Keto vs paleo??? Have you ever tried it?

For me, paleo is far more sustainable. Keto is great if you're really trying to push hard to lose weight rapidly for a special event, or you're incredibly disciplined. I cannot maintain that strict level of eating for more than a month. Whenever I've done keto, I've lost the weight, but obsessed about food far more, and gained more of the weight back once I was no longer revolving my life around the diet. I've primarily stuck to a paleo-like diet. My weight loss was slower, but steady. I surpassed my weight goal by one year out, and have maintained the loss quite easily. I'm nearly two years out now. I no longer track my food because I'd gotten into an eating habit, and just naturally eat the way I did when I was losing weight, but I have around 60-90 carbs a day. On keto you're supposed to have less than 20. That's just too restrictive for me. Speaking of paleo, I just discovered Paleo Pops, which are surprisingly yummy, at Bristol Farms. They're great when it's incredibly hot out and I want a cold treat.
  2. Have you guys ever tried either and did it work for you post op? What are your thoughts? So for those of you who are unfamiliar with each, here's how it works: Keto-great for dropping **** loads of weight. Diet tends to be more fun because it allows you to eat yummy foods like bacon. You still have to watch your macros. But basically your diet consists mostly of protein and fat (yes i said fat) and no sugar or carbs. So it forces your body to use fat as energy, thus causing you to burn calories and fat like crazy. Paleo- more of a lifestyle change so you will be healthier overall and still lose weight but not as dramatic for weight loss. Diet is also low carb and high protein. No processed foods like grains etc are allowed. You are allowed to eat starchy veggies like sweet potatoes, yams etc on this diet. I know people who have tried both and loved it, keto seems to be a winner amongst everyone i've talked to. But since our nutrition needs are different as wls surgery patients, i was wondering if anyone tried it and if it still had the same effect on us.

    Going into week 5

Hello everyone! I havent had my sleeve yet. Im scheduled for Aug. 16th. However, My Sister & 1 of my daughters have! They have told me their storys of their pros & cons of their post op diets. So I've started to do more research & I found that Ketogenics might be a good eating program FOR ME, to try now & after my surgery. Check out Dr Eric Berg on youtube under keto diet. He is very informative & explains things that are easy to understand! For Example: he mentions how Apple Cider Vinegar helps to put your body back to it's natural Ph balance which helps with weight loss, constipation, etc. Most of you may already know about the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar. I did too but the way he explains it was way more informative!! Amazing info![emoji106] So check him out. You just might loose your frustrations! Sent from my SM-T530NU using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. I've read over and over that we have to learn how to cook to prevent burnout. So today I cooked a keto chicken dish. It was good but yeah, I have no enthusiasm for the cooking. It doesn't help that I used to like to bake fattening things. Cooking, meh. Also, it's so hot I hate to heat the kitchen up. I'm also two months out and I'm just now starting to exercise. I had zero energy and am just feeling more normal now. Hang in there. You'll find foods you enjoy again.

Is this all i will lose?

Assuming you stick to your plan, you Will lose more! The human body isn't magic. It doesn't run on rainbows and fairy dust, it runs on stored energy (fat and muscle) and what you put into it. So, if you're restricting calories and eating the right kinds of foods, you will lose weight! If you're in a stall and need some assurance that you are losing fat, I like keto strips. They're cheap, all you do is pee on a strip and it tells you what level of ketones are in your urine. Ketones are one sign that your body is in ketosis and is rapidly burning fat. Also, 36 pounds is great! I'm 2.5 months out and only got to 36 pounds today. Follow your meal plan, exercise (whether it be when things are cool in the morning/evening or at a gym), and keep your head up!

Lots of my sleeved friends do the keto/low carb pizza recipes on Pinterest. They are great if you are craving, but don't want the carb overload.

