work, I lost 15 lbs, but when I stopped, like I said it all came back as usual. That's what really got me thinking about the band. Two of my friends had done gastric bypass about 8 years ago. One did and is still doing great! She follows exactly how she is to eat and drink and watches her portions. The other has stretched her pouch to where she is eating as much, if not more, than when she began. Watching both of them, I feel that I am ready to take on this new lifestyle. I think I'll be more careful about my choices and I do realize this only a TOOL to help me lose the weight. It is not a guarantee. I have about 100 lbs. to lose. You both are doing so well, and are a great inspiration to me to know that it actually can be done!

    Disappearing Posts?

Nope. There was one tonight too and a newbie named Cindy asked me about them and I was telling her that they provide aftercare. How if u have any sleeve-related issues or revisions and come back they'll fix it and gave their Facebook page link.

Yeah, I just re-read all the posts, you guys are talking about Toradol. It's only given in IV or thru an injection. It's a wonderful drug. I had to have it with Dilaudid for kidney stones. Docs said it was ok because it wAs bypassing stomach.

    opinions please

I was a revision so I had a bit of a different mindset. I spent a long time debating both, whether I deserved another chance at WLS, and also if I could even be successful after failing once before. But I do think that going back and forth is fairly common. Even when we know we need to do something to save our lives, I would question the sanity of the person that didn't at least give a 2nd thought to removing 85% of a major organ! Now, I would never look back and couldn't be happier, but I certainly spent plenty of time questioning my decision too, just in different ways!

    Self Pay and Scared!

Is there a reason that you dont want to do gastric bypass?? Did you do a lot of research on the sleeve?? Sometimes..a few yrs later.. people come back to get the bypass...im just looking at how much you want to lose ... you r diabetic as well...do you have GERD? OHHH i hope i didnt sound too negative and nor meant to confuse you...there r alot of people getting the sleeve..but from my research not enough long term studies of it and as i stated seems that many come back to get bypass.. i went straight to bypass...am almost y weeks out....no complications... im Canadian and think Mexicos hospital and staff provide wayyy better service and hospitality than what we get here. Good luck!!

    On the fence...

Abby - Northern California Kaisers are in their infancy in regards to the lap band. I know, I went through the SSF Kaiser program and was banded 12/12/07. They've been at is a little over a year. This is why most of their recommendations and information is spill over from gastric bypass stuff. You need to do your own research so that you can peel the GB stuff away and find out what you need to do. Lap band patients aren't effected by alcohol like GB patients are. Alcohol no matter what form it is consumed in is still empty calories and if used more than occassionally will prevent your weight loss from being good if at all. But one of the nice things is you can plan a nice cool one into your day and enjoy it. I think that the reason your boyfriend might not be on board is because he may be afraid that you won't like/love him when you loose weight. As obese people we tend to have low self-esteme. He might also be afraid that you will try to pressure him into getting the surgery. You have to decide to do this because it's what you want to do and not because someone else approves or disapproves. If your relationship is good, it will survive. If it's not good, this might be the excuse he needs to leave or for you to leave him. Only you can answer that one. My DH was afraid for me because it was surgery and he didn't know how WLS worked. He went with me to my appointments and a seminar and learned what there was to know. He still sweated the surgery but he is so happy I'm finally loosing the weight and active again. He's been so supportive. Sit down and write out why you want to loose weight. Put on the list how it will affect your kids lives as well. Then do a list of why you shouldn't have the surgery. Then compare them. I'm so sorry about your friend. I am so happy that the lapband was an option for me because I think GB should be put in the category of only to be done if nothing else can help. It scares me. PM me if you want. I know how frustrating Kaiser's programs can be from first hand experience. They are so slow because they are so overwhelmed with the number of people wanting WLS. There are only 3 Kaisers in No. Cal doing the surgeries. I think there is less in So. Cal. Until they get more hospitals on board they will be buried. Good luck and whatever you do, do it for you.
  13. I was banded two days ago and the operation was smooth. This was my first time in a hospital so, I was alittle nervous. If you look at your alternatives.... lap band is the best way to go. Bypass is far more dangerous.
  14. I haven't. I am only 8 weeks out. A good friend of mine had gastric bypass several years ago; she has gained/lost/gained/lost. She is still continually 'dieting' just like before surgery. I hope I don't end up that way, but if a person doesn't change their lifestyle/food relationship...I can see it happening easily.

