Intermittent Fasting Daily Menu/Results/Accountability
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I would potentially "think" so? But have no proof of that. Some say being in keto makes things go faster also, but again--no proof. I do know my ketometer (breath) shows when I'm getting benefits cuz it finally starts going up--while blood glucose is going down. When I'm eating poorly, or eating big meals, then it goes pretty low (.10-.15). Mine never gets over 1 though. And that's fine by me! -
June Sleevers Lets Get Excited!!!

Yes, Next week already, it feels like time passed in a flash, I booked the surgery two months ago. The smallest I can ever remember being was 135 in high school too! I was in dance and it kept me in shape, m weight has slowly crept up through the years and after having my kids i packed on 20lbs each kid that just wouldn't come off. I used to be super active and then i tore all the ligaments in my foot and here came more weight. Now i also struggle just to stay under 200, i've tried everything including keto and it just comes right back on, with a vengeance every time. I told my family that I don't want to hear there opinions when they think i look weird if i do hit my goal weight. I know its going to be different for me because i haven't seen myself that small ever, even when i was at that weight i thought i was fat... if i knew then what i know now lol. I'm so ready thought to not feel all this weight on my knees and my back. That has been the hardest, not being as active because my foot swells under the weight and stress. Hope we can follow each others progress and be each others motivation! -

I have a few questions so I might understand your predicament better.... So you had surgery on 6/12.... When did your Dr. have you go on the water only diet? From what date to to what date did you lose the 45lbs? Soooo I'm not a Dr. however I have had several stalls and my Dr. said they would be normal. He told me that my body would need time to adjust in between drops of weight. So ive lost 28 pounds since my surgery on 6/15. 17 of that weight came off the first month, After that i've averaged about 5lbs a month. Now i say averaged but in reality I have stalled for 2-3 weeks then had movement in the scale of a few lbs for 1-2 weeks. Then I will stall again for 2-3 weeks then the scale moves again. I definitely have noticed when i eat more protein rich foods and drink lots of water i get movement in my scale..... The problem is the reason I had the surgery to begin with I LOOOOOVEEE carbs!!! So while i try to have more good days with my eating I don't always stick to the protein first rule! My recommendation would be to not cut out eating.... I think that might make you stall more since when you reintroduce food your body is probably going to try and keep as much nutrients as it can. I have heard a lot of people have success with the intermittent fasting but i think you have to start with smaller hours so your body doesn't go into starvation mode and try and keep everything put in it. I know MrsLingo on here was staying low carb or keto and she had looks amazing. A lot of people in my Dr.'s group have also gone low carb and have had success with keeping the stalls short. I know stalls can be frustrating trust me i feel like I've been in stalls more then I've had movement on the scale. If you get a chance check out Ask Dr. A on Youtube. Dr. Alvarez was my doctor and watching his videos has helped me so much. He answers questions other VSGers send in and you would be surprised how many of us have the exact same issues. His videos give you so much information and they help put me at ease about some of the issues or stalls I hit. -
I have followed a keto way of eating since the beginning of my six month insurance-required diet (including during the post-op food stages). I like it because it is a sustainable way of eating for me and it meets the protein-heavy requirements of post-op life. I love it -- and have lost over 200 pounds embracing this style of eating! Good luck!

Modified Duodenal Switch
ChunkCat replied to Lara in Arkansas's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I posted this elsewhere on the forum but I thought I'd put it here in case you didn't see it. This is what one of my typical days looks like at 4 months post-op. My personal macro goal is 120-150 grams of Protein a day, under 50 total carbs, and 100 grams of fat. Also, I can't tolerate any raw fruit at the moment. And calories are not relevant for DS patients because we malabsorb most fat and a good chunk of our protein... 8 am: Premier Protein Cafe Latte shake 9 am: Ratio Keto vanilla Yogurt with 2 tablespoons of toasted coconut chips, 1 tablespoon of keto nut granola, and 1 tablespoon freeze dried strawberries 12 noon: 1/4 cup roasted Spaghetti Squash, 1/4 cup of ricotta cheese, 1/4 cup of a beef bolognese sauce 2 pm: Cafe Macchiato with espresso and 4 oz Fairlife Protein Milk 3 pm: 2 mozzarella cheese sticks, 2 mini baby cucumbers and 4 cherry tomatoes 6 pm: Roasted chicken leg and thigh quarter, 1/3 cup of vegetable Soup 9 pm: Homemade Keto banana Walnut Dark chocolate Muffin Total Macros: 150 grams of protein (yay!!), 43 grams total carbs, 97 grams of fat, 1634 calories. -
I don't know much about the Paleo diet, but I do know that the Paleo lets you have potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and other vegetables that are not allowed on Keto due to too high in carbs. I try to limit my self to 15-25 grams of carbs a day and keep my protein to the 85g my doctor and Nut suggested. I don't add the extra fats like keto suggests, but I know people that do and are losing really well.

