sunshinelady... Omg I could have written your post! I am tracking every bite, getting in about 1000 calories a day and walking 20 minutes a day and no loss! I even gained 3 pounds this week! I just dont understand that if I easily ate 2500 calories before surgery, and cutting back as much as I am, why aren't I losing weight??????? I am very discouraged but will keep on going... I guess it will eventually pay off... At least I hope.

I gained 3 pounds and then sat there for a month between weeks 7 and 11. I was super nauseous from a medication I was taking and could barely eat or drink anything. As soon as I was off the Meds I doubled my Water and calorie intake and lost 8 pounds in one week. In the meantime, while I wasn't losing I dropped a whole pant size. That's just the way this WLS thing goes. As usual, my best advice is drink lots of water, get in all your Protein, take your Vitamins, eat healthy, exercise and stay OFF the scale.

Well, first off, congrats on what you have lost, and congrats and catching the problem early before it gets too out of hand and wanting to correct it. You know the band rules; start to follow them again. Get your fill and start to watch your portions. Count your calories and make sure you get all of your water in. Good luck and you can do this! -

4 weeks post, ravenous

I do feel more full when I eat more solid/dense foods - for instance string cheese or soft babybels, crab sticks, etc will leave me feeling more satisfied with less, and for longer. But I can easily take in 6 oz of either of the former in a sitting. That's the amount my NUT told me to expect to take in, but based on feelings earlier in the process (and what other people tell me) I should be very full having eaten those. That's suddenly no longer the case. I *am* losing weight though, so part of me thinks that as I ramp up physical activity, I just plain need more calories to keep myself going. -
I eat between 700-900 calories a day, and drink 64-70 ounces of Water.

I was sleeved on Jan 20th and I'm down 30 lbs. On most days I'll use every calorie that MFP has to offer for that day. Occasionally I'll eat about 800 a day but no matter what I get in my Protein, Water and Vitamins. Having said that, I average a weight loss of about 3 pounds a week. My question is... Will we still loose if we eat the allotted MFP calories per day/per weight?

I recently read that you can not build muscle while losing weight. The article said you can tone what you have but not build. I'm not sure whether it is true or not but it makes sense. You have to have something to 'build with' - enough calories and Protein but it seems like our diets are enough protein to try and prevent muscle loss not add muscle. I too have had stalls starting pretty early, the scale does not budge for a month then I lose a spurt then stall again. It is frustrating but probably partly due to the fact that I'm turning 50, in perimenopause and also have PCOS. Surgery doesn't fix all those things so while it was nice to have the first 60 pounds or so melt, the next 15 were a lot harder to get off as I am sure will be the remaining 50 I'd like to lose. What is frustrating is to have the surgeon or nut suggest you may not be following the eating plan. I don't think PCOS cares how I eat. In the end I have changed my habits and feel better for it and hope the weight will keep slowly coming off. Once the crazy 1-2 pound a day weight loss stopped and I started stalling I too had the 3 D's but then just stopped weighing myself so often and decided I would just have to be patient.

You may need to increase your calories if working out that much. Good loss so far!

Hi, Melinda! Welcome to the losers' bench! I'm just over five months out and life is good! Like you, I had a terrible time with Protein drinks at the beginning. I finally gave up on the powdered shakes altogether and now I drink the Premier Nutrition ready-to-drink chocolate protein shakes. I get them at costco but you can also buy them online here: Premier Nutrition - Diet, organic, and low carb, Protein Bars, protein powders, protein supplements and health supplements and here: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Premier-Protein-Shakes-18-11oz-shakes/dp/B001O213RM/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1282520693&sr=8-3-fkmr1]Amazon.com: Premier Protein - High Protein Ready To Drink Shakes, 18-11oz shakes: Health &…[/ame]. I have one for Breakfast every morning and at 30 grams of protein in 180 calories, it gives me a good jumpstart on my protein fo the day. I'm a lightweight and I've been a very slow loser, but I'm more than halfway to my goal, and less than 6 pounds from a "normal" BMI, so I'm happy with my progress even though it hasn't been as fast as I'd hoped. I have really challenged myself to NOT make myself miserable every time the scale slows down or stops, and for the most part it's worked out well for me. One thing that has just been wonderful is that almost all of my compulsive eating urges are gone. I still have "head hunger," but the reality is that I just plain cannot eat like I used to, so binging like I used to is out of the question. And I am constantly -- like, every. single. meal. -- amazed at how little I eat and how satisfied I am with that little bit. It feels so good to be a light eater instead of the volume eater I had been all my life! I only started doing much exercise a month or so ago, and I've really been enjoying it. I work with a trainer at the gym twice a week, and take a dance class twice a week, and try to get in a good long walk at least once or twice a week. It feels great to be getting stronger! And the exercise seems to have jump-started my weight loss some, too. Hang in there and know that it will get easier every week from now on! -

