    Intermittent Fasting

Hi all!!! Im due to be sleeved on 8-21-17. Im excited and a lil nervous but am anticipating the out come. I just wanted to jump in on the IF...It was one of the the methods I used along with the Keto lifestyle and it worked very well. But then I developed heel spurs and had to have foot surgery and was in bandages and a cam boot for a while and was knocked out Ketosis. But it really works if your disciplined. I am considering the Ketogenic lifestyle along with IF again after surgery when im fully healed. I think it's great for those who hit a plateau in losing. mybariatricjourney

    Not telling Mom/some others....opinions

Sleeved 5 days ago and only my husband knows. When I was on the preop diet, coworkers were giving me unsolicited opinions daily. I told them I was trying the keto diet. Well, did I get lectured or what about why and what I was doing was wrong. Everybody suddenly became a diet expert. It made me realize I made the best decision by not telling them about the surgery. I would have had to endure lifetime lectures from them. Never mind that some of them could use this surgery too.

    361 Days Later: My Story

Thank you for following up and sharing more about your story! I've been aiming for keto eating as I believe that will be best for me for the long haul. I'd love to hear more about what is mentally taxing about no longer being morbidly obese. I understand what you said in another post about being in a constant state of flux which is exhausting. And not being able to find a good therapist is frustrating. What are some of the other new problems you've encountered at normal size? Maybe you can post a picture sometime so we can see what this kind of success looks like! All the best.
  4. My doggy is now back home in his cute little splint and cone. He is soo adorable and annoyingly smart. He figured out how to push the cone back so he can bite at the splint. He also is running on 3 legs but walks on all 4 (Except in the dirt lol).

My stall is finally over. I moved 1 lb on the scale on Sunday. I finally moved. I have been bouncing between 203 - 205 lbs for the longest. I am finally 202 lbs. I think its over. I have been sticking to my Keto and meal prepping. I cannot believe that I look like this. I feel amazing. I look amazing and although I have a long way to go, I am soo proud of the progress that I have made. I am almost to my second goal of being under 200 lbs. I have made the decision that I want to bring in the New Year at 155 lbs. That is an average of 9 lbs over the next 5 months. I can handle that. I have already prepared my Keto weeks and the grocery lists. I just want to reach that third goal by the end of the year and I believe that I can.

My ex-bf has been texting me and calling me a lot. Honestly, I really do miss the fool. I just do not want his insecurities destroying my progress. I am highly conflicted. I know he is a great person and I truly love him a lot. I just do not understand why he has any insecurities. The man workouts and is built. He is very handsome and extremely intelligent. As of now, he is being supportive. Sending me work out routines to try, new recipes and even went as far as to get me a class doing Aerial Silks (Something I have showed extreme interest in). I really need to have a one on one with myself regarding our relationship.

Yay for broken stalls! 😊 I wouldn't know but I will celebrate with you.

I do think you need to have a serious one on one with yourself. Also, have you talked to him about his behavior and insecurities? Maybe he needs to hear it and so he'll reflect on hisself and change. You don't strike me as the kind to not say anything, but maybe you didn't??? I actually broke up with my hubby as we were dating. I was ready to get out of the club, partying scenes and he wasn't. Told him he has to change for hisself and not me. So I told him to leave. Not long afterwards we're back together. lol. But he did change (slowly) and he did listen to me. Now I've got a great man, a husband who will move mountains for me, regardless of what I look like. He's secured in himself enough to not project what little he may have, if any, on me. I usually puff him up with compliments though, so that helps. Lol. So anyway, I hope it works out for the way you get blessed, whether it's with him or not. But until you know which way, enjoy taking care of YOU and your cute adorable little doggy.

