  1. Hi everyone I am new here, I'm going to my seminar to start the process for WLS tomorrow. I want to hear from people who are addicts/alcoholics who are sober whom have gone thru the process. I'm afraid that bc of my past history and medication I'm on for opiate addiction I will not qualify or my process will be harder. I'm a recovering addict for 3 1/2 years, from heroin addiction and currently working a program and on suboxone. This has worked for me. I had a c section a year ago I was on subutex during my pregnancy and under the knife. Which it was fine for baby and me baby healthy and no w/d . I'm worried that I will be judged and told to get off meds completely when I know what is working for me and what can work for surgery procedures... such as 3 days prior to surgery lower your dose and conitinue to take that lowest does with the opiates the dr has prescribed for a few days after surgery, and when u feel u dont need them then to conitinue to take your subutex like you would have pre op. I've been reading that cesections are much worse pain than haveing GBS but yes I know everyone is different. I am just wondering how your process went? I've also read up on people switching food addiction for drugs/alcohol/ gambling/ or having too many cats ... 😜 J/k but I would like to continue on the subutex after surgery bc I've been down that dark lonely road of addiction and don't want to do it again. Also I've read articles about after having GB that patients whom taken suboxone that the naloxone isn't processed into your body. I know this is a lot and I may be all over every place I guess I'm afraid I be honest with these people and get treated like I'm a drug seeker. Or if my dr is uneducated on the medication. But at least I know the experience I had before and how I felt the last time. I will hope and suggest that to them. Please tell your stories!!! I can't stop searching the web on WLS!! 🤗

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

I finished the book today. I spent some time today looking up some of the studies he referenced in the book and I am amazed that I did not find some of this back when I was researching the best diet for type 2 diabetes. I think I had tunnel vision and just assumed I need low carb so I didn't even seriously consider any other alternatives. I was focusing on my bs levels instead of the insulin response mainly because I can test bs but not insulin levels. I think I am ready to put this to the test. As I phase out meat and add more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains I will break out my meter and test pre-meal, 1 hour, and 2 hours post-meal. I will report my finding back to this thread. I figure it will help any others who might be considering a Whole Foods plant based diet.

    Mentally starving!

I also add a 1/2 scoop of powdered Bakers Chocolate to my shakes: it's SF/NF & love the SF Davinci flavored syrups. I make homemade broths & soups. I'm on a Tomato Florentine kick bc you can have it hot or cold. It helps that I'm also a chef so I know the how/what of ingredients. My nutritionist said the liquids all count so this helps me & w chopped spinach & other veggies I get that chew sensation in, which is something I need. I make a Chinese wor wonton soup deconstructed & it's a lifesaver. I do the SF jellos, puddings & popsicles, too. What I learned was to drink my warmed broth first, before anything else in the morning from my nutritionist. I tried broccoli flavored w parm cheese, but it's too much for me presently.
  4. I am 5 weeks post op and doing well... 32 lbs down. I was what I guess is considered a lightweight, 232 being my highest. With that being said, I suffered from sleep apnea, used cpap, have osteoarthritis in both knees , GERD with Barrets Esophagus and my A1C was creeping up each time it was checked. I am 45 years old and a nurse, a nurse who has a weight requirement for her job and I couldn't make the weight anymore..... I have crash dieted, done everything from programs to HCG to cutting weight like an MMA fighter... 6 yrs ago I lost 60# and have gained back 70...I have always struggled. Nearly everyone who I shared my intention to have a gastric bypass had either some horror story ( I get it.. the only RNY pts I took care of had something that had gone terribly wrong) or people would tell me that I didn't need it, I didn't look "that big" you carry your weight so well! I was open with folks bc I am off work for over a month and will look a little more slender when I return.... Since my surgery, I have heard no negative comments, and preop someone even shared with me that they were jealous... they wanted a more sure bet in the weight loss arena... My point is, I feel better, physically and emotionally and I no longer snore ( husband is very grateful for that.) This has not been the easiest, I have felt nauseous sometimes, sad sometimes and even a little remorse....but, I think back to how I felt everyday when I woke up and looked in the mirror, how my knees hurt, how I worried about my long term health, not to mention my job! I hated me. Now, I don't. I am hopeful, I am happier, I am more confident. Let the naysayers talk, smile and nod, make your decision because you know it is right for you and when it is all said an done, you'll find peace. -sorry if I ramble a bit!
  5. I have the same problem. I spend 2-3 hrs in the gym 3-5 days a week or if I can't go to the gym I workout at the house pretty much the same amount of time. I've being in a stall for almost two months now and they sent me to eat every two hrs and I simply can't put all that food in my stomach. They told me I've being burning the double of calories I'm consuming. And is so frustrating bc I don't want any batwings or anything hanging in my body. I will take your advice and do less days and try to eat more. Let's see if I brake this stall.

