I'm considering having Dr. Fox to perform my surgery as well! Did you go through True Results?

My surgery date is December 23rd too!! We should be band buddies!!

I'm December 23rd! I've also been eating like a horse (or cow) lately too! What all types of pre-op testing has everyone had to do? I had to get two sleep studies (I have sleep apnea, apparently), a psych consult, all kinds of fasting pre-op labs (of course). I haven't even started my pre-op diet! It's exhausting, not to mention expensive for babysitters and whatnot. (I'm a self-pay.) I thought I'd just schedule it and it'd fall into place with almost no effort, apparently not!

Wowza, I'm paying 10.4k for my surgery, can't imagine having to eat another almost $700 because the port flipped. Do you have the regular size or low profile?

Wow, if that kind of thing happens do you have to pay for it, or did your surgeon do it for free? I need to stop reading this site!! lol

I actually got the depo shot in 2007 after I had my twins, and I gained almost 60 pounds in a couple of months. I've heard of the shot having that effect on TONS of women, but of course not until they jammed that needle in my backside, my OB did NOT tell me of this possible side effect or I'd never have done it. I'm not a medical professional by any means, but I'd advise anyone who asked for my opinion not to get it.

I have a Mirena IUD, I would recommend that, it works wonders. It's low-dose BC that doesn't use estrogen. You can have it up to 5 years and it's ALOT cheaper in the long run than other BC you'd pay for monthly or quarterly for the 5 year span. Also, for me, it stopped my periods, which is pretty fantastic! Some of my other friends also use Nuvaring, and that works well for them, the hard part might be remembering to change it though (for me personally, that's why I got the Mirena, I hate remembering to take pills!). I would just consult your gyno about it, I know some won't put in Mirena if you haven't had at least one child. I don't know your situation, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Wow, how rude can a person be? I guess she's just so used to telling people how to eat since she's a nutritionist's assistant that she thinks she knows what you're going through, too. I'm getting the LapBand in about 5 weeks and my father is very judgmental about everything I eat as well. (If I had a nickel for every time I have heard, "Is that on your diet?" for the last 2 years I would have about $100. Which, coincidentally, would probably get me a fill once I get my band.) I would just explain to her that you don't appreciate her comments, and you certainly did not tell her about your surgery so she could judge your eating habits from here on. BTW, 35 pounds is great - congrats!

I don't have any suggestions - not being banded yet myself - but I just wanted to say congratulations on making the first step in your weight-loss journey! Oh, and it most likely is gas, it seems like it can settle pretty much anywhere, I'm sure people have good advice in the forum as to what to do about the pain.

Your girlfriend is already morbidly obese, she has PCOS, so her weight will continue to balloon... I really don't think that this is a healthy person. (As everyone else said, she may not have health issues other than the PCOS yet, but she likely will.) I'm younger (23) and I don't have any health issues yet, but I'm almost 267 pounds and 5'7", believe me when I tell you it's a hard world out there for a large woman of any age. I understand and acknowledge your fears for her, and I'm sure she is gorgeous at her current weight, but even if your girlfriend is getting the surgery to be "thin" I have a hard time realizing why you're begrudging her this. If a person is unhappy with themselves, they should try and change whatever it is that is making them unhappy. She's obviously not doing it for you, but for herself, so I think that in itself is a good sign that she will not regret doing it. Since it's virtually impossible for her to lose the weight the "old fashioned way," this is a great tool to aid her in her lifestyle change. It's my belief that you should be supportive of her, and that you are being a little bit overprotective (not that it's not fantastic that you're wanting to research it more), just try not to focus on the bad you hear about the band, because the people with horrible experiences are few and far between. And 90% of the time it's user error, nothing to do with the band itself. Every surgery has its risks. I wish you and your girlfriend good luck with whatever she decides! :rolleyes2:

I have only told a few people about my choice to get banded as well (I'm getting it in December), and 1/3 of the people I've told have had negative reactions. Out of only 6 or 7 people, that's kind of horrible. I told my dad last week, but only because I have a sleep study this weekend that I need my parents to watch my kids for. Or else I probably would have waited until the day I got it. ("Surprise, I had surgery!") It really sucks when you think someone you love won't support you, but he was actually fine with it. I hope you find the support you need from your MIL and the rest of your husband's family!

I have one, and I absolutely love it. After having my twin boys, I wanted something permanent, and I don't even notice it anymore! I don't get much use out of it being a single mom (LOL) but like most everyone else, I don't have a period anymore and there are no side-effects like some of the oral BC I've taken. :eek:

*hugs* Everything will be okay, sweetie. I know what you mean, though. I started consulting with a doctor in 2008, and I'm just NOW getting banded in December 2010 after I finally decided to self-pay. Stupid insurance would only save me about $400...and they don't even cover fills. Just try to be proactive, and stay on the boards, it's helped me alot with passing the time! Good luck!!

Definitely. Safer is always better, it's great that your surgeon actually cares enough to postpone. Some of them might just want that payout. My surgery date is December 23rd, so maybe we can be buddies! :thumbup:

Hmm, you might have lost your period for a while due to the weight loss? I know that happened to a friend of mine when she first got banded. Are you on birth control?

That's gotta be tough. At least you'll be able to enjoy Thanksgiving, as little as your pre-op diet lets you. :thumbup: Hope you get better quickly!!

I have a BMI of 43, but even WITH insurance I'd have to pay $9,900 and some change, and I'd have to go on a 6 month diet before being banded to even qualify. Since my insurance doesn't cover fills anyway, I've elected to pay the extra $500 to get a year of fills for free and get it done sooner. They definitely let anyone self-pay (anyone who qualifies for the surgery in the first place anyway), so I'd just go speak to a surgeon in your area. :thumbup: I've heard Mexico is the way to go, though, it's about 1/2 the price as in the U.S., and I'm sure their surgeons are JUST as good or they wouldn't be allowed to perform the surgery, and the surgeons here definitely wouldn't be recommending them. I'd say just research it and present whatever you find to your husband and explain why it's the best option for you. :thumbup: Good luck!