  5. OMG, I was thinking the same. I have done a keto diet before and it worked. I think there is somekind of kick back epsecially since they required 3 of the shakes a day. I would do better if I had the soups or bars. I hope your surgery went well!
  6. First, you have to really realize that you must be on a "diet" for the rest of your life. If you are working out, it may be a 2000 calorie one (maybe).. but you will always have to watch what you eat. (And don't just watch yourself eat that entire pumpkin pie!). Once you wrap your brain around that fact, then it is time to do the mental work of figuring out what sort of plan will work for you. Each of us must figure out what will work for us LONG TERM. For one, it's keto, another is vegetarian. Then, back to basics.. calorie free beverages, protein first, no drinking with meals, at least 3 meals and a snack each day, no flour or sugar during weight loss. Etc. Track what you eat now to get an idea if how many calories to start with.
  7. I forgot to answer this. The first 3 months I ate what I was supposed to eat according to my dietitian's plan for me (protein, no fat, no carbs except non-starchy vegetables). When I came in on my 3 month followup, I'd lost already 68% of my excess weight (or excess fat). The goal for my doctor is for his clients to lose 30 - 50% in their first year & I surpassed it. The week before my 4th month post-op I drank alcohol for the 1st time (was on my anniversary vay day) & have been following the Atkins & Ketos diet. The only starch I eat is the occasional potato, but that's less than 2 oz a serving. My serving size is still small, about 5 oz a meal. And I exercise 3-5 days a week. I feel great. I was obese since 2008 & got the solution for it this year with WLS. I was never obese before that so people that knew me back then say I'm looking like my old self. My new friends I met after 2008 are proud of me. I don't think people treat me that much differently. I've always acted confident & have a big personality so people treat me based on how I am, not my looks (thankfully). I've always ignored haters when I was fat & will still ignore them now that I'm thinner. I keep positivity around me. Height: 5'0" Weight for WLS consultation: 216 lbs. Surgery date: 2/13/17 Goal: -71 lbs for healthy BMI (about 145 lbs). Current weight: 145 lbs, now ready to lose 15 more past goal. My profile picture is not me. It's my "FITspiration" body.

Keto vs paleo??? Have you ever tried it?

That makes so much sense. That def falls within the keto guidelines. I'm actually going to try what you're doing starting august 1st and see if A) i can maintain it, and do i lose more this way.

Keto vs paleo??? Have you ever tried it?

I love that you included your average macros, it made it really easy to visualize. I'm so glad that's working for you. Do you ocasionally eat certain foods like greek yogurt, beans, fruit etc? For me at least giving up those foods makes me hesitant about a keto diet. But it should still be ok for a regular low carb diet i think.

    Gained 2 pounds!

Did you have any sort of classes with your NUT? Or get some sort of eating plan? In general, if you can eat real food, protein shakes should supplement your protein intake, not be the main source. So 1 protein shake a day if it'll make the difference between the food you eat that day and your protein goal. More if you need more protein. As a general guideline, these protein numbers are about the norm from what I've seen: absolute minimum of 40g or protein a day for women and 50g for men. As you move further out, I've seen 60g all the way up to 120g a day be the protein goal. I aim for a minimum of about 70g a day, usually surpassing it. You'll want to stay under 60g of carbs while early out. If you really really want to low carb it, people who are hardcore into keto (a diet that is high fat, moderate protein, low carb) only consume 20g of carbs in a day or less. Fat is up to you, there are so many conflicting studies out there and you'll just have to figure out what works best for your body to lose weight. If you're physically active, I found this elsewhere on the forum and thought it'd be helpful in terms of calorie progression: Months 1 through 3 = about 800 kcals/day Months 4 through 6 = about 1000 to 1200 kcals/day Months 7 through 9 = about 1200 to 1500 kcals/day By 12 months out = about 1700 kcals/day By 18 months out = 1800 to 2200 kcals/day In order to know how much you're consuming, you NEED to track your food. There are many apps for it out there including SHealth which is pre-installed on samsung phones. I personally use myfitnesspal, you can find me under the name tia_527. All you do with these apps is put in what foods you had at each meal and what amounts. You can also log exercise if you want. These apps will tell you how many calories you eat and what your macros were (how many grams of carbs vs protein vs fat you've had).
  11. Hello, Newbie Terri here. Saw my surgeon Wednesday, almost there! He wants me to lose 10-15 pounds pre-surgery. I then saw his nutritionist yesterday and she gave me a Keto food plan to assist in this weight loss. I dont have a surgery date so this isnt a pre-surgery plan...there's too many non-clear liquidy things on the list...LOL I've had some success on the Atkins plan but this looks a little different since I am allowed coffee, nuts, seeds, protein shakes and 1 serving of fruit a day. Does anyone have any good keto recipes or direct me to a good bariatric keto blog? I don't know what I don't know so please help me thank you

