Welcome Megan. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Your insights into the gastric bypass are invaluable. I think we are lucky to have you and Wendy come here and be willing to share your realities with us, since they are so different from our own, being banded and all. I don't kow how long you've been lurking here, but just so you know, we are an international board, with several very active members from the UK, AZ as well as other points inbetween!

There are many insurance companies that will pay for gastric bypass but won't pay for lap band. My insurance company will not pay for any WLS, so I had to self pay. Many people on this board pay for their own surgeries out of pocket. Mine was just under $10,000 and I flew to Colorado to have it done.

Need Advice, Kaiser SoCal Patient.
chargers56 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello I am new to this forum so please bear with me. I am 30 years old, male 285 lbs with a bmi of 38. I have hypertention, gerd, high cholestorol, and back and joint pain, along with depression about my weight. I went to an appointment at Kaiser Permanente here is San Diego today and asked my doctor about LapBand and Sleeve. She didnt seem to know much about either or maybe did not want to talk to me about the details which really made me angry, but she did say that it might be a good choice for me. This was after she told me of the positive choice program and other options. I have had problems with weight and dieting does not help. I have been on medifast and HMR while supervised with my old doctor through insurance at a previous job. Anyway after she referred me for what she called bariatric evaluation and gave me a number I called them. They are sending me a packet and want me to come to a meeting held each monday. Here are my questions for you guys. My doctor did not say if they support the sleeve, she just said gastric bypass. Also I really dont want to have to go through 6 months of a supervised diet. I have no problem with waiting or waiting 6 months to do the classes for the surgery. Anyone have Kaiser in Southern California? Specifically San Diego? I could really use some support and advice. Thank you. -
It's when some food goes straight through you. I have this problem with milk post-op. I can drink regular milk and be in the bathroom (TMI) pooping it out in minutes. It's NOT common for sleevers, but it is common for gastric bypass and RNY patients. Mine is because I'm now lactose intolerant.

Will i loose before november
IMWORTHIT2013 replied to kooks3003's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
40 lbs before November - I think so! I have lost 30lbs in one month since surgery. I was a lower BMI ( I was 5'5 210) but it is just falling off of me. I make sure to follow all of the things my surgeon tells me! I agree the seamstress is gonna go nuts with you! Good luck and prayers to you. -
Pre-op tests that I am having anyway
Travelmego replied to Travelmego's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Do I need to have my doctor change the reason for the tests? I had him put for bariatric surgery on the referral. However, I can surely need these tests just in and of themselves for diabetes and being overweight. My insurance does cover bariatric bypass but not the sleeve. However, I don't want the bypass hence Mexico. Also, it is a pain trying to get accepted for the surgery anyway. If he already did the referral for bariatric, can I go and change it? Or will they be like, 'nice try but too late you already said bariatric'? -

Candy - i would say it can't hurt, might help. Darn it! I have a feeling I need to call the referral lady tomorrow and ask her to send them AGAIN but coded for like just the regular stuff. My insurance pays for gastric bypass but with it being a pre-approval thing - I just have this feeling that @@Kindle and @@SnohoGal98296 are right and I need to have it redone. She is going to hate me lol. -

I had my surgery on May 3, 2010 and I started this adventure a year earlier trying to convince my company that this was the right thing to do! I was pretty convincing and they aproved my surgery. On 4/19/2010 I weighed in at 345lbs with a BMI of 49.6. I currenty as of this date weigh 280lbs. I have lost more weight in the last 6 weeks than I had over the past 4 years. My wife said I am loosing it 2 fast but I feel good! This was not without some pain and frustration but that you probably know already. I felt like I had made the mistake of my life the day after surgery but I have since changed my mind. Had I not taken this step I probably would not be here in 3 to 5 years. My wife had a lap band done in 1996 and had great weight loss until 2005 when it broke and damaged her stomach. She had to have an emergency gastric bypass but has had some issues with this surgery. The picture above was from 2006 and I have not had a picture of me taken since. That will be changing! I am having some problems with eating 6 weeks after surgery and I am still having to puree all my food. I have tried multiple times to eat small amounts of food that is not ground up to a pulp and have had no success. I will be seeing my Dr. on Wednesday and this is one issue I want him to talk to me about. I also have a wierd experience when I eat with my nose starts running and I then have to sneeze for about 10 minutes. I thought maybe I had a a food alergie but it happens no matter what I eat. Is this a problem with anybody else? Let me know. I am walking 3.5 miles every day and today I pushed it to 5 miles with no side affects. I plan to step it up a mile a week until I get to the wall! In closing I want to hear from some of you about what issues you are having and maybe we can work together to help each other. Thanks for the support! Jim P.S. the 1SunMoney name is my Poker name.

Just thought I'd take a moment to say hi and introduce myself. I'm Kathy and have been researching and contemplating WLS since November of last year. I actually had surgery for something uncomplicated and unrelated and first heard about the sleeve from my general surgeon. Her practice is entirely WLS, but she assisted in my surgery as a favor to a colleague. She invited me to find out more about WLS. Initially, I thought I'd be set on the Lapband. After attending a seminar, though, I decided the sleeve could be a viable option. I researched, changed jobs, and researched some more. I set an appointment and followed up with the surgeon I'd developed a rapport with, only to then find out my insurance has a specific exclusion for WLS. I was basically back to square one... Then lucky for me, I stumbled across information about self-pay and the option of surgery in Mexico. I tend to be a researcher by nature and have spent months gathering information, making lists and spreadsheets, and talking the few people who know about my plans to death over it all. I think I have decided upon a surgeon (not sharing until I have heard back on final emails I've sent) and am excited about the prospect. With my work schedule and my boyfriend's, I'm hoping to schedule in October sometime. I anticipate placing a deposit and scheduling in the next couple of weeks. I read the rest of the board, but tend to come back to this area over and over, since I have been trying to narrow down surgeons and read more about Mexico experiences. Anyway, <waving> just saying hello!

