  1. You are not alone in the anxiety. I plan on telling people I’m doing keto once I start losing. Just take a second to remember why you’re doing this.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Has anyone had very bad chills upon waking up in the middle of the night. Had a whole body aches yesterday afternoon then woke up in the middle of the night just now with major chills. Not sure if this could be keto flu or something else. Anyone have any similar symptoms

    Keto diet

Lol do some research. Drinking ketones just makes your pee say your back in ketosis. But your Not. If you eat loads of carbs then drink that it will show ketosis reading but you are not in the actual fat burning keto mode. Its just showing it in your pee. It takes the exact amount of time to get back on track except the potion makes you believe your in genuine ketosis when its just you peeing out what you drank

    Keto diet

The data used in the link I provided does provide as much data as is available. It's why I cited it rather than one of the journals where you see the results but no data, or where other people would have to pay for access to see the data. Nothing is perfect, but as pointed out earlier, whatever diet that someone can comply with that is healthy is likely the best for them. For some this is the keto diet. In my case, my pre-operative weight loss was exclusively because of this diet after the misery of the first few weeks attempting a liquid diet drinking carb-laden "Glucerna" which is supposed to be for diabetics, yet was demanded by my RD. What I find more about people on the keto diet is they tend to be more informed about the effects of it. Vastly different than the similar Atkins fad where people had no idea what they were doing, just jumping on a bandwagon because commercials.

    Keto Rash

With us eating low carbs and high protein and probably falling into ketosis, has anyone experienced a keto rash? I had a rash on my arm a week ago and today have one on my neck. I heard someone on YouTube mention "keto rash" and had never heard of it. Just wondering if my rash is temporarily something else or if in fact it could be "keto rash".

    December Surgery Buddies!

Yay! Same day for my sleeve. Started my pre-op on Nov 22nd. I'm doing my best with my 2 shakes a day but their brand is wearing on me bad. I had to start adding a few drops of water flavoring to them to get them down lol. and Then getting mighty tired of bland chicken and 1 of 5 green veggies a night :(. Had my education class and my per-surgery assessment is on Tuesday and the Wed after its surgery! My surgeons office throws us into keto on the preop and its throwing off my walking bad. But I just keep the thought that I won't have to fight my body any longer.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

@Carla Ogwin it’s weird everything was fine with the sugar free packets until this week so idk what happened. I’ve had ground beef but it was low fat and I just had alittle in a bean meat and cheese keto street taco. Today I had 2 spoon fulls of refried beans, 2 cut up grilled chicken nuggets from Chick-fil-A with alittle cheese and it was so good. I thought I was drinking too soon, or eating too fast as well but I think it’s just the sugar free drinks. I might try them again in a few weeks. There was about 5 days were my weight didn’t change and I was so sad but then it went down but it’s definitely going down closer now than it did which idk if I like that.

    Keto diet

I've lost nearly 80 pounds on a 3 month pre-op effectively on the keto diet. Not something I'd personally want to do on a permanent basis (some of the underlying rationales behind this diet I will keep, such as very low carbs), but no doubts whatsoever it, like the surgery, has/will be an effective tool for my goal of weight loss. Some of the other benefits I've had during this pre-op diet: - Stage 3 liver fibrosis: Significant liver improvement on liver function tests and fibroscan showing dramatic shrinking and softening, all liver function tests normal for first time in 1-2 years. I was heading toward cirrhosis (non-alcoholic), now liver is heading toward being healed. - Type 2 diabetes: hBA1c from 7.9 to 5.7, often times scoring 4.4-4.6 on fasts. I expect my June 1st hBA1c to likely take me off the rest of my diabetes meds. (being taken off 1 of my diabetes meds, Forxiga, immediately on Thursday) - Spinal injury: L5/S1 compression fracture, significantly more pain relief due to losing weight - RHR improved from 90-100 to 50-60 - BP improved from 150-170/110-120 to 110-125/70-90, being taken off one BP meds (hydrochlorothiazide) immediately on Thursday To say the keto diet has been beneficial has been an understatement, especially compared to the crappy RD's demands of liquid pre-op (consisting of just about entirely Glucerna, the crappiest overpriced meal replacement drink you'll ever taste) for 3 months.