CALLING ALL JULY 2016 SLEEVERS
Laughkc11 replied to Tresa Embil's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Uh.... why the EF am I having 2nd thoughts right now?! Haven't questioned this once until tonight. I discovered keto diet recently (I know... another diet) and I guess because it's something I haven't tried I'm somewhat entertaining the idea of giving it one last shot on my own. Before this liquid diet I really felt controlled by food. It's just interesting how much strength and mental focus comes from eliminating the comforts of food. Perhaps that's why I'm second guessing it. I feel very clear-headed and my desire to succeed in health is amplified. I honestly don't even know what I'm getting at here. I guess this is more of a ramble, and I really don't think I'll back out. It's just an interesting thought process I'm having at the moment. -
I was doing Carnivore/Keto diet October through December last year. Lost some good weight. Used MCT Oil or Butter in my coffee to make it bulletproof or keto coffee. It was just a way to get more fat in my diet, which is useful in keto. The MCT oil sometimes gave me diarrhea.

hey , you already said it yourself.. this is the honeymoon phase and the reese's peanut butter cups can wait till you reach your goal... Keto is fine , nothing against it but I say work your sleeve plan protein and water and( vegetable carbs )only. No rice, no pasta,no bread for now . I was told until at least six months.. you got this .. We did not go through ALL this to cheat ourselves out of the maximum loss possible this six months.... I have been losing inches , not so much pounds . gone from size 22 to size 16 but was 232 day of surgery and 218 now so it's not always the pounds we should be proud of... are you using a tracker? Bariastic tracker is so easy I like it better than fitnesspal . Consider your official kick in the ASS..... now do better...…………...

Thank you for sharing. I'm wondering where everyone else is at now that our diet is "regular?" I have been doing my best to follow a certain diet, but gave up on the keto diet about 2 weeks ago. Since adding carbs back into my diet I have absolutely no problem getting at least 1000 calories per day, sometimes I may eat more. Of course my weight loss has slowed to a snails pace. Last week was only 0.8 pounds and this week seems like it will be less. I need to get myself back into gear. I need to log my foods and stop "cheating" with Recese's peanut butter cups. I'm just being honest, and I'm wondering if anyone else has fallen off the band wagon as horribly as I have? If not, someone please give me some kick in the ass words of encouragement, and I am going to switch gears before the time passes and I am out of this initial 6 month honeymoon phase. Sincerely, Week #6 post op And 35 lbs lost since surgery (Not enough weight lost for me to give up after everything I've been through)

Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

Thanks, GT! Yes, I'm almost there. Having to tighten my diet to keep the gallbladder happy has moved the scale a couple of pounds. Getting so close to goal! So long as I stay super low-fat (clearly no Keto for me) I don't have any pain, so that's what I'm doing. -
July 2019 Surgery Siblings Post-Op
KarenLR75 replied to Mom_of_Chaos's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One thing I've found that helps bring up protein without adding so many calories is I add protein powder (unflavored) to almost everything including my shredded chicken I made yesterday which has a salsa/broth poured on top of it. I noticed when I did not add the protein powder, I ate a bigger 'helping' of chicken..probably closer to 4+ oz & generally my pouch only tolerates UNDER 4 oz's well....I have no idea why with this food item I can 'stuff more in'. The reason I say it like that is because I was following old/bad habits, eating quickly, not chewing as much..not putting down my fork. This is where I find I need to do WAY more head work. I can tell when I've HIT my restriction, I need to REMEMBER to measure/weigh as when I do NOT hit my restriction, my old 'stinking' way of 'thinking' starts to wonder..."hhmm..can I take another bites?". The question should be DOES my body REQUIRE another bite? So, I realized I had forgotten the protein powder, I went back to adding it tonight & eating MINDFULLY - something I can forget from meal to meal even ONLY 6.5 weeks out! SCARY! I know this is the honeymoon period but short of trying to ensure I get 60+ oz's of protein, I should be doing whatever I can to keep calories LIMITED (this is my own feelings) AND ontinue to try to keep carbs limited. I;m a super SLOW loser & I noticed when early into pureed stages, when I had the ONE and only helping of 'mashed potatoes'...that I was in TROUBLE. Carbs like this are a big trigger food for me and CONVENIENTLY..my 'Ms. Picky Pouch' did not signify it was full when I expected the restriction to 'kick in as normal'. It's like 'she' (my pouch) decided she could fold and flatten the dang potatoes! I decided after that to love myself enough to kick this trigger food to the curb. You will not find a trigger food in my house normally as I had been doing keto WOL for long, long time. I like your idea of smaller plates. I notice when putting my shredded chicken into my regular size 'Dixie bowl', I was constantly hesitating as it 'looked like less'. I must weigh/measure so I KNOW how much it is. I think I will buy the small..well, ppl would call them dessert plates..whatever the smallest size is, and put my food on that instead. Heck, I have saucers I NEVER use..I can use them..lol..what a CONCEPT! -
I think most of us had differing experiences. For me, I just started feeling satiated longer. Looking back I probably had too much saline in my band most of the time. Getting stuck and regurgitating food seemed like the norm and now I know it shouldn't be. I've had most of my saline removed but got a fill a couple months ago. I think some of the lessons of eating slower with smaller bites has paid off for me. I'm on a Keto diet now and the combination of Keto and a band partially filled seems to be working for me. Just stay away from processed foods, starches and sugars.

