    Blood pressure

Even some keto/high protein-low carb related foods are high in sodium. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water.
  2. I just finished my 5 month pics/measurements. I am only 6 pounds away from Onderland!! Hopefully I can hit that by the end of month 6. I can't really see a difference between these pics and last months, but, my measurements tell me I have lost 5" from my waist.

On a side note... I saw the doc for my GB results yesterday, I have stones and sludge, and a fatty liver. 😒 The best diet for a fatty liver is the keto diet, so this month I will be working towards eliminating sugar, white flour, and fried items from my diet.

YAY!! 6#'s is really close!! Are you thinking of getting your GB taken out? Easy Peacy for me. I was 24 when I had mine removed. Good Luck

      Ldyvenus

I was totally gungho for getting it removed, but someone on BP mentioned that having it removed causes weight gain. I haven't had any episodes since the first one either, that pain is terrible. I have been referred to a surgeon, and I guess in the mean time, I will do a little more research on pros and cons.

    What is Keto

Keto is the latest evolution of the low carb craze - Atkins, Zone, South Beach, etc. which emphasizes even greater carbohydrate restriction and higher fat consumption than previous incarnations. "LCHF" (low carb, high fat) and Paleo diets are kissing cousins. Clinically, such diets are used for minimizing weight loss for non-WLS gastrectomy patients and regaining unwanted lost weight.

How many Carbs a day ?

Total carbs - Fiber+ Sugar = Net Carbs... I am Type 2 Diabetic 5 years...I take my Metformin from a PEZ dispenser...I'm hoping my Sleeve August 10, will get rid of the type 2 altogether... I also plan on doing keto diet when I'm back to real food... er
  5. I am averaging between 15-25g net carbs daily. Net carbs are total carbs minus the fiber. Many people do well on a low carb keto diet. I get most of my daily carbs from vegetables and the rest from dairy.

    Ketogenic diet post sleeve?

Keto is easy but because of the meat can be expensive but since we eat so little it won't be bad for us. I love it. I eat low carb, high protein, high fat. It's such a strange way to eat because it goes against everything I've learned but it works for me! It helps the appetite and fills me up. I am incredibly carb sensitive (thyroid issues and pre diabetic) and this way of eating curbs carb cravings. Look into it. I plan to eat this way long term!

    Chicken wings and worry

Thanks. I won't. I weigh/measure everything. I'm trying one thing at a time and the wings fit into my keto plan but I guess I expected my sleeve to hurt. Trying to find my way and it's just such a new way of life. Thanks again for the advice.
  8. I think it really all boils down to your goals and your personal mindset. For me, I have been overweight or obese (mostly obese) all of my life. I have been on dozens of diets over the years, and had temporary success (even weighing under 200 pounds for about a year when I was 21-22), only to re-gain and be miserable again eventually. Finally, I got to almost 400 pounds. Everything on me was starting to become dangerous (blood sugar, A1C, cholesterol, etc., etc., etc.). I was having trouble navigating at the airport (I travel a lot for my work); I couldn't pee without dribbling on myself because of all of the fat; I had no energy and no sex drive. There's more, but you get the picture. At that moment of harsh reality, I finally decided that food and drink wasn't worth all of that misery -- food is just food, not a way of life. And 15 months later (6 months pre-op diet program plus 9 months post-op), I weigh under 200 pounds, my labs are perfect, my health is secured, I feel like a normal person, and I look great. I am going to continue to embrace a keto way of eating long-term because I refuse to gain weight back. Being this size is more important to me than any food or drink. The early days post-op suck. There is no way around it. And things do get better pretty quickly. But it will never be the same as it was before. And, for me, that is a good thing. But you have to decide for yourself what is the most important to you and then design your life around that. It looks like you have had success with your band. And I'm sure you will have success with the sleeve as well. I wish you the best as you continue your journey.

    Ketogenic diet post sleeve?

My understanding on keto is shaky but I know Paleo. Paleo takes the approach of only eating food that was accessible prior to the onset of agriculture. So no potatoes, no bread, no rice, no corn. Also, no dairy. Only grass fed or free range meat. There isn't any focus on macros. You basically eat until full whenever you feel like eating. A good resource to look into on it is nerdfitness. Keto seems to be pretty much like paleo, but with more focus on macros. So you eat the same things, but you focus on making sure you are getting a certain amount of fat and protein in.
  10. My wife has lost one lb less than me with no surgery. When I did my preop diet she did it with me and has stayed doing keto since my surgery. I try not to be jealous or competitive with her because she's definitely more active and ten years younger. But damn, I had surgery! In all honesty I'm so grateful she's been eating well. It's helped me so much and I'm very happy for her. I know I couldn't have lost this much weight without surgery. Back on topic. I'm weighing myself once a week mostly. Sometimes if I happen to be naked I might hop on. I don't log it though. I had a brutal stall but seem to be creeping down again. I'll play it by ear from here on out.

