    Foods question...

I apologize if this has been answered, I just didn't find it on here but my questions are: Why is bread now a no-no after the band? What are some other now no-nos? Is there a ligitimate reason for the no-nos since the band is only restrictive, how do the certain foods cause bad reactions now if only the opening is smaller is it because they are too 'heavy' or 'thick' to pass thru? Is this also why I've seen some say that they hafta eat first then drink? I'm sorry if this is silly or repeating other posts I didn't know about, I was just curious. If I ask my dr then I'd be thinking that he'd tell me about no-nos just to make me eat better foods & not due to any possible reactions (paranoid, silly, I know but that's just my thoughts:rolleyes: ) Thanx!:phanvan

    Foods question...

Try crushing them then putting them in applesauce or flavored applesauce, or eating w/jello or pudding. Applesauce may be best or take w/juice or something w/flavor. Hope this helps.
  3. I recently became inflicted with Hypothyroidism back in 2003, I went from 155 to 229 in just 4 to 6 months. I was devestated! I'm 5'8" so 155 was pretty good weight for me, wasn't perfect but was do-able now I don't know WHAT to do. I went on the LA Weight Loss program & got down to 210, I'm fluctuating between 199 & 201 now. A relative had developed the same disorder not too long after I did but went on the Medifast diet & lost 25 lbs which is what she wanted to lose. I don't have the money for Medifast although I know it probably would work so I'm looking into the LapBand procedure. I'm not a big eater, rarely do I eat sweets or fattening foods, I actually eat pretty good & normal, the only hang-up is that I had a severe knee injury that renders me unable to do certain exercises like I used to do. I can do certain things but can't sit, walk or stand for more than a few minutes at a time. Having read my plight, do y'all think that the LapBand would work for me having Hypothyroidism but having an injury that keeps me from most exercises? And as far as the pre-op questionaire regarding the diets I've been on, do you think I'll be turned away not having tried ALL the ones listed? I've tried lots of diets but they didn't really work execept the LA Weight Loss but it costs money too & I'm laid off currently. My husband's insurance covers me & covers weight loss surgery so that's a plus. Also, I've asked this on another thread but I'll ask here...does the lapband port show thru your skin once you've lost the weight? does it interfere with exercising like doing crunches or the like or interfere with just bending over in general? :guess What about sleeping on my side? I realize it'd be difficult just after surgery so this is more for AFTER the soreness goes away & after the healing process. I'd appreciate any input. Thanx!
  4. Thanks for your story. It's great to know I'm not alone. :straight So has the band worked for you?

  6. For letting me know about the pool. It was really nice of you to find that info & post it here for me & whoever else may've needed it. Thanx again! I greatly appreciate it. --SK.:kiss
  7. Your words helped a lot. A problem I'm wrestling with also is that a relative, ony about four yrs younger than me, developed hypothyroidism after I did but went on Medifast & lost most of the weight so I was, in my mind, thinking why isn't that diet also working for me. I lost only four pounds in a month so your story makes me feel like I, too, need to go forward with the procedure. Afterall, it's only limiting my food intake which is good about the band. I just wanted to thank you for your story & let you know that it did help. --SK. :kiss

    pre-op liquid diet

For letting me know about the Medifast.
  9. So, is this sipping a permanent thing or way later on, can I guzzle regular amounts like I can normally now?
  10. W84ME, I liked what you said about the secret being mine as long as I keep it to myself, that makes me feel good if I go fwd w/the procedure. I was feeling doubtful coz I didn't want to have to deal w/all the questions from people, they can be SOOOO annoying! But like you say, if I keep it to myself, who'll know except my hubby who'll of course have to know. Thanx for that statement, it took doubt away for the first time!

Tell me about "living the Dave Ramsey way"

Nor did I want one but they do come in handy since I travel a lot & have to rent a car. I know now some rental car places take debit cards but they also usually charge an enormous security deposit fee for using it. There's been times I just didn't have the cash for gas as well & so I can use my card for emergencies. My policy has always been if I don't have the cash, I don't need the item or service but that's been changed somwhat since I do travel now, for one reason & also having to recently get my car fixed cost a few hundred dollars that we just didn't have the extra cash for, we can use the card if necessary, it just comes in handy for me for special purposes like that. I do try to be careful now though coz I got into some debt a few yrs ago when I lost my job so I try to stay below my means now.:paranoid :straight
  14. To everyone who's responded so far. The reason I'm still debating is because I feel like I should be able to lose weight w/o having surgery. I'm sure all of y'all or at least most of y'all have felt this way (just assuming of course) & have tried other methods w/o results. I'm still feeling a wee bit hopeful. I'm also just afraid other people will think badly of me, like I took the easy way out or that "oh THAT'S how she lost weight, I thought she did it on her own.." blah blah. I really feel like I'll be judged when people find out because they may think I took the easy way out & it's NOT easy. It's HARD either dieting or with the surgery because it's a total lifestyle change either way but harder due to being completely restricted. The upside that makes me wanna go ahead w/the surgery is because I WOULD be restricted & not have to worry any further about how I eat. I feel that the long term benefits outweigh the negatives but I want to at least try the medifast as my last try before doing the lapband, just in case it DOES work for me. I don't want to be left wondering, well, if I had tried it, would it have worked. :paranoid BUT it does require SOME exercise either way. As for those who asked if I could try water exercises, well there's no local access to a pool that I know of around here. If anyone knows of a place that's affordable & nearby Katy, TX, (West of Hwy. 99 ONLY please) just post about it here, if you wouldn't mind. Thanx!:straight
  15. Your input was very helpful & greatly appreciated. I'm still having trouble deciding.:phanvan
  16. Thanx to all that replied. Everything I've researched about Hypothyroid states weight gain even my GP says it related & have no other explaination for the weight gain since I've never been an overweight child plus I was still at a healthy weight before this happened. I've heard good things about Armour. I forgot to ask my GP about it today so I'll ask about it next time. Usually HYPERthyroidism patients are thin so I dunno if the HYPOS just got good drs & good drugs for it as for being not fat or perhaps they got lucky & caught it in time before gaining a lot of weight. TexasTerry, I/we live just west of Houston.

    General Questions about Erosion, etc.

So what's the band made of to erode, plastic? How long would it be til it erodes & is that a normal thing for it to erode? Thanx.

    Hello Texas Group

So, may I ask, how did going out of state help you? Was it cheaper? Also, may I ask a silly question, one thing bugging me, can you physically SEE the port under your skin or will you once you've lost all the weight? That wud be gross to me, also, where the port is situated, will that inhibit my exercising like doing crunches or certain Pilates moves or even bending over to tie my shoes or pick something up? How about sleeping, will that get in the way of sleeping on my side? I realize I can ask my doctor this but would like you or anyone having experienced this to answer, from a patient's point of view. I hope you don't mind me asking.:nervous
