  1. Not sure how much your tummy can hold, but the trick with keto, and other low-carb diets is to actually limit your meat/protein to 3oz, 3 times a day, and fill up the rest of the time on green veggies (add some nuts or cheese to round out your protein goal}. Test it out to see how much green stuff you can eat after eating 3oz of protein. If only a bite or two, then eat your protein and veggies separately. 3 oz of raw spinach and 3 oz cooked spinach look very different in the bowl.. see which one you can eat more of... I mention spinach, specifically, because I'll eat about 4oz cooked, and stuff is like a laxitive for me. (I do add a teaspoon of oive oil and a splash of vinegar and some spices for flavor). Green veggies need a little fat to help you absorb the fat-soluble vitamins.

    Breads Products!

Since someone asked, I eat double fiber wheat bread, which 4 grams per slice. So there CAN be somewhat high-fiber bread. Not exactly sure if/when/how much I'll be eating of that after surgery, though, and certainly during the losing phase I won't make it a staple or priority. My surgeon's dietitian recommends a normal healthy diet with (obviously) a focus on protein. I know a lot of surgeons recommend a keto-like diet and I'm very thankful mine does not. I don't see a reason why healthy foods like beans, fruit, and whole grains have to be cut out completely and put in the mental "bad!" category as if they're the same as a candy bar.

Vets- 3 years post VSG and need help

Hmmmm I'm perplexed then, esp since I assumed you weren't eating lactose because you said it caused you problem, but the butter and cheese are ok? Sounds like you could do keto with some plant based fats? Olive oil, nuts and nut butters. That kind of thing?
  4. If you are interested I know a KETO group that the owner makes all of your menu's and is a true go getter. She is also a WL peeps. She herself had WLS. This could be interesting. If u want me to post her name just let me know and I will post it on your page. Glad you found this group.
  5. Keto may really help you kick the sugar. When I eat keto or close to keto, I do not have cravings. High fat really works well for me. High protein sometimes leaves me feeling more hunger. So, for example, if I don't eat enough fats and eat chicken (high protein but lean) for a couple days, I get hungry or cravings. Fats mainly come from avocado, cream and nuts. Sometimes butter.
  6. Whew! Dodged the bullet on that erroneous heart attack thing.. Doc: "Sir, I have good news! You didn't have a heart attack!" You: "What heart attack?" Excellent plan losing as much as you can before surgery.... and keto will get you there!
  7. i'm 3.5 years out; gained about 25 lbs. have little control. don't have great access to doctors-had to change docs due to insurance change and new doc only wants to see me if i'm going to discuss revision. don't feel I need revision. yes I have reflux again, but I've gained a lot of weight back which was always the cause of my reflux in the first place. NUT recommends a 'balanced diet' which I don't agree with. I can't eat hoards of fruit, sugar, and carbs and be successful. just looking to connect with some true vets and try to tackle this together. hubs needs some help too. we're both drinking pop, although i'm drinking mostly diet. trying very hard to get off the pop. we're just not sure if we should be doing a 'bariatric' type diet with protein base, shakes, broths, etc like post op and progress from there, or if something like Keto is the correct route. honestly I've had issues with milk post op-lactose intolerance- so doing shakes makes me a little nervous, also experiencing serious dumping syndrome with heavy fat meals, so that makes me nervous about Keto. thinking that a baseline bariatric plan is they way to go, and maybe try Fairlife milk, or coconut milk??? I appreciate ALL help, advice, etc. I feel very lost, 3.5 years ago I was the MOST driven, focused patient that my former surgeon had. he was convinced I would be totally successful, and I feel like a total failure.
  8. Hi everyone, New to this group! Glad I have found it. I had WLS back in 2004. I have regained alot of weight. I do suffer from Hashimoto which is such a journey in itself! I tried Keto not long ago and loved how I was feeling. However, because of the weight loss surgery I cannot eat alot of meat. I loved the good fats and how they make me feel and the low carb really help with getting down the inflammation that I suffer from..... I was working with a gal and her team that had great success on Keto diet and was hopeful, however they cannot relate to the WLS. While I was loosing, after a bit of time I became VERY constipated, to the point of worry. I was taking stool softener & laxatives and wasn't able to go!!! So with that said I need another plan. I think the combo of WLS and hashimoto means I need a bit more carbs .....and not so much meat. So I am thinking of pulling out the protein shakes again. I remember when I really enjoyed them for awhile. However, I know I cannot live on them... Anyhow...thoughts, stories to share? Thanks! (I also have a thread on this group about how I now see I am malnurished....getting tested next week....I can tell my vit levels are low!)

    Advice...

