Do You loose weight slower
Neubian60466 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had revision surgery on Nov.8th sleeve to bypass due to Gerd and a Hiliatal Hernia. After doing some research it suggest that revision patients tend to loose weight at a slower pace than other weight loss patients. Has anyone else heard that? I’ve lost a total of 35lbs since surgery and Tuesday will be 2 months. -

Weight loss, dating and confidence
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to journey2-199's topic in Singles Forum
So mine is a little different- I met the guy I’m talking to about 3yrs ago when I was 330lbs at 5’7” (170cm). I didn’t see him much from nov. 2019 (VSG dec 2019 and RNY revision for gerd aug 2020) to Sept. 2021 (155lbs) (I was either on medical leave or working a bunch because of Covid). Anyway, I was super nervous about being seen naked or intimacy related things because of skin and scars (I have a midline scar from sternum to pubic bone). He told me that it’s not the outside that he cares about it’s what’s on the inside because the outside doesn’t always stay the same. And while I’m still super self conscious about the loose skin and scars he makes feel okay with just being myself around him. -
Hell yeah! I say I’ve earned my loose skin. It’s a daily reminder of where I’ve been & where I am now.
-
Now that is amazing!! I can’t wait tell I can say that! I look forward to so much. How much did you lose? Do you deal with lose skin? I’m 5’4 and 280.

Hi there, I don’t have exactly what you are looking for but have some thoughts about confidence. I have just scheduled a few consults and am >300 lbs and have continued to date. Not everyone is interested in me. That’s fine and I don’t let that stop me. Therapy has gotten me to a place where I see myself as strong and confident despite my imperfections I found reading Brene Brown’s books or watching some of her Ted talks on the power of vulnerability, shame, and the power of imperfection very useful. Now there is weight/size but after surgery there may be extra skin, stretch marks, and even regain so my one piece of advice is to try to think of all of those physical “flaws” as battle scars from fighting a disease that not everyone has to deal with. If people you date don’t give you the respect you deserve then screw them. You are strong in your imperfection and deserve better.

What are the specifics for insurance to cover any plastic surgery? I started at 334 and am currently 161, and have excess skin around my belly, inner thighs, and arms. Haven’t really approached the idea as I just “assumed” that would be an out of pocket expense

Suggestions on helping with loose skin
Arabesque replied to Mebadwow's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Can’t do anything with excess loose skin except to surgically remove it. Sorry. The skin has been stretched out for too long like a well used hair band. You may get some bounce back depending upon your age, genetics, how long you were obese. Also in the months after you stabilise your remaining fat does tend to resettle a bit so some areas may refill a little. Weight or resistance training may help the underlying muscles support it better. My friend has become an avid cyclist post surgery & her thighs are rock hard with great muscle definition but she still has loose skin on her upper thighs - she showed me last week 😁. All those therapies like IPL, RF, thermage, ultrasound, cryotherapy, etc. seem to cost a lot & offer short term if any effects on small amounts of loose skin. There are quite a few threads about people’s plastic surgery here if you’re interested in reading about other’s experiences. -
I had my sleeve done in June 2020 and have lost 173lbs. I’m pretty much at my bottom now and have the loose skin around my belly, inner thighs, and arms. Just trying to get advice on the best routines to help reduce this without plastic surgery. Appreciate any advice

So hidden bonus: my problems drinking and eating, where it wasn’t going directly into my stomach but backing up my esophagus is much better! As soon as I could drink again after my horrible day of vomiting, I could finally take a sip and not have to wait for it to go down. It’s making it possible to drink the required amount of water finally! I guess it must have knocked something loose? 😂

