    Stall on loss

Well I had rny surgery and I read that it is norm to loose 5 to 15 lbs per week the first few months following surgery , so that is where my expectations came from . I am glad about losing 20 lbs but in the big scale of things was feeling discouraged since the 20 lbs was really only lost the first 2 and a half weeks then I have been stalled since not loosing anything in the last week and a half , basically since I started eating instead of drinking liquid only. Pre op diet start was 9/1 weight was 305 surgery date was 9/15 weight 294 and today 275. But again the 275 has been the same for 2 weeks now. I'm getting less then 1000 calories a day and walking a bit but not much as I have plantar fasciitis and am in pain . I fear that I won't loose the weight unless I go back to starving myself like I did the first 2 weeks after surgery. Sent from my SM-G991B using BariatricPal mobile app

    Food Before and After Photos

Made a roast beef and cheese melt on my kids everything bread. It was good but halfway through I’d had enough. I tried to pawn it off but no one wanted it. 🤷‍♀️😂 Also made roasted garlic and scallion mashed potatoes and homemade quick pickles. Before and the total calories vs the leftovers and adjusted calories for what I ate.

    what surprised you?

Things that happened that i did not already know or read about beforehand: 1) 1 month post: my period would come back (i hadn’t had it in 2 years…thought i was in menopause..i was wrong), and continue to come like clockwork every month…im 4 years post now, and its still as regular. 2) 1-2 months post: my armpit stink would disappear (I don’t even need to wear deodorant anymore) 3) i no longer needed my ADHD meds. I had to pause taking them after surgery as advised by doc, but discovered i didn’t need to get back on them. 4) 1-2 months post: super human bladder control. I used to pee 1-2 times an hour during waking hours and got up from bed 4-6 times a night. After 1-2 months i noticed i could sleep the entire night with no bathroom visits and can go for several hours without during day. 5) 2-3 months post: the endless amounts of energy. In would have thought i would be dead woman waking given the so few calories i was taking in, but it was just the opposite Thats all i can think of for now. Im sure there were plenty more but its been so long i forget, lol.
  4. Tonight’s dinner. Asparagus, some stuffing and 1/3 a smashed potato. I felt that the default MFP entries didn’t account for the butter and olive oil I used to cook so I logged them separately for good measure. Still not the caliber of “healthiness” i said i wanted to get to, but whatevs. Like i said, im lazy, arg. Ate all the asparagus and stuffing but just had one bite of the potatoes (the Kid ate the majority of it…she liked it better than i did, ha) 202 calories for what is shown.

Yeah I wonder, no way I could eat a cup at that stage and no way I could eat that many calories either. Those sorts of calories are what you have to maintain your weight not loose

I track and weigh everything. I’m just so over this journey to be honest. I work out too so even though I may be at 1200 calories the working out should offset that. I asked the dietician weeks back if that can be the issue, too many calories to fast and she told me no because I’m still in a deficit for my weight. I wish I could read my bodies mind lol

    what surprised you?

a person i know uses xylitol based gummy bears to break constipation. gastric “side effects” happen with overconsumption of some sugar alcohols (a couple spoonfuls of the sweetener may work too)… the body can’t process it for energy so no calorie issues
  8. Now that I understand your time frame that is a bit odd. I am on week four of the sleeve, but I average about 600 calories a day, some days I get up to 800, but it is rare. I am losing slower now but I have lost every week, except second, I gained a few, then took it off and more. Make sure to track all of your food if you aren't already and show the doctors you are working with. I have heard of some others that have struggled as well.
  9. I think you are fine. I hear from a lot of people that they are around 25-30 lbs lost by week six. You don't want to lose so fast that it is unhealthy, and you have extra skin. I was told that I wouldn't hit 1-1200 calories until month six. But even 1200 calories shouldn't be an issue if you are eating the right foods. I think sometimes people have this expectation that it is all going to fall off quickly. My doctor said you should lose 50-60 lbs the first six months. Breathe and just keep tracking your food and plugging away. I am four weeks out and I have never puked either. I even was able to eat a small amount of birthday cake. Give it time.

    No weight loss

Yes, I do. I use the Baritastic app and use my scale for everything. Maybe I need to up my calories a bit, I don't know.