Disclaimer -- I am a huge advocate of the keto way of eating. I've lost over 200 pounds and it has worked well for me. My recommendation is to lower your carbs and see if that will help you. The protein gives you more bang for your buck calorie-wise, and will keep you full longer. A lot of nutritionists are very pro-carb. Low carb and high protein and fat have been the keys to success for me. Good luck!

    6 month stall / plateau

So I was sleeved on January 6th, I'm approaching my 6 month surgeriversary in three days. My starting weight the day of surgery was 303 pounds, so i've lost about 94 pounds. Since about 6/25 I've been stalled, fluctuating between 208 & 210. I've heard of a dreaded 6 month stall and I'm not quite sure what I can do to kick my weight loss back into high gear. On any given day I can eat between 500-1000 calories. It honestly depends on how much restriction I have on the particular day. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am also fairly active and workout for 45 minutes to 1.5 hours a few times per week if my schedule permits. I also stick to eating a keto-based diet and try tostay away from carbs as much as possible and I try to get at minimum 60grams of protein in per day.
  11. It is your choice and your body, you do not need to explain anything to anyone. But! Just always say on facebook "hitting the gym," or pictures of healthy food. Sign up for a 10k or sprint triathlon (even if you do not end up doing it) just tell people "Ya I am training for this sporting event and the weight is just falling off!" Just say I am on the KETO diet and only drink green tea. I told my co-workers which is true, that I am having surgery to fix my debilitating acid reflux that was causing my esophagus to develop pre-cancerous cells, and fix a hernia, so I just say everything without saying "gastric bypass," and I just mention that they are taking part of my stomach to help with the reflux.
  12. I had the sleeve surgery on September 28, 2016. My insurance required me to do a six month pre-op diet program. I began that in March 2016. I lost 99 pounds (from 397 to 298) during the six months leading up to surgery day following a keto way of eating. I have continued that keto diet post-op (even during the food stages), and I have lost an additional 105 pounds, for a 204 pound loss total. I weigh 193 right now, and I am 13 pounds from my goal of 180 at approximately 9 months post-op. I'll echo what some of the others have said -- the surgery (regardless of which one you choose) is only a tool and will only do so much for you. You have to have the grit, drive, and perseverance inside of you to win the mental game which is the really tough part post-op. There are ways to eat around any of the surgeries, and you have to get your mind in the right place to do what you need to do at all times. That is what brings success long-term. These forums are full of people who were mentally unprepared, never changed their relationship with food, and either never reached their goal or gained most of their weight back. Also, the journey is slow and arduous, full of stalls and plateaus, and requires patience and keeping the big picture in mind at all times. Good luck as you make your decision! Any of the surgeries can be life changing if you put in the hard work necessary.

    Calorie Intake Concerns

Thanks! I intend to stay on keto but want to make sure I'm not screwing up my thyroid hormones. So I'm really interested in this. Appreciate it!
  14. @Joann454 I started researching this today after your post and I found this article with links to other literature http://www.ketotic.org/2014/12/the-effect-of-ketogenic-diets-on.html?m=1 It may be that lower T3 while on. Keto diet is a good thing. I am still researching, but I wanted to share this with you.

    Calorie Intake Concerns

I try and "refeed" carbs once a week. I did some research on Hashimoto disease and apparently when we are doing keto it throws our T3 into starvation mode. I wish I had the study to show you. The info is all over the place though. I tried it (adding higher carbs for one day) and dropped two lbs in two days. If I stall out again I'll try it again and see how it goes.
  16. I am now 1 month and 2 days out from surgery. Down about 25 lbs. Now that i am on solid food, I find myself eating smaller portions as chicken and beef fill me up so quickly. I was bad and tested out tortilla and bread. My body did not like it. Did not like it AT ALL. But that's ok. I don't need them anyway. Considering trying out the Trim Healthy Mama or Keto diet. I see my nutritionist on the 7th so I will broach with her. Not sure which one fits me better though. I want something I can maintain for life.

