  1. What are you eating? I am now allowed to eat regular foods and am struggling with getting my Protein in. I would like to hear from NYU bandsters as to what you are eating. Is anyone doing red meat? I have found that I can eat it - I guess because there is no restriction - only tried this once with a small piece and am not anxious to do so again right now anyway. I am not really a Breakfast person. The only breakfast foods I enjoyed prior to surgery were fried eggs, bacon, toast, muffins and Bagels. Eggs any other way I don't like, not a Cereal, oatmeal or cream of wheat person. Any ideas? lunch is usually tuna but there is only so much tuna one can eat.Can you guys please give me some meal ideas? Also becuase I have been gaining weight I have become scared to eat solids. I had all liquids today because I can't stand seeing the scale going in the wrong direction. Any ideas? TIA

  2. i have so many questions for those folks who have been though this.

what'sthe PACU like? Are you laying down or siting up in there? Can i have my regular clothes in there? what did it feel like as you werecoming out of anasthesia?

when do you get the heparim shot and IV? Is it before you go into the OR?

how long before you get a room? how long till you can start sipping liquids?

    Hi Kristen,

The PACU was relatively full with other patients coming out of surgery. No you don't get your regular clothes until you are in your own room. As far as coming out of anesthesia it was like waking up from a long night of sleep. For me it was hard to see clearly at first as everything seemed blurry. As far as heparin shot i have no idea what that is. I could have gotten it and not even know. The IV was given in hte OR. I couldn't honestly tell you how long it took between the PACU and getting my own room. I was kind of out of it. Initially i was given ice chips and then a couple of hours later Propel and a couple of hours after that chicken broth. Let me tell you chicken broth never tasted so good. If you have any fears going in let me tell you the staff is so wonderful they will put you at ease.

  3. hi everyone! I am also glad to see this forum here. I am also going to be having my surgery at NYU. I have allready went to the seminar, had my psych eval, and blood work. My next appt. is with the nutritionist and nurse. I have one big dilemma. I don't know what surgeon to choose. All 3 of them have a great reputation. I live in South Jersey, and i originally decided to go to NYU because i had chosen Dr.Feilding, then i changed my mind to Dr.Ren. I keep going back and forth. I wish i could meet all 3 of them before making a decision.I only had an opportunity to meet Dr.Feilding and that was at the seminar. I have read that some people choose who ever is first available for surgery. If anyone could please share how they decided, and give info about their experience with the surgeon they chose. Thanks a lot!

    Hi Morgan!!!

I am going to be totally biased here and tell you choose Dr. Kurian. To this day I have yet to personally even see Drs. Fielding or Ren. I initially chose Dr. Kurian because I knew my surgery would be scheduled sooner with her than if I chose any of the other two. They all have great reputations for being great surgeons and truly caring for their patients. I can't speak for the surgical styles of the other two but am absolutely in love with the way my incisions are healing. Already my scars are starting to fade and there is no keloid formation (which I tend to get). But of course the choice is yours. If you haven't already you can also check out obesityhelp.com, do a search on each physician's name which will give you some additional info on them as well as testimonies from some of their patients. Good luck!

  4. Hi Travellady, Though this journey can be frustrating I realize how important it is to share all aspects of it especially the negative ones so that people can see that there are ups and downs. I know the ultimate outcome will be a good one but these are things most of us will go through.

I will try to leave the scale alone, i will try to leave the scale alone but....hush...the scale is calling my name

  5. Thanks for your words of advice lady. I have since done a search and found that gaining is not so unusual. I guess I unrealistically expected that the scale would always show a loss. I also finally got a call back from the nutritionist at my surgeon's office who told me I am doing fine and that I just need to be patient.

Enigma, I know, I know I have a ridiculous obsession with that darn scale. It whispers my name everyday and in an entranced state I get on it. I need help. LOL. Exercise? What's that? I am too tired to do anything most days. But I have made a promise to myself to walk at least a half hour five days a week starting today. It's a beautiful day so I will be walking the Brooklyn Bridge after work today. I have been pretty good with not snacking between meals and if I do it's with nuts or fruit. Thanks for your suggestions they are much appreciated.

  6. That's wonderful - Congratulations!

ETA: Okay I actually read through your whole post this time. I initially saw each lost 100 lbs and got overly excited. You give us all hope. However, it is troubling to here about your wife's eating habits. She is setting herself up for failure IMHO. She needs a well balanced diet or she will end up with unnecessary medical problems - not to mention malnourished. I agree with linksmom as well.

  7. I am so glad I didn't miss this thread. Earlier this morning I complained about this in another thread. I am so happy it is not uncommon. In my case I have been gaining weight steadily (about 1 lb/day) since last Wednesday. It's so frustrating. I am thinking one of my problems is I am a carb addict. It seems alomst impossible for me to go a day without bread, rice or Pasta. Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

  8. Hi beautiful ladies,

I am so down right now. Since last Wednesday I have been gaining on average 1 pound/day. My appetite has returned full throttle and I have to force myself not to overdo it but I know I am still eating more than I should. I'm finding it very hard to slow down and am practically inhaling my food. I don't know what to do with myself right now. If anyone has advice please send it my way. I was down to 204 initially and am back to 212. For those of you have had surgery, is this normal? Please don't tell me to call the doctor's office because I have finally learned what others who've used NYU are complaining about. The staff SUCKS - no one has returned my call yet. Did I say THEY SUCKKKK?! Anyway this whining session ends now.

