  1. Yesssssssss thank you! I didn't do this so I could spend the rest of my life still tied up in diet culture bs and I definitely didn't do this to hate a very real and very important part of who I am and what my life is. There are a couple of doctors on yt who have really great/helpful videos for the most part but when you get to their videos about eating it goes completely off the rails. I saw one the other day recommending intermittent fasting to wls patients! How are you a doctor literally recommending disordered eating habits to patients trusting you to give them evidence-based information about how to eat!

    Trauma

Prior to committing to wls I considered joining a group study at a local hospital focused around incorporating a joint therapeutic medical and psychological approach to weight loss. Scheduling didn’t work out bc of my current work travel obligations but something that stuck out to me in the initial interview processes that the doctor said. He indicated that people who struggle with their weight especially those who have experience physical, emotional, or sexual abuse (all with higher prevalence those who are overweight than the population in general) often reached a point in their weight loss that they struggled to move past because they found comfort or almost protection in the invisibility that being a larger person can sometimes provide. This is something I can relate to certainly, but more to the point of your question I think having the surgery gives us a sliver of determinism - obviously there is still much work for us to do but we will most definitely lose weight compared to without it. And with that weight loss so disappears that protective invisibly that can offers victim of abuse or trauma comfort. I could see how even just after surgery this could even subconsciously raise anxiety and drum up thoughts of those past traumas. I also believe our bodies memories in places outside the brain. “What our bones know” etc. And it’s important to remember surgery is a trauma to our bodies. Experiencing the trauma of surgery itself may trigger tho use memories. I admit that I’ve dwelled on a past assault more than normal in the month since my surgery. I speculate it’s related more to the former than the latter reason, but luckily I’ve worked through it significantly in therapy in the past and know how to cope. If possible you might find some benefit from a short course of therapy to work through its. Regardless feel free to message if you ever need someone to listen. Sending love and strength.

    Time of the month ...

I had my bypass revision on 12/13/2022, my period came down a few days after. It has now been close to 4 weeks of it non stop. Some days it's bright, other days its brown but the one thing is that its been constant. Previous to my surgery I had a Mirena for 1 year, I had not had a period for over 10 months. The Mirena was removed in November, a few days later I got the depo shot. So my depo was fairly recent to my bypass. I called my gyno and she is not concerned at this point since there is no odor, pain or fever. Has anyone experienced this? Do you guys think its the shock of surgery? A mix of all the BC hormones recently?
  4. Someone who watched me be obese for most of my life is currently doing this. Even pre-op he'd make small comments whenever I ate one of my dad's Sunday dinners instead of my own. & he'll sometimes remembers things I ate a month ago & a few days ago I posted a photo of a frozen pizza box at the store with a TV character I like on it (didn't buy it, just took a pic of the character) & he said 'take it easy!' as if I was about to wolf it down. Its frustrating bc I KNOW I've put in so much effort in my weight loss & don't need the policing but I also know it's bc he's seen me at my worse. He wants me to be better, but I also feel there needs to be a discussion on how to do it. It CAN be hurtful & they need to know that
  5. Hi all, I had a question. I got approved for my surgery with my temp Cigna Insurance but had to undergo a 6 month waiting period. The six months also ended at the time of my open enrollment to get my permanent insurance for BCBS for federal employees. My procedure will be covered but my doctors office says they might require an additional letter from another doctor at least one year prior to the date of surgery for the insurance to cover it. I just wanted to see if this was correct or if anyone who has BCBS Fed knows of any waiting period? Thanks for any info! It’s been 7 months waiting already and I seriously am just ready to get this done and get healthy.

    Is it Normal?

yeah, well that awesome! Glad it not uncommon bc I was starting to worry LOL
  7. If I'm not hungry I don't eat. Simple as that. Just had major bloodwork ran and all my numbers are super great. Doc was pleased with my progress and my numbers. I went from being an almost on insulin diabetic to a A1C of of 5.1 without medicine. Cholesterol is within normal limits; vitamins are within normal limits. I'm off all the medication I had to take before I had the surgery for medical reasons since I left the hospital. Heck I've even reduced some of my mental meds. I've started listening to my body like I didn't before, and I don't force-feed UNLESS it's the 2nd meal I've skipped then I'll at least eat a string cheese or yogurt or something small since it's usually me skipping lunch and dinner and I don't want to wake up at 11pm hangry. I'm not one to skip breakfast because I know I'll be hangry around 2nd period and not really be able to do much about it. It's almost impossible to concentrate when my new tiny tummy demands to be fed... it seems louder and more persistent than my older, bigger one 😁. Edited to add: Also felt it necessary to say that I don't skip meals often... some days may be smaller meals than others but it's not very often that I skip a meal unless I am just flat out, not hungry, the thought of eating makes me feel nauseous (and that can be because of emotions or exhaustion as much as anything else). Otherwise, especially when I'm working, I'm on a pretty good breakfast, lunch, dinner schedule and I eat when it's time to eat and I eat until I'm no longer hungry which can change the amount. The recent successful bloodwork makes me feel like I'm on the right path.
  8. That was excellent thank you lol. I guess I'm afraid that I will be one of those dumbasses too haha. That is my personality. I push myself and think I'm super woman, and I am not lol. That was helpful because this type of information is so hard to find on the net because the sites are written by doctors and they say how long the recovery is but it is too general. The way they word it, I picture myself having to lie down for 2 weeks straight, and I can't do that with a bunch of little cats depending on me to be fed. Thank you.

