5 weeks post op: something doesn't feel quite right
PuraVida37 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi folks. I had a revision from band to sleeve on 3/26/21. I'm on stage 4 and had some ground up gyro meat for dinner last night that was a little dry, but I did OK with it. Today I feel "off". My head has a dull ache, I've had off and on dull ache in my stomach/chest, and when I took my swallow able multivitamin, the underside of my jaw hurt a little. What did I do? Is it just indigestion? Any ideas before I call my doc? Anyway, in the meantime I went back to just shakes to let my stomach calm down a bit. Thanks in advance for answering. Lapband, VSG, Now RNY Bypass the sequel
MSWDiet replied to Sincerely.blj's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I haven't had a revision but I had no post op pain after RNY. Pain was my only concern but I did not need the hospital's pain med drip or Rx at home. Fingers crossed, you will have little or no pain too. I wish you well. This time around you will reach your most healthy weight. MSW -

I had RNY gastric bypass in 2004. I have gained weight back unfortunately and a revision would be to revise the surgery I had in 2004 to help me lose weight again. They go in their resize your pouch...etc. They say revisions are not as drastic with weight loss as the original surgery but I don’t know that for sure. Some people need revisions for medical reasons. I am hoping with mine to have a 2nd and final chance to get it right. -

What is revision surgery -
I also struggled with sleeve vs bypass. The best thing you can do for yourself is research the reasons you doctor discussed with you. Then research any other pros and cons from a strictly medical perspective. I suggest you ignore opinions and preferences of other patients until after you've evaluated the objective medical facts. Patients may have strong feelings about certain procedures. I've seen "surgery wars" on many message boards. The surgeon I selected because of his sleeve experience recommended I have a bypass be it roux-en-y or duodenal switch. Like you, I believed the sleeve would be less complicated over time. However, after research I could not deny the reasoning behind this recommendation was sound. With my underlying medical conditions the sleeve would most likely have required a revision within ten years. I only wanted to do this once. Two days before surgery I agreed to a roux-en-y gastric bypass. I should have agreed to the more drastic duodenal switch. Despite knowing the surgeon was on point, I could not bring myself to go there. NO Regrets! I'm glad I studied all angles even though I went middle of the road instead of with what MAY have been best. My decision suits my comfort level. That was in 2009. Today I still struggle with ups and downs but overall I'm maintaining. Back then Gap & Old Navy had nothing for me. Now I float between the vanity sized 0/2/4 made for us amplely proprtioned American women . No revision needed but I will always struggle. Best wishes for every you decide. [emoji106] MSW

The longest plateau ever
perfektlynrml replied to perfektlynrml's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think you’re right. It is harder the closer you get to the goal. I readjusted my goal for now to make it easier to achieve. I originally wanted to get down to about 127 lbs but I revised my goal weight twice. First I made it 150 but now I adjusted it to 175. As I reach the smaller goals I will strive for the next point of achievement. -
Which hurt more? First surgery or revision to sleeve?
Tomo replied to PuraVida37's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
About the same to me. Minimal pain, minimal nausea. I am now going to revise to Gastric Bypass due to gerd issues. I was wondering what the recovery pain was like between VSG and Revision to RNY. -
The Sleeve vs Bypass?
starladustangel replied to Michele 2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
If you have had GERD at all I would recommend bypass. I never had GERD before my sleeve but now have to revise to bypass due to it. Sleeve was great for me weight loss wise and I hit my goal but GERD has taken over my life because of how sick I am. -
Surgery Scheduled and Telling No One

