    Nausea & Vomiting

Hello. I am a month out (yesterday) from gastric bypass. I have had a very difficult time getting fluids and food down since surgery. I have gone twice for fluids due to becoming dehydrated. My Dr. has me on nausea medication that helps some. I'm struggling the last few weeks with throwing up even if I'm not nauseated. I've thrown up Fairlife milk, chicken broth, Greek yogurt, applesauce, even Popsicles from time to time. Anytime I put food or liquids in my stomach, I feel heavy and bloated. Has anyone dealt with this? Did it get better quickly? I'm barely eating more than 3-5 Wheat Thins a day and drinking Gatorade. I'm miserable and am not sure what to do.

    I need your help!

Hot coffee or hot tea helps me when I'm tight. I'm post-menopausal so I don't experience the hormonal shifts that others deal with.. I can't advise on that. But I know what you mean about being too tight for yogurt.. I had yogurt for Breakfast this am and had to stop and take a shower before I could finish it.. not that I threw up on myself.. but that I felt tight and sometimes a warm shower will help. You didn't mention how much Fluid you received on your 2nd fill. My largest fill ever was 1cc. I don't need big fills to get results. Usually I get .2cc's, and occasionally I get .tcc's. (that's POINT 2 and POINT 5). You might be another one who needs to creep up on a fill. Sure, we have to go in more often, but the incidences of too tight/unfill are greatly reduced. Hope you get some relief in the AM.

    Help! Hungry Or Full?!

I have concluded that the pain is residual air from the surgery. I checked with my surgeons assistant yesterday, reviewed everything I've done and how I'm doing it, and she said that I'm absolutely on track, it's just air pain trapped. I find that lying flat gets rid of it. Honk - I agree every surgeon seems to have a different post-op diet. I was directed to do the first two days of either Water or Protein shake, then advance to the full liquid diet for two weeks. The only non-liquid food the surgeon has on his plan is the non-fat greek yogurt, but it can't have seeds or chunks. The fat free greek yogurt seems to be pretty thin also - nearly the consistancy of the tomato soup. I feel better knowing that it's not pain from eating at all. I'm post op 6 days now and feel amazing. I actually felt hungry last night...but that could have just been smelling the chicken my husband was cooking Thank you all for your input and support!

    Best Protein ??

Have to start using protein powder a couple times a day by drinking or adding to yogurt. Does anyone have any favorites? That can be purchased at a store not on line.
  5. According to my doctor's office, mush means blended up or pureed before it goes into your mouth. That way you can't accidentally swallow something too big. So yogurt, applesauce, thin oatmeal, are good choices. What I did was to put whatever I made for my family for dinner into a blender with some liquid (chicken broth, mushroom soup- depending on what I was blending up). The beginning of the mushy stage I made it the consistency of applesauce. During the second week, I made it a bit thicker. It's normal not to have any restriction at this point. (or to have very little.) You won't start to get restriction until you start to get fills.

Banded June 1st and have no restriction

Thanks Jen that helps. I actually have been doing the yogurt, applesauce, etc I just been wanting to do other stuff. But I guess I must stick to the rules.

    Liquid protein?

I was considering the Unjury protein powder and/or Slim Fast Lo-Carb for breakfast (in the car) and then having a yogurt and banana for mid morning snack or something along those lines. I was actually hoping to make either the Unjury, Isopure, or Slim Fast Lo-Carb part of my daily protein intake well after surgery. So do you think they are referring to not drinking your calories as in something with little to no nutritional value??
  8. Some background first..... I had my first fill last Thursday. I was on liquids for 2 days -- did good on that -- and then gingerly started to eat normal. Well, as close to normal as you can. :rolleyes Today I made me a yogurt smoothie for Breakfast and thought I would make me a small ham sandwich for lunch with some salad. A lunch I have had in the last couple of weeks with no problems. So I took a small bite of the sandwich -- bread and all -- and oh boy! :help: It hurt so bad!!!! I even chewed it for a long time.:guess I sat there for a bit, trying to figure out where I went wrong. I drank all my Water first, it was a small sandwich, good protien in the ham......ah ha! It had to be the bread. So after the horrible feeling went away, I tried just a small piece of the ham, no bread (hey! I was still hungry! ) and everything went down ok. So I finished my ham slice -- still ok but I made sure I chewed, chewed, chewed! Slowly at about half of my small salad -- still everything ok, but I was so full!:speechles But at least I didn't feel like someone was running a bottle brush up and down my esophagus and wanting to throw up. So it had to be the bread. I guess it's true that things really change after your first fill. I haven't had any problems with any food since surgery, but now......I really have to watch what I eat.
  9. Sleeved on the 25th. Bad nausea the first day but otherwise manageable. Don't know how anyone gets all the protein in. I've been getting the fluid in fine but seriously struggling with the protein. Ate something other than isopure and protein broth today. Tried Greek yogurt For breakfast - yum but can't eat much. Had high protein very liquid oatmeal for dinner with flax milk - tasty but incredibly filling. No real gas till now - guess real food equals real gas.
  10. RickM

    Eggs post op?