Week 5 Post Gastric Sleeve and Struggling
summerseeker replied to Jenn5120's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am at 5 weeks too and am quite behind the rest of our group. I can not seem to progress to any soft foods. The only things I can eat are dry crackers, yogurt, and chicken soup [strained] I have never made it anywhere near my recommended water intake. Had very few of my vitamins. I start with nausea and vomiting it continues for days . I finally got a Doctor today after the Christmas break and he has prescribed a GERD tablets so I am hopeful. I am so weak and shaky and have no energy. My only consolation is I am loosing weight. ....... Protein - failed Water - failed Vitamins - failed Lets hope we get on course soon -
why revisions?
Arabesque replied to liveaboard15's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I saw a study that said about 10% of gastric sleeve patients seek a revision, 5% of bypass patients have a revision & 26% of lap band. In 2019 around 256 000 people had bariatric surgery: 18% had bypass. 59% had sleeve & 1% had a lap band. (Included lap band just out of interest.) Some people develop GERD after sleeve surgery (I read it was about 10% so that seems to match the above revision stats) & consequently require a revision if medication or other management options don’t work. If you already have GERD sleeve is not for you. I had reflux before my sleeve which, like @Hop_Scotch, I mostly managed with dietary choices. Still have reflux but it manifests itself differently now. Some surgeons recommend bypass to patients who have more weight to lose or who they think need extra help to loose their weight as bypass is considered the ‘stronger’ surgery. Sleeve is a less invasive surgery (fewer changes to your digestive system). Generally though the average stats on how much weight is lost with either surgery is about the same at the 5 yr mark (about 65% of the weight to be lost). Malabsorption issues & dumping are a consideration with bypass. You’ll need to continue to take vitamins & may have to adjust medications you take. Malabsorption is rarely an issue with sleeve & dumping is not common. Sleevers often do not need to continue taking vitamins (individual health issues may mean they have to). Personally I haven’t taken vitamins since goal as I absorb all I need from what I eat. Some choose to have a revision because they have had regain or want to lose more weight. Regain can occur because of complacency, bounce back weight, medication, changes to your lifestyle, job, health, etc. or sometimes just life in general which can just throw crap at you. Have a long conversation with your surgeon as to which is the best surgical option for you from a medical perspective & which can best help you achieve your goals (health, weight, lifestyle). Then you know yourself best as to which surgery best suits how you want to live your life after surgery & whether you will need the stronger surgery to get you where you want to be in the long term. All the best. -
Any pre op Hair and Skin Prep tips
Arabesque replied to Jessica1024's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That’s what happened to me. Reached my goal & had hardly any loose skin at all. Little pinch at the top of my thighs & my arms (bat wings) were a little empty. Actually was quite chuffed about how little I had but then I lost that additional 11/12kgs & there it was. Mind you I still don’t have much at all. Not worth having surgery. And I can wear a body con dress without ‘suck it in & hold it firm knickers’ & you can’t tell I have any loose skin. I was 54 when I was losing. I had been at my highest weight for about 4 years & prior to that I’d been bouncing between my usual 60-75kg range. Genetics also helps. -
Any pre op Hair and Skin Prep tips
ShoppGirl replied to Jessica1024's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am 42, 5’8” started at 235, currently 169 and losing and I do not have any loose Skin nor did I lose any hair yet and I am almost 9 months out. I was very lucky in recovery and i was able to get my protein in from day one (i think that helped with the hair) I imagine if I get too much smaller I may still get some loose skin but like catwoman said it should not be extreme. My NP said just not to expect to have a six pack. Fingers crossed. I think that’s really all we can do. -
Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first
Meganator replied to chiquitatummy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had to readjust the headrest on my car because I'm loosing butt-cushion that props me up. It's probably the weirdest one I've had so far. -
No creams or exercise will change once the skin has been stretched. There is no possible way to make it look like before gaining weight. You could try led facial light therapy for the face's skin, which may work. But it's not going to work with the rest of the skin. Building muscle can help your appearance, but removing the excess skin is usually the only solution. It's a joint surgery nowadays. A plastic surgeon cuts the excess skin, and you remain with some bit of scars only. Or at least these are the only options I know.