Water Nazi, What an interesting name you have on this site : ) Congratulations on your date. I wish you an routine surgery and an easy recovery. I'm glad my doc didn't limit my salad size. Maybe they're worried you'll use a lot of higher calorie dressing? When I was on my pre-op-I did the reverse of what I do now. Veggies first then protein. I also drank at least 8 oz. of water before I ate. The water and veggies filled up my stomach and then the protein kept me satiated longer. Kathleen -

I agree that maybe the problem is not ENOUGH calories. 800 sounds so very low. I don't know how it works, but I do know my weight stalls whenever I drink only protein shakes or I don't eat at least 1000 calories a day. I know science doesn't support this phenomenon, but I experience it myself and hear about it from others a lot. I wish some doctors would not automatically doubt their patients' reports. We need to be a team and be on the same page. Sounds like your doctor has some knowledge and understanding of a person needing adequate calorie intake for weight loss! ~hiddn -

Sounds like you go to my FORMER surgeon who was an idiot. You should have a good relationship with your doctor and he shouldn't be in your face about anything. While others have posted about your calories in vs calories out, I want to focus on your relationship with your doctor. You should not have an adversarial relationship with him and should not have to even consider an altercation happening. He should be there to help you. It is his job to get the band filled to the point that you are at your sweet spot and small amounts of healthy foods satisfy you for several hours. If I were you I would look for a new doctor. If you aren't willing to do that, then ask to meet with the nutritionist and discuss this with him/her. These people should be supportive. And if you're having trouble losing, it is their job to figure out why and offer constructive help. I would not put up with a surgeon like this and indeed I didn't - which is why I switched doctors 7 months after my surgery, which was over 2 years ago. Best move I ever made - and I discovered how a supportive doctor is supposed to deal with patients. You will now probably dread going to your appointments and that is never good. I hope you are able to find a satisfactory solution to this problem. Good luck. -
Did you gain the muscle back?
pinkbunies replied to Justoperated's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take testosterone shots each week which help with building muscle. If you don't get enough Protein your not going to gain muscle. You can most definitely gain muscle. Look into Testosterone injections. It is a huge help. I found out that my Testosterone numbers dropped drastically after surgery. They upped my dose and I'm back to normal. The weight loss has slowed for me, but I'm still losing inches and my waist size continues to shrink. I also need to up my calorie intake. Back to eating ice cream every night again. Last time I did that, I think I lost 9 lbs in a 7 day period. -
Is it to good to be true. I have not had any complications or been tired at all. I feel like it is too good to be true. At seven days post op I'm getting in 50 ounces of Water daily and about 55 grams of Protein daily totaling about 300 calories. I am NOT tired at all throughout the day. I just wonder if it is going to catch up with me. I had originally planned to take two weeks off of work. But now that I feel great I'm going to go back to work after 1 week off.

Be aware that there is significant hunger involved. It takes most people a few fills to feel they are satisfied with less food. The actual surgery was a piece of cake for me. Only asked for pain meds in the hospital once. Took the perkeset I was sent home with occasionly. I found the worst pain was when moving around a lot. The band is a great tool (I've lost 32 pounds in 2 months) but you still have to do the work. I count calories and protien grams. I log everything I eat everyday. Hope this helps in making such a big descision!

