I actually had to call off one day bc even though its scheduled myself a different day and only work 3 days a week, they moved me to that day bc they were short sand couldn't get anyone to switch with me. -
Hello, Started this process May of 2017. Finished 8 weeks of behavior modification classes and now have 6 monthly weight visits with my hometown doctor. Did anyone else have to do that? It is an insurance thing. I have Iowa BC/BS. I'm still hoping to get my surgery in before the end of the year since my deductible has been met. Anyone out there still in the " jumping through hoops" phase?

Surgery went well and I was home last Friday. Then on Tuesday I ended up w a high fever and was in the hospital for four days. :-( came home last night and I am just praying and monitoring my temperature so it does not get high. I do NOT want to go back to the hospital. I told the doc I regretted getting the surgery but he is so nice and a really good doc....running so many tests to try finding out what is causing the fever. How about you? I am about to go walk in my house bc it help keeping fever down.

Congrats on your success and on changing your life! Also huge congrats on listening to your tool again! Wahooooo! Would you mind if I barrage you with questions? Were you on any hormone therapy drugs following your treatment? Did they affect the decision on VSG v. RNY? Have you ever had issues with GERD? TIA (I'm 6 years out from BC and am on Femara--trying to decide between VSG/RNY.)

You can get used to it. I was never a big fan of artificial sweeteners, but they don't affect my bs so I learned to like them in my coffee. I only use 1 teaspoon of splenda, and it tastes great to me now.

Bcbs insurance anyone?
jaejae79 replied to Curiousme's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have anthem bc/bs of VA. I had to visit with my pcp for monthly weight consults/recordings for 6 consecutive months and her approval for surgery, psych eval, nutritionist visit, and cardiac clearance. After completing everything, my surgeons office sent in for approval which took about 2 weeks for anthem to notify me by mail that I was approved. Super excited because it's been a longggg journey. -
Keto vs paleo??? Have you ever tried it?
Apple1 replied to xoxococojay's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
For me lower carb works the best. I started eating LC back in January at 233 pounds and I lost down to 208 on my surgery date. The difference now is I am focusing on high protein. Having type 2 diabetes made this choice a no-brainer for me as my body is obviously very sensitive to carbs. Since surgery I have had normal BS and off all diabetes meds. This diet works because it is sustainable for me. My carbs usually fall out at around 25-30 net on a daily basis. One day a week I eat 40g net carbs as I have read and been told this is a good idea especially having a thyroid problem. My protein has been 75-100 consistently, and my calories are 950-1000. I have great energy and just feel healthy. -
Howdy and Imaginary Hat Tip

Welcome!! YAY KUDO'S on fighting that damn CANCER!!! Sorry I lost my MOM 13 years ago to Lung Cancer. I hate that stuff, muchh like everyone else. I had the RNY on July 2, 2013. I have maintained my weight loss for 3 and 1/2 years. I lost my weight in 6 months. I was so insulin resistant that my PCP was ready to throw up his hands. Since my surgery I haven't had to use anything. They call it remission. LOL I guess once you have Diabetes you have it. I found out 3 months ago when I had my blood work done, my BS was 210. My new DR wanted to treat it right away. I told her give me a month. I got back into my exercise and set down hard on my carbs. The first morning it was 165 then the rest were well within the guidelines so I dodged a bullet there. I decided to have the RNY because I knew I one chance and I said GO BIG OR GO HOME!!! I have never been srry about my choice not ever. Good Luck on whichever surgery you decide on. Never be afraid to ask ?. I'm sure you will get anwsers on any thing you may want to know. I look forward to following your journey. -