Yes, I have a sleeve, but progressions can vary widely depending upon how much inflammation you have in your stomach. With minimal inflammation, fluids should go down fairly easily (sip, sip, sip!) but with a lot of inflammation it can be like feeding it through a pinched soda straw - sip a bit, let it settle through, sip a bit more..... I had little problem with any fluids or even soft things like yogurt, puddings, Jello, etc. so I apparently had little effective inflammation. My wife, on the other hand, had significant inflammation and had a hard time moving Protein shakes through her system for a while. Both results are within the spectrum of normally expected results. Are you having problems with just getting the liquid down, or is it more the taste and consistency of the Protein Shakes? If liquids and semi-liquids like yogurt are difficult, then firmer things like eggs will probably be harder still, unless you make them reeeeaaallly runny. If it's more of a gag reflex thing (and some of those Protein drinks are gag-worthy,) try a different brand, diluting it with some other flavors, or as suggested, mixing it with Water or one of the fake milks (almond, soy, etc.) if milk seems to be a problem. Temperature can make a difference, too, some can't take them too cold or warm.
  11. I can't stand sugar free jello...so, no, I didn't eat that. I had protein shakes, pureed soup, pudding, yogurt, and sugar free popsicles. Every surgeon's pre-op diet is different, so be sure to follow your surgeon's instructions.
  12. Nicki D

    Pre-Op Diet

Mine was protein shakes, greek yogurt for a total of 60 grams protein, 4 ounces of juice, 8-12 ounce of broth, unlimited sugar free jello and popsicles. This worked very well for me in 3 weeks lost 22 pounds.

    Messed up already?

Ok, maybe TMI keep this for your baby steps to yogurt etc.....some great recipes that are easy for pureed and liquids steps .....Vanilla Custards are so good, and don't have any of those funky chemicals at store....http://www.bariatriceating.com/2013/04/post-op-help-full-liquids-your-first-baby-steps-with-food/
  14. So, since I started the pre-op program (3 months in my case), I have been trying to really limit myself on what I am eating, taking the nutritionist's advice on what to eat. Has anyone tried really limiting your caloric intake similar to what you would be limited to following surgery? I understand that you would really struggle with an all liquid diet or a diet of only 400 or so calories without the help of the surgery, but I am looking to see if anyone tried, successfully to approach it in this manner? I think it would be a great way to ease into the new diet following and not be such a shock to your system or daily routine disruption. I have been trying to stick with this philosophy and fortunately never had an eating disorder like binging or depressed eating. I am simply a case of being able to eat too much without feeling full, and eating all the wrong foods..... Initially in the beginning of this "experiment" the first week or two was tough becasue I had to fight all the cravings for sweets and carb heavy foods but now, 4 weeks or so from starting, it is MUCH easier. My cravings are gone, for the most part. The other day, I did have a craving for a PB and marshmallow fluff sandwich (sounds strange but tastes soooo good) so i made one....only to take a small bit and had it off to my wife who can afford to eat it! let me tell you how hard it was to have it in my hand and not eat it! But, I took a small bit of it and it completely satisified the craving and I no longer wanted it. At this point, I eat 1 Protein bar for Breakfast, a handfull of raw almonds for a mid morning snack, a cup of chili for lunch, another handful of almonds for an afternoon snack, and then a zero fat, high protein yogurt for dinner. I fill the rest of the time with about 80-100 oz of Water and that's it.... Anyway, let me know your experience with the calorie limited, high protein, low carb attempt prior to surgery if you have been able to follow through with it and if it helped following surgery.

Help i dont eat yogurt or cheese!!!!!!!!!