Well, just having the lap band seems to be enough incentive for some people to eat less and exercise. Only you know will know whether it's enough for you. However, I *HATE* to exercise and having a band put in me didn't give me any more incentive to do so. Keep in mind that if you played three sports, you were burning a lot of calories. You might be horrified at how much time you have to spend in a gym to burn that same number of calories. A band helps in that it limits the number of calories you can eat at one sitting. It won't stop you from grazing all day or eating slider foods (and many sweets are slider foods). . .

eating as a form of enjoyment after the surgery
brenda62 replied to james42's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
If you look a lot of places post their calories for the meals. I check on line first before I go, I can then order without worry. (if they don't have a list out ask) I eat healthy and in small amounts. I have had a very easy time with my lap-band until this last fill on Monday. Now there are a few things I cannot eat but for the most part I eat what I want. Protein first, then veggies, and if I still have room.......that is rare to still have room! As for doing it again, I would in a heartbeat! It is the best thing I have done in a long time and is worth anything you go through to get it. -
How much fat do you consume?
ItsMe2033 replied to ecip78824's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lot's of people have a stall at the 3 week point, so I think that is what is going on in your case, so just stick with the plan and you will be fine. Your NUT has probably given you three numbers to focus on. 1) Ounces of Fluid per day 2) Grams of Protein per day 3) Total calories per day As long as you are sticking by those numbers, it doesn't really matter how the calories are distributed. I would encourage you to always reach your protein goal. I think you should probably aim for 80 grams of protein instead of 60. Are you drinking Protein Shakes? There are also tons of threads on here about alternatives to protein shakes if you aren't drinking them. As far as other calories are concerned, they can come from protein, fat, or carbs. If you have a certain level of protein intake, and if you want to keep your calories the same then if you cut carbs then you must increase fat. There is nothing to be concerned about here. Remember that my fitness pal is a general website, not one geared specifically to people who have had weight loss surgery. I'm glad that you've made the decision to cut back on your carbs. As long as you are meeting your three targets (fluids, protein, and total calories) then don't worry about your fat consumption. To answer your specific question,I try to get 800 - 1000 calories per day. If I consume 125 grams of protein in a day, that's 500 calories. The other 500 have to come from the remaining groups. In my case I generally consume 20 - 30 grams of carbs per day, so the rest will come from fat. 30 grams of carbs is 120 calories, which means that I will consume 380 calories of fat, or 42 grams of fat per day. -
Hoping To Get Back On Track.....

I think you are wrong to keep getting fills if you are eating baby food and still drinking Protein drinks. You will never be at the right place with regards to fills if you are not eating real food ALL the time. You cannot live your entire life eating mushies and Protein Drinks. If you do not think you are getting enough protein in, talk to your NUT. At three months, they had me off all liquid Protein. I don't count protein anymore. Just follow the rule of only eating when hungry and when you do eat, it is 3 oz protein, 1/4 c veg and 1/4 c good carb. Most days it is under 600 calories. Don't worry so much about getting all these fills, learn how to eat real food. You have a lifetime ahead of you and you need to learn how to put real fuel in your system without getting stuck, throwing up or only being able to drink. I am shocked to hear that people think it is ok for these things to be "normal." -
I have to say, I find I DO have to diet with the band (ducking Donali throwing something at me......!!!!) I haven't very much restriction, and am not interested in being too tight as I worry about being far away from any band doctor in an emergency. I calorie/fat/protein count everyday now, and I am losing weight. I couldn't eat a lot of bread/pasta etc but can still eat a fairly substantial meal - and junk goes down easily - cookies/chocolate etc - so I have to stick to a progam - I "plateau-ed" for over three months by not watching what I ate, and I became really depressed and felt a failure....I feel more in control now and proud of losing weight more, as I feel I work WITH the band....if I stay away from craving-inducing sugar, I don't feel hungry - some times I don't know what is working - me obsessed with numbers (adding the calories etc), avoiding sugar or the band! Maybe it's all three! Dunno if this is any help but as Michelle said, everyone works the band their way...