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

Yes I still test my BS, but not as frequently as I did pre-surgery. I tested this morning and my fasting was 75, which is excellent. I have been following a low-carb diet since December of last year. Before I had my surgery a low carb diet and 2 medications was the only way I could get my A1C down to acceptable levels. I have not tried a strictly plant based diet since having diabetes so I really don't know if it will work. I have just started reading the book, and so far it is very good. My apologies to @Newme17 for getting this thread off the topic of the book and on to diabetes.

This is what I am researching now. I know from my bs testing, grains, whole or otherwise raised my blood sugar quite a lot. It could be that my insulin secreation was also higher, but I can't test that at home. My diabetes is in remission since my surgery and I am off all medication except for my thyroid. I want to keep it that way so I am going to research this well before I dive in. I have the book on my kindle now.

    Swallowing pills post op

I had this worry too! I am doing just fine 9 days post op with getting 3 pills down at once. They are smaller pills, but it works. At the hospital they took me off my blood pressure medicine bc I don't need it as of now, and those were bigger pills. So it might be a different story if I was still on them.

I haven't read the book yet, but I am interested and wanted to ask some questions. I copied these statements from the article @Newme17 posted. Another problem is that the carbohydrate-insulin theory also presumes that carbohydrates have some unique relationship with insulin causing the latter to spike. However, when you examine the insulinogenic index (a measure of how much eating food increases insulin per unit calorie), you see that protein-rich foods like beef increase insulin secretion as much as carbohydrate-rich foods like pasta. I have had type 2 diabetes for almost 4 years and through my testing I can absolutely confirm that consuming whole grains does in fact raise my blood sugar a lot. In fact, it raises it much more than eating protein from meats as long as the serving sizes are equal. I could eat a 4 oz steak and not have a significant rise in my BS, but if I ate 4oz of whole wheat pasta it would spike more than 60 points. I haven't tested this since having surgery because I am afraid to awake the sleeping giant and have been staying away from grains. From my testing I can safely eat 15g of carb at a meal and have my BS only go up 20-25 points and it comes back down nicely within 2 hours. I ate a little more carbs then usual last week, and I did notice a slight increase in my fasting BS. It was up in the 90's instead of the usual 75-83 it has been. Most of my carbs last week were from fruit, apples, grapes, and watermelon. This was the first time I had eaten these types of fruits since my surgery. I was testing the waters a little and I think my body handled it well, but I didn't push it. I ate small amounts. My question is: Are there any type 2 diabetics that have switched to a plant based diet that includes whole grains and cured their diabetes? Did you get off your medications? If having WLS surgery cured your diabetes as I think mine has, have you started eating whole grains again and still have your diabetes in remission?

    Opioid Malabsorption

I'm 6 years out from treatment after a high grade, Stage IIIC, hormone positive BC. I had 3 recon surgeries after the treatments and the first surgery, a double mast/1st recon. I have excruciating neuropathy about 9inches wide almost 360 degrees around my chest and neuropathy in both feet from hand-foot syndrome during chemo. The neuro drugs don't touch the pain. I also have some bone changes in my spine and hip that add to that pain load--so sleeping for longer than 2 hours in any other position is impossible--and I have to sleep in a reclining chair. I do have a script for Norco and muscle relaxants and I guard them like a demon. I ration when I take one of them because I know it costs my PCP plenty to prescribe them--so I try to keep it to 1 script per year. I have to be at an 11 (cuz you know...my amps go up to 11--thanks Spinal Tap) before I take one because: 1.) I know they are rarer than hen's teeth and there might come a day when I will need them worse than today. 2.) They make me gain 5 pounds of fluid overnight. I resist going the pain manager route because I don't want to be on drugs like Celebrex or Lyrica that also have weight gain as a side effect. Mostly I don't want to be on daily pain pills, nor do I want to surrender autonomy (the right to take a pain pill ONLY when I need one) for a pain script. I also don't want the stigma attached to being a patient seen by a PMC. I see both sides of the argument and am sympathetic to both the prescriber and the patient. I also understand how easy it could be to become an addict (and that by nature of the addiction, addicts will lie and might sell their grandmother for a fix). It sucks that a few bad apples spoil the pie and make everyone's position so difficult. Sorry you're experiencing such difficulties. Pain and quality of life--man--it's a fargin' marathon. I look ahead at a life expectancy for me and sometimes get super sad, because no way do I want to live endure 25-30 more years in this pain-filled world. I'm shooting the dice and optimistic that losing weight down to a normal BMI might help my pain/recurrence experience.

