  1. 23 grams of Protein is just about right. If you take in more than about 20 to 25 grams at a time, it just goes to waste and over time will stress the kidneys. Check with your doctor or nutritionist to verify.

That's completely wrong. I get over 60g of Protein in one of my meals; none of it goes to waste. Your body takes what you give it. Please read http://www.wannabebig.com/diet-and-nutrition/is-there-a-limit-to-how-much-protein-the-body-can-use-in-a-single-meal/.

  2. Too early. One of the biggest problems that causes issues later on down the road is that people do not allow their bodies to heal. You just had a HIGHLY invasive surgery, and now you're looking to run and put stress on your body? Wrong thing to do. Allow yourself time to heal, you'll thank yourself later on. I was told no more than walking for 6 weeks.

  3. Same here comgrats Reverie..i only had my surgery for 5 months and i also have NO fills some days are harder than others.. but i also don't want any fills.. had surgery 1/27/11 lost around 107 lbs to date..the heaviest i got was 314lbs.. i lose some gain some!!!!

    Cliff,

That is awesome!! Congrats a hundred times over. I love seeing people being successful without having/needing a fill. When people talk about restriction its sort of mind-boggling, because I never sought it. I took the band rules, applied them, and have lost flawlessly. Nowadays I really tend to forget about my band, which may or may not be a good thing lol. Opposed to focusing on food so much I just count my calories and move more.

Again, congrats. Your success is definitely amazing!

  4. First of all, super congrats on your weight loss! But how did you do it without one fill? Did they fill it a little during the initial surgery?

Not sure lol. It was just mind over matter for me. No I have a completely empty band. I read a lot about complications that occur later on when you keep getting fills and unfills. I just wasn't interested in having to deal with that. The band does give me the little hint of restriction I needed, otherwise I think I did most of the work.

  5. Thanks, again. I had a good appointment yesterday at the doctor's office, she told me to continue workout, but cut back on the weight lift activies and add more cardio, that will be hard to do since I am disabled. Hello, Pool exercises. The doctor told me to eat more for Protein for Breakfast (Protein Shake) and 2 meals after that, no snacking!

I can't wait to my August doctor's visit; Again, thanks.

I'm no doctor but cutting back on weight-lifting is silly. Weight-lifting is EXTREMELY beneficial when it comes to weight loss as it helps to ensure that the weight you're losing isn't muscle mass, but fat. And in the case I've a disabled person, it's even better. I've seen much better results from the last few weeks when I've been seriously weight-lifting when compared to the times I was running for an hour on the treadmill.

    I'd reconsider. My 2 cents.

  6. My band has no Fluid in it at all.

I expected I would need fills and never intended to do it without getting a fill. After 80 pounds lost, I would have thought it would be loose enough to need one by now. I have changed my habits though and so I can't tell if it's me or the band doing the work. I could eat anything but have eaten properly every day since surgery. The band doesn't make me do that nor does it make me go the the gym every day. I'm totally conflicted about what to do when I get to goal... I've got time to figure it out though - 42 more pounds to go.

I wouldn't get it taken out unless it's causing problems. For me mine just reminds me to chew, otherwise I eat what I want when I want and however much I want. I never had "restriction" per say, I just got it into my head that I HAD to eat smaller meals. And yes, there were times I was hungry, but what most people don't seem to get is that being hungry is a normal signal. What isn't normal is not being able to differentiate between head and real hunger as well as being able to say no when it is merely head hunger.

Alas, eating smaller meals of 300 calories 6 times a day killed my metabolism and made me start to fear food. I felt "guilty" when I ate certain foods or I saw certain foods as "dirty." Which now I realize isn't true. I've told plenty of people that I had WLS and many have said wow you don't eat like it. And..I don't. What person who has lost 115lbs eats Cookies and ice cream, daily? Not the "healthy" kind either.

To the lady who posted that "skinny people eat treats," that's the problem. We all think skinny people "treat" themselves to certain foods, when in fact that's untrue. Skinny people generally eat what they want, and can do so, because they are more active. They are aware of what they're taking in and what they're doing to help burn said calories. Never have I come across a skinny person saying oh I'm gonna treat myself for today; never. Why? Because food is food. A calorie from an apple is the same calorie from a pack of m&ms. The fact that some foods are seen as taboo is a huge problem and that, in my opinion, is what causes people to binge.

I do love my band and I don't regret getting it, but I can say for sure that it has not helped much. Just as CheckYes said, I made the choice to eat smaller meals; I made the choice to hop on an amazing exercise routine and to stick with it for a year+ now. The band didn't do any of that, and that's what prompted my success.