I did that and I found myself eating things I should've been. Just because I was hiding my sleeve procedure from the people I'm close with & ended up gaining weight. Now I had to have a revision from a sleeve to the full gastric bypass. ABeattyWhite -
Anyone had surgery Estonia Dr Ilmar Kaur
RonnieRoo22 replied to Mizmarycate's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi, yes of course happy to help any way l can. I had a bypass 20+ years ago on the NHS, it was the old open type belly button to boobs cut where they left a much bigger pouch for your stomach and only took 12 inches of intestinal track out. Where as today they take out up to 1 metre. My revision was to reduce my stomach further as it has stretched over 20 years and reduce my intestinal track further to reduce the aborbsion of calories. I lost 2 stone one my run up to surgery, and a further 5. 5 after surgery. Put 5lbs on during lockdown but hoping to shed that again now we can leave the house. My parents were both Irish so l was raised on a high carb diet of potatoes and bread, and you couldn't leave food on your plate. 😋🍞🥔 Hope this helps, feel free to ask anything. But know that he is a wonderful surgeon and a lovely man. I travelled on my own, so a little lonely over my 5 days as most bought friends or family. However Dr Kaur would pop in first thing in the morning for my health check & he would pop in on his afternoon break just for a chat & a laugh. 😅 Let me know if you decide to go ahead with it l will be happy to chat to you about anything you think off. -

julieschmulie16 replied to Mizmarycate's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
@RonnieRoo22, Can I ask was it a Gastric Bypass Revision? I am based in Ireland and have been advised that it is not available in Ireland and that only a handful of doctors carry out the procedure in the UK. Can I ask how have you found it since the procedure? Many Thanks, J -
Has anyone regretted getting the surgery?
starladustangel replied to Roses436's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am almost 2 years out. I do not regret the decision to have weight loss surgery at all although if I had known I would end up needing a revision due to reflux I would have chosen bypass initially instead of sleeve but I had no way of predicting that. I'm down 172 pounds. From a 54 BMI to a 24 BMI. Russell stover makes delicious sugar free peanut butter cups. There are reese's and quest ones too. I made what I call peanut butter cup oatmeal for breakfast today which is oatmeal, pbfit powder for protein and Walden farms zero calorie chocolate syrup. I've had diet coke a few times but carbonation bothers me so I have to let it go completely flat and it isn't worth it. I don't miss it too much. My PCP wasn't super big on WLS but my insurance didn't require a referral from him and honestly when I went back for a regular visit about a year post OP he was happy to see that it had been successful for me to have surgery. I don't eat red meat often as I don't do as well with it since my galbladder was removed. -
Reflux after weening off of Prilosec?
catwoman7 replied to OnTheWayDown's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it might be. I think doctors are more cautious prescribing them now because of the possible side effects. I'm sure they'll extend your prescription awhile longer if you need it, but most of the healing takes place that first month, so that's probably why they only have you on that long. A lot of us are on longer than that, though. Just let them know if you start having issues when you're off them - you may need to be on longer. But then again, you may be fine after the first month. as an aside, if you had sleeve, reflux is not-too-uncommon side effect - about 30% of sleevers have issues with it. Usually it can be treated medically, but a few people end up having to revise to bypass. But that's different than having some minor reflux as you're weaning yourself off PPI's. *Usually* that resolves. -
I’ve just had my sleeve revised to the SIPS procedure on 4/22/21. I Been a week and I can’t seem to eat anything without gas pains, even water is so uncomfortable. The pantoprazole my doctor prescribed me is no help. Does this ever pass? Any suggestions?

I went to my consult asking for the sleeve, but after my doctor recommended the bypass and with more research, I chose the bypass. I had occasional GERD before, and I didn't want to take the chance of it getting worse. There are WAY too many folks on here getting revisions, and my insurance was very clear that this was a one-time thing. I also have diabetes, and you have more of a chance of being cured with the bypass. I was concerned about the bypass being more invasive with a harder recovery, but my doctor told me that on our end, the surgery and the recovery are the same for both the sleeve and the bypass. The only difference is on his end because bypass is a more technically complex surgery that takes about an hour longer. I had my bypass on 3/3, and I'm so glad I went with it.