What was the biggest surprise for you at or after surgery? What do you wish you had known?
AK_Bookworm replied to sunmeadow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am most surprised that even though I'm heavier (surgery weight was 284) I'm not losing big numbers like a lot of others. My weight loss each week has been consistently 2.3-3 lbs a week but no huge losses. I'm also most surprised at how scared I am to try new sizes and how slow going down sizes has been. I am happy with my choice to have VSG but I'm surprised that I'm actually regretting not doing the original procedure I wanted (SADI-S) and didn't do because I had surgery in Mexico and wasn't comfortable have that type of surgery and not having my surgeon local. Lastly I'm a lot angrier since having surgery lol... my patience is a lot thinner and I just can't handle BS like I could before which is partially a good thing since before surgery I was a doormat and let everyone walk all over me and take advantage of my niceness so I'm hoping with my lack of patience now that I'll stand up for myself more and not let people use me. -
To Tell or Not To Tell
hmills653 replied to Polly Pocket's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I told my family and friends that I see in person. I told everyone ar work bc they are like an extended family and we support each other and one of the girls even said she was considering it as well. I did not announce it on social media bc I have come this close to unfriending ignorant people over this topic. I had someone post about how she lost 60# and didn't cheat and take the easy way out by having surgery that she went to the gym every day to lose the weight. I was so posed and commented about how weight loss surgery is not cheating, it's a tool and some people cannot physically perform exercises at the gym and with co-morbidities surgery may be their only option over death. This was before I even had surgery but it kills me that purple can be like this. She then either deleted the whole post or blocked me from seeing the post of that's an option idk. But I figure I don't see these people they don't need to know the intimate details of my life. But I feel comfortable telling everyone else especially if can help someone else to change their life for the better. -
Having trouble getting my daily protein
hmills653 replied to sylvia2017's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is similar to the sample menu I was given. I understand it's a good concept but I know my dietician wanted to to start eating that way at 3 weeks. I am 8 weeks out and I have to wait at least any hour after I eat to be able to drink or I can feel it. Then I am finally able to drink about 6 oz at a time, but then I have to wait at least a half hr before I can drink more. On the days I work its hard sometimes to even get a lunch break sometimes. I do 12 hr shifts, unfortunately we've been understaffed for over a year now making it worse. But I do have to eat multiple times a day to get enough protein. Yesterday I had 2 eggs before I left for work at 6 am. While at work anytime I went to the back to grab something for a patient I passed the break room, so I stop and drink some water. Around 10 am I ate a string cheese. At 1 pm I ate a 20 gm protein bar for lunch. At 5:30 I had a Greek yogurt. When I got home at 8:30 I had 2 oz of chicken for dinner. During the day I was able to get in about 36 oz of fluid and 77 gm of protein. Ideally I shouldn't be eating dinner that late, and yes I should get more fluid in. But I feel for working on a busy floor at the hospital I did pretty good and there's no way I could've done it without snacks in between meals. I haven't gotten to the point where I'm able to add in vegetables yet though bc I get full off the protein but I know it will come in time. At home I can do a little better without the time constraints of work. -
Bcbs insurance anyone?
AZBlackhawk replied to Curiousme's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had bypass but I did have BCBS (of Illinois). It was pretty easy but I wonder if it depends on the plan you are on. I did not need a 3 month medical weight loss. I just had to document what I had tried in the past (weight watchers, Medifast, diet and exercise, etc). I was only frustrated bc it too a long time to get pre-approval - 3 business weeks! Then they mailed a letter to my surgeons office (snail mail). Once my surgeon received the pre-approval, then bcbs needed to give them pre-certification, which took another 3 business weeks. ***BCBS covered my surgery at 100% (hospital stay only) because I used a Blue Advantage center of excellence. Otherwise I would have paid my coinsurance. I still need to pay the surgeon and doctors, but it saved me a ton of money and I chose an amazing hospital/team to have the surgery. Call BCBS and talk to someone. They can help you. I called like 3 times before I went for a surgery consult with different questions. -