So popcorn is NOT my friend....

Wow really?! Thats good to know bc that's one of the foods I've been so excited to have again! My program says to avoid popcorn for the first 3 months bc our stomachs might disagree with them now I worry I won't be able to handle it either! I will try it next month 🤞🏻 In terms of food changes, I find I crave cheese less & I like salads & veggies more. Probably the most ideal taste change I could experience lol

    Am I overreacting

Your mom sounds a lot like my mom. Mentally stuck in 90's/2000's diet culture that makes them think anything enjoyable is bad for you & you can only lose weight is your food is green & tasteless. I'm now close to 3 months post op & she has learned about food & macros during my journey. I've made it a point to educate, as annoying as it is sometimes. Ofc you don't have to do that bc I know how stubborn moms are but NO you did not over-react. Our journey is so specific to us & they're on the outside looking in. They won't understand unless they spend the same hours we spent reading about this. Good on you for sticking to ur plan!

    November 2022 surgery support!

Wow! Well done. I’m having such a hard time drinking what I need to while just sipping. Plus, eating is a nuisance. I’ve stalled on weight loss in my second week bc I’m not eating/drinking enough…I suspect. What’s your schedule/ technique?
  12. LMAO!!! I'm a fed also, and my travel per diem is like a bonus check! LOL!! Only time I spend $$ is when I dine out with colleagues to be social, and even then, whatever I order ends up giving me leftovers for my next 3 meals. ha ha!

Hello, been trying different foods so far everything has sit well. I had the chili yesterday but after analyzing it bc of the small amount I ate, it was only 2g of protein so im skipping that for now Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. Hi Everyone! My name is Kristin. I'm happily married to an amazing man, that is my #1 supporter! I have 2 kids, a 19yr old son & a 16yr old daughter. I am 36 yrs young from CO! I had Duodenal Switch WLS on 7/26/22! I am 4 mons post-op right now! The biggest reason I had surgery is bc I'm a T2 Diabetic! I was taking 2 types of insulin, taking injections 5x/day! I was diagnosed over 10 years ago and I was just tired of taking insulin, tired of having to constantly check my sugars, tired of being overwhelmed by constant thoughts of nothing but my blood sugar levels! I was tired of being overweight, tired of being tired, tired of getting winded from my front door to my car, tired of being in pain from my knees, my back, & my hips! It was time for me to do something and when my husband and I found out our job got the SurgeryPlus+ benefit, it was time to take action!! Started the journey in April and had surgery in July, it went quick! My hubby and I flew to SLC,UT for my surgery! My heaviest weight was 293lbs before my 2week pre-op diet, my weight at surgery was 269lbs, & now I weigh 205lbs! Almost 90lbs down and almost to ONEderland!! This journey has been tough, hard, overwhelming, emotional, crazy, & amazing! Still looking forward to what's to come! Hope you will join me along my journey & I hope we can be friends!! Just taking it one day at a time!      Sent from my SM-F711U using BariatricPal mobile app

    I’m HUNGRY!

I was also sleeved in Sept & I've found that my hunger is actually just me being excited to eat food. If I'm distracted that feeling doesn't come up. But in those instances when I know my brain won't shut up I like the MINI Quest Bars. Specifically the minis bc they're only 80cals. Also pre packed beef jerky strips (60 cals) & Dry Roasted Edamame snacks (The Only Bean brand) all high protein & delicious! Those are enough to satisfy that need to munch something
  16. This was a learning process for me. Right now I feel my best when I eat 3oz of food exactly. Weighing my food & finding a comfortable number I can go to became essential to me. I eat 5x a day & like to wait a few hours between every shake/snack/meal bc it will also 'buid up' for me. Maybe space it out a bit more too! I wish u luck!

    November 2022 surgery support!

I just had the surgery on the 29th... I woke up crying just bc I woke up to pain and the most extremely dry throat I've ever had. Ice chips have saved me and soothed throat and stomach. I went walking about five times since yesterday to try to alleviate the gas pains in my stomach, mostly left side, all the way up to my left shoulder but the counter effect is my stomach hurts now... I found that holding a pillow to my stomach while walking does help... it won't eliminate the pain but it helps. I can tell once I'm healed I will be very happy and thankful for this procedure. It's going to be life changing and any surgery will cause soreness and some pain right after it's done, but I'm not regretting it at all. Ice chips are my friend. Getting in and out of the bed in my hospital room is my enemy and eventually I found myself resting in the recliner in my hospital room and that was much better on my stomach. I also have a heating pad on my stomach and feel pretty good just resting here... lol but know I've got to get up soon to walk and then be discharged from hospital. Good luck everyone! 18. Super embarrassed by what happened yesterday. I had 4 viles of blood drawn, ate a small protein bar & went to Walmart to exchange a sweater. Guess who was laying on a bench halfway passed out about 20mins later. I should have gone straight home after getting my blood but during my pre-op days a quick snack was enough to give me an hour or 2 of energy. Not anymore. Thankfully I wasn't alone & my brother brought me an electric wheelchair bc I couldn't walk. My vision & feeling in my hands came back & I was able to walk to the car. Not doing that again