Hi Shortgal & Sharona, Thanks for your words of support. Shortgal, your weightloss is great! Anything "lost" is always a plus. It's the up and down that I couldn't take anymore. I had did Jenny Craig for about 2 months, but besides being expensive to stay on, when I stopped I gained all the weight back, and plus some!! That's when I started thinking that the smaller portions do work, I lost 15 lbs, but when I stopped, like I said it all came back as usual. That's what really got me thinking about the band. Two of my friends had done gastric bypass about 8 years ago. One did and is still doing great! She follows exactly how she is to eat and drink and watches her portions. The other has stretched her pouch to where she is eating as much, if not more, than when she began. Watching both of them, I feel that I am ready to take on this new lifestyle. I think I'll be more careful about my choices and I do realize this only a TOOL to help me lose the weight. It is not a guarantee. I have about 100 lbs. to lose. You both are doing so well, and are a great inspiration to me to know that it actually can be done!

Hi, my name in Kim, I'm 47 years old and I was banded last november the 24th of 2008. I was 301 when I started, and right now I am at 253, depending on whose scale you are wieghting me on. The Doctors scale has me at 260. My surgeon is Dr. McCririe from Hillsdale Michigan. He's been great in the whole process with me. I know there are no stupid questions, but sometimes I am afraid to ask for fear I will look like a fool. I have a problem. I've been fighting pneumonia and sinus infections, but I'm on antibiotics and am getting better. I have noticed that about 3 to 4 days after I get a fill, I start running a fever. I must be really close to my sweet spot, because after this last fill, I was keeping water down at first, but now I can hardly keep my own spit down. I've lost about 10 to 13 pounds in a week. I'm not urinating much and when I do it is a darker gold then usual. I've also noticed my skin is getting so dry. Does anyone know if dehydration could be causing all of this. I am going into the Doctors office tomorrow for an adjustment. I think 1cc was just a little too much for me this time. I look forward to hearing from you and sharing in your experiences. Kim, Camden Michigan

Is there a reason that you dont want to do gastric bypass?? Did you do a lot of research on the sleeve?? Sometimes..a few yrs later.. people come back to get the bypass...im just looking at how much you want to lose ... you r diabetic as well...do you have GERD? OHHH i hope i didnt sound too negative and nor meant to confuse you...there r alot of people getting the sleeve..but from my research not enough long term studies of it and as i stated seems that many come back to get bypass.. i went straight to bypass...am almost y weeks out....no complications... im Canadian and think Mexicos hospital and staff provide wayyy better service and hospitality than what we get here. Good luck!!

Abby - Northern California Kaisers are in their infancy in regards to the lap band. I know, I went through the SSF Kaiser program and was banded 12/12/07. They've been at is a little over a year. This is why most of their recommendations and information is spill over from gastric bypass stuff. You need to do your own research so that you can peel the GB stuff away and find out what you need to do. Lap band patients aren't effected by alcohol like GB patients are. Alcohol no matter what form it is consumed in is still empty calories and if used more than occassionally will prevent your weight loss from being good if at all. But one of the nice things is you can plan a nice cool one into your day and enjoy it. I think that the reason your boyfriend might not be on board is because he may be afraid that you won't like/love him when you loose weight. As obese people we tend to have low self-esteme. He might also be afraid that you will try to pressure him into getting the surgery. You have to decide to do this because it's what you want to do and not because someone else approves or disapproves. If your relationship is good, it will survive. If it's not good, this might be the excuse he needs to leave or for you to leave him. Only you can answer that one. My DH was afraid for me because it was surgery and he didn't know how WLS worked. He went with me to my appointments and a seminar and learned what there was to know. He still sweated the surgery but he is so happy I'm finally loosing the weight and active again. He's been so supportive. Sit down and write out why you want to loose weight. Put on the list how it will affect your kids lives as well. Then do a list of why you shouldn't have the surgery. Then compare them. I'm so sorry about your friend. I am so happy that the lapband was an option for me because I think GB should be put in the category of only to be done if nothing else can help. It scares me. PM me if you want. I know how frustrating Kaiser's programs can be from first hand experience. They are so slow because they are so overwhelmed with the number of people wanting WLS. There are only 3 Kaisers in No. Cal doing the surgeries. I think there is less in So. Cal. Until they get more hospitals on board they will be buried. Good luck and whatever you do, do it for you.

Still considering lap band surgery
dafintn replied to lking's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was banded two days ago and the operation was smooth. This was my first time in a hospital so, I was alittle nervous. If you look at your alternatives.... lap band is the best way to go. Bypass is far more dangerous. -
Care After Surgery in Mexico?
KristenVSG2014 replied to jaczim's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I gave my surgical notes, leak test and blood work done in Mexico to my PCP. He has done followup blood work for me at 3 months and I'm going to get my second set of bloodwork tomorrow. Then I'll see him at my one year surgiversary in November. No complications for me! -
Has anyone lost and then regained ALL of their weight?
luckysmomma replied to AussieLady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't. I am only 8 weeks out. A good friend of mine had gastric bypass several years ago; she has gained/lost/gained/lost. She is still continually 'dieting' just like before surgery. I hope I don't end up that way, but if a person doesn't change their lifestyle/food relationship...I can see it happening easily. -
Hey guys, where is everyone at? I’m 8 months out and have been at a stall since the end of November. I am down to 215 from 275 and my goal is 180-185.