So Many Questions About My Eating Habits At Work
2ndSpring replied to Redo2017's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To tell or not to tell... this is such a hotly debated topic and there are valid reasons for both. In the end, do whatever makes you most comfortable and makes your life easier. I chose not to tell. I'm very proud of my decision to have WLS but I have low patience for BS. I love a spirited debate and don't mind a difference of opinion, but most people are uninformed about obesity and WLS and carry some serious prejudices. I don't want to hear anyone's uneducated comments, no matter how well intentioned they are - or worse, get watched like a hawk. I don't want that kind of irritation in my life. I told everyone that I was following a doctor supervised liquid diet for a few weeks (like medifast). It helped answer the rapid weight loss questions too. -
I was having issues with that for a bit after surgery. I just didn't want to eat and even thinking about taking my pills in the morning made my stomach queasy. I just stick with food that had little taste such as vanilla yogurt, took my zofran and changed my multi vitamin bc that made me nauseated. Eventually I felt better. Now I haven't had any nausea but can't wait to be able to stop the omeprazole. He said 3 mos on it. I ate bc I knew I had to. I hope it goes away soon for you, but I would take the nausea med and eat something mild, I figure there was a reason they gave me like 6 bottles of liquid zofran in my prescription before surgery.

Exercise suggestions with bad knees
hmills653 replied to hmills653's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was on no big for a couple years prior to surgery and the surgeons office told me it was an NSAID and I had to stop it 2 weeks prior to surgery and not take it anymore. I just took their word for it and stopped. It really helped me. Didn't take pain completely away but I want spasming and throbbing all night long. I'm going to have to ask about that then. Unfortunately the steroid injection did nothing for me. I had a nerve block the day before surgery bc he wanted to make sure I could comfortably walk post op, amazing I had not pain for 3 weeks, but now here I am. I did go through physical therapy also before surgery and they gave me exercises to help stretch and strengthen my gluteal muscles. My physical therapist have me his business card and said to call if of like you schedule more sessions after surgery, they're located upstairs from my ortho doc's office. I absolutely don't want narcotics, I'm sensitive to pain meds. I have arthritis in my spine and last summer a flare up pinched off a nerve in my neck and I had horrific nerve pain in my arm. I thought for sure I tore a muscle. Anyway I was on Gabapentin and everyday I felt foggy. I ended up having to take it all at night so I could function better at work. I swear since I've been off of it my mind is so much clearer. Thanks for the advice. -
Most absurd thing people said to you when you told them you were having WLS?
mytime4me replied to mytime4me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your sister has the right plan, I got guilted into it by my husband because we have two small kids and she is going to "help" while I recover. I honestly have told 4 people in total and not sure when I'll be ready to share beyond that -if ever. The way I look at, people judge me bc I am fat, they'll judge me bc I had to loose so much weight in the first place, they'll judge me for being a mets fan...and the list goes on and on. Right now, I'm just worried about how I judge me- the rest will figure itself out ...oh and my MIL is un invited to thanksgiving hahaha -

Bariatric plan exclusion?
mlands replied to smadams's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I talked to my Dr about it and he assured me he would take good care of me after my sleeve in Mexico. He has already had another patient have it with no problem and he said he took care of her also. I am looking at September only bc I can't get into Dr Illian before then. He is booked. Good luck everyone! -
Day 5 No sipping, regular drinks?!???
hmills653 replied to Bambam626's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm a little further out than you at 7 weeks but returned to work today and had to grab something from the back and realized I hadn't drank anything yet today. I grabbed a 12 oz glass of water and guzzled almost the whole cup. Amazed myself bc I'm thinking if I can do this a few times a day there's hope of reaching my fluid goal. But pouch def not stretched, full off half a chicken breast. -
Altering my body and still fat?! Help [emoji1317]
lsubabe33 replied to lsubabe33's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't track my stuff. [emoji53] I believe it was done correctly, but idk. My surgeon don't do it anymore bc insurance companies weren't paying on patients. So the hospital was having to foot the bill. So right now he isn't Practicing.