  7. I wasn't saying that you specifically were only relying on your band. I know how hard this process is - even with good restriction. I did not mean for it to come across sounding like I think the band is a sure thing or a fix-all. I know it's not and applaud your success. For me, eating healthy every day and exercising has become a way of life. I got the band because I hadn't been able to do it on my own - then at around the same time the work I was doing in therapy suddenly clicked and I have a band but have never had or needed a fill. So, do I know I could have done it then on my own? No. But I suspect I will know I don't need a band when I do reach goal because all this time it has been my energy and effort and very little, if any, to do with my band. I worry about erosion and slip when I lose all this weight and fat around my stomach and I don't want my port sticking out so yeah, I might have it removed later.

My port sticks out :( And it's a low profile port. I hate it. I'm thinking I can't get it removed but I'm looking at having a TT and if that thing has to stay there I'm gonna have a fit!

  8. There is a definite difference between thinking you can do it without the band and knowing that you can do it without the band.

After a long period of time many of us become complacent and think the band does nothing - we do not realise how well it really is helping to control our hunger. To have the band out thinking it was doing nothing only to find out it was in fact doing a great deal would be a very sad outcome.

One very successful bandster on this board is Jachut. I seem to recall reading that she thought her band was not doing a lot and that she had everything under control. She has had to have all the Fluid removed from her band for a number of surgeries and other medical treatment and now posts that the band was in fact making a huge difference. I suggest that those who are contemplating having their bands removed as they feel they no longer need them look up some of her posts and read them - they are very interesting.

Will do! I have seen some of her past posts but nothing recently.

But, for me, having no fill at all, not even a primer fill, I can't contribute much of my success to the band. Yes it has helped with hunger but since I have started fasting, my ghrelin levels are pretty much under control. I can say I am NOT hungry until about 11:00AM each day. Pre-band I had no motivation and for some reason being banded gave me the push I needed. I work my butt off each day exercising, and I love it. I count my calories.

Since I doubt that my band will last forever, I have always kept that in the back of my mind and I have made the needed changes. I eat what I want when I want, and the key has been to move more; simple. Pre-band I didn't want to move. Moving sucked, I was lazy. If people on this board looked at what I eat and how much of it, you'd never know I was banded at all, which is why I have considered having it taken out especially reading a lot of the complications that seem to come about at year 2 and 3. However, if having it taken out will cost me a lot, I'd definitely keep it in until a problem arises, though if it came to taking it out due to complications, I wouldn't hesitate to rid of it.

  9. Are you tracking your calories? If not you need to start. You may be eating too little or too much. Without knowing your exact calories it's hard to determine why you aren't losing. From what info you've given it seems like you're extremely lacking in Protein as well as dietary fats. A diet lacking both isn't healthy, especially for someone your age.

As for your eating schedule, it does not matter and does not have any influence on your weight-loss. I eat 3 large meals a day after fasting for 14 hours; The point is to eat when you're hungry or when it's ideal for your schedule.

  10. I don't think the original poster was being arrogant. I understand what she was saying and my take on the intent of the post is way different than yours.

I think what the original poster was saying is that we can retrain ourselves when it comes to our eating habits and exercise routine. I have done that and work hard at it everyday. It can be done. If you chose not to, that's your choice but I personally feel that eating healthy and exercising daily will really help change how I feel about myself. I'd rather take that route than rely on my band to have a lot of control over how I feel. It's a personal choice for sure and either is fine.

I just don't see arrogance in the original poster's comments.

Agreed! I've made so many changes and new committments that I definitely think I could do this without my band; I have all along in essence! My surgeon joked and said he banded my brain, and I said yeah maybe LOL. Most people don't realize that the band isn't meant to last forever; rarely does it. Long-term studies show that most people do not keep their bands forever. Thankfully I can and have been successful without relying on it much at all.

  11. I keep wondering if I might have mine out once I reach goal and maintain for a while. I have never had a fill be needed one so I am not sure what help it's giving me or not giving. I guess I will cross that bridge when I get there.

If I were to have mine out I think it would be so it didn't cause any problems in the future. If it's not doing anything to help keep you at your goal, I say take it out.

I have been having the same thoughts!! If anything it's only helping me get stuck, lol. The full sensation is nice but I think I've really grasped the nutrition and exercise that is right for me.

  12. I agree with the other posters. Don't stop exercising. You may need to eat more. I noticed less weight loss in the last week since I've reached my 6 week post op and started exercising more vigorously. I am not going to stop exercising because I know it will ultimately be for my benefit. Some people on this site have suggested that your body retains Water when you exercise a lot. Good luck and congratulations on the 15 lbs. I doubt you would have lost 15 lbs in one week if you hadn't been exercising previously.

She didn't lose 15lbs of fat; if anything she dropped a lot of Water weight that she was carrying from exercising.

I think everyone needs to remember that the scale measures weight loss, not fat loss. Weight loss includes fat, muscle, water, waste, and so on. Exercise encourages and usually results in fat loss, the main idea behind getting healthier. Anyone can undereat and lose muscle mass/water weight and see a huge drop on the scale. Losing fat is the main goal, or should be.