    *March 21-28* TJ surgery

Hello i will be travelling from Canada to Mexico. My revision surgery is also scheduled for May 26th! I will be going to Limarp which is where I had my vsg in 2018. They were great. have to say not looking forward to the extra 3 night quarantine hotel stay when I land back in Canada and then another flight to get all the way back home.
  16. I have a 9cc Realize Band, and I had to have filled past the point of 9cc to get good restriction. I was a grazer, not an emotional eater, and I am able to distinguish between head hunger and actual hunger pretty well. Not saying that I don't have head hunger, but I recognize it for what it is. I'm not sure how often it happens with the Lap Band, but there are several Realize Band patients that need more than the 9cc to get good restriction, so I wouldn't necessarily chalk up your hunger to head hunger (or emotional eating) so fast. My doctor does a pressure fill measurement to Realize Band patients who are having trouble finding good restriction, rather than only relying on the saline measurement. Once I had good restriction, I was able to eliminate the grazing, because I was no longer hungry between meals. I eat 1/2 cup solid meals three times/day, one healthy snack, a Protein shake in the early a.m. on the morning I'm heading to the gym before the sun comes up, and lots of liquids in between meals. My weight is coming off at a snail's pace now that I'm getting close to goal, but my clothes are still getting loser and I'm able to move my belts down a notch ever so often, so I know I'm still losing fat. If you're still able to eat good healthy meals, and aren't pb'ing, having reflux, or other signs of being too filled, I'd go in for more adjustments before contemplating revision surgery.
  17. I am not sure what to do at this point. I got my band in March of 09 and I've only lost 20 lbs. My starting weight was 269 and now I'm 249. I'm grateful for the 20 lb. loss and I know that my band prevents me from binge eating. Although I'm very disappointed with my loss, I'd rather have the band than nothing. I lost great at first...lost the 20 lbs the first 2 months. I haven't lost anything since June. I have 8 ccs in my 9cc band so I'm pretty sure that I have enough restriction. I haven't been able to get under 1600 calories though (I need to eat between 1000-1200 to lose). I think I'm always hungry but I've talked with my nutritionist and she thinks that I must be "emotional eating" and I'm just misreading my hunger signs. My doctor wants me to do 1 hour of cardio every day but this has been almost impossible (I have 2 small children and work part time). I've been getting in 30 minutes every day and its a struggle to get that in. I think that maybe I should have gotten bypass or the sleeve since I'm an emotional eater (?). Has anyone switched from the band to another surgery? If so, what is the process? Does insurance cover it? I'm so frustrated and really wish I could win with the band. I'd be happy if I could just get to 200.
  18. Hi -- I had the bypass surgery on Monday and I was doing great until today. All of the sudden I started getting really hungry. I hope I haven't stretched anything out but it's kinda scaring me. Is this normal to be hungry? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  20. In looking for a surgeon, I first need skill and sucess with band to sleeve revision, hospital setting and then cost. I'm a stay at home mom with a young daughter so I am on budget and my husband is making sure of that! I will not sacrifice going the "cheaper" route when we are talking about my life but I'm having a hard time trying to squeeze out that extra $5,000 to have this done or convincing my husband to unclench his pocket. He's understanding but doesn't understand what it's like to be overweight since he's been a bean pole his whole life. I asked him if he would take the money out of his 401k and he looked at me like I was crazy! Lol maybe I just need to save a little bit longer.

    Frustation with Relatives

When I told my hubby he was like so your suppose to lose it fast and not learn anything. when we saw her at a pizza place I seriously could not believe what she was eating. We know several people who have had bypass and are big again. I knew I had to do something my son is almost 8 and weighs 110 lbs. I need to learn to make better choices so he doesn't grow up to be like me. Thanx so much for the support everyone. It helps alot.

    extreme hair loss

At 3 months the NUT said I ate too much protein. I had to revise the diet. My hair is thin and coming out for the past two months. Dealing with it.
  23. Hi Everyone! I'm leaving for Mexico tomorrow morning to have a LapBand-to-Sleeve revision on Tuesday by Dr. Aceves? Will anyone else be there during the same time? It would be nice to "know" someone before I get there.
  24. Before I had my sleeve in late July of 2012 I was 199 lbs. By March of 2013, I was below 130 and I looked sickly. Kinda like a lollipop... my head seemed too big for my body. I do have pics - just ask. I hope you are healthy above all. I was happy when I regained and maintained in the 140-150 lb. range. Now I am doing a revision VSG to RNY and at a much higher re-gain weight (for many reasons). Be well.
  25. With revision, at least in my case, it would meaning giving me a new pouch, from my old stomach. I have heard of people having this done before, but I never really read up on it, because I guess I never thought it could happen to me.
