Being retired, we eat out a lot. I just say I have a swallowing problem. My biggest problem is foods that are hard to chew and break down in your mouth like limp bacon. When we go out for breakfast, I have to specify CRISP bacon... and sometimes I actually get it. If I don't I send it back. I tell the waitress I have a swallowing problem.
Sometimes waitresses think there must have been something wrong with the food, but usually, if I eat slow I can eat half of whatever and they don't seem to question that.

Wow. i am going to make sure if I ever start wavering from the band plan I save this to re read.

This underscores what I plan to say to people/waitstaff when I'm banded (next month). "I've had WLS and can't eat a lot, but this is delicious and I'm really enjoying it."
I know a sleever who always says this when ordering in a restaurant. She only gets a starter, and explains that she's a sleever and only needs a small bit to really savor the meal.