Yea. Something is definitely not right. Looking at carbs and stuff in the mean time may not be a bad idea if you aren’t already considering them (if nothing else but to learn how while you have the nutritionist available to teach you) but I admit I didn’t pay too much attention to them since my diet was protein focused and I still lost the majority of my weight by just reducing calories. Now I wish I had learned a bit more about the specifics now that I am on maintenance since I am learning that calories are definitely not created equal. I am going to go back to the nutritionist before I gain too much back.
  12. Posting on this thread makes me realize i need to clean up my diet (despite the fact that i am already logging everything i eat!) 1/8 of a monte cristo sandwich and some sour cream and onion chips : 356 calories (which includes an espresso martini that I drank beforehand, not shown). Ate it all. I have seriously been so lazy the past few months to make something more suitable. My cousin that i saw for (Canadian) Thanksgiving, whom I haven’t seen in a couple years (eff u Covid) actually called me “skinny-fat” to my face over the weekend. Inner outrage aside, i kinda agree with her. *Sigh*…Next meal is gonna be a salad, swearsies.

i hate to ask, but since it was Mexico and they rushed you out… can you get an endoscopy to make sure that they did the correct procedure? a cup seems like a lot only a couple weeks out from surgery (i am pre op so don’t know from actual experience just reading up on it) … i have heard of issues with dental work in mexico not being as described- i would fear the same with surgery… also, from my experience maybe you need to look at macros… i reduced calorie count but didn’t really start big weight changes until i went low carb. it did not change my calorie count much (around 500 less) but severely reducing carbs made weight start to fall off… (41 lbs in 7 months just calories, 36 lbs in less than 10 weeks of carb watching)… different diets work with different body styles, and that may be something to consider and discuss with your nutritionalist. glad you are having doctors help you figure it out. please let us know when you have updates…

I track everything I put in my mouth into the bariatric app. I weight everything that is not pre measured. i am on the treadmill or swimming laps at the pool daily. I tried the do nothing method and was gaining so that doesn’t work for my body. i have a Apple Watch I wear 24:7 except when it’s charging that keeps track of everything including my steps, calories burned, caloric intake, etc. my dietitian is the one that said I should be walking or swimming. Things I find so weird when reading about others sleeve surgery: - dumping, I have not thrown up once or felt I was going to. My stomach hates eggs now but it’s just a really uncomfortable feeling I get - everyone has fast weight loss. Me ALMOST nothing. Dr thinks my intial weight loss week one was fluid. We are two months post op. And seven weeks from when I got back and was weighed at my dr. - I can eat more than a cup of food at a time if I wanted to. I don’t. But I can easily polish off a Greek yogurt cup and still be very hungry.

Spaghetti squash and yes! I find it delicious that way. It ups protein and adds the creamy factor without heavy cream for less calories- 1/2 cup fat free cottage cheese is 80 calories and 13g protein where 2tbsp heavy cream is 100 calories and no protein.

You must be doing some intense workouts to burn that many calories are you sure you should be doing that this early after major surgery? Burning almost the same as your in take is not a great idea. If your figures are correct you should be loosing weight fast. Can I ask how you are measuring your calorie intake and what you are burning during exercise?

    weight stalling

The weight loss your surgeon gives you are based on state and/or country wide AVERAGES. So, it is exactly that and average. Some less, some more. Not one person is the same with anything let alone weight loss. You have had HUGE success, loosing 120 lbs in a year is astronomical! Good for you, be proud of that. The closer you get to goal weight, the slower the weigh drops because you have less of a calorie deficit. If you want to keep loosing, keep pushing. Track all of your foods and if possible, cut a few ore calories. Get those fluids! Regardless of WLS they are SO important to overall well being. I have always been a huge water drinker, so I have been exceeding my fluids goals since about 2 weeks after surgery and never have an issue. But, seriously I drink all day long. I still wait 30 before and after meals but I only eat 3 times a day so that is easier than when eating 5 meals a day. Find a schedule that works for you and run with it. I have the same routine all week at work, and then a slightly modified weekend routine. Best of luck to you, keep swimming!

    Hair

Perfectly natural side effect which most of us experience. Your natural hair loss cycle has been accelerated so the hair you’re losing you were going to lose anyway. It’s just happening more quickly than it usually does. The stress of reduced calories, the surgery & restricted diet, the hormonal flush & changes all contribute to the acceleration. Remember your body has more important things to use the food & nourishment you’re consuming for than protecting your hair at the moment. It usually only lasts about 3 months +/-. Don’t worry, your new hair is still regrowing but at its usual rate. Any vitamins, supplements you take to try to stop your hair falling may only benefit your new growth. The hair on your head is actually dead. Can’t save that. I know it can be frustrating & upsetting but the best thing you can do is just let it do what it’s doing. You don’t need the added stress of worrying about it. Some temporary hair loss is really unimportant compared to the weight loss & improvements to your health & welll being. PS - Many of us cut our hair if it was long so it doesn’t look as noticeable & it takes less time for the new growth to catch up & be the same length. You can always grow it again if you want.

How much are you drinking? Dehydration is easy in the beginning. Make sure you're drinking everything you're supposed to. Some tiredness and weakness is to be expected. You're not consuming very many calories. As long as you're staying properly hydrated, this will pass. I'm still pre-surg, but I will be on full liquids for 2 weeks after my surgery. So, I'll be where you are, in 8 days.

