How many of you had to have an open procedure?
LBD replied to Mrs.FullerRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ruptured Aorta. A very rare (and obviously serious) surgical error. Recovery from that surgery was rough because I had an upper respiratory infection and was coughing and sneezing with this huge incision/dozens of staples in my gut! 8 days in the hospital...NOT fun. I never had the gastric bypass then, (2007). With the help of this forum, I've managed to muster some strength, reason and objectivity and will get the VSG in the next month or two. Again, not meaning to scare anyone, I would just say that it's important to be in a hospital where there are other specialists available- as in my case, I needed a vascular surgeon to repair and graft the artery. -
Water and Food Together? (Specific Question)
Djmohr replied to Beck90's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I cannot speak regarding sleeve patients but from a bypass perspective it is critical that you do not eat and drink at the same time. The reason for this is because you can accidentally push larger amount of food through the stoma causing it to stretch over time. Once that stretches, you lose the value of the surgery because food makes its way through faster causing you to need to eat more often. If you happen to be someone like me who probably does NOT chew enough even now, that can be a big problem for you. Never eat and drink at the same time. I read an article about this and followed up by asking my doctor. She confirmed this is true. The article led me to believe that it is true for sleeve patients as well but I am not positive about that nor did I confirm that portion. Maybe someone else knows for sure. The stoma is the part of our surgeries that can get stretched by not following the no drink rule. There are many myths about the stomach stretching when it is in fact the stoma that opens to the small intestine. -
Hi friends! well my Bariatric Bypass was Feb 10th, so here i am 9 days post-op, about to go back to work on Monday and I fear I might be eating (drinking) too much, taking in too many calories. I'm seeing people on here (I realize different programs and doctors and situations vary greatly) weeks post op eating 300 to 400 calories... wow!! So I'm taking in around 850 a day and getting in around 60 ounces of water and walking or riding a bike between 20 and 30 minutes EVERY day. Now I'm down around 13 lbs +/- in the last week or so, I'm pleased. Sometimes I think reading people describing their situations can lead to me questioning myself and my program; you know what they say, A little knowledge is a dangerous thing lol...!!!

Scaled Hasnt Moved In One Week! Three Weeks Post Op
klaaspice replied to klaaspice's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm taking vitamins so that helps. We have the protein powder, 3 different flavours - my dad had gastric bypass done last December so there is no lack of options! I just find it gross no matter what I mix it with. -
I failed my band and Dr recommended the sleeve.
fatandoverit posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I started at 321 and got down to 242.. big whoop.. I needed to be down to 165.. Started gaining and have gained back 40 pounds. My problem is not portion control.. it's sweets.. Ice cream is the big one for me. I have it daily and cannot stop. Even as I read the boards I just went into the kitchen to get some cookie dough.. How nice huh?? I am looking into overeaters anonymous. I went to my surgeon and he said that the Dr that put in my band totally recommended the wrong thing for me.. I should have gotten the bypass which is what I wanted in the first place. Now my original doctor is suggesting I take out the band (he will do it for free) and get the sleeve (which is $12000) as sweets with the sleeve are tough to handle.. But who has that kind of money laying around.. NOT ME!! I am dying to be thin... I'm miserable daily and don't know what to do.. -
I am literally sitting here waiting for him to call!!! thanks for responding I was so excited to see someone with the same surgeon and clininc.... I have Kim too, and it has been a week or so, whenever I call she does not answer and I work in nursing so my hours are crazy, we always miss each others calls. Was November 30th the soonest you could get in?

I am 30 years old. Just had my laparoscopic gastric bypass on Monday. Still in hospital recovering.

My band is the 4cc band. Well, I had my adjustment back in November....could it just keep getting tighter??? I am so confused. I left a message for the banding nurse, but they aren't the best are returning calls too quickly. Back to being the squeeky wheel. -Wyld Blu-

I'm just beginning to research WLS - i'm a total skeptic
BLERDgirl replied to AimeeCakes's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Their is good and bad with every surgery. There are also more types of WLS than lap band and bypass. Currently the gastric sleeve has become very popular. if you could find a program in your area that offers a WLS seminar that would be your best place to start. A good seminar walks you through each procedure and the pros and cons of them all. I had the sleeve done and so far have had no problems. I didn't even need pain meds in the hospital. I think it's part what state your were in physically, and part mental attitude. I was completely confident that I was doing the right thing, no nerves or tears going into surgery. I exercised regularly and I followed doctor's orders leading up to surgery. So far I've had no problems. -
No support from boyfriend and family
bikerchick519 replied to bikerchick519's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I also am having a hard time paying for the surgery but I think I have it all worked out now for November. It will definitely be a sacrafice in some ways but it will be so worth it. I hope things work out for you too financially. And I hope he comes around once he sees how happy you are losing the weight and feeling better. -
No support from boyfriend and family
bikerchick519 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have been researching weight loss surgery for years and have decided on the sleeve with Dr. Kelly in Mexico. It looks like the middle of November is when I will be going. My boyfriend, of 3 1/2 years, is totally against it. He doesn't think I need surgery and thinks I look fine as I am. I'm 5'7" 250 lbs. He is also very concerned about it being done in Mexico. He refuses to go with me to have it done, stating his reason is, he just can't support it when he is so against it. My daugher has lost 30 pounds on weight watchers and is now becoming a personal trainer so she doesn't understand why I need surgery either. She thinks I can just do it the old fashion way with diet and excercise. I've been on every diet known to man, most of them twice. I've always gained the weight back and then some. I am definitely doing this but wish I had their support. My middle daughter will be going with me and she is the only one who is supportive. She is also overweight and understands my need to do this. -
Hi, I'm just starting this process so bear with me but I'm wondering what made you decide to go with the lapband instead of sleeve or bypass...I've come wo the realization that I just can't loose my weight without some help but I'm unsure, nervous & plain old scared! Can anyone share their pros / cons?? Thanks!