Have you tried the soy cheeses in the natural foods section of your grocery store? They're pretty decent, esp if you're adding them to things. There are different brands and types so you'll have to find one you like. They are different in texture too so do make note of that. But experiment and see waht you find that you might like. As far as the yogurt, have you tried greek yogurt? I can't stand yogurt or cottage cheese (it's a texture thing) but I LOVE greek yogurt! By a small container and see if you like it. There are different brands and flavors, even the plain is good and I can't handle even a bite of plain yogurt!

    8 days in!

Hi everyone, Day eight and I am feeling much better. I went yesterday to have my stitched taken off and was so looking forward to a long soak in the bath but they put another lot of stitches on "just to be on the safe side". Thats another week and no bath. I also went for quite a long walk yesterday and it was ok, didn't tire me out so much, which is good. I am a little obsessed over calories and yesterday was the first day I had over 500cals. I am going to try to get 1000cals today. I have been living off WW smooth yogurt (its very runny) and WW soup so both are very low calorie. But I got some Slim Fast yesterday so I am going to have that today and hopefully that will get my calories intake up to the 1000 mark. I am very worried that after all this liquid as soon as we go onto mushies we will put on weight. And I'm still not hungry. Must get off the scales! Is anyone else a slave to them?

Help i dont eat yogurt or cheese!!!!!!!!!

I don't eat any dairy generally, but LOVE cheese so much I am always on the hunt. Most makes me sick- even soy cheese (casein is in it.) BUT I found YOGURT CHEESE at Trader Joe's. It's lactose free and tastes good to me. I can't eat yogurt at all, so I don't know why I can eat that, but it's good and doesn't make me sick, just a LITTLE gassy, but that's a lot better than what usually happens to me!

General Lap Band Question and Answer

    1) Do any of you use baby spoons or forks for smaller bites? Not me. 2) Do all of you NOT sip Water when eating? I don't drink while eating at all. I wait an hour after eating before drinking. 3) How much alcohol can get you buzzed now that you are banded? Since I only drink before eating, and it's on an empty stomach, I do get buzzed fairly quickly...2 glasses of wine, or 1 martini. 4) Who can still eat fast food? I usually opt for Taco Bell if I have to eat fast food. I eat taco salad, pintos and cheese, or the inside of a beef burrito. 5) Who can still eat bread? The only bread I've eated that didn't bother me was Pepperidge Farm Thin Sliced Wheat Bread. And based on recommendations here, I toasted it. 6) Do any of you do Atkins? Not me. I don't low-carb, but I stick with whole grains. 7) Do any of you do Weight Watcher's program? Not me. I hate counting points or calories, and weighing and measuring. 8) Does sex count as exercise? I think anything that gets you active is a bonus, but I've heard that the "calories burned" figure for sex is not as high as people have been told in the past. I guess it depends on your technique, how long you go, and how often! Above all, have fun! (Sorry, couldn't resist that.) 9) Anyone have problems with chewing/swallowing/digesting nuts? Nope. I keep raw nuts in the shell in a small basket out on the counter. If you have to crack the nuts, it slows you down. Nuts are very healthy, *but* you have to limit the quantity. I usually eat no more than 7-10 almonds, or 4-5 pecans or walnuts. 10) What about cheese? I stick with low-fat cheese, and avoid melted cheese unless it's mixed in with something else. I had trouble choking on melted mozzerella before being banded, and don't want to chance it now! 11) Anyone already noticing their skin sagging? Yep, but not too bad yet. But, I sort of think of sagging skin as battle scars in the battle of the bulge! 12) Any good snack ideas out there besides veggies? I am burned out on them!! I like non-fat, sugar free yogurt, nf sf pudding, a *few* raw nuts, turkey Jerky (but it's salty, and can cause you to retain water), and once in a while if I'm craving Peanut Butter, I'll have a tablespoon or so on a rice cake. 13) Any good tips period? Write down everything you eat. Even though I don't think anyone wants to weigh and measure forever, do it in the beginning, and periodically after that just to learn about portion sizes. I've found that journalling helps "keep you honest", plus serves as a good reference for later. If you plateau, you can go back over your journal and maybe try something different. 14) How long should it take to lose 10 pounds if you are doing everything correctly? For me, about 5-6 weeks. But, I expect that to slow down as I lose weight. Tami