  8. This is a post I can get on board with. (And, for the record, I agree with just about everything you usually post, but the tone of your post from earlier even bothered me a little bit.) Yes, I am only almost 10 months post-op, but I did embrace a keto way of eating for my entire six month pre-op diet program, so I have been eating this way for 16 months now. And my habits are in fact habits and the way I plan to continue eating long-term. Is my approach "extreme"? Not to me, but I can see how others think so. I have watched my dad (2005), mom (2013), and brother (2014) have the bypass, sleeve, and band respectively. My dad and brother have gained back every pound they lost. My mom has gained about 30 pounds. And even they will admit it is because they immediately went back to eating just like they did before. I have watched them do it (even as I have been on my own journey). Can I predict the future? No, I can't. But, I can tell you this -- I am not going back there. If that means 20 carbs a day for the rest of my life, it will just have to mean that. I have made peace with this way of eating, embraced food as fuel, and learned to manage stress in other ways. One guy called me too serious on a thread earlier this week. Some may call me idealistic or extreme. And, in some eyes, maybe that is true, but I'll be damned if I go back to where I began ever again.
  9. what is camp gladiator? Sounds tough! I am interested to know if you all did good on Keto and how many carbs a day? I am NOT feeling well these days at all
  10. I too have Hashimoto which makes it difficult to loose weight. I had the sleeve a little over 3 years ago and I've gained about 15 pounds back. It started when my medication and levels got out of whack! I've been struggling every since. I'm thinking of looking into the Keto diet. Don't know much about it. Thanks for sharing.
  11. Thanks, Apple, for answering. I missed the inquiry. I believe keto should be good for hashimoto sufferers. I've read about a possible link to gluten sensitivity, so keto + gluten free make a nice combo to try...
  12. I have Hashimotos and I am eating LCHF or Keto. I am limiting my carbs to 30-35g daily and I feel like I am doing well. I don't crave carbs anymore at all. I eat about 1-2oz of veggies at lunch and dinner and it seems to be enough. I also take a probiotic and that has helped tremendously with keeping me regular.
  13. 7/8 - Extremely healthy keto day.

7/9 - Halo Top 1/2 Cup Chocolate Mocha Chip (I am in heaven!!). Healthy keto day. Weighed in at 208.4 lbs. Gained 1.4 lbs

7/10 - Hung out at Coney Island with my Mom, little Brother and my dog Buddy aka Rasta Scoobs. At Nathans Philly Chicken with no bun. The guy gave me the nasty look when I ordered it. (It was like really, you are going to come here and want to eat healthy at Nathans?). With a nasty tone, he says, "It's going to be the same price and the same amount of meat." So in an even nastier tone, I said, "Did I ask about the amount of meat or the price? No. I asked for a Philly Chicken with No Bun. Thank you." He just placed my order and my brother says, "Don't be surprise if you find some special sauce or a hair floating around in it lol."

7/11 - Keto Day. Decided to step on the scale and weighed 205.4 lbs. I was like WTF!!! What is going on? At this point my weight is fluctuating up and down. I think I maybe starting stall soon and my body is warning me. It could also be water weight.

7/12 - Another Keto Day. Went out to eat with my mom and brother and I was upset because I could have the Tacos of Bell. My mom keeps saying, "Oh you have your meal prep and you have been doing so good on your diet. Taco Bell is not good for you." I was like then why are you eating it. She says, "I'm grown and your mama. Do as I say and not as I do."  She is right but sooo annoying sometimes.

7/13 - My day was healthy. Received two new Hidrate Spark bottles. Gave one to my mom and brother. They are in love and I set them up on their phones.

Breakfast: 2 egg whites boiled with salt.

    Snack: 2 pickle slices

Lunch 1 - 2 : 2.1 oz of turkey with a tomatoes, a little cheese, romaine lettuce and my special dressing. (Broken up into 2 meals)

    Snack: 21 olives.

Dinner 1 - 2: 4 oz of ground beef, a little cheese, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and salsa. (Broken up into 2 meals)

Sorry about the stall. Good for you for standing for yourself and you were polite. I love that part. Your brother cracked me up.

@Newme17That is her favorite saying. Other than, "I am not your friend. We will become friends when you pay a bill in this household." Oh that one makes me laugh because I will look at her like...really....I pay bills....yeah....we friends now...lol. I bring my bottle everywhere but I have been slacking in getting about 40 oz lately.

@Meryline I have an insulated bottle that I use for the gym. I will take those ounces and it to the Hidrate manually. However, I used the Hidrate for when I am at work. During that time I will not drink much of anything because I am busy working.

@Apple1 I really am running on autopilot at this point. I think every mom has said that line lol.

@Sweet as Peaches It is okay. The stalls will happen. I am not stressing it. I have come so far and I will continue to move forward. There is always bumps in the road and we have to jump over them. I just wanted him to understand that just because I am heavy does not mean that I do not want to watch what I am eating. Like do not judge a book by its cover. My little brother is just like my mother.

  14. I was looking for a recipe to use with leftovers and I came across Fathead dough on Ditchthecarbs.com. Has anybody ever tried this stuff? It looks really good. There are tons of keto recipes on the site with pics. They even have a low carb kids section, which is awesome, because I've been omitting bread from most meals and I make some weird combos now. 😁

    Vent..complain..self pity perhaps

Agreed, meal planning/prep can get old. I do Paleo recipes and low carb on YouTube along with Keto. These keep it fun and interesting. And theworldaccordingtoeggface.com is a great website. Keep on keeping on. Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    1st restaurant experience post op

My wife and I went out for Mexican food today. I'm seven weeks post op. We skipped the chips and salsa (fortunately she's eating keto as well) she got Mexican style chicken and steamed veggies and I got grilled chicken that came with a side of rice and beans. It was a lunch portion so I easily ate the chicken and a couple bites of refried beans. I pushed the rice around. We sat and talked and it was not awkward at all. Once you can eat real food it gets easier.

    conspation

@Dabearo, it has been for me. But I follow a strict keto diet so I have no fiber, my protein is over 120 grams per day, and I only have 20 carbs. It just goes with the territory.

    conspation

I have struggled with constipation since the surgery (and I am 9 months post-op). If I haven't gone by the third day, I take a dose of Milk of Magnesia, and it always does the trick. I've just learned to live with it. It is par for the course with a keto way of eating as I understand it.