    Mmmmm... coffee

Oh no! I'm so sorry [emoji52] In the meantime try doing keto. It's great if you are carb sensitive. You may enjoy it. I do!
  13. Hi y'all from the big ol' state of Texas. I'm a long-time reader, first time poster seeking long walks down the meat isle and gentle laughter in the produce department. I'm new to the whole WLS gig and am trying to wrap my head around new possibilities for living a successful, healthy, cancer-free life. I'm a 6 year breast cancer survivor who battles with stage II lymphedema in my left arm, a lovely parting gift of cancer treatment/surgery/reconstruction, so I no longer do much on my old blog. I was a very active writer | blogger specializing in low carb keto living. Now I'm just a noob, grateful for the information, knowledge, and wisdom of fellow WLS losers (veteran and newbie alike). I look forward to participating here and getting to know each of you. TIA by the way! (BTW, I'm not really seeking a date with ya --so don't be "skeered" I might be a letch or anything. I'm in a very happy 17 year relationship with my SO, Mr. Fluffy .)
  14. To me, paleo has too much work. Atkins has always worked best for me & even better after WLS. I consider myself inbetween Atkins & Keto. Carbs for me are the devil so it works.
  15. I bought an air fryer & it's the best thing ever. I loved fried food (like fried chicken). I found a Ketos recipe using baking powder for the chicken & put it in my air fryer & it tastes the same except it's not fried & healthier.
  16. 7/26 - Worst day EVER!! My dog was hit by a car and his back leg paw is broken. My mom had him off of the lease and he was peeing on some grass near the curb. He was walking on the edge to come back around when he fell into the street and a driver clipped his back right leg. The driver didn't even stop.

He is okay and just requires surgery to get pins in his right ankle. He has surgery on 7/28 in the morning.

I broke my Keto for the day. Anxious eating has always been my problem. I had Tostitos and salsa and just ate half a bag without realizing it. It took over an hour, however I still ate it.

7/27 - Got the price of how much this would cost. Over $5,000 for 3 nights stay, surgery, pins and painkillers. I cannot complain. It was funny to watch people look at me as I paid the medical bills up front. They were like, what does this young girl do and how much money does she make? I was looking at them like, I will pay anything for this dog. I just want to be able to take him home already. He is such a resilient dog though. He continues to try and get up although it hurts. I told him we will be twins (I have screws in my right ankle).

Kept to my keto today. Had beef chevy's for snacks. Sooo good.

Thank you for all the support. He is home and back to being his rambunctious self. I told him, we are twins and licked my nose and curled up with me. I had seriously missed him while he was in the hospital. Now he is talking back and catching his little attitudes like normal, except he cannot jump off of the couch (low couch) anymore lol. Now he goes in the corner and turns his back to me. He is such a teenager.

Keto vs paleo??? Have you ever tried it?

So question for all of you: what are your macros? Regardless of whether you're doing a modified paleo, keto or whole30. How many calories do you eat on average? Proteins etc? I did a keto calculator online but obviously that's geared towards someone with a regualr sized stomach, so i was just curious.@williamrjomes2@clementine sky
  18. So far the only food that bothered me was scrambled eggs, but I can eat them now if they are mixed with a lot of veggies. Everything I liked before I still like. I haven't tried any foods I don't like..lol.. I am not craving bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, or sugary foods at all. I am so thankful for that and I have no desire to ever eat them in any kind of quantity again. I used to love crackers and cheese as a snack, but I have no problems turning down crackers now. This is what I love about the keto diet. It really takes those food cravings away. I look forward to my salmon, greens, chicken, ect..
  19. I am only two months out and lately have been eating 900 kcals. But I'm doing keto and the fat in my foods bumps it up.