Got my surgery date! Suddenly scared...
Esi replied to greenwitch17's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congratulations! So exciting that you will soon be getting a tool that will help you lose weight. Yes, upcoming surgery is scary. What helped me is writing down all my questions (and the responses from doctors, billing, etc.), getting anything possible ready ahead of time for the hospital and recovery, tying all loose ends with work/home/family ahead of time, and trusting in the experts. I don’t mean to scare you, but hospitals are short-staffed due to COVID. My requests for pain relief regularly took 30-90 minutes, and I wasn’t allowed to have my husband stay overnight to be my advocate. If I had to do it again, I would have gone ahead and woken him up at 1am to call the nurse station himself. I also would have involved the charge nurse or patient advocate much sooner. And when I could walk the next day, I should have walked myself over to the nurse’s station to insist on meds. Yes, I also worried that I wouldn’t be successful. So, I only told my husband. And I am private so did not join support groups, but found this forum such a blessing!! The wonderful people here have provided all the support, ideas, encouragement needed. GL! -

Congratulations! You look amazing! I love what you said about carbs. I hope I can do the same. You look to have about the same build as me. How have you handled extra or sagging skin? Sent from my SM-G988U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I had surgery on 11/10/20, but started my weight loss efforts on 7/5/20. If you’ve been here a while I’m sure you’ve seen me lurking about the forums. Stats: SW 339. CW: 165. I am a 5’10 woman in her 40s. I work full time and have young children. My current BMI is 23, I started off with it closer to 50. I knew it was going to take me a while to hit goal- I had 174 lbs to lose. I did all the calculators pre-op that said I would be lucky to get under 200 lbs, but I decided that just wasn’t going to apply to me (haha). My plan was to focus on fruits, vegetables, and healthy proteins while ramping up exercise. I eliminated cookies, pastries, and candy but that’s about it. I don’t do low carb, because that isn’t how I’m planning on living the rest of my life. I focus on calorie reduction, which sounds like oh if that’s so easy why did you need surgery? Well cutting calories is possible if you aren’t hungry all the time no matter how much you eat, and if you can fill up on the healthy things without it being like flash paper into a volcano. I honestly did need the surgery, and I’m not going to pretend it did the work for me, but it gave me the help for the work I wanted to be able to do. Six days a week I do a split between running and rowing for a half hour. I’m going to run in a 5k this spring, which has been a dream of mine for years. I exercise on my lunch break every day. Yes, I have some loose skin. It’s nowhere as bad as people make it out to be. I am not exactly planning on running around in a bikini so it’s not like it limits my life at all. It’s not visible in my clothes, not even tight fitting ones. I might get it removed some day, but if I don’t I’ll still be happy. This weight loss has been the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for me. Life is difficult when you are morbidly obese. It’s difficult physically, emotionally, and socially. This weight loss hasn’t fixed every problem in my life, but I didn’t expect for it to. It fixed my weight related problems, and I had a lot of them. This surgery can be life changing, but it’s not a magic bullet. You still have to make huge life changes. But if you feel sabotaged you your own constant hunger, cravings, and binges, this can really be the tool you use to dig yourself out of the seemingly insurmountable weight you need to lose. This isn’t a finish line for me. I am still working on hopefully losing another 15 lbs, and I’m never going back to my old eating habits. I know I signed up for a lifelong change, otherwise I’ll be right back where I started. But finally hitting goal was a nice early Christmas present to myself. Sorry for the essay, but I don’t really have anyone in real life to share with who gets it!

Any pre op Hair and Skin Prep tips
Arabesque replied to Jessica1024's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
As the others have said: it’s just a part of the experience. Your natural hair loss cycle accelerates as a result of the shock of the surgery, stress, anaesthetic, decreased protein intake, dietary changes, etc. The hair you lose was destined to be shed it just happens a bit faster than usual. Just keep on top of your daily protein goal & take your multivitamins. Taking additional supplements that supposedly stop hair loss or strengthen your hair will only help new growth not the hair on your head which is already dead if it does anything. Nothing happens to your new growth cycle so you still ate growing new hair while your losing just at it’s usual rate. A lot of us cut our hair shorter so the new growth doesn’t have as much to grow to catch up plus short hair always seems to look thicker. Same with your skin. Protein is important. You can try taking collagen & silica. Keep it well moisturised & regularly exfoliate. You may look more gaunt & tired for a while but it does settle once you start maintaining. Genetics, age, highest weight, length of time being obese all influences how much your skin has been stretched, how much will bounce back & how much loose skin you end up with. All the best.