Stocking My House And The Perfect Diet

Welcome!! I had SF popsicles, SF Jello, FUZE Slenderize drinks, Crystal Light, Propel Zero Water, chicken/beef broth, New whey Protein shots (42g each)and Protein powder for shakes. I was on a 21 day clear liquid diet after surgery (except he allowed Protein Shakes after 1st week) so I had everything I needed. If you are allowed soft or pureed foods in week 2 pickup some Greek yogurts, cottage cheese, cream Soups, etc. Don't overstock on the stuff though because in the beginning you won't be able to eat much anyway. Can't help you much on the 100 lb loss yet. I am more or less following Stage 2/3 of the Atkins plan. It has been working for me. Mostly protein first is the key, so we stay full longer and don't lose muscle mass as we lose weight. I took off 6 weeks, which is more time then most people because I had short term disability at work so I was able to heal completely, both mentally and physically before I returned. My mind was a fog for the first few weeks after surgery due to not having much food intake and it was great to have a eating/drinking schedule established before returning to the work place. Good luck and congrats on your surgery!

    Question one week tomorrow!

i've been doing sugar-free pudding with Protein powder. yogurt makes me gag...trying some now and my stomach is gurgling like crazy. i will be one week out tomorrow and getting my staples out. i find that F/F creamed soups are quite tasty and comforting and i have been using carnation no sugar added protein shakes. they taste so much better than that clumpy Protein Powder crap i bought. i add 1 tbsp of instant decaf coffed dissolved in hot Water to the shake to make it a cafe mocha flavor. no problem getting those down.

    Fresh postop RnY

I feel very good considering I just had surgery 2 days ago. I've been able to eat jello, yogurt and plenty of fluids. Going to have creamy soup tonight. I have 6 incision sites and they look great. Dr Garth Davis said my surgery was Video perfect. I am so glad I don't have any drains. They removed a lap-band. It feels great to finally cross the hurdle of having the surgery done. The waiting and liquid diet had me very nervous. Sent from my SM-J700T1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    1 week check up.

I went for my 1 week check up today. My doc checked my wounds, and asked me if I wanted a fill. I have so much restriction right now, I do not need one. I can barely eat, and am rarely hungry. I said no fill for me, and he was fine. My doc said he wanted me to hop under the xray to look at my band and port. He said, some docs put the port into muscle, but he doesnt. so it can move a little. He said, the xray doesnt show which way around the port is, so he wants to put the needle in to check:blink: Here I was, thinking I was avoiding a fill (and happily avoiding a needle), but then turns out he still wants to jab me. I tried to get out of it, but I lost the arguement. It barely hurt, and I felt like such a baby. I wont be scared next time I go when I actually need a fill. But I wonder, when will that be? I feel tight all the time. My trip to the doctors, 1.5 hrs each way, was my first excursion since my surgery. I've just got home, and I'm very sore, stomach muscles aching. I think I overdid myself a little. On a good note, yesterday I went to my chemist, and asked for something to relieve the gas, and I took whatever it is she gave me (its written in Korean, so I have no idea!). This morning I woke up and did 2 of the biggest farts since my surgery. I felt so much better!! Seriously, TMI, but who cares. Relief!! Thought I should put my typical eating at the moment: Breakfast: Cup of Yogurt (runny kind) Lunch: Soup (either corn, mushroom, broccoli, or pumpkin. very basic.) one pack is 150g, and I never finish half. Smoothie: 100g yogurt, banana, and some milk. Dinner: One scarmbled egg, (hard to finish, last night) or tonight, 2 pieces of large spinach mozarella ravoili, cut up and chewed a gazillion times, and 1 tablespoon of mashed potato with milk in it. I try to drink as much water or very watered down juice as I can in between meals. The waiting to drink after a meal is hard. I know I need more, and I'm hoping to get some protein shakes this weekend to help me meet the minimum. I'm probably only managing 20-30 grams so far, and I think thats being generous. I was 105kgs pre surgery, (231lbs) I'm 98kgs, (216lbs) 7kgs/15lbs in less than a week? I think I should start my ticker!!!:crying:

    Kentucky, "who's your Doctor"