    Ketogenic diet post sleeve?

I don't know much about the Paleo diet, but I do know that the Paleo lets you have potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and other vegetables that are not allowed on Keto due to too high in carbs. I try to limit my self to 15-25 grams of carbs a day and keep my protein to the 85g my doctor and Nut suggested. I don't add the extra fats like keto suggests, but I know people that do and are losing really well.

I'm new to all of this, I just had surgery 6 days ago. What is the difference between Keto and Paleo? Sent from my SM-G930T using BariatricPal mobile app

    Ketogenic diet post sleeve?

I ate Keto pre-op and plan to resume after I am healed. I will do low carb, high protein, moderate fat. My husband (normal weight athlete) does low carb, high fat. We will be on similar eating plans which will be a lifesaver. We can cook one meal, and he can add extra fat to his plate only. We have found this to be a sustainable way of eating. And it is right in line with my NUT recommendations.
  14. Jess...i googled fundus. My surgery was at yale so i am not questioning that the surgeon was lax. I do sometimes feel more restrictions than others but havent isolated quite shen that occurs except when i substitute a garden of life protein powder. But not so much now that its formulated with pea protein. Im not panicked about this, as yet. I don't like it...but do accept that it's a life long struggle and i will never consider myself "out of the woods." My surgeon remarked on my fourth year follow-up that he never expected i would adhere to his 'rulings' as rigidly as i had. In fact he had his nut encourage me to add berries as complex carbs because i was not getting enough. So...i am looking forward to seeing what the new voodoo doc will recommend and hope i could resume the 7 keto DHEA but won't get ahead of myself. Thanks for your discussion.

    Ketogenic diet post sleeve?

Keto is not a LOW Protein diet. It is high protein, high fat, low carb way of life. I love it! I do however watch my fat and don't do as much as they say too. But I have no cravings for carbs at all. I make all kinds of yummy food (Pinterest Keto) that the whole family loves. Want to see an actual VSG person on Keto, get on youtube and search for "watch kitty shrink" she does nothing but Keto and looks amazing! Good luck!

    Ketogenic diet post sleeve?

I have followed a keto way of eating since the beginning of my six month insurance-required diet (including during the post-op food stages). I like it because it is a sustainable way of eating for me and it meets the protein-heavy requirements of post-op life. I love it -- and have lost over 200 pounds embracing this style of eating! Good luck!
  17. 33 since surgery, the rest was before that. This pic was before I started keto and my pre-op. I've been a little bit stalled, but I'm not sweating it too hard. I'm taking my surfboard out this weekend which is a big time calorie burner for me. So I don't think I'll be stalled for long. ETA: I was never able to fit in those pub chairs before (on the right). Whenever we would go to that court bar, I had to stand the whole time and just act like I didn't feel like sitting to save myself from being embarrassed. It feels really good to not have hips the size of a Chevy tailgate anymore.

    Carbs

Beyond activity levels, such factors include prior dietary history and genetics. There is a genetic predisposition toward diabetes, insulin resistance and genuine "carb sensitivity" that some people have, and they can benefit form low carb diets; for those without that genetic makeup it's just another fad diet. I don't know if I was considered a big exerciser who "should" succeed with a 100g diet, but I couldn't afford the common side effects or nutritional deficiencies of low carb dieting and knew from history and experience that it has little to do with weight loss success. My wife lost 200# without regard to carb counts, and she is exercise averse. Carb counting and such severe restrictions was never an emphasis in our program an no one seems to be suffering from it (sugar, simple carbs and junk food in general, yes, but carbs as a macro, no.) In the absence of WLS, the success rate of losing large amounts of weight and keeping it off is about 5%, whether one does a low fat diet, low carb diet, balanced, Atkins, Keto or whatever one chooses. With WLS, success rates are similar - people have been successfully maintaining massive weight loss for decades before low carb became the fad of the day. In the fourteen some odd years that I have been involved in the bariatric world, I have never seen anyone fail because of "too many carbs". whatever magic number is chosen - 100g, 40g, 20g... Too many calories relative to their metabolism - absolutely; though those excess calories may be from carbohydrates, they can just as easily be from too much fat or protein, or more typically a combination of them all. Excessive fat consumption is often a problem in maintenace as people who adopted the "full fat everything" habit early on when their volume was severely restricted often continue it as their volume increases a few years out and they let their calories slip away from them. They may blame the carbs for "getting away from them" and exceeding the magic 40g. but then ignore the 1000 calories of fats they are consuming, with a 12-1300 cal metabolism.
  19. Same, keto has it merits to brake the carb cravings, but diminished returns after that.