Unfortunately still not great. Down one pound now since I posted. I work out everyday and burn between 700-1500 in activity calories. I am keeping my calories between 1100-1400 as I was told to try eating more. I go for a CT scan tonight and have been referred to a internal medicine doctor.

    I feel guilty eating

Every hour to eat seems excessive. I was told to drink every 30-45 minutes and eat a small meal every 3 hours 4-5x per day. Now I eat 3 small meals and a snack at night and I'm good. Also, at this stage you can also add a protein shake which will give you protein to help with that goal, fluids for that goal, and some extra calories (not a lot, but like 110 or 130 or something). I can't stand plain water, so I bought the water flavorings (Walmart has em) with no sugar and no calories or carbs, and let me tell you...they help SO much. I bought Propel flavored water and protein gatorade zero (no sugar but has protein in it). I also drink tea (sweetened and flavored with Jordan's skinny syrup with no sugar, no calories, no carbs, delicious taste). I don't drink caffeine anymore, but when I was coming off it, I drank tea with caffeine. Now I just drink regular tea (or herbal tea, depending on my mood).

    September surgery buddies!!

Not saying you can never eat out, but I wanted to mention that the research is pretty clear that people that eat out frequently are more likely to be overweight or obese. Salads can also be a real hidden source of calories. We think of salads as healthy, but when you add in all the high calorie toppings and dressing, salads can actually be one of the most caloric things on a restaurant menu. Just food for thought.

    I feel guilty eating

Thank you so much, this is exactly the advice I was looking for! Someone that’s gone through the feelings and had a solid suggestion. I will most definitely look into a therapist that specializes in Bariatric weight loss. Hopefully my insurance covers it! I’ll also try to up my calories. Part of my problem, aside from the guilt, is trying to fit all that food in while also getting my fluids in. It seems impossible. My plan says eat or drink every hour you’re awake. That seems like so much but I know they say this for a reason. I guess I just need to try harder to do this and remember that it’s the right thing instead of feeling shame for eating so often. Thank you again!

    I feel guilty eating

Ok, I can speak on this since I literally went through this exact thing. First of all, you are in a stall. The first one usually hits around 3 weeks, but it can be a little earlier (like it was for me) or a little later. Keep eating what's in the plan, no more and no less, and get your walking in (maybe look into getting some ankle and wrist weights). That leads me to my 2nd point. Look for non scale victories. Anytime I hit a stall, I started trying on clothes and rings and looking at my neck and face and chin. The scale may not be moving, but that doesn't mean things aren't happening. The first time I was able to sit in a booth and there was space between my stomach and the table, I was elated. When my clothes were literally falling off me and my ring came off twice, I was ecstatic. Just because the scale is being stubborn doesn't mean progress isn't being made. Third, you have to eat. This will sound crazy, but if you restrict too much, your body will think it's starving and it will hold on to every little bit of weight it can. My dietician wanted me to stay at 700-800 calories per day, 50 or less carbs, 50 or less fats, and 60-80g protein. My body didn't like that at all. Not one bit. I hit stall after stall, would drop maybe 1 or 2 pounds, then nothing. I started experimenting and found that between 1050 - 1200 calories per day, 25-35 carbs per day, 70-90 fats per day, and 90-95g protein per day was where my body was happiest. I work out for 45 min - 1 hour 5 days per week. And then I started seeing MUCH better results, both on and off the scale. Now, I'm not saying that works for everyone, and those amounts are specific to MY body, and my body alone. But at about 3 1/2 months post op, I knew I had to do something. You body NEEDS food. It's like depriving your car of gas and then being surprised it won't go. Same thing. Lastly, I was in such a disordered way of thinking and behaving that I HAD to go to therapy. I'm still in it, actually. I had myself working out 2 hours per day every single day, living on flavored water, 300-400 calories per day, 10-15 carbs per day, almost no fats at all, and 40 or so grams of protein. And the less weight I lost, the harder I pushed my body and restricted what I gave it. I was so afraid of eating because I was convinced every bite would put all the weight back on. I was, at one point, eating 1 meal per day that I would make stretch all day and loading up on flavored water to curb the hunger pains. It's scary to think about what I was doing to myself. Find a therapist that specializes in bariatric surgery, and if you can find one that also works with people with eating disorders, that's even better. That's what I did. I still struggle sometimes, but I remember how far I've come and how much healthier and stronger my body is, and it helps me push past the feelings of wanting to cut my food and load up on water again. But a therapist is really important right now. I waited until I was in the thick of it before I even posted about it here, and I was encouraged to find a therapist, which was the best thing I could have done. I swapped one disordered way of thinking for another. I'm making my way back from it, but I'm still a work in progress. You can do this. I wish you all the luck