Hi Zolableu-- Sorry it has taken me so long to reply to you--just haven't been on the computer much in the last month or so. Hopefully by now you have the answers to your question but I wanted to make sure you didn't think I was ignoring you. As far as what I eat, I can honestly eat anything I ate before, just smaller quantities and now that I have pretty good restriction with the band, I have to eat much slower and concentrating on chewing my food up really well, especially with the first few bites of my meal. I don't do JUST fruit for breakfast, although my band seems to be tighter in the morning, so I generally have a container of yogurt with a couple of spoons of granola mixed in. Occasionally I will have some banana. I really like the Kroger Carb Master yogurt--it has 12 grams of protein in a 6 oz. container and only 80 calories and the fruit flavors are very yummy. The regular lite yogurt only has 7 grams of protein I think. For lunch, especially Monday thru Friday when I'm at work, I usually have a lean cuisine meal, and I try to concentrate on the ones that have between 250 and 350 calories with 15-20+ grams of protein. I also like the healthy choice but they seem to have more sodium and not as much protein. For dinner, I usually have whatever the rest of the family is eating but I have smaller portions and try to focus on the protein first and then the veggies. My calories usually fall around 1200. I try to watch the carbs to make sure I don't have huge amounts although, I don't avoid carbs, I just try to be aware of how many I'm taking in. My best advice is to READ THE LABELS on food--I've become much more aware of what's in the food I'm eating. My husband calls me the Food Nazi!!) I try to make sure my protein is at least 50-60 grams per day. I don't hit that every single day but it averages out that way over the week. I'm not a big fan of protein shakes although I do drink one once in a while. If I'm on the run on the weekend or find myself getting hungry in the late afternoon, I will grab a protein bar. Usually a South Beach or a Zone Perfect--they have anywhere between 140 and 210 calories with between 10 and 21 grams of protein. They taste pretty good especially if you need a chocolate fix!! For the most part, I don't snack--just my 3 meals a day with LOTS of water, crystal light, iced tea, and coffee--no soda!! I find that it tastes TERRIBLE now but I had pretty well given it up even before my surgery. I try to go to the gym 3-4 days a week also for about an hour and a half. I've been slacking on that since I've been on vacation but I intend to get back to it this next week. Typically I do about 40 minutes on the treadmill (3.8-4 on the speed with an incline of 4) and 30 minutes on the elliptical or the bike with 20 minutes or so on the weight machines. Ok I think that's about it--I'm really sorry for the long-winded post, but I wanted to get it all out there. I'm not telling you this is what you need to do but this is what has worked for me since I had the surgery in November. Everyone's body is different and you should follow the instructions of your doctor and do what works for you personally!! I dearly love my doctor (Vincent Lusco). This is the best thing I have ever done for myself. Dr. Lusco asked me this week if I have any regrets and my answer was ABSOLUTELY NOT. I told him that I could be his poster child for this surgery!! I firmly believe in this program, as long as you look at your band as being a TOOL and not expecting the pounds to just drop off by themselves. You have to be willing to work at it, and I have worked very hard, but I don't believe I could have accomplished what I have without my band. It's there to remind me if I have a lapse in judgement and try to eat too much. The bottom line is that you still have to make good food choices and exercise. This is all about making a lifestyle change and making yourself healthier. Again--everyone is different but this is what has worked for me!! Good luck to you and to all of the Kentucky bandsters!! Keep me posted on your progress!! Sorry this is so long!!

    Not doing what i should

Try some simple "replacements" - example... make pudding, but add a scoop of protein powder to the mix.... then the milk - wa-la protein pudding! Replace your soda - with Crystal Lite (helps to get your 64oz of liquid in a day) Make sure that each meal/snack you have has more protein and less carbs! (yogurt, cottage cheese, apple w/peanut butter, string cheese & nuts... chili, tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad, refried beans ....etc) Go to the Food a Nutriton section of the forum - there is a great post on "what did you eat today" - should give you some really nice ideas on what folks eat. Good luck to you - we all get off track... just find your way back! You can do it!!!

    Feb Bandsters June Challenge

Hello Ladies, I think I have good restriction now after fill 2. I haven't had a full blown PB yet but have serveral times felt that stuck feeling and some slime. Not enough to vomit. I also noticed if I swallow too fast I get painful hiccups. I've even swallowed too quick with yogurt. I haven't lost any in 3 weeks since fill, though so I know I need to pick up the exercise and Water routine. I painted my son's room and this morning was sore from climbing my little step ladder up/down. Also had a sore butt and arms. I also noticed my hair is coming out in more strands than ususal. I was bad all week not drinking my Protein. I usually eat chicken or some kind of meat and yogurt, but not enough, I guess. I really wish I was down 50 by now. I'm also been eating more junk food. chips hotsauce, ice cream. I need to get with it. I do feel a lot better though. I've noticed I can sit in a booth table without my belly rubbing against. I also put on a pair of shorts the other day, I havent worn in 4 years. Felt great! I think you all are doing great. You really inspire me to work harder 6 Days exercise level 1