    Hesitant on Diet choices

I followed a keto way of eating for six months prior to my surgery (and lost 99 pounds before surgery day), so I wouldn't eat all of those carbs during the early days like my NUT wanted me to. I just didn't want to go through the transition to ketosis all over again (because it is heinous). That being said, it's a personal choice. If you haven't been doing keto or low carb, it probably won't hurt you in the early days. If you have, you might want to think about it.
  21. 6/8 - KETO KETO KETO. I am trying everything I can with KETO. Nothing out of the ordinary.

6/9 - Breakfast: Had two egg whites, and 1 slice turkey bacon. Lunch: Turkey lettuce wrap (delicious). Dinner: Protein shake. Got my Hidrate bottle and immediately fell in love. I went as far as purchasing another one in Teal. I plan on having all the colors. Yayyy. Having difficulty with this 64 oz water intake I see. All this time, I thought I was drinking way more water than I was. SMH.

6/10 - Meal prepped for the week. Mozzarella stuffed chicken with Mushrooms. It is soo delicious. Low carb and high in protein. The remaining prep for breakfast was turkey bacon (BLT) with lettuce as the bread.

6/11 - Nothing out of the ordinary happened.

6/12 - Could not get out of bed. I felt burnt out and just exhausted. I went to work but could not function enough to hit the gym. I slept so long.

6/13 - Still felt exhausted. No gym and had a massive headache. It could possibly be this NYC heat. My fan is not cutting it anymore.

6/14I actually had enough energy to workout (with the help of C4). I have been slacking in my vitamins for the evening so I am wondering if this could be the reason why I was out of it. It does not help that I am overworked as well. However, that C4 gave me a kick that I needed. I still have a buzz going. I hope I do not crash. I only took 1/2 scoop which is below the recommended. My mom went and brought some organic Turkey Burgers lol. She was sooo excited and happy. She goes, "Look Mocha. It is for you. I know you cannot have the other food at the cookout but I got you some Turkey burgers and I will make some chicken and shish kabobs for just for you :D." She had the biggest smile. It was too cute.

Well this is it for now. I am sorry that I do not post regularly like I used to. I am taking on a new business project and it is taking a lot of my time.

Well here is mines for today. Only 9 oz for far. I am so focused on water because I used to feel so dehydrated that now I am not focusing on eating enough. Ever since getting the hidrate, my calorie intake has dropped to 350-450 when I normally would take in 650-750 a day.

    Triathlete

I'm a triathlete...or was, but will be again. I had back surgery in December 2015 and haven't been able to run since. It's because of my back i ended up with WLS. I hope that I'll one day be able to do it again. I eat low carb or keto when I was training and racing. worked wonders. Gave me plenty of fuel. I'm not super fast, but my half marathon time is 2:14 on keto. I usually eat nuts, cheese during training and race, had an early breakfast with eggs and bacon, avocado, cheese. That was before wls though.

Any sleevers doing a ketogenic diet?

Hi BigUtahMan, The keyto diet is something I was really messing around with a couple of months ago. I agree, it helped me with hunger as well. I bought books, keytone sticks, read articles and watched youtube videos to gain a better understanding. I asked my nut about it and she just said not to worry about whether or not I was in ketosis, just to continue eating protein first and focus on whole foods...all the things she had taught me over the past year plus. I was also reading conflicting information, which is pretty much the case with anything you look up on the internet these days. It was a little strict for me. It was hard for me to process that if I ate one apple (20g of carbs) that I was probably over my carb limit. My nut is a fan of the paleo diet and it seems to be less restrictive, so I'm currently learning more about paleo. I think Keto can be very beneficial, but very stict. At 14 months out I find myself still learning.
  24. 6/5  - Still doing my Keto Diet. It is working. I am very proud of sticking to it.

6/6 - Went to the surgeon for a 2 month followup. I weighed in at 213.4 lbs. He was very happy at my progress and the way I am healing. He said that amount of weight loss is amazing. I went to get my blood work done to make sure that my vitamins and nutritional intake is great.

6/7 - Had a Glazed Donut. It was the best Donut I have ever had. I THREW IT UP within 10 minutes. I needed to do it to myself. I was starting to slowly eat something I was not supposed to so I just gave in and now that I know I cannot have it. I feel better.

I have a few freinds that are doing the KETO DIET. They are doing great. Most of them have had WLS. My hubby tried his hardest to do Keto but the meal plan, was to prep the food form the part of the week. We were set up with recipes for that week. But he really didn't care for the food. I DON'T care for leftovers so I didn't even try it. But I think it is a great program for sure. I have heard and seen lots of peeps doing great on it. Good Luck

    2. Sleeve1stFitNext

      Sleeve1stFitNext

Yeah. With keto you really have to meal prep and since I am lazy and like to just roll and go, I can eat left overs for days. It saves me money when it comes to outside food too. Thank you. I am trying.