Hiatal hernia 4 years post op -help

I'm not sure if you're still looking for info as I see you posted about this in March. I can relate to your situation. I had the sleeve almost two years ago. I have PCOS, which didn't present symptoms until after a pregnancy. I was very fit prior to the pregnancy. After pregnancy, I just couldn't lose the weight regardless of my clean meal plan and 5 day per week exercise routine. I actually just started gaining without changing anything! Doctors did blood work and other tests, said it was PCOS and my best hope for losing was wls. I had a consult, was recommended to go with the sleeve. July 15, 2015 I was sleeved. I quickly lost down to 195 but it stalled by month 4!! I was working out, eating correctly, nada! It was very depressing. In June of 2016 I started slowly gaining, again without having changed anything. By January 2017, I was up to 216. I went back to my surgeon who sent me for tests and to the medical weight loss doctor. Tests revealed that I had become Insulin Resistant AND I had developed a Hiatal Hernia. I followed a Keto diet from January-April. I lost 16 pounds the first two weeks putting me back to 200 BUT my weight would not budge. I also had severe reflux during this entire time. So, my surgeon suggested that we fix the hernia and revise to a bypass because that is the only way to resolve the gerd. He also stated that with the malabsorption and my endocrine issues, he hopes I will lose another 40-50 pounds. He had to do a peer to peer with my insurance but got it approved!! I had my revision surgery June 14th and am doing very well...it was easier and less painful than the sleeve!! I'm almost 2 weeks out and down 12 pounds. The weight loss may be slower this time but the scale is moving! I'm praying it continues to move because I can't imagine going through this entire process and not getting to a healthy weight. I wish I had gone with the bypass originally but there's no way we could have known I would be one of the few that the sleeve wouldn't be successful for.
  18. 6/26 - I had a bad day. My bf and I broke up. He stated that he preferred me bigger and that had he known things would change that he would have never supported the decision. When I asked how things changed, he stated the following:

    1) You put on makeup more

    2) You get your nails done more

    3) You do your hair more

    4) You dress differently. You do not cover up as much

    5) Guys look at you more (Ding! Ding! Ding!)

    6) They hit on you more (Jackpot!!)

I was stunned as he continued on his rant. At that point he told me he needed space and that he felt he needed time to get used to the new situation.

Before this journey I would ate my feelings away. I would have cried, watch romantic movies, Jack and Rose would have been my idols, my heart would have not gone on and I would have gained 5 lbs in one day. However, I felt no desire to stuff my face. Actually I felt nothing. After thinking about what he said and talking to my mom, I decided to end the relationship. I do not want that toxic attitude in my positive environment. I made a hard choice, however I am sure I made the right choice.

6/27 - Still followed my Keto diet. I did have a sugar free Popsicle. Went to the gym. Noticed something disturbing, my boobies are starting to have loose skin :48_weary:. I knew it would happened but I was hoping it would not. I boobs do not fit in my bra's anymore. They are sliding under the wire like peek-a-boo. SMH.

It's okay. Thanks for all the support. I just did not think that he would be that way. He is fit, muscular and works out religiously. I thought he would be proud of me. I do not look like the females he typically date. Part of me thinks that's why he is insecure. His exes either treated him badly or cheated. Maybe his fear was that I would do the same once I lost all the weight. Whatever the reason, it's unacceptable. Really thought he was it.

    Preop weight loss

That's what I've noticed with a lot of the bariatric patients that I follow on social media. Keto/ low carb and some version of plant based diets seem to be popular. I've recently stopped eating most meats ( except fish) and my body seems to prefer this. Congrats on your weight loss and new life!

    Preop weight loss

My surgeon didn't give me a requirement, but since my insurance required a six month pre-op diet program, I decided to lose as much as possible before surgery day. I lost 99 pounds during those six months (from 397 to 298), changed my relationship with food, and set myself up for success post op (I've lost an additional 105 pounds since the surgery day). I followed a keto way of eating during those six months, and I have done the same thing post-op (including during the post-op food stages). I don't eat more than 20 carbs per day.

    Preop weight loss

My surgeon wanted me to lose 10 lbs before surgery. My insurance needs me to not have gained any weight since my first consult, but i gained 5 lbs in that first two weeks. So now i have a total of 15 lbs to lose. I've basically been eating as clean as possible and as close to a post surgery diet as my body will allow me. I have a green smoothie in morning, salad for lunch and a fish based dinner. I'll switch things out as i feel like but for the most part this is my diet. I have one more month left before my last weigh in, prior to insurance approval; my goal is to go very low carb about two weeks before. I have had temporary success with Keto so I'd recommend trying that.= or at least a low carb diet. Its pretty helpful to get those quick lbs off pre - op. My issue was maintaining the lifestyle but i think once I have the sleeve, the new diet and lifestyle should be low carb friendly. Plus low carb is good for those with diabetes or pre diabetes. Good Luck!
  22. Sorry I am sooo late. I will make it short and quick.

6/15 - Keto nothing out of the ordinary.

6/16 - Gym and healthy eating.

6/17 - I had a small I mean baby spoon of Red Velvet cake for my b-day and I was out for the count. I had to use the bathroom a lot. My mom said, "uh hmmm. was it worth it?". I whispered, " Yes" lol. Just an overall bad day. I broke the diet and ate carbs and sugar. Shame Shame !!!! Lol I am only Human.