    Keto diet

This book is a good place to start so you can understand the science. The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living: An Expert Guide to Making the Life-Saving Benefits of Carbohydrate Restriction Sustainable and Enjoyable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005CVV2AE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Bus7ybP5P45SW Just like WLS understanding the science behind it makes it easier to understand, follow and make the right choices. /r/keto on reddit is a great place to start. I am just going to warn you. Keto is a commitment just like WLS. It isn't a diet it is a lifestyle and a way of eating. If you stop eating keto and go back to carbs the weight will pile on. Keto is not some fad diet you can follow for a little while drop weight and go back to eating trash. If you can't commit to it for life, there is no reason to even start. Keto replaces carbs with fat to keep you satisfied and once you are keto adapted your body runs on fat.

    Keto diet

Most people that long term Keto are calories aware, even if they aren't strict even with non restrictive stomach. Long term successful people fast also, which I do. A high fat diet makes it easy to fast (the original purpose of bulletproof coffee, to extend a fast). Fasting has its own benefits and I'm not even going to go too far into that First it is really important to know your body composition you can calculate your macros correctly. Most people that really Keto track (I notice anyone that is successful at any kind of way of eating or diet tracks). I use a Keto calculator and peg my protein to my lean mass 1g per 1 pound. This one is good https://ketogains.com/ketogains-calculator/ The math on that one is supposed to be better but I use this one because I like it better because of the loss projection chart. https://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ As a sleever if you are meeting your protein goals, it is going to be almost impossible to get your calories too high just because of the low calorie count of protein, the density of protein and restriction. If I didn't use heavy cream in my coffee, I would never hit my fat goals. 120 grams of protein a day doesn't leave much room for anything else.

    Keto diet

There is a great site called RULE ME and it helps tyou figure out what you need to be successful. They have plenty of recipes too. My hubby tried the KETO diet thru a person who sets up everything and sends you recipes for your prep work. But he found he didn't care for most of the things she had sent him recipes for. Also we found it to be really expensive to follow. Because we had WLS we thought it was going to help us. But the truth is you can figure out what you need to eat and get tons of recipes on PINTREST. Plus the recipes that were sent to us I had to go online to look up every one of them. They sent the sites email for you to look up. I really think there are many many programs online to help us with that. Hope everything goes ok for you.

    Keto diet

That's a nice wall of text there but you didn't refute a single thing in this paper, nor did you substantiate your erroneous claim of "scientific gloss" when it's clear the keto diet is getting quite positive response from the scientific community, especially concerning weight loss and WLS. All you did was move the goalposts with a projecting statement of: "one diet works better than the other". Recall that this is your argument in trashing a diet without any scientific basis.
  15. I will only post here about two reservations I have about Keto. It's high fat. Healthy fat or not, I'm concerned about heart health down the road, amongst other things. And it's really is just another diet. Once you're off of it, you'll most likely gain your weight back. That's why I'm adopting a sustainable for life diet now. I don't want to "diet" ever again. But if that's what many people and you have considered, y'all have my blessing and I hope it goes well. 😁

That's awesome! My husband decided to jump on board as well. He is doing the keto diet and he has lost almost 10 pounds. I think it is so incredible when your partner supports and helps you. Makes it so much easier. I have been making keto freezer meals for my family to have them ready while I'm recovering. I didn't want to have them bringing home stuff I couldn't eat

    February 2019 weight loss buds

One thing I’ve noticed is that food goes down easier as the day goes on. In the morning I need to drink at least 12 ounces water or else breakfast just won’t go down. Also, I can’t eat nearly as much as I can for lunch or dinner. I’m to the point now where I can barely squeeze in 1/4 cup food for breakfast and about 1/2 cup lunch and dinner. PROGRESS. yay I also make sure to drink 1 to 2 glasses fairlife milk daily to help keep up with protein. still haven’t even tried to eat anything other than protein. Last night my husband and I made a hamburger casserole from a recipe from keto daily. Some of their recipes can tend to be fatty, but we used 93/7 ground beef and half the recommended cheese and it turned out pretty good.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I hear you on this! Like you, I've told very few people about the surgery. I have had a couple of social events that couldn't be missed - a retirement lunch for a work colleague and a funeral for a friend's dad. Both during the pre-op liquid diet. At the lunch, I found wonton soup on the menu and ordered that without wontons. Other than a weird look from the waitress, that one flew. Funerals around here are big food events though and friends make trays of sandwiches and cookies and everything under the sun. It was hard to make excuses for that, but I just said I was on a crazy shake diet and couldn't eat anything. I'm finding there's enough people on the keto kick in my social circles that there's almost always someone on a restriction of some sort. Bless your neighbour (and anyone else who loves to entertain) let me know how you make out with that one!