Medication Absorption
Loobles replied to Jennifer Deen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's exactly what I want to know. I'm currently taking Pregabalin, Metformin, Cyclizine and Morphine. I was wondering about how the RXY bypass especially might affect medication absorption. I've just started looking into this, so please do feel free to suggest a good starting point. I won't see a surgeon for quite a while as my clinical psychologist has said I have to lose 5% of my bodyweight before she'll start the funding request process. Thanks Hi, I don't know about the various meds, but while I was reading about Bi-Polar meds, I came across Morphine and pain meds, and it was talking about extended release and immediate release, and for some reason they were saying Morphine was one of the only pain meds that was being absorbed in the patient studies. Don't know if that helps, but just thought I'd throw that out there. Thanks, I did find a thread after posting. I did look but still managed to miss it! Oops! -
Please don't think I'm judging just trying to understand
Leah28 replied to micheleangelina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with 2flyguys. Lots of people have lost well over 100 pounds with a band so don't know who has told you it isn't "entirely effective for large weight loss". I want to lose around 125 pounds all up. So far I have lost nearly 50 pounds. Its all about making the band work for you. It is no easy feat to lose weight with or without a band... I still have to constantly monitor what and how much I eat, and I work my butt off at the gym 6 days a week. Maybe I could lose weight with bypass surgery without having to do all that... But I'm not comfortable with permanently changing my stomach. I'm much more comfortable knowing that I can have the band taken out if I ever need to. -

Hello! I am new here (1st post) and will be going in for my 6th month appt next week, only to find out that bcbs took that requirement away? I did lose about 18lbs so I guess thats a good thing? I have an H M O so I need a referral to a bariatric surgeon from my PCP. I've seen a nutritionist already, in my 1-2 months. Is there anyone that might know the timeframe in which I can get in to see a surgeon and also what else i have to do?My insurance will most likely change by November, (relocatuon out of state) so I was hoping to get the surgery done by then... PleaseAdvise!

What is dumping exactly?
Jachut replied to ChrisW123's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Its symptoms such as nausea, chills and shakes that occur when a whole ton of sugar and fat hit your circulation too quickly. it happens to bypass people becuase of their missing intestines, the stuff doesnt get broken down/absorbed gradually, it suddenly hits the intestines and boom, straight into the blood stream. not something a bandster needs to worry about although people with blood sugar issues and diabetes can also get this occurring. Easily avoided by not eating sugary/fatty foods. -

Hello. First Post. Getting Banded 11/9/07
msunshne posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi everybody. Been reading the boards about 2 months. This is my first post. Right now I'm in day 5 of my all liquid all the time phase before my banding on November 9th. Just did my PCP physical and blood work. First time ever having an EKG and an X-Ray. Man, oh man, do I miss chewing, LOL!!! Mornings and afternoons are fine; it's nighttime that's kicking my tush! I so want something hot and *chewy* to eat Just to answer some questions: female, thirty years old, West Palm Beach, Florida, children's librarian, self-pay, Dr. Rosas from the Wellness Center of the Palm Beaches, probably about 200 pounds to lose. *waves* -
I had 4cc in during surgery, then 4cc, 1cc, .5cc and .5cc for a total of 10cc in a 10cc band. He did my last fill in November and verified the 9.5 before he added the new fill to make 10. I have, of course, SOME restriction but I can still basically eat anything and everything. I have lost nothing in about 5 weeks but I have another appointment in 10 days and will ask for a small fill. Hopefully, that will jump start things.

From: VSG Surgery on November 16th, YAY!!
Indian Sleever posted a blog entry in Gastric Sleeve in India
Hi! My VSG date is 16th of November 2010 which is just a few days away. I'm feeling a little anxious already, but i stay motivated looking at the success stories in this forum. I am a 25-year-old Male from Bangalore, India. I am currently 266 pounds and my goal weight is 161 pounds. So i have over 100 pounds to lose. Current BMI: 41.5 The doctor is Mr. Rajshekar Nayak (http://rnayak.com/about.php) of Gunaseela Hospital, who has already performed over 50 VSG's and over 90 Gastric Bypass surgeries. Recently he was featured in a newspaper for performing the surgery with just a single incision of 1 inch under the belly button. Here's the link to the feature: One inch wonder He is a well known surgeon and i also spoke with a few of the peeps who underwent VSG from him, and they're very happy that they did it. I asked Doc if I should bring anything along with me on the day of Surgery, he said to bring just the diagnostic test reports and to get admitted in the hospital the day before surgery. But i want to know if there's something that would help me stay comfortable. I'll start blogging about my journey, and this is my first entry. Pray for me! Namaste. Sprung a leak at 6 months out, no more sleeve or tummy
gmanbat commented on MrsGina's blog entry in 6 Months, this isn't good.
So sorry to hear that. My wife has the bypass and is doing very well. She has lost all of her excess weight and has the energy of a race horse. I understand the sustaining power of faith in Jesus Christ in a crisis. He has brought me through many a storm. God bless you.