VSG to RYGB - after 5 years with VSG
Paradigm Star replied to Paradigm Star's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Greetings Coexister, i does seem that I am not a dumper either because I’ve tested this several times. I did get a bad reaction from drinking whole milk kefir. I got a stomachache. I wonder is this a form of dumping syndrome? When I drank low fat or non fat kefir, I absolutely had no problems with the kefir. However, when I had a frozen yogurt, I didn’t experience any sickness in my physical body. In terms of losing weight, for the last three weeks, I have stayed the same weight. I haven’t gained or loss weight. I guess that’s a good thing. You know something, Coexister? I have often wondered if my Bariatric Surgeon actually did the RYGB on me. My recovery is very similar to when I got the VGS in 2016. I control my snacking by putting everything I eat in my dietary journal. My dietitian gave me a calorie target and I rarely go above my calorie target. If there’s a particular snack I want to have, I budget for it within my calorie budget. I also read these forums for insight and inspiration as everyone that uses these forums have pearls of wisdom to offer each other. I have no regrets that I proceeded to revision to the RYGB because I my weight is coming down again and I have no more GERD & heartburn anymore. I also can’t risk get throat cancer from the hideous GERD I suffered from before I had my RYGB. 😃 I am six weeks post op and today was my first day back on solid food. I’m going back on solid food slowly - introducing each new food slowly back into my diet. -

I have never regretted my Lapband, even with some of the bad issues that went with it and I don't regret my recent revision to a sleeve. To be unburdened from a fixation with food, surrendering the concept of food as a comfort, and finally loving my body has been an amazing thing for me. -
Gastric Sleeve and Reflux
Lori E replied to Lori E's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I’m sorry to hear you’re having such bad reflux now. I hope all goes well with your revision. Of course I still have to talk to my surgeon but I’m definitely leaning towards bypass. The thought of my reflux getting worse really worries me. And congratulations on your weight loss - it looks like you’re doing great with that part of it. It’s so encouraging to see people’s post-surgery stats. -
Gastric Sleeve and Reflux
starladustangel replied to Lori E's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I would not get sleeve if you already have reflux. I had no reflux before my sleeve at all but now have such severe GERD I have to revise to bypass. Sleeve was great for me weight loss wise as I lost all my excess weight but the GERD has been awful. -
Severe Gerd/esophogeal dysmotility. Revision vs nissen or just hernia repair?
starladustangel replied to starladustangel's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Had my appointment this morning. My surgeon is reccomending revision to RNY with hernia repair. He thinks I should likely maintain my weight as long as I keep watching what I eat and tracking my food. -

I originally had RnY bypass - and revised to a new RnY bypass. Further distallized the connection between stomach pouch and intestine; made a smaller stomach pouch, and removed some excess intestine from the first procedure. (The "Candy Cane" portion.) -
Anyone for October 2020?
Coexister replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been stalled for a couple of months but have kind of fallen off the wagon as far as food choices and know what I need to do. Up my protein and lower my carbs. I do track my food, maintain minimum of 64 ozs of water and continue to at minimum walk 30 minutes daily. My weight goes up and down 3 lbs from 150 to 153 and my goal is 145. I think my excess skin probably weighs a few lbs. I am one of those that can eat anything and not dump. I don't feel much restriction and am jealous of those that do. I had more when I had the sleeve and so I have to be very, very careful. I am happy that I had the revision as it did successfully get rid of the GERD and heartburn. I did lose and am maintaining a lower weight than I had on the sleeve. With the sleeve I stalled and maintained around 170 whereas with the Roux en x bypass I am maintaining around 150 so I am grateful there. I keep thinking, I should go back to the liver diet and try and lose those last pounds that way? That maybe that would kick start my system? -

Hi! I used Memorial Weight Loss and Wellness Center in Springfield. Doesn't much help with the Chicagoland area, sorry. But, I do know they take patients from all over. They handled literally everything with BCBSIL. Both times - initial surgery and revision 11 years later. Dr. Orlando Icaza - surgeon. PAs and NPs on staff - are FABULOUS. -
Severe Gerd/esophogeal dysmotility. Revision vs nissen or just hernia repair?
starladustangel replied to starladustangel's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My biggest fear is regain with all the talk from people about the lack of restriction they feel post vsg to rny revision. I would prefer to keep maintaining close to my current weight as it is a place I am happy with. -
Maybe mind surgery would have been better than WLS!

from what I've heard, weight loss is usually quite a bit slower with revisions than it is with a "virgin" surgery