    BCBS Federal

Would probably be best to ask this as a new question rather than on an existing thread for fed insurance. Also be advised surgical programs have their own waiting lists and COVID may strike again so switching a plan that already has coverage to get surgery sooner may not be worth your time. My three month long wait from my insurance ended up being 17 months.

    November 2022 surgery support!

Hey y’all, this is my first post. I had the sleeve on 11/21 & it’s been bumpy. Surgical pain was really bad, which surprised me. I didn’t expect to be pain free but I certainly wasn’t expecting what I got! I ended up needing 2 units of blood & a cardiac consult before I left bc my pulse was so high. They decided it was due to low h & h and uncontrolled pain. They have pumped me completely FULL of IVF. I came home 14 lbs heavier than I went in! I’m 5 days post op & have just now reached my surgery weight. My big issue is that I’m hungry. Stomach growling & roiling churning hungry. So weird. I was not expecting this at all. For full disclosure purposes, I cheated pretty badly on my preop clears. Like BADLY. Do you think I ruined it? That I will never lose my hunger, or just that my hormones need to level out? Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!
  21. Looking for folks to follow and build with who are o a similar surgery timeline. I’m getting the sleeve on December 5. Let me know if you’d scheduled similarly and would like to share experiences and support here. Please feel free to introduce yourself in the comments. I’ve included my own intro below. ABOUT ME: I’m Sarah, a 40yo woman from nyc. I have a senior level professional job as a consultant and work from home most days of the week. I hate failing and I think that’s why weight has been such a hindrance for me, it’s feels like a personal failure. Im pretty active and close my Apple Watch rings most days. I love to swim and do swim laps 30-60 minutes/day - 4-5/days a week. Outside of swimming I love to read, wander the hiking trails in Central Park, volunteer for campaigns and causes I care about, writing, and travel anywhere are everywhere in spite of dreaded airline seats :) My WLS decision: I’ve been overweight most of my life but for a few years after a prior 120lb weight loss associated with disordered eating about 10 years ago. Needless to say most of that weight was gained back in recovery and then some yo-yoing down 50 and up 60 every other year to follow. I imagine many of you can relate to this story. Though I’ve thought about wls surgery for sometime my blood panels and other levels were still in healthy range only my weight was an outlier. But then COVID came and especially terrified me - I was scared if I caught it I would be at risk to lose my life. I made efforts on my own to lose weight and like past attempts I shed 50lbs and was really good for 6 months but then something happens at work and I prioritize that above myself and before I know it I’ve gains it back. This last year I found myself of the gain side of the yo-yo and for the first time being afraid to sit in some chairs, after break a plastic deck chair. I noticed I was keeping myself in bc I was disgusted with myself, holding myself back from dating, from living, and carrying myself with little confidence, with little to look forward to. The tipping point: I went to my nieces dance recital and could barely squeeze into the auditorium seat. I needed to make a permanent change. Two months later I had my first consult for surgery and here I am ready Dec 5 surgery.

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Yesterday was a little tough with the belly button pain, I realized talking, walking too fast and standing too long puts pressure there. Add that I have some coughing and feel like it will burst. Other than that the bigger incision sometimes feels sore and is getting easier to get on bed, still a little struggle to get off bc of the belly button incision. I managed 40oz of water, 4oz of shake and 2oz of broth. Hoping to do better or at least the same for today. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. I have one! Its very effective but I can't use it for long periods yet bc it destroys my muscles lol. It's a lot harder than it looks if youre like me who isn't used to working out. If you are, you'll love it!
  24. Hi you were right I had a stricture which has narrowed my digestive passage and is not letting any food or water pass through. I had an endoscope yesterday but they said it would be too painful to dilate unless they put me to sleep so they are doing that today. He said it could take a few tries so please send your thoughts that it’s only going to take one I’m fed up of not being able to eat or drink 😟

    August surgery buddies!

Thank you for sharing what you are doing. You mention grass fed collagen. Since we don't have Amazon in my country, it's expensive to order here. Do you think marine collagen is as good? There are several local products with marine collagen, very popular but expensive, albeit not as expensive as ordering from overseas. I didn't know there were different kinds of vitamin C, will definitely look into that. Are the dr. Berg hair supplements large? I have serious trouble still taking large pills and supplements, due to nausea and gag reflex. I looked into gummy supplements that my hairdresser recommends, but they have a lot of carbs.