  9. Wow, you really did great after sugery. that's wonderful.

I also questioned staying over night if I'm an outpatient. I called my insurance company to verify that, they said it was correct, that if I stay longer I have two days to call them and get an approval number. Since I live alone I think I'm more comfortable staying over just in case. I'm going grocery shopping tomorow after work aside from Soup and V8 I don't know what else to get. I guess I can start blending fruit in my protien drinks. If anyone has suggestions for me please let me know. I already have chewable Vitamins and gas-x.

As far as eating all I really had in the beginning was Water, propel, broth and diluted slimfast - capuccino is the only one i like - which i diluted by letting a couple of cubes of ice melt in the glass with it. I really wasn't hungy and the 1 or 2 times i felt hunger later on during the first phase i had to force myself to have something because i just had no desire to eat. That has since past and now I am finding myself fighting to control portion and taking my time. Gas x has been a freind of mine but i absolutely hate taking the Vitamins. if anyone has suggestions for a good liquid vit please share.

  10. Glad you are doing so well. What exactly is sliming, I seen it before on other posts, not sure what it is. They told me I will also go in as a out patient but will spend the night. that way they don't need pre approval from my insurance. Not sure what the point is as my insurance company would give the approval. I hope it's ok if i ask you a couple of questions. Did you know you were going to leave at night before your surgery? How many hours after surgery did you leave?

    Thank You

Sliming is productive burping. I had eaten too quickly and probably too much. I kept having the feeling of a gas bubble in my throat. Later on that night as I was driving home from the movies with my husband my mouth started to Water a lot. I told him to pull over because I felt like I was going to throw up. Sure enough I started to heave and a good amount of clear slimy Fluid came up. There was no smell or taste to it.

No, I don't mind questions. We're here to help each other. Looking back I guess even before the date of surgery once I heard outpatient I made up in my own mind I would be leaving the same day (like a few hours after surgery). I never even considered that there would be an overnight stay. I guess I just don't get the concept. How would it be considered outpatient if you stay overnight like everyone else? When I got to the hospital preop area I heard different stories. No one seemed to be sure when I would be going home. The nurse said overnight, the doctor said around six. I ended up leaving after nine. The staff on the floor seemed shocked to see me go but to tell you the truth I just wanted to be home in the comfort of my own bed.

  11. I am glad to see this board finally in action - hope it keeps going. Anyway I was banded on 7/15 by Dr. Kurian. So far my experience has been pretty good. I love love LOVE Dr. Kurian. She's very easy to talk to and made me feel at ease immediately. I guess I have been very fortunate because everything went smoothly for me. After waiting for what seemed to be forever I finally went in for my consultation with Dr. Kurian and made sure that I would be able to see the nutritionist at the same time. Like I stated in another post I got there for 9 and did not leave until after 12 which was annoying but I dealt with it. The last person I saw was Nilsa - who in my opinion was unorganized and flighty - I learned that she was fairly new there so that explains that. Anyway because my insurance is pretty lenient in comparison to a lot of the other ones I've read about i was able to schedule surgery that same day for two weeks later. I was able to do it on an outpatient basis which allowed me to leave the night of surgery. i did not have to stay overnight - YAY! With the exception of gas the first week it has been a pretty good experience. I have already gone in for my first visit and saw Gaspar as Dr. K is/was on vacation who allowed me to start mushies early. I start solids tomorrow - can't wait. I have one episode of sliming so far. I would do it all over again.

  12. LOL, glad to hear you're alright. But I can honestly tell you I wasn't hungry after surgery. More thirsty. I was given ice chips, propel and requested chicken broth just because it smelled so good. I know that gas is something else but it will pass (tee hee).

I am almost two weeks postop and today is the first day I have no gas at all at this point. My only issue is I still get tired very easily. I experienced my first episode of productive burping on Friday night and for me it was such a relief. I had been having a feeling of a gas bubble in my throat for about two days and it was so irritating. I know that I ate too much Soup (and the wrong Soup - it was from a restaurant and after my second sip I realized I had made a big mistake in ordering it - it was loaded with butter but dang it tasted so good). A few hours later out came the slime and relief. The same bubble feeling happened again the next day. I had no idea why it was happening. I hardly ate anything but then realized it had to be gas. Got home gulped down Water (hey I had to take me chances to get rid of this feeling) and that worked. I've felt fine since.

Anyway, maybe you should also try the gas-x strips. In my case sometimes they help and sometimes they don't. Caio.

  13. Yettia, so happy for you. I am thankful all went well. I pray for your smooth recovery.

I second that! Don't you just feel like you can do anything now (after a couple months of course). Like you have all these goals you've been talking about accomplishing and now you can actually really see them being done?