I am around. Had a rough week, not fasting. I think trying to add keto killed me, it just gears me up to binge. Going back to my low carb, moderate fat ways. Good luck on your weekend feasting! I still haven't gotten to the point where I can easily bounce back to my IF and EF after a very indulgent weekend. BUT I know you are not one for over indulgence, so I suspect you'll do fine. As for the video--- veganism = bad ---> personal theory confirmed. -

Have you tried the Parmesan crisps? you can buy them at Costco or make them and they are zero carbs! I eat keto so the fat doesn't prevent me from eating them.. and they are crunchy, like a replacement for chips.. also you can have pork rinds.. high protein and no carbs.. hang in there! You're doing great!! -

FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Yes on Veganism = Bad (Most Likely); the caveat is, that there is a qualifier. That qualifier is "Unless it's carefully constructed and observed." LOL! I'm sorry you are struggling getting into keto. You know, maybe look up The Resetters, Dr. Mindy Pelz on YouTube and FB. She talks alot about resetting the female metabolism (especially if you are pre-menopause), and she has a plan that is ketobiotic, but it addresses the week leading up to Auntie Flo and how you progesterone load for that week using things like sweet potatoes, and other things that build progesterone. You actually eat more carbs during that week. And it's helping turn a lot of women's lives and weight loss around. So the keep for me with weekends like the one coming up is planning. I'm a planner, now. And I find comfort in the planning. Like I know our friends want to stop for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. I just don't hardly do that anymore unless those meals are all very slim type of meals. But I know these are gonna be extravagant places and only one really counts tomorrow. So I'm gonna maybe just have a poached egg and sauteed spinach for breakfast with tons of coffee. Then I might eat a bite of Mr. F.s grits or a bite of his biscuit and gravy. Something I know I can easily do. Then lunch is bbq and I will eat my fill of that cuz they don't add sugar. And it won't take much. Dinner is a hamburger from this joint in Arkansas and I've got no probs doing a lettuce wrap. No need for fries cuz I know what they taste like and they make me feel awful. And tons of iced tea! So I know the day won't be bad. Then I just apply those same metrics to Saturday and Sunday. The reality is I will still come back a couple pounds up. But I shouldn't have too much issue going into my M-W fast next week. *score* And it's IF for the win!!!! Also you are doing WONDERFULLY!!!!! It's ok to take a week off. Just keep flexing and building your fasting muscle hon!!! -
My wife and her friend follow the KETO diet the only thing I find really strange is the "bulletproof coffee which contains MCT oil (a form of coconut oil) and some folks put butter in it as well. Bulletproof coffee is supposed to trigger weight loss by way of Ketosis because of lack of carbs into burning fat, help with cravings.

Gatorade before surgery?
Ostflicka replied to Xolosing's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you google - there have been a number of studies that show if people drink a Gatorade or like fluid with the balance of electrolytes that you recover better and faster and don't become less dehydrated. Being dehydrated makes your recovery harder and it's hard for them to put in IVs too. I couldn't personally drink it because I had been Keto 18 months prior to surgery and the sugar would have made me feel awful. I asked if they wanted to me to do a Zero one but my surgeon said it was fine not too. I did have sips of water until an hour before surgery though. But follow your surgeons guidelines and if you can't tell them. -
Congrats! That is wonderful, I don't think I'm going to get to 100 pounds. I'm 9 months out, down 46 pounds and still working on 1-2 pounds at a time. If I could do the protein shakes for 3 weeks I could probably dump a huge amount of weight at one time. But thats keto and hard to stick to! Some people can do it, I get to low energy. I'm trying one day a week do just protein drinks all day! I'm encouraged by all of you!

High protein and low carb AND low fat is extraordinarily unsustainable (ever heard of rabbit starvation?). It's what the preop diet had to be to get that liver down. Postop, as long as we meet our protein goals and calorie goals, the rest is up to us and our plan. Keto, balanced low carb, vegan-ish.. all of them can work, so we have some freedom to pick and choose. -

My homemade cheesecakes are also QUITE low in sugar as we like them to be nice and tart and just put fresh fruit on top. I think if you're trying to eat lower carbs then there are MANY worse "cheats" than a cheesecake, the higher fat and protein to carb content (assuming it's lower sugar of course) make it a much better option than, say, a piece of chocolate cake. If you guys do want to indulge with a cheesecake dessert, it is one of the EASIEST things to make keto. I don't do sugar alcohols though, so mine will also just be .. not AS bad, haha. -