Keto vs paleo??? Have you ever tried it?

I'm definitely going to look into whole30. Thank you. Do you still do paleo or keto?
  21. Keto was great, it got me to the required # for wls. I saw a lot of people in the Facebook groups go nuts with the fat bombs and sugar free candy and wondered why the scale didn't move down. It's not a free for all with the fats lol Paleo is also great, but one needs to be wary of those paleo sites with 23984923874 'paleo' baked good recipes. Those treats will get you on the wrong path quick. Whole30 is my favorite thus far. It confirmed those pesky grains were doing all sorts of bad stuff to my intestines and made me feel so much better. Keto/low carb with mostly Whole30 rules works best for me.

Keto vs paleo??? Have you ever tried it?

For me Paleo is boring AF and too limiting, there is no way in hell I am giving up cheese for anyone or anything and I don't even it often, maybe 2 or 3 times a week but still. If you don't stick with it, you will pack on pounds just like people pack on pounds not sticking to Keto. It doesn't matter what diet anyone follows, what matters is that you like it enough that you can stick to it long term. I feel like everyone is looking for some magic diet and there isn't one. You have to find a way to eat, hopefully not a "diet" that you like and can stick to, it might not be any known plan. You just need to find something that you can stick to and maintain a calorie deficit or calories at maintenance level without feeling deprived.

Keto vs paleo??? Have you ever tried it?

I was inspired to try the keto diet after seeing photos about it on Instagram from people who'd had the VSG. One of my concerns about it also came from someone I follow on Instagram. She also has a YouTube channel, and back when I was researching having the VSG her videos were helpful to me. She's around the same age and had been about the same BMI as I was when I had the surgery. She was able to get down to 128 (from a surgery weight of about 200, I believe) following an incredibly strict keto plan, but eventually could no longer be that restrictive. She rapidly gained back more than 25 pounds, putting her back into an overweight BMI, which made her feel so discouraged and depressed. After months at the higher weight she is trying keto again, though, so obviously she still feels it was valuable. Prior to having the VSG I frequently yo-yo'd by doing really low carb diets. It was precisely the same pattern - I'd strictly limit my carbs, obsessively follow recipes from online, obsessively dream about carbs I was depriving myself of, and then eventually cave in, and would rapidly regain. With my lower carb, but not strictly low carb diet more like paleo, I've gotten down to a 20 BMI, and maintained it for a year. My weight has only fluctuated by about 5 pounds. That's just me, though. My morning breakfast has more carbs than what's allotted in the entire day for keto (high protein yogurt, low sugar fruit, and kale smoothie). You might find that the keto diet fits you perfectly.

    Ketogenic diet post sleeve?

I actually just posted about this topic too not realizing this post existed. I think keto is a great idea provided that you're truly disciplined with what you eat. Keto isn't low protein, you would still get in all your daily protein needs. It is higher fat (healthy fats only) and it does mean no carbs and no sugar. Which most of us are trying to do anyway. I know someone who did keto (he did not have wls surgery and he lost 60 pounds in 4 months) he loved it because he got to eat eggs and bacon and chicken thighs and beef etc. he felt full and never deprived. He said it's easy to stick to. I'm planning on trying it myself.

Keto vs paleo??? Have you ever tried it?

@clementine sky i'm glad you liked paleo. You made a good point about keto, i wasn't sure how it would work if i stopped. I wasn't sure if i would re-gain or not. I think for me personally keto might be easier for me to follow than paleo. But that's just because i prefer dark meat and i can do without starchy veggies etc. i plan on trying it, not sure if i will be able to stick to it long term. My fear for either plan is what happens if once in a blue moon i eat carbs or grains, will i blow up or have a reaction? Idk. But thanks for your insight, i found it really helpful.