    Before and After Pics

As of today, I am 4 1/2 months post op and I have lost 76 pounds. I work out 5 days per week, I eat keto, I had gastric sleeve, and I am VERY strict with what goes into my body. My iron, blood sugar, and blood pressure are all normal and I'm no longer on any meds for them. Here's a pre surgery pic and a pic my hubby just now took of me. Notice a difference? LOL

Yes, I did a full liquid before attempting the clear liquid. Clear liquids aren't as satisfying, but you can also use some of your creamy soups and add more water to qualify as a liquid. My go-to proteins were several different types to keep me from being bored: 1) Keto Chow shakes made with 8 oz unsweetened coconut almond milk 2) Premiere protein shakes 3) Unflavored AGN Roots Grass-fed whey (to put in soups or smoothies) 4) Liquid protein to put into water and my SF jello 5) Power Life High Impact Whey Protein (kinda sweet, so I mix it into coffee or a SF carnation drink mix)

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Nothing I would call “bad” I have days where I intentionally stray off program, but I ALWAYS go the extra mile before AND after to make up for it. I now practice IF (intermittent fasting) all of the time. What varies is the length of time I fast daily. Most days I practice 16:8 or 18:6, but when I restrict further (either 20 or 24 hours between meals) it takes me a day or two before I can hold my usual amount of food and I supplement with protein shakes. One thing I consistently practice is what I call bari-Keto, and I’m convinced that’s why (along with the IF) that I have so few problems. It’s like regular Keto, but without many of the fats bc those hurt. I very rarely have >25gm carbs on any given day and any carbs I do have are veggie related so it’s offset by a ton of fiber which helps slow the absorption and thus reduces the chance of getting sick from it. Check over your food logs and I bet you find the days where you’re experiencing “bad” are days when either the carb or fat load is higher than normal. Twice I’ve tried to eat salmon with my signature mayo-dill topping and both times it made me very ill. Once I ditched the mayo and subbed in wasabi mustard, I had no problems at all. Which was fabulous news to me as I use tuna/salmon at least 1-2 times weekly to try to keep on top of healthy fats.
  22. YUM YUM YUM. I've recently admitted that cookies (and ice cream) are my kryptonite. So I love me some low-carb cookie recipes. Now gotta go out and find some tapioca flour and try these out...thanks! Edited to add: just did a quick google on tapioca flour and learned its not so very keto-friendly. Found suggestions to replace with almond flour 1:1 (or xanthan gum). Sooooo...no need to wait to go shopping for the tapioca flour! Going to make these this afternoon

Yes, it will be on the site--if I can ever figure out how to configure it. LOL! I'm working on it. So you can use any size waffle maker. You just center the chaffle in the middle of your machine. You can get them used at GoodWill or Thrift Stores for about $10. You can order this from Amazon for $9.99 https://amzn.to/2GVCDU7 The batter/dough is very thick and sticky. They need to be pressed out and thinned to crisp up. So I don't think they would work as pancakes. But here is a recipe for my silver dollar pancakes that works well. Here's the biscuit mix recipe that you make ahead and store: https://fluffychixcook.com/mile-high-keto-biscuit-mix-low-carb/ Then here's the pancake recipe: https://fluffychixcook.com/mile-high-silver-dollar-pancakes-low-carb-gluten-free-options/ And here's another one: https://fluffychixcook.com/psylli-pumpkin-spice-pancakes-low-carb-induction-inspired-gluten-free/

@GreenTealael I think your vegan at home would appreciate this meal (even with the brand of tofu I used labeled as chicken in Baritastic 😂). If I had eaten it all it would’ve been 412 calories, 20g protein, 20g carbs with 7g of fiber, and a whopping 30g of fat which seems fitting as I got the recipes from a vegan keto cookbook (the recipes are delicious!) I might eat more of it later as I’m probably only sitting at 600 calories total for the day. 😞