    PAINFUL ORGASM..still in pain

This is way below where your surgery was, so my guess is they're unrelated. I was active at 5 weeks and just had to do positions that avoided my belly bc of tenderness. Does it feel like sore lower abdominal muscles? I really don't think you could go through that end and give yourself a leak. Don't go to the ER unless it's an emergency and for that don't go to your closest most frequented ER. Trust me on that as a nurse. Tell your surgeon. You don't have to say specifics just say you had engaged in sexual activity and now this is what you're feeling and aren't sure if the two are related.

    Social Drinking?

After reading posts on here, there are huge differences in what the docs say. Mine said no carbonation ever. No alcohol for a year, better if never again. Full of empty calories, and said that many people become dependent bc of depression from having the surgery.
  14. My surgeon only wants us drinking fruit slushes for two weeks. It's hard bc literally all I'm having is fruit and water. When I think of cheating I just think of how much I need this surgery and how it's only 11 more days. Will power is key. Stay hydrated with water between whatever your "meals" are frfr bc if you drink enough water you won't feel the hunger. I'm on day 4 and I feel a lot of the cravings going away already.
  15. Well, I'm a new one here. After much waiting, my surgery day is tomorrow. I'm scared, anxious, and excited all at the same time. I really hope this is the right decision and that I come out on the other end where I hope to be. I've struggled with food my entire life an fed up with heartache dealing with my weight. I'm very nervous tonight... jason

    ENSURE/GLUCERNA

Thanks for that suggestion!!! I will def be trying that. I miss yogurt! I currently took the dive & having some mashed potatoes bc I have literally been getting in maybe 100-200 calories and every time I get up I get blurry vision and dizzy. Have been wanting yogurt and I was already an avid fairlife milk fan. Thank ya'll!!!! Today seems like a better day

    Food Cravings

I've been given an Rex for Pepcid (famotadine) but I am going to talk about switching to Prilosec bc the Pepcid seems to not agree with me. Maybe this will help.
  18. I'm not a fan of this show, I usually find myself getting very upset as I see that person take advantage of their health and life. Sure, most have severe issues and some are just plain lazy and could not give two craps about themselves. Now, every now and then, you do have some that are raised to be unhealthy. From day one, their parents fed them and lacked loving and building solid adults and for them, I do enjoy watching their reach for success.

    Food Cravings

I am one week post op gastric sleeve and I feel pretty good. I'm struggling to get enough liquid at times I think. And I know I'm deficient in protein. I'm still on full liquids. The shakes don't taste the same as they did before. I feel like I'm so freaking hungry....maybe it's mental bc why on earth would anyone dream of eating frozen burritos..yet here I am doing just that. I hope it gets easier. I have two more weeks of full liquids before purée foods. Anyone have any suggestions?
  20. I haven't told anyone at work, although they oknew I was having surgery. Most people didn't even ask what type of surgery. A few people did and I just said I've had a few surgeries before and this is just another one. When a gal at work told me I look great and asked me how much I've lost, I told her the total I've lost since April, which is pre op weight loss too! My in laws know because my mother in less came to help after surgery, so that whole side of family knows bc she is a talker. Other than my husband and a few friends, it's just me. I would tell people if it came up or if someone struggling asked me. But not otherwise right now.
  21. Getting revision done from sleeve to bypass on August 21 anybody who has done the same by the way is because of gerd
  22. Hi guys! Just wondered if anyone had any food ideas for puréed stage? I am getting a bit fed up of puréed chicken and carrots lol! Thanks in advance! xXx
  23. I'm really looking forward to soft foods bc the "sweetness" of all the yogurts/cottage cheese/pudding is killing me. I'm adding cream soups too but really can't wait to venture out. Anyone else feeling like the healing spirit s better than expected? Or am I fooling myself? Also wondering what the deal with coffee is- I went back to work yesterday as I only sit at my job and I have no pain - but I was definitely tired and would've loved a small black coffee. Have to wait until Friday to ask my docs.

JULY SLEEVERS- How are you doing?

Hey all... I was sleeved on the 28th...slowly starting to feel like myself again. The constipation is brutal! I am about 4 days post op and can drink at least 4 oz every 20 mins or so, even more... I am trying to moderate it bc the nutritionist said to drink no more than 2 oz every 20 mins while awake. Protein shakes less so than water but still more than 2-4 oz. Just wondering if this is normal?
  25. Hi, What my surgeons told me is the body fights its hardest to return to normal, but it can't bc it's been changed, permanently. Generally, the malabsorption does lessen somewhat after a few years and then usually reaches its set point. Does your stomach give you any pain while it's gurgling? Do you have gas or diarrhea? When is the the last time you did a course of Flagyl? May be time to sort things out.