6/18 - The cake was still messing with me so I barely ate or even drank water. I was exhausted all day. Weighed in at 209.8 lbs.

1-Month Post Op Overall Loss: 14.6

2-Month Post Op Overall Loss: 8.8 lbs

3-Month Post Op overall loss: 10.8 lbs

6/19 - Barely ate or drank water again. I just slept most of the day away. Spent a lot of time in the bathroom.

6/20 - Still followed the Keto Diet.

6/21 - Still followed the Keto Diet. Still time, adding breakfast foods to the option instead of a shake or protein shot.

6/22 - Breakfast: Baked Turkey Bacon (3 Slices), 1 Egg white. 1 Romaine Lettuce leaf.

    Snack: 14 Olives

Lunch: 2 oz of ground chicken, mild salsa, 1 tsp of sour cream, and 1 romaine lettuce leaf.

    Snack: Sugar Free Popsicle.

Dinner: 2 oz of ground chicken, mild salsa, 1 tsp of sour cream, and 1 romaine lettuce leaf.

    Snack: 1 pickle

    6/23 - Breakfast: 3 Egg Whites

Lunch: Homemade Chicken Salad - no dressing.

Dinner: Pickles and Sugar Free Popsicle.

6/24 - Went to a friends baby shower. They actually had healthier food options. Met a few of her extended family whom had Bariatric Surgery. One woman (weighing 392 lbs) had the bypass 17 years ago. She said back then there was not a pysch eval, waiting period or even a pre-authorization. She said she went to the doctor Monday and that Thursday she had the surgery. She showed me all the scars from access skin removal. She told me that nothing prepares you for the disappointment you will feel when you work hard and you do not look the way you thought. She had to have a full body lift and breast augmentation. It was soo enlightened to speak with someone whom was from that time and had the experience. She told me that sugar kills her but rice and bread is her fave. She stated that she got down to 125 lbs and felt soo unattractive. She stated that she gained her weight back up to 185 lbs and have maintained that weight for over 10 years.

6/25 - Had my Keto Meal.

Breakfast: Baked Turkey Bacon (3 Slices), 1 Boiled Egg white.

    Snack: 14 Olives

Lunch: 2 oz of chicken, 1 tsp of sour cream, and 2 romaine lettuce leaf.

    Snack: Sugar Free Popsicle.

Dinner: 2 oz of Chicken and Romaine Lettuce with 1/2 tomato.

    Snack: 1 pickle

My best friend is trying to get me to try Isagenix (https://www.isagenix.com/en-us/products/weight-loss). She has lost 55 lbs since February on it. It is like $378 a month. I am like the hell!! Bro whom has that money. She is really excited and she wants to me to try it so bad. I am tempted. Keto has been awesome but I am bored now and want to try something else. I think I am a Fad Diet Groupie.

Oh and the Hydrate. On the days when I focus on water. I am barely eating. I love those days. Food does not be on my mind. Below I have screen shot my progress. So yayy. Keto has really helped me get back on track.

@Newme17 Thank you!!! Yes I put ice in mines. In addition, I place it in the freezer for 5 - 10 minutes. I know it is against the rules but it makes my water colder too. I cannot help it. I ended up telling her no for now. I just like trying new things all the time. I am one of those people that tries something just for the experience.

@Mowryrocks I know that Isagenix has been around for awhile. I consider anything that I try in which someone recommended it to me a "fad". That includes clothing, cars and my job lol.

    What is Keto

I just google to find recipes. Here are some of the sites I like. http://www.ibreatheimhungry.com/ https://www.ruled.me/keto-recipes/ https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/recipes/best-keto-recipes I also found that many of my normal recipes worked with minor substitutions. e.g Use zucchini noodles instead of pasta, choose higher fat beef, add cheese / butter.

How many Carbs a day ?

I'm 3 months post op !! My weight has stalled I think I'm eating too many carbs I'm really would like to try keto but don't know where to start

    What is Keto

The Keto Diet is also know as Low Carb High Fat (LCHF). It calls for high fat, moderate protein and low carb. Google will give you lots of information. Just like any diet it has its promoters and opponents. We follow LCHF in our house b/c my husband does triathlons and he finds that way of eating benefits his athletic performance. Pre-op, I felt better on it because i wasn't eating as much processed crap - kept by carbs under 60 grams. Many on Keto recommend keeping your carbs at 30 - 50 grams. I found that very difficult to maintain. I personally did not see much weigh loss, despite feeling better. Now that I am post -op, I will resume when this type of plan when I am cleared for solids. While my husband does high fat, moderate protein and low carb, I will do high protein, moderate fat. This will allow us to cook one meal - he can add the extra fat to his serving. The plan is consistent with my NUT recommendations.