    6 months in the hospital

Screw the insurance companies! they approve drugs that cause suicidal thoughts, seizures and death. Medicine is experimental by nature, it is always possible for different people to have different reactions. Do we know why some people are successful and some not, do we know exactly how the nerves and chemicals are affected after a VSG is performed? We don't even have long term data on 20 year VSG success yet, we are literally the guinea pigs. Although keto seems to be the way to go, there isn't even a standard post op diet that is being recommended by bariatric surgeons. Don't get me started on diabetes, obesity, autisim, BPA, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, vaccines etc... WE ARE THE GUINEA PIGS!! End rant
  20. Sherrie, I sent you a PM and would like info on the group you mentioned. Berry78, I have just wondered if Keto worked for anyone after WLS, especially anyone who also suffers from Hashimoto Thanks! Sue
  21. I'm not telling anyone in my family either, besides my kids obviously, and my boyfriend. I am telling my co workers because they'll notice the obvious with me healing, and not throwing up anymore ha ha. They are close to me and very supportive though. As for everyone else, I'm telling everyone we're going to Cabo for vacation. They all have judged me for 7 years over "failing my band" and wasting the money. I'm not dealing with it again. I've been doing keto since March and have lost 25 lbs. So after my surgery I'm going to let them think that's why I'm still losing. I will still be eating keto. Just with a better tool.

    Suggestions and Help

I am over 3 months out. So my schedule is different and I do Keto Diet for myself. My day consist of the following: Breakfast - Shake or 2 egg Whites (boiled or scrambled) with 2 pieces of turkey bacon. Or a lettuce BLT wrap (turkey bacon of course and lite mayo). Snack 1 - Turkey Salad (Romaine Lettuce, 2 oz of turkey and Slice Tomato). I also make my own salad dressing. Lunch - Stuffed green Bell pepper or diced chicken with guacamole, mozzarella cheese and some sour cream. Snack 2 - Protein Bar Dinner - Whatever was left over from Lunch lol. Snack 3 - 14 Olives and 1 pickle. I love my Olives and Pickles. My suggestion is try Pinterest. Type in "Low Carb or Keto Diet Recipes". You will find a lot of interesting recipes to try. I hope this helps. This is just a limited list. Each week is different.

    Breads Products!

Sorry, didn't mean to direct my comment at you! I was referring to those who insist keto is the best way to eat (not just for them personally but in general). You just literally can't eat fruit or beans on keto, you don't have enough carbs in the day. So those become "bad" foods on that diet. I personally think that's crazy! But I do know keto works for many people, so to each his own I guess! I'm going to do exactly what my surgeon tells me for at least a year. After that if I want to experiment with different ratios of carbs or fat, I'll do it. But I figure I've been knowledgeable and well-versed in nutrition for years and I'm still extremely obese, so I'm gonna go with what the person who's rearranging my organs wants me to do, LOL!
  24. Interesting that milk and ice cream are the culprits as they both have high sugar content compared to the dairy you can tolerate. Good luck to you and your husband on keto! You can do it!!!
  25. I don't drink milk at all, or eat ice cream because of the issue. but yes, cheese and butter are A-OK. I know, it's weird. it's hit and miss. Meats- well i'm generally ok with most everything that I make at home, but the same meats from the work cafeteria don't sit. It JUST occurred to me that while I use lard, butter, etc...they are most likely using some cheap vegetable oil. I see a new GI doc in September as mine has retired (I swear, ALL my docs are gone and I've had to get a new family doc in the past year too)...i'll be having an EGD in October. I'm going to talk frankly with her about this issue and see what her thoughts are. In the meantime, hubs and I are going to give keto a try and start on the weekend as I work the next 2 nights and don't want to be suffering the onset of keto flu at work. already got my chicken bones and chicken feet to put a batch of bone broth cooking tonight. also got some new eggs, bacon, and going to put a few staples in the fridge like deviled eggs, asparagus, cheese, and salad. Ate (loosely) keto for several weeks while having a health issue recently and did good, but always kept my carbs higher than true keto, so this may prove differently but i'm excited to start and try
